Arteta thinks £192k-per-week star is "perfect" as Arsenal ready January move

da bet7: Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has taken a personal liking to one highly-rated player who he believes would be an excellent fit for the Gunners, with interim sporting director Jason Ayto and the recruitment team “set” to move for him in January.

Arteta opens door to January signings as Arsenal eye new attacker

da bet7k: Arteta, speaking in a press conference this week, hinted that the north Londoners could well dip their toes into the winter transfer market – following a first half of the Premier League campaign which has been blighted by injuries to key players.

Arsenal in "serious danger" of losing £200k-per-week starter after N5 talks

It would be a blow for Arteta.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 13, 2024

Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Riccardo Calafiori, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Gabriel Magalhaes, Jurrien Timber, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ben White and others have all spent some time on the sidelines at various points, and a few of the aforementioned names remain unavailable in what is a blow for Arteta.

White is out until next year after undergoing surgery on his knee, while Tomiyasu has been away from Arsenal for outside treatment on his own knee problem.

Luckily for Arsenal, they could welcome back star defender Gabriel, with the Brazilian set to undergo a late fitness test ahead of their crucial Premier League game at home to Everton on Saturday.

“There is a possibility [for Gabriel] to be available,” the Spaniard said in his pre-Everton press conference this afternoon.

“He trained today. We will see tomorrow.”

Unfortunately, both Zinchenko and Calafiori are set to miss Everton and remain out, with Arteta dealt some selection headaches ahead of their clash with the Toffees – which has been quite common for the Arsenal boss this term.

The 42-year-old has therefore refused to rule out the possibility of Arsenal signing players in January, saying it could be an opportunity to strengthen in key areas.

One of the main areas they’ve been tipped to bolster is in attack, and specifically a striker. Gabriel Jesus is continuing his barren run with just one goal in all competitions so far, meaning Arteta is heavily reliant on Kai Havertz to deliver in a makeshift number nine role.

Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic, who has bagged 10 goals in all competitions so far this term, is rumoured to be a key transfer target.

The Serbian’s deal expires in 2026 and there is still no sign of a renewal, with elite clubs across Europe, including Arsenal, sensing an opportunity.

Arteta thinks Vlahovic is "perfect" with Arsenal "set" to move in January

According to CaughtOffside, Arteta thinks Vlahovic is the “perfect” striker for Arsenal, and his club are “set” to make a move for him in January as a result.

The former Fiorentina star, on a reported salary of around £192,000-per-week (Football Italia), making him the highest-paid player in Serie A, would cost the club around £58 million to prise away from Juve next month – but that may not be Arsenal’s biggest obstacle.

Indeed, Vlahovic is attracting interest from numerous other prestigious suitors in the form of Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City – who are all keeping tabs on the 24-year-old.

It is worth noting that the forward has been a big-game player this season, bagging goals against Serie A champions Inter Milan domestically and versus City in the Champions League.

BBL round-up: Dooley's delight, Neser vs Russell and honest Billings

What were the standout and eye-catching happenings over the past week?

Andrew McGlashan26-Dec-2022

Paddy Dooley, Michael Neser and Andre Russell had moments to remember•Getty Images

Hooley Dooley
What a week Paddy Dooley has had. The left-arm spinner, who has modeled his unorthodox action on Jasprit Bumrah, has suddenly become a trump card in Hobart Hurricanes’ attack. Last season he was hastily called up by Brisbane Heat during their Covid outbreak and caught the eye of Ricky Ponting, Hurricanes’ head of strategy. He took four wickets against Perth Scorchers, including the key scalps of Faf du Plessis and Josh Inglis, then added two wickets against both Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades. “It’s an added bonus at this stage that I’m new for people but I’ve still got a few things I’m working on as well to develop it as there’s more footage of me going around,” he told cricket.com.au shortly before his matchwinning performance against Scorchers.Related

Thunder lose their captain
It’s been a difficult start to the season for Sydney Thunder. There was the 15 all out and then the shock departure of Fazalhaq Farooqi in controversial circumstances. Sandwiched in the middle of that they have lost their captain Jason Sangha for the season after he fractured his collarbone against Renegades. He has since undergone surgery with Chris Green taking charge of the team. An interesting aspect to this is that the original big push to have David Warner’s leadership ban overturned came from Thunder. That, of course, has fallen by the wayside – and he would never have been a long-term option given international commitments – but should Green now get injured while Warner is around after the South Africa Tests they’ll need to look elsewhere for a stand-in captain. A hat-trick and huge sixes
There was a hectic chase in the game between Renegades and Heat in Geelong. After Heat had limped to 137 for 8, Michael Neser, released from the Test squad earlier that day, struck with the first ball of the innings. But that was just the start. By the third over he had a hat-trick – although not that he was aware – with Jake Fraser-McGurk caught behind, Nic Maddinson dragging on and then Jono Wells leaving a delivery that rocked back off stump. Renegades were 9 for 4 and Andre Russell was within a whisker of also going first ball, but then deposited his fourth onto the roof over deep midwicket. When Russell had 24 runs they had all come in sixes. A sixth six brought up fifty from 32 balls before a big hack had him caught behind. But, after Akeal Hosein fell just short of finishing the job, Will Sutherland took a leaf out of Russell’s book with another six onto the roof.Scorchers go big
Scorchers took the honours of being the first side to pass 200 this season. Junction Oval provided prime conditions – a flat pitch and short boundaries – and they took full advantage. du Plessis set the tone and was on track for a century before being taken in the deep, but Inglis took over with an innings full of flair and invention. This BBL is a big chance for Inglis to get a consistent run of cricket after being in and out of enlarged Covid squads then suffered a freak golf injury before the T20 World Cup. Scorchers have had to contend with a number of challenges around their list but they continue to look a very strong outfit with all bases covered.Billings’ honest assessment
England’s Sam Billings was one of the players on the microphone during Heat’s clash against Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba – Chris Lynn’s return to his former club. His candor was illuminating, calling out some of the tactics of his own team which he thought was letting them down in what became a tight encounter. In the end, Heat got over the line to end a run of eight consecutive defeats which spanned this season and last. Billings had played the key hand with 79 off 48 balls after Heat had been trouble at 12 for 2 and 86 for 5. He continued his honest appraisal when named player of the match. “We didn’t play very well, let’s be honest, but we managed to get the win and that’s what the best sides do,” Billings said. “We’ll take a lot of confidence from that, but we know that we can be so much better in all three facets of the game. We’ve got to be way better than that if we want to be in serious contention.”Fraser-McGurk adds to his highlights reel Limping O’Keefe
Ahead of the tournament, Sydney Sixers spinner Steve O’Keefe spoke to ESPNcricinfo about playing another season and did flag the risk of tweaking a calf muscle. Sadly, that almost looks to have come true. Against Melbourne Stars at the SCG, O’Keefe appeared to suffer a leg injury in his opening over. However, to his immense credit he returned to the field to complete his spell – a miserly 1 for 16 from four overs with 12 dots balls – which helped keep Stars to a chaseable total.Performance of the week
It’s for a series of performances this time, with Paddy Dooley twice playing key roles in wins for Hurricanes. After his four-wicket haul against Scorchers he then took 2 for 23 against Renegades on Christmas Eve to help defend the second-lowest total (in a non-rain-reduced game) to claim victory in the BBL. Even in Hurricanes’ loss to Sixers he was excellent with for 2 for 19 including a wonderful delivery to remove Jordan Silk.

Can India stop New Zealand's home juggernaut in high-scoring Hamilton?

The hosts have won each of their last 13 home ODIs, and each of their last five meetings with India

Himanshu Agrawal26-Nov-20223:08

Jaffer: India might be tempted to go with Kuldeep in place of Chahal

Big picture
With 16 matches, New Zealand have played the second-fewest ODIs of any team in the ongoing World Cup Super League. But just one more win, and they can topple India from the top of the table. Given that they’ve won each of their last 13 ODIs at home, the odds would favour them to do just that.Having seemingly moved on from Trent Boult and Martin Guptill, the hosts seem to have built a solid foundation as they build towards the 2023 World Cup. Michael Bracewell isn’t a guaranteed starter despite his stellar recent form, and even injury to James Neesham couldn’t prevent them from beating India comfortably in the series-opener in Auckland.Their quartet of fast bowlers offer both pace and movement, while Neesham, Bracewell and Mitchell Santner complete a trio of allrounders. Batting depth might be New Zealand’s one major concern, given that they can’t accommodate all their allrounders, and that Tim Southee’s returns with the bat have faded of late.India, meanwhile, are still in search of a sixth bowling option. None of the top six batters who played in Auckland bowl, and with no Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel in their squad for this series, they also have a lack of experience in the lower middle order. They could look to address the sixth-bowler issue by bringing Deepak Hooda into their line-up, but that would leave them with the dilemma of who to leave out. They have the luxury of experimenting, however, since they have automatically qualified as hosts of next year’s World Cup. But they still have a series to win, which would need them, first and foremost, to win on Sunday and end a five-match losing streak against New Zealand.Form guide
New Zealand: WLLLW
India: LWWLWIn the spotlight
Kane Williamson has played just seven ODIs since the 2019 World Cup, with five of them coming this year. A troublesome elbow and the Covid-19 pandemic combined to limit his participation in the format, and his seven innings in this time have brought only one 50-plus score. That came at Eden Park on Friday, when he selflessly kept giving the dangerous Tom Latham the strike, and eventually ended up six short of a century. With less than a year left for the World Cup, New Zealand will not only hope their captain puts his fitness worries behind him and features more regularly in ODIs, but also that he makes big scores as often as he used to.Yuzvendra Chahal has been the third-highest wicket-taker among spinners from Full-Member teams in ODIs this year, with 21 wickets at an average of 27.09. But he’s not had a great time of it in recent weeks. Having spent the entire T20 World Cup on the bench, Chahal returned to action on this tour of New Zealand, where he has taken a bit of stick: he went for 35 in three overs in the tied third T20I, and began this ODI series with a wicketless 10 overs that went for 66 runs. With intense competition in the spin department ahead of the 2023 World Cup, Chahal will need a swift return to his best to remain among India’s first-choice options.India’s top order can look forward to good batting conditions judging by the trend of high-scoring games at Seddon Park•Getty Images

Team news
New Zealand were forced to leave Neesham out in Auckland due to a niggle. If he returns, they might have a difficult choice to make. While they will welcome the extra batting depth he offers if he replaces one of the four specialist quicks, they might need him to bowl his full ten-over quota, with Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips having been used very sparingly of late.New Zealand (probable): 1 Finn Allen, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Tom Latham (wk), 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 James Neesham, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Matt Henry, 11 Lockie FergusonThere is a chance India might bring in Hooda as a sixth bowling option, but this could force them to leave out Suryakumar Yadav, who hasn’t yet replicated his T20I success in ODIs. He was the only member of India’s top seven to be dismissed for a single-digit score in Auckland, and his last seven ODI innings have brought him a highest score of just 27. India’s three fast bowlers were all expensive in Auckland, so there is a chance that Deepak Chahar could replace one of them.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Suryakumar Yadav/Deepak Hooda, 6 Sanju Samson, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Shardul Thakur/Deepak Chahar, 9 Umran Malik, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalPitch and conditions
Seddon Park in Hamilton has hosted only three ODIs since 2020, with two of them producing first-innings scores in excess of 330. India scored 347 in one of them, only for New Zealand to hunt it down comfortably thanks to a Ross Taylor century. Expect another high-scoring game come Sunday. There remains a good chance of rain interrupting play, however, with showers forecast throughout the afternoon and evening.Stats and trivia
India posted contrasting totals of 92 in 2019 and 347 in 2020 while batting first in their last two ODIs at Seddon Park, and lost both matches. Tim Southee got to 200 ODI wickets while taking 3 for 73 in the first ODI, and two more wickets will take him past Chris Harris and into third place among New Zealand’s highest ODI wicket-takers. Since Dhawan’s ODI debut, only three batters have scored at least 6000 runs at a 90-plus strike rate. Dhawan’s strike rate is second on that list, sandwiched between those of his team-mates Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.Quotes
“You can catch up, and give yourself more time. It’s 50 overs… you’ve got that time up your sleeve to get the innings going and play your innings.”

Injuries mount for Ange with £150m Tottenham star also out for weeks

da lvbet: Under-fire boss Ange Postecoglou is already dealing with an injury-hit Tottenham Hotspur squad right now, but it is now rumoured that another star player in their squad is set to be sidelined for weeks.

Tottenham injuries and suspensions

Shortlisted: Tottenham looking at "sensational" Postecoglou replacement

The promising managerial talent could be the answer to Spurs’ problems.

Bentancur is in the midst of a domestic ban from the FA, while Bissouma is set to be ineligible until their clash against Liverpool on December 22 after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign in their 4-3 defeat at home to Chelsea on Sunday.

It is unclear whether Mikey Moore will finally return from his illness to face Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, with star winger Brennan Johnson in the same boat after Postecoglou hauled the in-form Welshman off against Chelsea.

“Brennan just didn’t feel well,” said Postecoglou on Johnson’s substitution against Chelsea.

“He didn’t feel well at half-time, but he wanted to give it a go. He just wasn’t feeling 100 per cent, so I had to take him off.”

Left-back Ben Davies missed Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea with a thigh injury, while striker Richarlison, goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and summer signing Wilson Odobert are all sidelined with long-term injuries and won’t be back until the new year.

Postecoglou was gifted a reprieve when star centre-backs Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven returned to the starting line-up on Sunday, but the former was replaced after just 15 minutes.

Van de Ven was taken off later in the 90 after feeling tightness (Postecoglou), but it is far more worrying for Romero, who apparently picked up a fresh injury around his quadriceps.

“Romero is just obviously hugely disappointing,” said Postecoglou on Romero’s injury against Chelsea.

“He felt something in his quad. He trained really well. He wasn’t the one I was worried about, to be honest, but, you know, it’s just like I said, the way the season’s going for us unfortunately. So we just have to wait and see.”

Tottenham set to be without Romero for six weeks after fresh injury

The Argentina international had been sidelined with a toe injury, but this instance is a completely separate problem, with TyC Sports reporter Gaston Edul providing an update on the £150 million defender’s condition.

Edu, taking to X, writes that Romero will be sidelined for six weeks at Tottenham after his fresh muscle injury, dealing a major blow to Postecoglou, who must now contend without his “unbelievable” player yet again.

As a result, the former Atalanta star won’t return to the field until 2025, and he is set to miss crucial games against Liverpool and in the Europa League.

Slot must unleash "unstoppable" Liverpool star who can terrorise Walker

da bet nacional: Liverpool are riding on the crest of a wave right now, and they face Manchester City at precisely the right time.

da marjack bet: While the Anfield side are currently on a 15-game unbeaten run across all competitions, City have failed to win any of their previous six games, going through their most difficult period under Pep Guardiola.

The Reds hold an eight point lead at the top of the table and should Arne Slot’s side go on to defeat City this afternoon, it could put another dent in Guardiola’s title ambitions.

Manchester City’s defensive frailties

Since their win over Southampton on October 26, the club have conceded 17 goals in just six games, scoring only seven times during that time period.

Guardiola’s defenders certainly struggled, most notably Kyle Walker, who was helpless against Tottenham Hotspur last week as they ran riot, scoring four without reply to inflict one of the heaviest defeats the former Barcelona manager has endured.

Walker may have won four of his five total duels contested, yet the right-back made just one tackle and one clearance in the defeat as he was run ragged by Heung-min Son for Spurs, who shone on the left wing.

If Liverpool aim to secure all three points, then targeting the 34-year-old could be one way of piling on more misery for City this weekend, that’s for sure.

Kyle Walker

Who will Slot unleash on the left flank, however?

The Liverpool star who can terrorise Walker

There is no denying how impressive Luis Diaz has been this term, registering 11 goal contributions – nine goals and two assists – in just 18 matches under Slot.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz celebrates

Against Real Madrid in midweek, Diaz wasn’t quite at his sparkling best, missing two big chances, winning just two of his nine ground duels and losing possession ten times during the clash.

Cody Gakpo entered the game with 20 minutes left, taking over from Darwin Núñez, and he ended up getting on the scoresheet along with succeeding with 100% of his dribbles and making one key pass.

Although he was deployed through the middle against the La Liga side, perhaps Slot could unleash the Dutchman on the left flank so he can terrorise Walker this afternoon.

In the Premier League last season, Gakpo ranked in the top 15% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.69) and in the top 28% for progressive carries per 90 (2.35), clearly indicating that he could be a major threat out wide for the Reds.

Cody Gakpo scores for Liverpool

During the 2022 World Cup, Statman Dave hailed his performance against Qatar as “unstoppable” and if he can replicate this sort of form, Walker is in for a rough 90 minutes, that’s for sure.

The Anfield side have a wonderful chance to stretch their advantage at the top of the table with a victory against City. If they do, then Slot’s men could be difficult to catch in the Premier League this season.
