– Eu dizia, tá perto o gol do homem, tá perto o gol do homem. O alambrado balança, o estádio balança. Caiu o alambrado. O Brasil balança. Na cobrança do escanteio Ronaldo, o Fenômeno, o eterno Fernômeno – Luciano do Valle, TV Bandeirantes

– Senhoras e senhores, o Fernômeno voltou! Gol do Corinthians!

Liverpool waiting for Real Madrid to put £206,000-a-week star up for sale

da jogodeouro: Liverpool are interested in completing the signing of a "special" Champions League winner this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Liverpool transfer news

da supremo: Reds supporters have understandably grown a little frustrated at the lack of transfer activity at Anfield this summer, with no new players coming in to date. Granted, Arne Slot has inherited a formidable squad from Jurgen Klopp, but that's not to say that fresh faces aren't also required.

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has emerged as the main target currently, with Liverpool seemingly pushing hard to get a deal over the line for Spain's Euro 2024 winner. For now, the La Liga club are holding firm, but the hope is that things change, allowing the Merseysiders to complete a significant signing in the middle of the park.

Away from Zubimendi-related news, the Reds are also believed to be interested in snapping up Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Marmadashvili, who could be viewed as Alisson's natural successor between the sticks. The former is keen on a move to Liverpool, but he could be loaned out initially, in order to remain first-choice somewhere.

Elsewhere, highly-rated young Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is thought to be on Slot's radar, despite only moving to Selhurst Park from Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window. He looks like a player with huge potential, so the idea of Liverpool acquiring his signature is mouthwatering.

Liverpool keen on signing "special" Real Madrid star

Now, according to reports in Spain, Liverpool remain interested in signing Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo this summer, having been linked with him in the past.

The report states that if the Reds get a sniff of the Brazilian wanting to depart the Spanish capital or being put up for sale then they will be there to try and snap him up, but will face competition from Manchester City.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

It goes without saying that Rodrygo would be a spectacular signing for Liverpool, considering he is arguably one of the leading wide attacking players in world football at the moment.

The Brazil international often plays second fiddle to Vinicius Junior at Madrid, who earns more headlines, but he is a superb footballer in his own right, scoring 15 goals in La Liga and the Champions League combined last season, clinching glory in both competitions in the process. Meanwhile, the £206,000-a-week winger has been lauded by manager Carlo Ancelotti.

ByTom Cunningham Aug 10, 2024

While Liverpool feel well-stocked in attack currently, the chance to sign Rodrygo should never be ignored, and he could even be seen as the eventual heir to Mohamed Salah on the right-hand side of the attack. At just 23, there is so much more to come, too.

Elgar: 'Playing in our backyard gives us the upper hand'

“Their strength at the moment lies in their bowling. We are extremely aware of that as well”

Annesha Ghosh24-Dec-2021

“We know they’re going to come out firing; we’re extremely mindful of that as well” – Dean Elgar on what he expects from India•Associated Press

South Africa captain Dean Elgar believes his side holds the edge in the upcoming three Tests against India by dint of playing on home conditions, even though they are “wary” of how well India have fared in overseas conditions recently to be the No. 1-ranked Test team in the world.”I think it’s pretty even-stevens. Us playing at home, obviously, gives us a little bit of an upper hand,” Elgar said two days out from the Boxing Day Test in Centurion. “They are ranked No. 1 in the world; we can’t not look at that. That’s something they have been for quite some time, in my opinion – just my being a cricket watcher and a cricket fan.”You can’t not give them the credit for what they have done over the last while. So, I am not going to sit here and say they are not the best side in the world because there’s a ranking system for a reason. But the mere fact that we’re playing in our backyard gives us still the upper hand going into the series.”Related

KL Rahul hints India may stick to five-bowler strategy

India’s 2-1 Test series victory on Australian shores earlier this year was key to propelling them into the inaugural World Test Championship final, where they finished runners-up to New Zealand. Hot on the heels of the title clash came the assignment against hosts England, which India dictated with a 2-1 scoreline before concerns around Covid-19 reduced the five-match Test assignment to four, with the fifth fixture postponed until 2022.On both tours India’s bowling attack, their pace contingent in particular, underpinned the majority of their dominance. With them expected to stick to their five-bowler make-up in South Africa, Elgar admitted the visitors’ attack posed the home team the most potent challenge in conditions typically conducive to speed, movement, and carry.”Their strength at the moment lies in their bowling,” Elgar said. “We are extremely aware of that as well. They’ve had a lot of successes as a bowling unit. They’ve got a lot of older spearhead bowlers that lead the attack and have got a good back-up set of bowlers as well.”And being in South Africa, I’m pretty sure their bowling attack will exploit the conditions reasonably well. Just knowing that we have our seamers and we’ve got a little bit of pace and bounce and the wickets may be do a little bit more in South Africa than it does anywhere else around the world.”Despite their triumphant showings in overseas conditions in the recent past, with their resurgence in the longest format having its roots in their victory in Johannesburg four years ago in a 1-2 loss to South Africa, that India are yet to clinch a Test series in the country could, Elgar said, enthuse Virat Kohli’s team to go for the jugular.”It (India having success in Australia and England) is something we’re obviously wary of. They’ve improved a lot with regards to their travelling record,” Elgar said, “I know Virat Kohli has emphasised on that kind of point – that they wanted to improve their record on the road. [We are] Extremely mindful of that; they have set themselves that standard. And I’m sure they’re going to try and fulfill it within this series.”And as much as I have the power of being the leader of this team, I’m going to try and prevent them from fulfilling that role or that dream of theirs. That makes an exciting and challenging series coming up for both teams. We know they’re going to come out firing; we’re extremely mindful of that as well. I’m pretty sure they know we’re also going to come out firing. Either way it’s going to be an extremely exciting Test series.”

Ravi Shastri signs off as India head coach an 'emotional, but a very proud man'

Out-going mentor labels his side “one of the great cricket teams in the history of the game”

Matt Roller08-Nov-20213:34

Were Kohli-Shastri tactically adept for T20Is?

Ravi Shastri signed off from his four-and-a-half-year tenure as India’s men’s head coach as an “emotional, but a very proud man”, labelling his side “one of the great cricket teams in the history of the game” and underlining the toll that non-stop touring in biosecure conditions had taken on him and his players.Since his appointment in 2017 and the extension of his contract two years later, Shastri has overseen back-to-back Test series wins in Australia and his side will return to England with a 2-1 lead in July 2022. They have enjoyed sustained success in bilateral white-ball cricket but their stretch without winning an ICC event extended to eight years after exits at the semi-final and Super 12s stages of the 50-over World Cup in 2019 and the T20 World Cup in 2021 respectively.”The quality of cricket this team has played over the last five years across all formats, the performances are there for everyone to see,” Shastri said in his press conference. “When you perform in that fashion, when you go across the globe, across all formats and beat teams, then you know you’re part of one great cricket team.Watch cricket live on ESPN+

“I’m not saying a great cricket team, India – I’m saying one of the great cricket teams in the history of the game, because if you look at those kind of performances, they don’t happen often. You’ve got to have a bunch of players who are fit, hungry, fearless, have the quality, have the belief, and then to stay fit so that you can play those five years together and go across the globe and perform everywhere.”If you want the real highlights, nothing beats Australia, England, we’re up in the series, it’ll be longest time will be up in the series till next year [sic]. I might be commentating on that game, for all you know, but I’ll keep that one. It feels good. But white-ball, everywhere: we beat West Indies in the West Indies, we’ve beaten Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka – good teams. All round, it’s been fabulous.”Ravi Shastri gestures to the crowd as Bharat Arun looks on•ICC via Getty Images

India were eliminated at the Super 12s stage of this World Cup after back-to-back defeats in Dubai in their first two games against Pakistan and New Zealand. While Shastri admitted that they “lacked daring”, he suggested that the result of the toss had been crucial throughout their campaign, and said that he wished players had been afforded a longer break between the end of the IPL and the start of the tournament.”We are disappointed with the result in the first two games here,” he said. “I’m not here to make any sort of excuses. We lacked the daring in the second game against New Zealand. I know the toss was important and as you’ve seen in the last three games how important it is, and I do feel it’ll continue to be important – though not as much now as the weather has cooled down a bit, but still. It’s something for the boys to learn and they’ll get an opportunity again next year. It’s not often you have [two] World Cups in 12 months, so hopefully, they’ll go and kick some butt there.”The cricket itinerary is so packed that you can do only one thing at a time. At least they played some T20 cricket in the IPL – I just wish that the gap was a little more. That’s not my job, it was already done. That’s something I’m sure the administrators, not just from India [or] from BCCI, but from others around the globe who will also be looking at it – before big tournaments, to ensure that there is a little bit of a gap so that the guys are mentally fresh and ready to play.”India’s multi-format players have been in biosecure environments since their arrival in England in June ahead of the World Test Championship final, and Shastri said that while a culture of “trust” meant that players would be free to take breaks from the game when they needed to, it was vital to remember that they are “human”.Related

Rohit 'ready in the wings' to take over India T20I captaincy

“We actively worked towards it: we wanted trust in that dressing room,” he said. “That’s the only way you can get each other’s backs. We needed communication, we needed no finger-pointing at each other, we needed the word ‘I’ to be thrown into the dustbin, and the word ‘we’ coming in. We created a culture that had to be obeyed and followed with Virat [Kohli] leading the way.”One thing I would say – this is not an excuse, this is a fact – when you’re six months in a bubble, there are a lot of players in this team who played all three formats of the game. I don’t care who you are, if your name is Bradman, if you’re in a bubble as well, your average will come down, because you’re human. This is not something where you just put petrol in the backside and then expect the guy to move on in overdrive. It doesn’t happen that way. They’ve shown the drive to hang in there, no complaints, but sooner or later, the bubble will burst so you’ve got to be careful.”It’s one of the great sides to have played cricket at the highest level in the history of the game when you look all round. Let’s not take anything away from that. For me, to be part of that journey with the boys and for the boys to respond and raise the bar in that fashion leaves you going from the dressing room emotional, but a very proud man.”

Rangers could ditch Dessers in swoop for £3m star who ‘wants the move’

da imperador bet: After a summer that was framed as a rebuild of the squad by those in power at Glasgow Rangers, the first game of the new season could easily have been slotted in as one of the matches from the 2023/24 campaign.

da 888: The starting XI in the 0-0 draw with Hearts on Saturday featured just one player – Connor Barron – who was not at Ibrox during the second half of last term.

Philippe Clement's side scored eight goals fewer than the eventual champions in the Scottish Premiership last season and their lack of threat at the top end of the pitch cost them once again.

The Ibrox giants only created 0.9 xG worth of chances throughout the match and squandered the few opportunities that they were able to create.

As you can see in the table above, Cyriel Dessers was a particularly poor performer against the Jam Tarts, with two 'big chances' missed and zero chances created for his teammates.

Clement could finally ditch the Nigerian dud by swooping to sign one of the players from the opposition's team before the end of the summer transfer window.

Premiership star wants Rangers move

Pundit Chris Sutton, who was on Sky Sports' coverage of the game on Saturday, claimed that he has heard that Lawrence Shankland "wants the move" to Ibrox, as relayed by RangersNews.

The former Celtic striker described the Scotland international as a "ruthless" finisher who could come in as an upgrade on the club's current forward line options, including Danilo and Dessers.

Shankland did not find the back of the net against the Gers, with zero 'big chances' created for him, but did win 12 of his 17 duels to showcase his physical attributes.

Last month, the Daily Record reported that Clement is weighing up a swoop to sign the Hearts captain this summer to bolster his playing squad.

The outlet claimed that the Belgian boss was concerned about his ability to play in a high-pressing side but his goalscoring prowess could tempt him into a move.

It was stated that Sam Lammers' move to FC Twente has provided the club with enough funds to make an offer for Shankland, who they hope would be available for a fee of £3m.

Signing the Scottish centre-forward would finally allow the manager to ditch Dessers from his starting role, which has not been justified by his performances on the pitch.

Cyriel Dessers' struggles in front of goal

The former Cremonese attacker missed two 'big chances' in the 0-0 draw with Hearts on Saturday and his performance was not a surprise to anyone who watched the striker in action during the 2023/24 campaign.

Dessers did score 16 goals in 35 matches in the Premiership last term, which is a respectable return on paper, but his finishing left a lot to be desired.

As you can see in the table above, the 29-year-old flop spurned a staggering 27 'big chances' in the Scottish top-flight, which was 18 more than any other player in the squad missed.

This shows that Dessers is a wasteful finisher who does not make the most of the opportunities that his teammates are able to create for him on a consistent basis, which was on display again against Hearts on Saturday.

Rangers are vying to win a league title and secure trophies in the cup competitions, which is why they need a reliable marksman who can step up in the big moments and be consistent in front of goal.

Dessers and Shankland

Dessers' form last season and his performance against the Jam Tarts on the opening day suggests that he is not the reliable number nine who is likely to win the Gers the league with his finishing quality.

This is why Clement must dip into the market to land Shankland, who seemingly wants the move, before the summer transfer window slams shut at the end of the month, as he could come in as a far better option than Dessers.

What Lawrence Shankland could offer Rangers

Firstly, Shankland is a throwback number nine who can hold the ball up, win flick-ons, and cause constant problems for defenders from a physical perspective.

The 28-year-old star won 71% of his duels against Rangers and won 3.9 duels per game in the Premiership last term. Whereas, Dessers lost 67% of his duels in the division last season and only won 2.3 duels per match on average.

This suggests that the Hearts marksman could come in and immediately offer more than the Nigerian striker out of possession as a target man for the side.

Alongside his physical attributes, Shankland is also a lethal, and 'ruthless' as per Sutton, goalscorer who has been a reliable threat in the final third throughout his career.

The right-footed ace has scored 206 goals in 418 matches throughout his club career to date and his scoring prowess was on full display in the Premiership last season.

As you can see in the table above, Shankland racked up a hugely impressive tally of 24 goals in 37 league appearances, and only missed nine 'big chances'.

This means that he scored eight more goals than Dessers despite missing 18 fewer 'big chances' than the Rangers man, which perfectly illustrates the gulf in quality between the pair when it comes to scoring goals.

The Hearts captain's performances also earned him the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award, which essentially means that the Light Blues would be adding one of the best players, if not the best, in the division to their squad by signing him.

West Ham keen on £10m star who’d be deadly with Kudus

da stake casino: After their 9th place finish last campaign under David Moyes, the Hammers will be keen to fight their way back into the European places, having finished eight points off of 7th and therefore a spot in the UEFA Conference League.

One key factor for West Ham will be extra recruitment in the forward areas, to offer support to Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus, two of their best performers last season.

West Ham transfer news

According to a report from Record, as relayed by Sport Witness, West Ham are one of the main sides showing interest in Vitoria Guimaraes winger Jota Silva, as their chairman Antonio Miguel Cardoso awaits a concrete proposal to arrive, in order for them to negotiate his departure.

The report claims it is 'practically inevitable' he will leave Vitoria this summer, and the window for him is open, with the 24-year-old said to have already received several approaches through his representatives.

Silva, whose price tag is said to be up to €12m (£10m), made 42 appearances in all competitions last campaign for Vitoria, scoring 15 goals, providing seven assists, and totaling 3,456 minutes of football.

Silva and Kudus' potential partnership

Kudus made 45 appearances in all competitions for West Ham last season, scoring 14 goals, providing six assists, and totaling 3,511 minutes of football.

Silva, who was dubbed a "standout" by analyst Ben Mattinson, is a right-footed winger, whilst Kudus is a left-footer, and both could provide a similar output and dynamic, but from opposite ends of the pitch.

West Ham are in need of a right-footed winger for that left-hand side, as Kudus, Bowen, and Paqueta are all left-footed operators.

As you can instantly tell, both players are best known for being goal-scoring wingers. Posting 0.36 Non-Penalty Goals per 90, putting them in the top 16% of attacking midfielders/wingers in the Men's Big 5 leagues and European competitions over the last 365 days.

Kudus has always been known as a high-volume shooting player, so for Silva to better him in this metric, taking 3.08 shots per 90, this shows both players aren't afraid to take a shot, and this explains their goalscoring with their shot-heavy tendencies.

To take this one step further, Silva gets 1.17 of his 3.08 shots per 90 on target, whilst Kudus only gets 0.72 of his 2.44 average shots per 90 on target. This gives Silva a 37.9% Shots on target percentage, whilst Kudus is only at 29.5%.

However, where Silva seems to be more efficient with his shooting, Kudus does better him as a ball carrier and 1v1 threat, completing 2+ more successful take-ons per 90, as well as 3.99 progressive carries per 90, compared to Silva's 2.72 per 90.

West Ham considering £40m bid for "special" star who wants to complete move

The forward has been dropping hints…

ByTom Cunningham Jul 27, 2024

By adding another efficient shooter outwide, who can bring goals to the side, Kudus could be more "free" to play as a progressive carrier, continue to threaten in transition with his speed and power, and also continue to add goals of his own, as he did so well last season, which is why they could be a deadly pairing.

Sam Northeast signs three-year Glamorgan deal

England Lions batter fell out with Hampshire during summer before loan spells with Yorkshire and Notts

Sam Northeast has signed a three-year contract with Glamorgan, completing the 31-year-old batter’s protracted departure from Hampshire.Northeast signed a new contract with Hampshire at the start of the season but fell out with the club’s management and subsequently embarked on loan spells with Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire as part of efforts to find a new county. Chances were limited, however, and he only managed one half-century in six innings (five first-class, one T20) between July and September.Described by Mark Wallace, Glamorgan’s director of cricket, as “one of the very best players in the county game”, Northeast’s arrival represents something of a coup. Glamorgan finished bottom of Division Two in the County Championship, winning just two four-day fixtures all season, but did claim their first silverware since 2004 by winning the Royal London Cup.”Sam is one of the very best players in the county game and when we found out he was available we did everything we could to bring him to Wales,” Wallace said. “Signing Sam is fantastic news for everyone associated the club and to attract a player of his quality is a good sign of the direction the club is heading in.”He has a terrific record across all three formats and his versatility means he can bat in a number of different positions, while his experience will bring a lot to the changing room and help develop our younger players.”Northeast has been one of the most consistent run-scorers in county cricket since coming through with Kent more than a decade ago, although full England honours have continued to elude him. He was made club captain at Kent in 2015 before moving to Hampshire ahead of the 2018 season in an attempt to press his international ambitions. At Hampshire, Northeast collected a Royal London Cup winner’s medal, as well as captaining the club for extended periods during 2019 and 2020 in the absence of James Vince. He scored six first-class hundreds, averaging 36.92, but has been unable to add to a handful of Lions appearances made on the 2017-18 tour of the Caribbean.”I’m extremely excited for the challenge ahead at Glamorgan,” he said. “Next year is the perfect time to build on the Royal London Cup success the club achieved this summer.”I still have a lot of ambition in the game and I believe Glamorgan share that with me. Speaking to Mark Wallace and Matt Maynard, I knew this was the right place for me to commit my future to. I am really looking forward to the next few years and the success we can have on the cricket pitch.”
