Tom Curran hat-trick sends Glamorgan tumbling to 44 all out

Glamorgan made their lowest T20 score as Tom Curran, Imran Tahir and Gareth Batty ran through them

ECB Reporters Network25-Jul-2019Surrey 141 (Jacks 40, Salter 4-23, de Lange 4-26) beat Glamorgan 44 (Curran 3-3, Batty 3-7, Tahir 3-8)Surrey’s second near-25,000 sell-out crowd in three days at the Kia Oval roared their approval as Tom Curran took a spectacular hat-trick in his opening new-ball over to set up a dramatic 97-run victory against Glamorgan, who subsequently crashed to 44 all out in 12.5 overs – their lowest total in T20 cricket.South Africa legspinner Imran Tahir then completed a triple-wicket over himself, removing Graham Wagg, Andrew Salter and Marchant de Lange in the space of five balls in an almost-as-remarkable 12th over, to send Glamorgan hurtling from 40 for 6 to 40 for 9.Offspinner Gareth Batty quickly completed the rout, bowling last man Michael Hogan in the next over to finish with figures of 3 for 7. Tahir’s figures were 3 for 8 and Curran’s 3 for 3 in two overs. It was Surrey’s first Vitality Blast win of the season, in their third south group game, while Glamorgan remained winless after three matches.Curran’s memorable hat-trick came when he first bowled David Lloyd for 4 with a beauty and then, with the fourth ball of the second over of Glamorgan’s innings, had Colin Ingram held by Rikki Clarke at slip as he tried to force into the off side. Remarkably, new batsman Billy Root also edged to Clarke next ball in an almost carbon copy of Ingram’s dismissal – leaving Curran to sprint away in celebration towards the Peter May Stand, followed by his jubilant team-mates.When Surrey captain Jade Dernbach then had Owen Morgan caught at the wicket for 2, in his second over with the new ball, Glamorgan were a sickly 9 for 4. And it got worse for the Welsh county when, in the eighth over, Pakistan left-hander Fakhar Zaman lofted Batty to long-on after making just 17 on his Glamorgan debut. From 33 for 5, Glamorgan’s chances were slim, but it was still shocking when Chris Cooke then holed out at 39 for 6 and they fell away so rapidly against the spin of Tahir and Batty to what was a humiliating defeat.Offspinner Salter had earlier taken a career-best 4 for 23 as Surrey were bowled out for 141, with Glamorgan putting in a fine performance in the field with some excellent catching and ground fielding.Fast bowler de Lange also impressed, taking the last three Surrey wickets in five balls in the final over to finish with 4 for 26. De Lange bowled Dernbach for 2, removed Batty next ball when the veteran former Surrey captain hit his own wicket as he tried to make room to cut and, from the final ball of the innings, had Tahir caught at mid-off.It was Salter’s four-wicket burst in mid-innings, however, which derailed Surrey’s effort after Will Jacks and Aaron Finch had added 61 in 6.4 overs for the second wicket after de Lange had dismissed opener Mark Stoneman in the second over, caught for 5 at third man from a slashed square cut that he could not keep down. From 73 for 1 they slumped to 99 for 6 after Jacks’ sparkling 26-ball 40, which featured two sixes and four fours, had ended with a tickle to keeper Cooke from a leg-side ball from Wagg that would have been a wide had the batsman not touched it.Salter then struck with his first delivery, at the start of the 10th over, to have Finch brilliantly caught on the leg-side boundary by Root for 28 from 20 balls. From the last ball of that over, he forced Clarke to chip a tame return catch and, in his next over, Curran also fell for 1 when he was superbly held by a diving Lloyd at extra cover.Ollie Pope went for 12, miscuing a reverse flick at Salter to short third man, and Surrey’s seventh wicket pair of Jordan Clark and Liam Plunkett tried hard to put some sort of total on the board – dealing mainly in ones and well-run twos in a stand of 38 in five overs.Plunkett did, though, hit Salter’s final ball for six over long-off in his 18, which ended in the 19th over when he lofted Wagg’s left-arm medium pace to long-on. Wagg took 2 for 28 and Clark ended unbeaten on 26, from 27 balls. The match had begun 40 minutes late at 7.10pm, initially because of a threat of lightning in steamy temperatures, which remained in the low 30s centigrade despite an early evening build-up of cloud that then, five minutes before play was originally due to start at 6.55pm, produced a short but torrential downpour which sent many people in the capacity crowd – Surrey have attracted full houses for both this week’s T20 home games against Middlesex and Glamorgan – scurrying for cover.Play was also held up for a few minutes towards the latter part of Surrey’s innings when a fox ran on to the outfield, and would not move. It also made a deposit on to the Oval turf, which itself had to be removed with a shovel after the animal had been driven away by stewards.

Final went to extra time after goalless 90 minutesEl Kaabi scored late winner to seal Olympiacos winFirst-ever European success for a Greek teamTELL ME MORE

The Morocco star popped up late on with the winning goal as Olympiacos ran out 1-0 winners after extra time against Fiorentina. To add some extra spice to the victory, they claimed their first-ever European trophy at the home of domestic rivals AEK Athens.

It seemed clear from the first half that it would be a low-scoring affair as both teams dropped their intensity after a lively start that saw them exchange attacks. Fiorentina soon took over as the more threatening team and had a goal ruled out for offside just nine minutes in, but their attempts on goal were fairly weak from then on.

Ex-Fiorentina star Stevan Jovetic created a chance to break the deadlock and his former team's hearts with a shot from the edge of the box for Olympiacos in extra time but a strong save kept it out. Jonathan Ikone will feel his shot towards the Greek side's goal should have been the decider in the second half of extra time, but he was comfortably denied and then catastrophe struck for his team.

After 116 minutes, El Kaabi sealed the Greek giants' first continental trophy when he got onto the end of a cross and headed beyond Pietro Terracciano. The competition's top scorer, it was his 11th goal and easily the most valuable.

A painfully long wait followed as the goal was reviewed by VAR but it was given the all clear and Olympiacos went wild as they sealed the title.

You have to hand it to El Kaabi. He had a frustrating evening and was a spectator for large spells of the first 115 minutes. But when the ball came flying into the Fiorentina box, he threw himself at it and managed to divert it into the net to make Olympiacos history.

GettyTHE BIG LOSER

He hasn't had the most fruitful of seasons since joining Fiorentina from Roma in the January transfer window, but Vincenzo Italiano would have expected much more from Andrea Belotti. The striker barely threatened throughout the game and was taken off just before the hour mark to end a flat performance from the Italy international.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Olympiacos will celebrate their continental success well into the night and will compete in the Europa League next season thanks to the victory on home soil in Greece on Wednesday.

Chris Dent, Gareth Roderick guide Gloucestershire between showers

Senior batsmen see Gloucestershire to 146 for 3 as Sussex fail to make significant headway on wet day

ECB Reporters Network13-Jun-2019Gloucestershire pair Chris Dent and Gareth Roderick both made half-centuries between the showers but their Specsavers County Championship match against Sussex is heading towards a draw.Only 49 overs in two sessions were possible on the third day at Arundel Castle, with Gloucestershire reaching 146 for 3 in reply to Sussex’s 351 for 8. With just a day left a stalemate looks certain, which would at least keep Sussex in the top three promotion places in Division Two.Umpires Ian Blackwell and Neil Bainton took the players off again at 5pm because of light drizzle and play was abandoned at 5.40pm. So far, 123 overs have been lost to rain during the match.Dent made 851 runs and was Gloucestershire’s leading run scorer in the Championship last season but his 59 on a slow pitch was only his second half-century of the season. After the early loss of Miles Hammond, Dent shared stands of 60 with James Bracey and Roderick, who was unbeaten on 51 when the rain returned an hour after play had resumed at 4pm following a three-hour delay.Dent will have been disappointed with his dismissal. On a slow pitch he had survived one escape when he was dropped at third slip by Luke Wells off Ollie Robinson. He had moved onto 59 when he chased a ball from Chris Jordan down the leg side and Sussex wicketkeeper Ben Brown dived to his right to pull off a good catch. Dent faced 141 balls and hit eight fours.Roderick did the bulk of the scoring in the hour after the resumption and his 88-ball half-century included six boundaries.Earlier, Sussex had declared on their overnight score of 351 for 8 after rain had wiped out two sessions on the second day. Robinson was a handful with the new ball and was rewarded in his second over when he moved one away from Hammond who edged to third slip where Danny Briggs took a good catch.Robinson’s progress was being monitored by England scout Geoff Arnold, with a view to a possible call-up for England Lions’ match against Australia A next month. He would have been celebrating again in his second spell had Wells held on when Dent was on 46. Instead, David Wiese took the second wicket when Bracey, who had played well for his 21, chased a wide delivery and slapped it into Briggs’s hands at point.

Talks with Tuchel break downHunt for new Bayern boss restartsDe Zerbi linked againWHAT HAPPENED?

According to HITC, De Zerbi is back in contention for the Bayern role after talks broke down between Thomas Tuchel and the club regarding him remaining in charge.

Bayern had previously looked into appointing De Zerbi, Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann to the role after it was originally announced Tuchel would be leaving back in February.

However, after missing out on both Nagelsmann and Alonso after they committed their futures to Germany and Bayer Leverkusen respectively, the possibility of Tuchel signing a new deal was discussed.

The Italian is now being considered for the role once again, with interest reportedly mutual from his side. Bayern have informed his representatives that they would be willing to pay his release clause if the German side pushes ahead with their interest.

De Zerbi spoke about his future last month and insisted he was committed to the Seagulls, saying: “I feel good in England, in the Premier League and I have no intention of leaving.

"There is no team that can change my mind, I have made a commitment. I like being outside and experiencing the atmosphere of the stadium. Furthermore, in England, I have the opportunity to improve my knowledge of the language and football.”

WHAT TUCHEL SAID

“This is my last press conference as FC Bayern manager, there were talks, but we didn’t reach an agreement so the decision from February still stands,” Tuchel explained in a recent press conference.

PCB grants all-rounder time off to deal with ‘personal issues’

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Apr-2019Senior Pakistan allrounder Shoaib Malik has been given ten days’ leave from his team’s pre-World Cup trip of England to deal with “personal issues”.Malik will miss Sunday’s T20I and the first ODI against England on May 8. He is expected to rejoin the side before the second ODI on May 11. The PCB will not be making any further comments and fully expects all concerned to respect Shoaib’s privacy.”Malik’s selection for the World Cup raised eyebrows, given that he averages 13.6 with the bat in 23 innings in England. Kane picked up a back injuryPremature exit criticised by HamannBayern will go trophyless this seasonWHAT HAPPENED?

England captain Kane assisted Alphonso Davies' opener at the Bernabeu and then departed the field of play in the 84th minute with the score 1-0 in the German side's favour. The 30-year-old picked up a back injury which has seen him ruled out of Sunday's match against Wolfsburg – and he then had to watch Joselu bag a dramatic late brace as Thomas Tuchel's side were dumped out of the Champions League.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane has been Bayern's go-to man throughout the season, scoring 44 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions. He netted from the penalty spot in the semi-final first leg against Real, seeing him finish with a tally of eight strikes from 12 appearances in the Champions League this term. But his key contributions failed to prevent former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann dishing out some harsh criticism.

WHAT HAMANN SAID

Hamann told : "If you bring in a player, the English national team captain who cost 100 million euros. He may not be Bayern's captain, but he is the most important player, the leading figure. Then I can’t go out after 80 minutes in a Champions League semi with back problems."

He added: "Those are the games where they need him. Of course it was a sign for the Madrid and catastrophic for Bayern."

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR KANE?

After suffering Champions League elimination, the free-scoring Kane will not get the chance to lift silverware for the very first time this season. Euro 2024 is the next chance for him to try and break his duck, with England one of the heavy favourites to win the trophy in Germany.

PSG knocked out of UCL by DortmundAl-Khelaifi backs Enrique despite eliminationBelieves his team were better but unluckyWHAT HAPPENED?

The Parisians endured a bitter Champions League exit as Borussia Dortmund clinched a 2-0 aggregate victory in the semi-final to seal their ticket to Wembley. And after the defeat speculation surrounding Enrique's future started to swirl, which were quickly quelled by the PSG supremo.

When asked if Enrique would continue as the manager for next season, Al-Khelaifi snapped back: "What is this question honestly? Honestly, do you know and understand some football? We are building a long-term project with the youngest squad in Europe, the future will be bright. We will keep going.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite registering 44 attempts over both legs, PSG's endeavours were thwarted by a resolute Dortmund defence, with six shots striking the woodwork. Al-Khelaifi acknowledged Dortmund's resilience but maintained that PSG deserved better fortune as he believes that his troops were the more dominant side over the 180 minutes.

While speaking to Al-Khelaifi said: "We are very disappointed and sad about the result. I think we deserved better. In total, we hit the post on four occasions tonight and twice last week – the ball didn’t want to go in. It’s difficult.

“We wanted to win but congratulations to Dortmund. We really thought we could get to the final. We were the better team. I am proud of our team, the youngest in Europe. It’s the third time in five years that we’ve made the semi-finals. Of course, this wasn’t our objective, but it’s football – sometimes it isn’t fair.”

As Dortmund prepare for the final showdown in London on June 1, PSG face a period of reflection and regrouping. The club's aspirations for Champions League glory remain intact, with Al-Khelaifi and the PSG hierarchy committed to building a formidable team capable of conquering Europe with Enrique at the helm. They will return to action against Toulouse on Sunday evening in a Ligue 1 fixture.

Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk, a mighty test for misfiring Rajasthan Royals

Royals could have won both the matches they have lost, and now come up against the well-oiled Super Kings machine in their backyard

The Preview by Saurabh Somani30-Mar-2019Big PictureIt must be tough being Rajasthan Royals right now. Two defeats in two matches in IPL 2019 so far, when they could have won both with better luck and cool-headed execution. If the batting crumbled against Kings XI Punjab with the total within reach, the bowling fumbled against Sunrisers Hyderabad with 198 to defend. These losses will sting more because Royals need to stack up wins in the first half of the IPL more than others, as they’ll be losing most of their star overseas contingent in the second half. They need a turnaround fast because three losses in a row could become crippling, but they face possibly the toughest match to do that: Chennai Super Kings in Chennai. Expertly marshalled by MS Dhoni, Super Kings haven’t even felt the need to play their full quota of overseas players in their two matches so far. They have now lost David Willey too, after Lungi Ngidi went out with an injury earlier, but seem to be going along fine. They will be reinforced by Scott Kuggeleijn next week, but in the meantime, they have the option of including Mitchell Santner, whose left-arm spin and organised batting could be very useful on a spin-friendly surface – though why change a winning combination?Rajasthan might consider bringing in someone like Mahipal Lomror, who offers a left-arm spin option, in place of Rahul Tripathi, given the conditions. Alternately, they could drop one of Jaydev Unadkat or Dhawal Kulkarni, and bring in a leggie, one of S Midhun or Riyan Parag. The pitch is going to be in focus for this game, given what transpired in the opening match, with both Dhoni and Virat Kohli not quite happy with the track that didn’t let balls come on to the bat. There will be a different surface used, but Chennai has traditionally been friendly to spin anyway. The groundstaff tried to mitigate against that, with a tent-like structure covering the pitch from Wednesday to Friday so that it’s not baked too much by the harsh sun.Sanju Samson hit the first century of IPL 2019•BCCILikely XIsChennai Super Kings: 1 Shane Watson, 2 Ambati Rayudu, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 5 Kedar Jadhav, 6 Dwayne Bravo, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Deepak Chahar, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Harbhajan Singh, 11 Imran TahirRajasthan Royals: 1 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Sanju Samson, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Rahul Tripathi/Mahipal Lomror, 7 K Gowtham, 8 Jofra Archer, 9 Shreyas Gopal, 10 S Midhun, 11 Dhawal KulkarniStrategy punt Kane Williamson deployed Rashid Khan early to get Jos Buttler, and Dhoni might well want to consider doing the same with Imran Tahir. Buttler’s stats against pace are more spectacular than that against spin, and against a quality leggie early on, he might be at his most vulnerable. Ajinkya Rahane has so far used Jofra Archer as first-change, but he might want to consider hustling Super Kings’ top order with Archer’s 145 kph-plus thunderbolts. In their match against Delhi Capitals, Kagiso Rabada’s searing pace had the Super Kings batsmen in a bit of a tangle. Moreover, none of the expected starting XI of Chennai have faced too much of Archer. Shane Watson has played 20 balls from him, the most among the batsmen, getting 27 runs and getting out once. The Super Kings spin attack is already potent, and Royals might want to consider the merits of that strategy. Virtually every frontline batsman in both sides have lower strike rates against spin than pace in IPL matches since 2015. Add in the expected nature of the pitch, and Royals could well drop a pacer for a spinner.Stats that matter Royals have won only one match at Super Kings’ home ground – and that was back in the inaugural IPL season in 2008, when they won the trophy. Since then, Super Kings have triumphed five consecutive times over Royals at home. Royals have the worst away record since IPL 2018, having won only two of nine games. Chepauk has been the most spin-friendly of all IPL venues since 2015, with spinners having the best average (22.8) and economy rate (6.6) among all grounds here. This will be Suresh Raina’s 150th match for Super Kings. It will also be the 50th IPL match at Chepauk. Sanju Samson needs 1 run to complete 2000 runs in IPL. He’s also among the best ‘starters’ in an IPL season: since 2015, considering only the first five games of the season, Samson has 534 runs – more than anyone else.
