Opener Sophie Devine struck 41 off 29 balls and followed it with the wicket of Ayesha Zafar to underpin New Zealand women’s 15-run victory in the first T20I in Sharjah. After Devine and wicketkeeper-batsman Katey Martin (46) took New Zealand women to 147, the slower bowlers strangled Pakistan’s chase.Pakistan had had a strong start to their chase with Zafar and Nahida Khan adding 44 for the opening partnership. Both batsmen fell in successive overs but captain Bismah Maroof and Javeria Khan repaired the chase by putting on 47 for the third wicket in 45 balls. When seamer Lea Tahuhu had Maroof caught behind, Pakistan needed 54 from their last five overs.Thamsyn Newton, who claimed 2 for 22, and the spinners then tightened the noose around the batsmen to limit Pakistan to 132 for 7.Earlier, New Zealand lost their captain Suzie Bates for a duck in the first over, but Devine and Katie Perkins steadied the side with a 68-run stand for the second wicket. They stumbled when both batsmen fell in quick succession, but Martin hit four fours and a six to haul the score near 150. This, despite New Zealand losing five wickets in their last five overs. Left-arm spinner Sadia Yousuf was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan, ending with 3 for 30.

Du Plessis to lead South Africa in all formats

Du Plessis, captain of South Africa’s Test and T20 teams, was also named as AB de Villiers’ successor in ODIs

Firdose Moonda11-Sep-20171:34

Du Plessis, South Africa’s new all-format captain

Faf du Plessis will captain South Africa in all formats after being confirmed as AB de Villiers’ successor in ODIs. Du Plessis has been in charge of the T20 team since February 2013 and the Test squad since August last year. Du Plessis is likely to take the ODI team to the 2019 World Cup.Du Plessis’ first assignment as South Africa’s captain in all formats will be a home series against Bangladesh later this month, which consists of two Tests, three ODIs and three T20s. He is also the marquee player for the Stellenbosch franchise in the T20 Global League which will run from November 3 to December 16. He will then lead South Africa against India, who are due to visit for a full tour including four Tests, and four Tests against Australia. Du Plessis will not have an away series until at least July 2018, when South Africa are scheduled to tour Sri Lanka.Du Plessis’ heavy workload may be lightened with the assurance that he will have de Villiers back in the Test team. De Villiers confirmed his availability for South Africa across all three formats after a lengthy period of uncertainty over his commitment. De Villiers has not played Test cricket for South Africa since January last year and former players including former captain Graeme Smith confirmed de Villiers was contemplating Test retirement before being convinced to play on.De Villiers has missed series’ against New Zealand (home and away), Australia (away), Sri Lanka (home) and England (away). Although South Africa performed well initially, winning all eight trophies on offer in the 2016-17 summer, they returned from a long tour of England without a series win, but with a myriad problems in their Test batting line-up. De Villiers’ return should help sort out that problem.Faf du Plessis will also have AB de Villiers’ presence in all formats•Associated Press

Du Plessis has long been lauded as the best leader of his peers, and the players in both the T20 and Test squads have bought into his philosophy. “He has established himself as one of the best leaders in world cricket and this was reflected in his appointment as the captain for the World XI currently engaged in the T20 Series against Pakistan,” Haroon Lorgat, CSA CEO said. All that remains is for du Plessis to establish a rapport with the new coach Ottis Gibson, who will arrive in the country in a week’s time. Gibson takes over from Russell Domingo, and will remain in charge until the 2019 World Cup. Du Plessis has not worked with Gibson before, but at the end of the England series, said he had spoken to some members of the England team to get some insight into his coaching style.South Africa have not had one captain across formats since 2010, when Smith, who had led in all formats since 2003, gave up the T20 captaincy. Then, Johan Botha took over for a brief period before de Villiers was made limited-overs captain in 2011. De Villiers handed over the T20 reins to du Plessis two years later. He had hoped to succeed Smith as Test captain but lost out to Hashim Amla.De Villiers eventually led South Africa in Tests when Amla stepped down in January 2016. De Villiers only captained in a temporary role before injury saw du Plessis take charge of the Test team. Du Plessis had captained in ODIs before, nine times between 2013 and 2016, when de Villiers was either injured or unavailable.

Somerset's Byrom signs with Zimbabwe domestic side

The 20-year-old Zimbabwe-born batsman signs a winter deal with Rising Stars; move raises interest in whether he will make himself available for the national side

Eddie Byrom, a 20-year-old opening batsman who recently broke into the Somerset first team, has signed a winter deal with Zimbabwe’s new domestic side, Rising Stars. Byrom, who was born in Harare and attended St John’s College, one of the top schools in the area, is on a two-year deal with Somerset but is yet to decide his national allegiance.”I spoke with Somerset about some options during the English winter to further develop my game. Overall I’m just really looking forward to experiencing first-class cricket in Zimbabwe and the different challenges it will pose compared to England,” Byrom said. With big names Brendan Taylor and Kyle Jarvis back in Zimbabwe, attention has turned to some of the country’s other expats scattered across the county scene, and it was Tatenda Taibu who contacted Byrom about the possibility of playing in his homeland. Not only is Taibu Zimbabwe’s convener of selectors but he also plays a role in development, having spent a significant part of the English winter touring with an academy side of young Zimbabwean players. The players from the academy became Zimbabwe’s fifth domestic team, Rising Stars, and it is this side that Byrom will represent, in the hope that he will bolster their batting.”Eddie has been in England, opening the batting with Marcus Trescothick in a strong Somerset side. It’s this experience that could be very useful for our squad and will definitely help to bring some stability,” Stuart Matsikenyeri, the Rising Stars coach, said.Rising Stars have lost both their Logan Cup matches so far but have earned the praise of former national captain Taylor, who played against them for Mid-West Rhinos in the season-opening round two weeks ago. Taylor scored a century but said he had to “work my butt off” for those runs and believed that the Rising Stars bowling “warranted them receiving first-class status”. He also said he thought their batting needed propping up, so it stands to reason that Byrom has been included. He has already arrived in Zimbabwe and is expected to play in the Rising Stars’ next match, against the Matabeleland Tuskers, starting on Sunday. “I’ve already had my first training session with the squad and I’ve been impressed with their hard work and commitment. Obviously we have lost the first couple of games so hopefully we can bounce back from that and I can play a part. I can’t wait to get started,” Byrom said.Byrom’s return will undoubtedly raise interest in whether he will avail himself for the national side but the administration is not looking to push him into choosing just yet. “Right now we simply don’t know [if he will play for Zimbabwe],” Matsikenyeri said. “He has his contract with Somerset and we respect that. If he can contribute with the bat and help the Rising Stars to start climbing the ladder, then we’ll be happy with that.”

Late wickets leave Bangladesh in trouble after Sri Lanka's 713

The fall of three late Bangladesh wickets lent hope the Chittagong Test may yet produce a result, after Sri Lanka had secured a first-innings lead of 200, amassing 713 for 9

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando03-Feb-2018Dinesh Chandimal tucks the ball past short leg•Associated Press

The fall of three late Bangladesh wickets lent hope the Chittagong Test may yet produce a result, after Sri Lanka had secured a first-innings lead of 200, amassing 713 for 9. Roshen Silva completed an assured hundred, Dinesh Chandimal a measured 87 and Niroshan Dickwella a rapid 62, but it was Sri Lanka’s spinners who truly breathed life into the game. Finding turn with the almost-new ball, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandakan and Rangana Herath struck once each in the final 12 overs of the day. With both Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal among those dismissed, the Bangladesh middle order is now charged with carrying them to safety on day five. They are still 119 runs behind. The late wickets came after the hosts had begun their second innings with such confidence. Tamim Iqbal was not quite as belligerent as he had been in the first innings, but he was nevertheless positive, stroking Herath through midwicket early in his innings, before delectably flicking Suranga Lakmal through square leg in the fourth over. Sri Lanka raised some good lbw shouts, but batting still appeared a relatively uncomplicated exercise. Imrul Kayes was quieter than Tamim, but hardly seemed to be struggling. It was in the over that Imrul was dismissed that the vibe changed. Tamim was beaten twice by turning Dilruwan Perera deliveries before he finally managed to get himself off strike off the fifth ball. Imrul then somehow managed to get the toe-end of his bat to an attempted ramp shot, and the ball looped out towards the square leg fielder, who completed an easy take. The remaining 11.5 overs were tense; only two boundaries were struck before stumps. Tamim was largely to blame for his dismissal – prodding at a Sandakan ball that was not threatening the stumps, only to send a thin edge to the wicketkeeper. Mushfiqur, however, can consider himself very unlucky. He got forward to defend a full delivery from Herath, only for the ball to hit his bat and bounce off his shoe. Kusal Mendis took a good low catch at silly point.Sri Lanka’s march to their gargantuan score was, it must be said, utterly tedious viewing, even if it may turn out to be in service of a Test win. The morning session was another speckled with Sri Lanka milestones – Roshen and Chandimal bringing up the third century stand of the innings, before Roshen completed a proficient maiden Test ton. Later in the session, after Roshen had been caught behind off a Mehidy Hasan delivery, Sri Lanka ploughed on past 600. Bangladesh’s bowlers were by now in various states of fatigue, and their four front-line bowlers had all conceded over 100 runs apiece.Where there had been urgency in the progress of Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis on day three, Chandimal had largely been content to inch along, hitting three boundaries off the 185 deliveries he faced. Had he scored 13 more runs, he would have had a fifth Test century against Bangladesh, but soon after lunch, he allowed a straight Taijul Islam delivery to wriggle between bat and pad. The afternoon was enlivened, if only mildly, by Niroshan Dickwella’s aggression and Mehidy’s bowling.Dickwella’s sweeps and reverse-sweeps kept Sri Lanka’s score rolling – the most impressive of those shots the flat reverse sweep against Taijul that scorched to the boundary in front of square. Mehidy flighted the ball nicely and read the batsmen’s intentions well, often firing it fast and flat if he sensed his opponent would make an advance down the pitch. For his enduring boldness, Mehidy was rewarded with Dickwella’s wicket – the batsman top-edging an ill-advised reverse-sweep against the turn, to a ball that pitched well outside his leg stump. In the previous session, Dickwella had survived an lbw shout against Mehidy that could have fairly been given out, though the not-out decision would not have been overturned on review either.Dilruwan Perera contributed a largely uneventful 32 to the score, but when three quick wickets fell either side of tea, Chandimal decided Sri Lanka had batted long enough. All up, they had kept Bangladesh in the field for 199.3 overs, which was only three balls fewer than the longest stretch in the field a Bangladesh side had ever endured. Taijul’s workload was immense – he had bowled 67.3 overs in the innings.

Kings XI Punjab appoint David Miller captain

Kings XI Punjab have named South Africa batsman David Miller captain for IPL 2016. Last year the team was captained by Australia’s George Bailey, but the franchise had not retained Bailey this season

Miller blitzes his way to KXIP captaincy

Kings XI Punjab have named South Africa batsman David Miller captain for IPL 2016. Last year the team was captained by Australia’s George Bailey, but the franchise had not retained Bailey this season.Sanjay Bangar, Kings XI’s coach, said Miller had the right temperament to lead. “I have watched David grow as a player. He has displayed outstanding batting abilities and a cool temperament in many high-pressure situations,” Bangar said. “I am confident in his potential to lead the boys this season.”While he has little captaincy experience on the South African domestic circuit, Miller, 26, is a key batting cog in Kings XI’s line-up. He has been with them since the 2011 season, signed in April 2011 as a replacement player for England allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas. In 2015, he was the only batsman to score more than 300 runs for them, hitting 357 at 32.45, with a strike rate of 134.21. It was a poor year overall for the team, which finished last in the league stage of the tournament. Ahead of the IPL auction this year, Miller was one of four overseas players retained – the others being Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson.Miller’s appointment comes a few days after Kings XI appointed retired India batsman Virender Sehwag team mentor.Squad: David Miller, Swapnil Singh, M Vijay, Wriddhiman Saha, Rishi Dhawan, Kyle Abbott, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Pardeep Sahu, Anureet Singh, Sandeep Sharma, Farhaan Behardien, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Sharma, Manan Vohra, Gurkeerat Singh, Axar Patel, Nikhil Naik, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, KC Cariappa, Armaan Jaffer

'Stirling's talent deserves worldwide exposure' – Morgan

Paul Stirling contributed 52 off 23 balls in a 113-run partnership with Eoin Morgan, which handed Kerala Kings the T10 title at Sharjah Cricket Stadium

Paul Stirling’s talent deserves to be seen by a worldwide audience more often, as evidenced by his spectacular form at the T10 League. That is the view of Eoin Morgan, the England captain who is Stirling’s team-mate at Middlesex, as well as his captain at the Kerala Kings T10 franchise.Kerala won the 10-over tournament at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday night, after chasing down Punjabi Legends’ target of 121 in the space of just eight overs. The remarkable assault was led by Morgan and Stirling, who put on 113 together in 41 balls.Over the course of the tournament, Stirling scored 181 runs in five matches, at an average of 90.50 and a strike-rate of 197. That was off the back of a century in an ODI against Afghanistan for Ireland at the same ground four days before the T10 League started.Morgan believes Stirling’s talent has largely been hidden because of a relative lack of exposure his Ireland team had had before their recent elevation to Full Member status.”I’ve played a lot with Paul, more so at Middlesex than anywhere else, and I have watched him come through,” Morgan said. “He is a hugely talented player, and I am really pleased for him that he has performed on a stage like this that is broadcast all around the world.”It is fantastic for him, because potentially he doesn’t get the exposure that he should, being now a Test cricketer but back then an Associate cricketer. It is great to see him expose his talent.”The tournament was, predictably, characterised by lusty hitting, but the final evening at a sold-out Sharjah Cricket Stadium was particularly savage.Luke Ronchi hit a 35-ball 70 as Punjabi Legends made 120 for 3 from their 10 overs. That was not remotely near enough, though, once Morgan and Stirling were in harness.Morgan reached his half-century in just 14 balls, and hit a six onto the top of the grandstand roof that measured 113 metres. He eventually got to 63 from 21 balls, but fell just before the win was sealed. His display even garnered some respect from his opposition. Hasan Ali, who got by relatively unscathed with figures of 1 for 23 from his two overs, asked Morgan if he could have his bat after the game, so impressed was he by the distances he was reaching.Stirling was delighted with his latest alliance with his county and former Ireland team-mate.”I watched Eoin bat a lot when I was growing up, and he was always kind of an idol of mine and I wanted to emulate him, and go over and play for Middlesex,” Stirling said.”For the last number of years it has been great to bat with him, and we seem to put on a few good partnerships together, especially in the recent years, so it was nice to get another one of those today.”It is good fun. He is a nice, relaxed captain. There aren’t too many team meetings, not too many warm-ups. It is all individual – if you want to do it, you do it, and if you don’t, you don’t have to.”It creates that relaxed environment that allows players to go out and perform at their best.”Punjabi Legends only made it through to the semi-finals after Carlos Brathwaite hit the last ball of the round-robin phase for six, despite a defeat to Maratha Arabians. They then beat the previously unbeaten Pakhtoons to reach the final. With Misbah-ul-Haq captaining the side, their run to the final had echoes of the late charge his Islamabad United side made to win the first Pakistan Super League.”We were quite confident with the way we came back in this tournament, but obviously Kerala played the better cricket,” Misbah said. “They deserved to win it, but still I think what we achieved in this tournament, playing as the first time in T10, we are proud of it.”

Last-gasp win makes success sweeter for New Zealand

New Zealand kept their unbeaten ODI run alive, inflicting a rare defeat on England, in a contest which tested their resilience with bat and ball

New Zealand are a victory away from equalling their best streak in ODIs of 10 wins on the bounce, and number nine of the current sequence was their most satisfying yet as they overcame a formidable England team in a contest that twisted and turned through 100 overs.West Indies barely offered a fight in the first ODI series of New Zealand’s season and though Pakistan occasionally challenged them, it only really came after the series had been decided. At Seddon Park on Sunday, New Zealand grabbed the early initiative inflicting England’s first defeat in a live bilateral ODI since the India series last January. The sight of Ross Taylor scoring a masterful hundred should come as no surprise – it was his 18th in ODIs, although among his better ones – but around him New Zealand found fresh matchwinners. Tom Latham, who had endured a barren run of ODI form at home since his century against Bangladesh in late 2016, counterpunched when England were on top and most thrillingly Mitchell Santner sealed victory with a late dart. To win without contributions from Martin Guptill or Kane Williamson was a big tick for the home side.”The partnership between Ross and Tom certainly set it up and was deserved of a good finish,” the coach, Mike Hesson, said. “We lost our way a little but the way Santner and even Tim [Southee] came out and were composed at the end was good for us”Under pressure, a lot of times [the middle order] have had to come in and play cameos, be quite selfless. Sunday was quite different, they had to play a substantial innings and the way Tom and Ross set the side up was exceptional”That’s why we play six frontline batsmen, you can’t always rely on your top order to set the platform even though they’ve done it for the majority of the summer. It was nice for the middle order to dominate.”For Latham it was just his second fifty-plus score in 32 ODI innings at home – and nine of his previous 13 knocks in New Zealand had been single-figures – while Santner’s batting has faded, or at least stalled, as his spin bowling had improved.”Tom’s been in good touch the last week or so,” Hesson said. “He got in really good positions yesterday which shows that he’s put the work. We know he’s a quality player. He’s taken the keeping on as well so we’ve asked quite a lot of him. He made a great start in India [last October], struggled a little bit at home and he’s been reminded of that a few times but we know he’s a good player. The more experience he gets in the role the better he’ll get.”Mitch has been doing that in the nets for us for a long time, we know what a good striker he is. He played nicely against these guys at Trent Bridge a while ago and showed his power, so it’s always nice for someone to get us over the line. He’s put a heck of a lot of work into his batting in recent times and nice to see it come off.”The chance of victory was restored by the Taylor-Latham alliance of 178 and capped off by Santner, but in a game of so many subplots New Zealand’s performance with the ball should not be forgotten. Tim Southee and Trent Boult excelled at both ends of the innings – the first 10 overs brought 41 runs, the last 67 – while someone snagged a breakthrough each time England threatened to get away. Hesson, who was a touch more critical of the bowling performance in the middle 30 overs, singled out Colin Munro’s knuckle ball to deceive Joe Root as a key moment.”The ability to keep taking wickets throughout the innings was critical, even though they can bat to 11 you’ve still got to start,” Hesson said. “If we can keep bringing out new guys, you earn yourselves some dots, a reprieve really. The key to any one-day game is to make sure you can still have an attacking option at one end.”We kept chipping away, we didn’t really go bang, bang but we just chipped away when they started to get away from us. I think the wicket of Joe Root was critical for us, to get them five down meant we got five overs of them trying to rebuild a little.”

Rahane reveals thinking behind India's quick feet

Dancing down the track to Rangana Herath has proved a productive tactic for India’s batsmen in this series, with the knock-on effect of creating opportunities to score off the back foot as well

Sidharth Monga at the SSC04-Aug-2017Ajinkya Rahane has revealed that India have made a conscious effort to attack the spinners on their tour of Sri Lanka, and in particular use their feet against Rangana Herath, the prime threat. As a result they have piled on successive 600-plus first-innings totals, and have all but neutralised the threat of Herath, whose average against India since fashioning the Galle win in 2015 is 53.61, and economy rate 3.58.In all, India’s batsmen have left the crease 84 times when facing Herath in this series, taking 123 runs off those balls while losing two wickets, Wriddhiman Saha the batsman dismissed on both occasions. It is not just the runs scored off those balls, though. There are also the short balls earned in the bargain.”When we played last time here against Sri Lanka, especially after Galle Test match, we decided that using footwork against him was very important,” Rahane said. “Here again in the first Test, Shikhar [Dhawan, scoring 190] batted really well, but throughout against him and their spinners we wanted to use our footwork so we could get more runs on the back foot. Especially on this kind of wicket, it is very slow and dry, so we knew that if we use our footwork we will get more runs on the back foot.”So when I went in to bat with Pujara we decided to change our momentum because Virat [Kohli] got out and we wanted to put pressure back on them, and that’s what we did. So we knew using footwork we would get more runs on the front foot as well as the back foot.”This was Rahane’s first century since Indore last year, but he said he was confident his batting was in good enough shape. “It was important, but for me I was confident,” Rahane said. “Even throughout that time, not getting a hundred for 9-10 Tests, I was confident about myself. I knew that if I get in I will get to a big one. It was all about thinking positive even throughout that period.”Coming to Sri Lanka, I was batting well in West Indies as well so wanted to carry that form forward. And batted well in the first Test. So here I decided if I play positively I will convert it to a big one.”The result was what Rahane called one of his best innings against spinners. He has historically had some issues against spin even though he has proved himself against quick bowling in South Africa, New Zealand, England and Australia. As a No. 5, he often comes in at a time when the ball has begun to turn and reverse. The case here was similar: India had lost two quick wickets, and were 133 for 3 with the ball taking turn. He came out and began to attack the spinners.”My mindset was completely blank coming into this innings,” Rahane said. “I wanted to take my time initially but later on, we thought if we dominate, if we change the momentum, they will be on the back foot straightaway, and that’s what happened. Because the same thinking was in Melbourne [in December 2014] in Australia, wanted to dominate them and that’s what we did.”But here the challenge was slightly different, a spinning-friendly wicket and we knew that if we get a good partnership – because I was talking to Virat in the dressing room before lunch that if we get a 150-200 partnership, one big partnership, they will be on the back foot and that’s what actually happened. Me and [Cheteshwar] Pujara got that partnership.”
