Celtic can save millions on Miller by unleashing teen who impressed Rodgers

da dobrowin: The summer transfer window brought with it something of a midfield overhaul for Celtic and Brendan Rodgers, with the Northern Irishman seeking ways to plug the gaping hole left behind by Matt O’Riley.

da betobet: Out went the Denmark international – and to a lesser extent, Tomoki Iwata – with the Hoops moving to fill that sizeable, creative void by snapping up Arne Engels, Paulo Bernardo and Luke McCowan.

In the case of McCowan, the 26-year-old was plucked from Dundee on a bargain £1m deal, having since gone on to score twice in the Premiership for his new club, despite being restricted to just two league starts thus far.

As with the case of the likes of Ryan Christie and Stuart Armstrong before him – the pair arriving from Inverness and Dundee United, respectively – recruiting young talents from within Scottish football is often a good route to success, with it looking as if the Old Firm side are hoping to continue that trend with a move for Motherwell’s rising star, Lennon Miller.

Celtic's pursuit of Lennon Miller

In truth, links to the 18-year-old sensation have become rather inevitable amid his sparkling form in recent times at Fir Park, with the teenager already boasting four goals and three assists in 18 appearances this season.

That impact for his current side has even seen Miller take on the captain’s armband in recent weeks despite his relative youth, with a senior call-up to the Scotland squad no doubt in the pipeline.

Amid that stunning rise, the Daily Mail have reported that both Celtic and rivals Rangers are likely to make a move for the playmaker in January, albeit with neither side having yet made an approach.

The suggestion is that Well will demand a fee of at least £4m, thus eclipsing their record £3m sale of David Turnbull to Parkhead back in the summer of 2020.

That £4m fee could ultimately prove a bargain on the basis of Miller’s current form, yet might Celtic save themselves the outlay by looking to promote from within instead, rather than getting embroiled in any sort of transfer tug-of-war – with Premier League side Liverpool also lurking.

Celtic's potential answer to Lennon Miller

The common theme for Celtic in recent times has been for their brightest young talents to move on elsewhere before making a real impression at senior level.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The most notable recent examples are, of course, Ben Doak and Rocco Vata – who joined Liverpool and Watford, respectively – although further cases also occurred with the loss of Leo Hjelde to Leeds United, as well as Daniel Kelly’s summer move to Millwall.

In the case of Kelly, in particular, the promising midfielder turned down what was said to be a “lucrative” contract offer from the Celtic board, with fears growing that a similar scenario could occur with prolific striker, Daniel Cummings, who has netted 20 goals this season.

Thankfully for Rodgers and co, the future of young Francis Turley has at least been secured after he signed a new four-year deal earlier this year, with the 18-year-old midfielder offering a potential alternative to splashing the cash on Miller.

Of course, Turley’s involvement on the senior stage has been limited after making just a solitary, late cameo against St Mirren earlier in the campaign, although he has caught the eye in the academy ranks, after scoring three times and registering one assist in just four UEFA Youth League outings in 2024/25.

The Northern Ireland youth international has certainly captured the attention of his manager and compatriot, with Rodgers outlining just how “impressed” he has been with the young maestro following his senior bow against the Saints:

As the former Leicester City boss outlined, putting pressure on Turley at such a young age could be foolish, yet what would it say to further block his route to game time by signing a fellow teenager in Miller?

There must undoubtedly be frustration brewing at the constant drain of young talent – such as Doak, Vata and Kelly et al – but at some stage, greater faith needs to be placed in an academy asset at first-team level.

Not since the days of Kieran Tierney – who was eventually sold for a handsome £25m fee – has an in-house prospect truly cemented a starting role for themselves.

That maybe speaks to the quality of those produced – as well as the pressure to keep winning, rather than having the time to blood youngsters – but the next step for Celtic must surely be to properly promote from within.

Of course, Motherwell’s Miller is a diamond worth chasing, but would it hurt to give a figure like Turley a chance to prove himself instead?

Dan Lawrence shores up Essex before Fin Bean shines in reply

Yorkshire trail by four overnight as young opener helps atone for first-innings failings

England Test batter Dan Lawrence hit the game’s only half-century so far – a cautious 61 – as Essex claimed a slender advantage at the halfway point of their LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Yorkshire.During a sunny second day at Headingley, Lawrence reached 50 for only the fifth time in all cricket during a summer beset by injury as Essex replied to Yorkshire’s first-innings 134 with 225.No other batter from either side has yet raised their bat in a bowler-dominated Division One fixture, though young Yorkshire opener Fin Bean is closing in having reached close unbeaten on 41 out of 87 for two from 27.4 overs of their second innings. The hosts, who trail by four, fought hard with ball and then bat to stay in the hunt for only a second win in 2022. But they lost George Hill caught at slip in the day’s final over.Yorkshire enjoyed a useful morning followed by a super start to the afternoon, with Essex falling to 105 for six.Jordan Thompson claimed the first two wickets to fall and later finished with four for 60, while new ball partner Ben Coad’s first of two wickets was the 200th of his first-class career.Thompson uprooted Nick Browne’s off stump with his first ball, at the start of the day’s second over, before ousting Tom Westley as the first of five lbws in the first six wickets.Steve Patterson also trapped Sir Alastair Cook in front for 23 as the former England captain played back to one which skidded through. It was the seventh time in the last seven Championship games the two have been playing that Patterson has removed the left-hander.Essex reached lunch at 79 for three from 33 overs. But things changed quickly.Thompson returned immediately at the start of the afternoon and struck in his first over for the second session running as Matt Critchley was lbw.And when Feroze Khushi and Adam Rossington were trapped lbw with deliveries which kept low from Coad in the space of six overs, Essex were six-down in the 41st over and still 29 runs adrift. The Khushi wicket, Coad’s first, was number 200.However, the day’s pendulum was about to swing again as Essex reasserted their authority thanks largely to their hard-hitting seamer Snater, who freewheeled his side into the lead.Snater hit well down the ground off front foot and back and pulled Thompson for six to secure a lead at 135 for six in the 47th over.He shared 75 inside 15 overs with Lawrence, whom he passed in the mid-forties. The England man had been on 25 when Snater came to the crease.Lawrence, who faced 145 balls, was more than happy to play second fiddle before Snater pulled Hill’s seam to midwicket, where sub fielder Ben Mike held on for his first contribution in a Yorkshire shirt having joined from Leicestershire. At 180 for seven, Essex led by 46.Lawrence reached his fifty shortly afterwards off 118 balls, his fifth of a frustrating summer which has literally been hamstrung having returned from England’s spring Test tour of the West Indies. The 25-year-old suffered two hamstring injuries during the early stages of the campaign and has had to find his way again for the likes of Essex, the Lions and the London Spirit whilst England’s senior team were winning six out of seven summer Tests. On this evidence, a bright future remains. He batted with skill and caution in bowler-friendly conditions, though would have been frustrated to feel for one outside off just after tea and edge Hill (three for 22 from 13.4 overs) behind – 209 for eight in the 68th over, a lead of 75.Ben Allison, for 23, was then trapped lbw by Thompson before Hill’s third wicket was that off a swinging Sam Cook caught behind. After Cook removed Adam Lyth early in Yorkshire’s second innings, Bean played with positivity but composure as he indicated easier batting conditions under the Headingley sunshine.Hill also played nicely for 33, though swished his bat in frustration after falling to Jamie Porter three balls before the scheduled close.

Rangers missed out on SPFL titan who’s now worth £6m & better than Propper

da dobrowin: Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement is finally beginning to see the fruits of his labour with regard to how his signings from the summer transfer window are performing.

da wazamba: A rebuild was certainly required at Ibrox, with plenty of high earners being sold or released, while a host of young talents arrived in Glasgow, along with a few experienced players.

With a few months of the season now completed, several players have established themselves as key members of Clement’s squad. Connor Barron, for example, has played in every single match this season so far, shining in the heart of the midfield.

Vaclav Cerny is another who has recently put a couple of bad performances behind him to embark on a wonderful run of form over the previous few weeks.

Vaclav Cerny

Indeed, the Czech winger has scored five goals and grabbed three assists in six games and there is no doubt the 27-year-old has cemented his place in the starting XI.

Others haven’t quite lived up to the hype on their arrival, especially a defender signed back in August…

How much Rangers paid for Robin Propper

One area which Clement needed to bolster during the summer was the Light Blues’ defensive options. Connor Goldson was sold after six years in Glasgow, while Leon Balogun was likely to enter his final season at the club.

This saw the Belgian turn to Europe in order to add some reinforcements to his squad, making a move for FC Twente captain Robin Propper.

The Dutchman had played over 200 times in the Eredivisie throughout his career, so it was clear the 31-year-old was experienced enough to take over from Goldson at the heart of the Gers defence.

Clement didn’t exactly have the biggest budget to play with, yet he managed to secure Propper’s signature for a fee in the region of just £1.5m due to a clause in his contract.

On the surface, it appeared to be a smart piece of business, yet after a few months, the centre-back hasn’t quite performed at his best for the Light Blues.

Robin Propper’s Rangers stats

Since making the move to Rangers, Propper has featured 14 times across all competitions, although he has had to settle for a place on the bench in the club’s last two domestic matches.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

The former Twente captain has started three of their four Europa League ties, although his three starts have seen the club concede five goals, including four at home to Lyon in October.

During those games, Propper has won just 48% of his total duels each match, lost possession on average 9.5 times per game and completed just 80% of his passes.

The defender has committed 1.5 fouls per game too, while being dribbled past on 0.8 occasions each match. Is he struggling with his discipline?

Question marks still surround Propper and his performances of late haven’t exactly convinced the Ibrox faithful that he is the right choice to be the leader in the heart of their defence.

Should the Gers have gone all out for a transfer target in 2023 who is now starring in the Champions League? Rather than wait another year for Goldson’s inevitable decline and having to replace him within a matter of weeks.

Auston Trusty was someone Michael Beale wanted, yet he ended up joining Celtic this summer.

Rangers' pursuit of Auston Trusty

Beale faced a similar conundrum to Clement during his first summer transfer window in charge, as a major rebuild was required at Ibrox.

One area which needed some overhauling was the defence, which led the Englishman to add several targets from down south to his list.

Trusty was one name that appeared quite frequently. In May 2023, the then Arsenal starlet was linked with a move to Ibrox, with the club reportedly even submitting a bid in July to secure his signature.

He ended up joining Sheffield United for the 2023/24 campaign, ensuring he got some first-team football in the Premier League.

It looked like the boat had sailed with regard to signing him during the summer, with Celtic eventually securing a deal for the defender, spending £6m to bring him north of the border.

The move looks like an inspired one, that’s for sure.

How Auston Trusty compares to Propper

Hailed by former teammate George Friend for being “incredible”, Trusty has shone for the Parkhead side during his first few months in Scotland, especially in the Champions League.

The American has played in all four of Celtic’s European games so far this season, as they have recorded two wins, a draw and a solitary defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Across three starts in Europe’s premier club competition, Trusty has succeeded with a staggering 96% of his passes, has been dribbled past just 0.3 times per game, won 4.5 total duels per game – a success rate of 62% – and has also lost possession just 2.3 times per match, showcasing his class on the biggest stage of all.

Compare these stats to Propper’s from the Europa League mentioned earlier, and they are night and day, with Trusty looking like the real deal in Europe.

Signing a competent defender can make all the difference when performing in continental competition.

This is one area in which Clement has struggled, and it is clear the Ibrox side blundered massively by failing to sign Trusty back in 2023.

Of course, the £5m asking price that Arsenal demanded was clearly too much for the club. Instead, they splashed money on players such as Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers and Danilo instead.

It remains to be seen what the Gers will do in the January window, especially as Balogun enters the final six months of his contract. With the midfield improving after every game while Cerny and Nedim Bajrami settle in nicely, might another defender be signed?

If they can land someone similar to Trusty, then the second half of the season may see a change in fortunes, no doubt about that.

Rangers loan star is now worth £20m & better than Bajrami after leaving

Rangers had the chance to sign a former loan star for £5m…

Liverpool star who lost the ball 25x just made himself droppable

da marjack bet: Arne Slot has engineered a dream start to this strange post-Jurgen Klopp world, but one of his minor foibles during the early weeks has proved to be a lack of rotation as Liverpool head coach in the Premier League.

da prosport bet: However, aside from one bitter blemish inflicted at Anfield by Nottingham Forest, Liverpool head into the October international break atop the league table after defeating Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the weekend’s early kick-off.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot-1

It wasn’t quite a Jekyll-and-Hyde performance, but Liverpool failed to turn their sparkling early dominance into a handsome lead, instead shielding from Eagles swoops in the latter stages by holding onto their one-goal advantage, courtesy of a fine finish from Diogo Jota before ten minutes were on the clock.

It was a performance that saw some pleasing rotations. Cody Gakpo, earning his first starting berth of the league campaign, earned the assist after driving forward, riding the crest of some fluid play, and sweeping a cross-box ball into the vicinity of Jota, whose predatory instincts kicked in.

Liverpool celebrate against Crystal Palace

Curtis Jones also replaced Dominik Szoboszlai, whose indefatigable running has perhaps left him unable to play every three days, week in, week out.

Now, this may appear a little brazen, but Slot might find that the win in south London showed to him that even the club’s most super of stars are not nailed on from the outset, and indeed, Trent Alexander-Arnold might just be droppable.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's performance v Palace

Make no mistake, Alexander-Arnold was nowhere near being poor at Selhurst Park, offering some interesting balls forward while standing strong in defensive moments.

Alexander-Arnold has now created 15 big chances in the Premier League this season, more than any other defender, while also proving himself to be a refined defensive presence, by winning three duels, making two tackles and one well-timed clearance against Palace.

However, he didn’t quite look his natural self when on the ball, failing with nine of his ten attempted long balls and ceding possession 25 times.

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

He’s not perfect, but luckily, Liverpool have the perfect foil waiting in the wings. Conor Bradley deserves a shot from the outset sooner rather than later.

Why Trent is now droppable for Slot's side

Might it be that a lack of contractual resolution is weighing Alexander-Arnold down, that Real Madrid’s beckoning call, football’s most tempting of its type, could be affecting his performance, as he keeps an eye helplessly lingering on the Spanish capital?

Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool’s best players. He’s one of Europe’s finest playmakers and one of the Premier League’s foremost presences.

Trent Alexander-Arnold vs Man United

As per FBref, the England international ranks among the top 16% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 4% for assists and the top 1% for shot-creating actions, passes attempted and progressive passes per 90.

Quite simply, he offers something that full-backs otherwise do not.

That said, Bradley’s quite the young buck and has not really been afforded all that much of a chance to showcase his quality under Slot this season, having yet to start in the Premier League.

He was immense last season, bursting onto the scene during a period that saw his senior positional peer lie in recovery from a knee injury. His goal against Chelsea at the end of January is the standout memory, but Bradley proved himself to be a star across numerous performances, hailed for his “superhuman” start to life in Liverpool’s first team by The Redmen TV’s Jack Gill.

This season, he’s played five minutes in the Champions League and has been an unused substitute across the Reds’ past three league fixtures, only entering the fray in the closing stages up to now.

Now, while Alexander-Arnold offers a quality of a singular nature, his Northern Irish teammate is not too shabby in attacking situations himself, ranking among the top 19% of positional peers for goals and shot-creating actions, the top 5% for assists, the top 10% for passes attempted, the top 5% for progressive carries and the top 7% for tackles per 90.

He’s more energetic and driven in his approach, while he is capable of sparking a barnstorming counter as he ploughs down the wing, wreaking confusion and concern for his adversaries.

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

Thus, if Slot chooses to apply it with greater regularity, he could offer Liverpool a more dynamic approach to their play, opening up a different dimension to overlap and deal with that pesky low block – not that Trent’s celestial range of passing isn’t capable of unlocking a stiff defence.

Alexander-Arnold is a tremendous player and one of Liverpool’s very best, but he proved against Palace that he’s not undroppable and that perhaps, in certain situations, the bold move of offering a different kind of outlet might bear the riper fruits.

Klopp wanted to sign "world-class" £85m star but Liverpool got Gravenberch

In hindsight… this all worked out okay.

Sir Dave Brailsford joins ECB high-performance review as Andrew Strauss targets five-year plan

Senior figures from UK Sport, FA and Manchester City also invited to give input

ESPNcricinfo staff25-May-2022

Sir Dave Brailsford has been invited to join the ECB’s high-performance review•Getty Images

Andrew Strauss says that England’s ambition is to become the “best in the world at all formats of the men’s game within the next five years”, after announcing a panel of experts for the ECB’s high-performance review that includes Sir Dave Brailsford, the former head of the British Cycling team that topped the medal tables at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.Writing in a blog post on the ECB’s website, Strauss reiterated his intention to be “bold” in assessing the failings that have left England’s Test team with one victory in 17 matches since March 2021, and with their lowest ICC ranking since 1995. His aim, he added, is to have solid proposals for the game to vote on by September, in order for the restructuring to begin in time for the 2023 season.”Over the past 42 years, England’s Men have been the number one ranked Test team in the world for a total of 12 months, and 50-over number one for 64 months,” Strauss wrote. “In T20 cricket, we have held the top spot for 748 days since the inception of those rankings in 2011.”At the moment, we aren’t top in any format. So we want to set an ambitious and clear goal – to become the best in the world at all formats of the men’s game within the next five years.”It’s extremely ambitious because we’ve never done it before. But why can’t it be achievable? What’s stopping us – and what else could help us get there? That’s what I want our high-performance review to consider.”From within cricket, the ECB’s panel includes Rob Key, England men’s director of cricket, and Durham’s Marcus North, alongside Daryl Mitchell from the PCA and Mo Bobat, the ECB’s performance director. From outside the game, Strauss has also secured the expert input of Kate Baker, director of performance at UK Sport; Simon Timson, Manchester City’s performance director; Dan Ashworth, the former FA director of elite development, and Penny Hughes, the ex-chair of Aston Martin. However, Brailsford – who is currently the director of the professional cycling team Ineos Grenadiers – is arguably the most prominent name on the panel. Strauss has long been an admirer of his “marginal gains” philosophy, and adopted many of those principles on England’s victorious Ashes tour of 2010-11.Brailsford’s reputation within cycling was recently tarnished, however, when his ex-colleague, Dr Richard Freeman – the former doctor at British Cycling and Team Sky – was found by a medical tribunal to have ordered testosterone “knowing or believing” it was to be used to improve the performance of one of the team’s riders.”I wanted to find experts in high performance whatever that field, some who’ve been in the spotlight, others who’ve been in the background generating high-performance programmes or systems,” Strauss added. “Some with cricket knowledge and expertise, others from a wider sporting background. People with different experiences, who have undergone different journeys, but all of whom we can learn from. And people who are all keen to help cricket.”Strauss added that views would also be sought from cricket’s supporters, and that the whole process would have oversight from a group of first-class county chairs. The remit of the review will not, however, take in the international schedule, nor will it tackle the specifics of the domestic calendar until the remodelled structures have been put in place.”I read a lot of speculation about the domestic competition structure. Of course, this is an important part of the picture, but it’s not the only part,” Strauss added. “The review is designed to look at the high-performance system in its entirely, including the England men’s pathway and our high performance set-up.”And let’s be clear – we have no pre-built solution. At this stage the project is only just starting. There are no hidden agendas. I wouldn’t be bothering to carry out a review if I was already sitting here with specific proposals for change.”

Leeds missed out on £54m star in the making just after they signed Augustin

da heads bet: Leeds United fans would have been reasonably pleased with the summer business in through the door, as the Whites did leave it late in the transfer window, but have snapped up some potentially quality new additions.

da leao: Largie Ramazani is now off the mark for his new employers after costing £10m to get into the building from Almeria, with his goal last time out setting the Whites on their way to a confident 2-0 win over Cardiff City, whilst the likes of Manor Solomon, Ao Tanaka and Isaac Schmidt have also looked equally exciting when they have featured.

Largie Ramazani

Away from these signings that managed to just about get over the line, Leeds have also been cursed many a time by deals going awry at the last minute, with the West Yorkshire giants once in the running to sign a top-class striker in the same year in which they ended up doing the dreaded Jean-Kevin Augustin deal…

Augustin's time with Leeds

Leeds must have wished they hadn’t bothered pursuing Augustin when all was said and done, with the French striker proving himself to be a hassle more than a plus for his side.

Joining initially on loan in January 2020, with an obligation to snap him up on a permanent deal for £18m if promotion was secured, the ex-RB Leipzig man ended up just looking largely out of his depth lining up for Marcelo Bielsa’s men, after so much hype had greeted his signing.

In the end, the 27-year-old flop would only make three first-team appearances in total during his brief but damaging stint in England, with zero goals picked up.

Augustin would just return to Leipzig after the initial loan move expired, therefore, despite Leeds stating that they would sign him permanently, as the German club then ended up ordering the Whites to cough up £24m last year after that alleged breach of contract.

Leeds never got to see these skills on display from Augustin at Elland Road, having also had to endure the frustration of missing out on what would have been a centre-forward upgrade later in 2020.

The man Leeds missed out on

Amazingly, Ollie Watkins could well have joined Leeds over Aston Villa during the summer after Augustin had joined on loan, having revealed this fact during a tell-all interview with Sky Sports in 2021:

“There were quite a few [interested],” he revealed. “Leeds were interested in me, but they signed Rodrigo.”

As Watkins stated, Leeds instead plumped for Rodrigo on a £26m deal that summer to bolster their centre-forward ranks, while Watkins moved on to Villa Park for £33m and has never looked back, with an England call-up even coming his way off the back of his outstanding goalscoring exploits in the Premier League.

The £54m star – as per his transfer valuation on Transfermarkt – is now Villa’s top scorer in the Premier League four seasons on the trot, having amassed a mightily impressive 73 goals from 175 games for Unai Emery’s men to date, with three strikes already registered from six games in all competitions this campaign too.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Watkins was even a hero for his nation during the recent Euros tournament this summer, with this beautiful finish right at the death sending England through at the expense of the Netherlands in a finely poised semi-final match-up.

In another reality, Leeds could well have played a part in the “spectacular” – as he was labelled by football journalist Ryan Adsett this year – ace’s rise to stardom.

But, the pull of Villa, with Dean Smith as manager who took the 26-year-old under his wing at Brentford, swayed the move in that direction.

Ultimately, the Whites messed up, with the Augustin saga leaving a real sour taste in the mouth, even more so now with the development that Watkins could have been signed in the same year as that shambolic move.

Leeds will just pray they have learnt from their errors, with the signings of Ramazani and others this summer hopefully success stories, over going down as costly flops as well.

Sold for £7m: Leeds played a blinder with star who's now worth just £800k

The Whites seemingly cashed in on the centre-forward at the perfect time.
