Pakistan's return to training hits bio-security snag

Medical experts say they need more time to finalise safety protocols against Covid-19

Pakistan’s plans to bring its cricketers out of lockdown and back to training next week has hit a snag with more time needed to prepare a bio-secure environment to ensure player safety.Players and team management had already been briefed by the PCB’s medical panel about training under a controlled environment. The plan was to bring 25 to 30 athletes to the NCA in Lahore, where they would stay and train in pairs from early June onwards. Next, they would move across the road to Gaddafi stadium for a three-week camp that would include training in larger groups. Finally, those picked for the England tour would fly over in early July. The problem, however, is that the NCA’s lodging facilities currently have only 21 rooms available, where as many as 40 are needed to implement proper social distancing. Additionally, no one will be allowed to enter or leave the premises. The PCB remain hopeful of making it work and could look into splitting the camp between two venues. Another issue will be that some of the coaching staff are outside the country, such as bowling coach Waqar Younis is based in Australia and physiotherapist Cliffe Deacon, in South Africa. The selection committee has finalised a list of probables for the camp but will only admit those who test negative for Covid-19.The PCB is yet to reach out to the provincial and federal governments for support. But the board did come up with the return-to-training ground rules with help from various medical experts and guidelines put forward by the World Health Organisation.Dr Sohail Saleem, head of PCB medical panel, has been in touch with the ECB to confirm Standard Operating Procedures on how to run camps in these unprecedented circumstances. The ICC’s guidelines have also been incorporated into these plans, a final draft of which will be submitted to the ICC for review. All sport in the country has been on hold since March, and most of the cricketers were last active in the PSL. There have been reports of a few centrally contracted players going for nets but the PCB is believed to be unaware of those developments. There are currently 76,106 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Pakistan and cases are on the rise. Restrictions in the country are starting to ease with Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday announcing the reopening of many businesses and industries, including tourism. However, all contact sports, indoor sports clubs, indoor gyms, indoor sports facilities; sporting tournaments/matches (indoors and outdoors) remain shut. In case the government refuses to allow any sporting activity in the country, then the PCB is likely to request a special permission to ensure the England tour goes ahead.

O’Neil ditches Ait-Nouri in predicted Wolves lineup vs Burnley

da fazobetai: Wolverhampton Wanderers failed to bounce back from their FA Cup quarter-final defeat a few weeks ago as they played Aston Villa on the weekend.

da 888: With every point crucial in their bid to secure a top-half Premier League finish, the Old Gold suffered a 2-0 defeat which hinders their recent progress.

Of course, Gary O’Neil has suffered his fair share of injury blows recently, with Matheus Cunha, Pedro Neto and Hwang Hee-Chan all missing from his frontline, while centre-back Craig Dawson has been a big absence from his defence.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil celebrates a Premier League win.

They have a chance to redeem themselves following the weekend loss, hosting Burnley in the top flight on Tuesday evening.

Several players could come back into the side ahead of the clash, but O’Neil will likely just make a couple of changes to his starting XI.

With this in mind, here's a look at the 11 players who could be unleashed in the lineup against Vincent Kompany’s men on Tuesday, where three important points are at stake.

1 GK – Jose Sa

Jose Sa

The Portuguese shot-stopper will make his 13th consecutive Premier League appearance against Burnley, hoping to keep just his fifth clean sheet of the season.

He last failed to concede a goal in the top flight during a 1-0 win over Sheffield United back in February and O’Neil will be hoping this changes on Tuesday evening.

2 CB – Santiago Bueno

Dawson suffered an injury against Fulham at the start of March and has been ruled out since, breaking up O’Neil’s regular three-man defence.

The groin injury meant Dawson has missed the previous three matches. There won't be a need to rush him back against Burnley, meaning Bueno will keep his place in the lineup.

He didn’t have the best of games against Villa, winning just two of his six contested duels, but he did complete 90% of his passes along with taking 56 touches during the match, and he will be raring to go against Burnley.

3 CB – Max Kilman

Max Kilman

The Wolves captain received his sixth top flight booking of the season against Villa on the weekend, while he won zero ground duels, but the defender finished with a 90% pass success rate while dominating aerially, winning four of his six aerial duels.

He will remain in the side, hoping to recover from a below-par outing to shine against Burnley tomorrow.

4 CB – Toti Gomes

Toti

The Portuguese centre-back is perhaps one of the most improved players in the squad. Last season, he made only 17 appearances in the league. This season? Toti has already featured 26 times, impressing under O’Neil.

Against Villa, he won seven of his 11 ground duels, showcasing his brute strength in one-on-one battles, and he will be hoping to shine once again on Tuesday.

5 RM – Nelson Semedo

The former Barcelona defender has been used in a more advanced role recently, but this has yet to pay off. Across 28 Premier League games this season, Semedo has registered just one assist.

During the game against Villa, he delivered just one accurate cross from four attempts and made one key pass, hardly the stats of a player who O’Neil trusted to contribute to going forward.

With a lack of options available to him, Semedo will start against Burnley.

6 CM – Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle

The on-loan Manchester City gem has impressed in spells for Wolves. Due to his current injury woes, O’Neil has given him more opportunities, with the youngster starting the previous three league matches.

With Neto and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde missing tomorrow’s clash, Doyle will retain his spot in the starting XI.

7 CM – Joao Gomes

Wolves have a diamond in their side with the talented young Brazilian, who won his first cap for his country during the recent international break.

A 92% pass success rate against Villa indicated that he controlled proceedings from the heart of the midfield, while winning 12 of his 19 total duels shows he was keen on getting involved in the dirty work throughout the contest.

O’Neil will once again unleash him in the middle of the pitch alongside Doyle, with the hope that the pair can cause some damage.

8 LM – Hugo Bueno

Against Villa, Rayan Ait-Nouri completed just 13 passes and took 33 touches, failing to really get involved during the match, which could see O’Neil unleash Bueno in the starting XI.

The youngster has yet to start a Premier League match in 2024, but the tie against Burnley could be the perfect opportunity for him to finally play 90 minutes in the top flight.

9 AM – Pablo Sarabia

The Spanish veteran has been in solid form throughout the 2023/24 campaign, making 22 appearances in the league, scoring three goals, and grabbing six assists in the process.

O’Neil has tended to utilise his skills as an attacking midfielder recently due to injuries, which is a position that Sarabia will keep against Burnley.

The 19th-placed side in the division have conceded 65 goals so far this term, suggesting Sarabia may have an ideal chance to add to his tally.

10 AM – Mario Lemina

Lemina has been used as an attacking midfielder recently, adapting well to the change. During the Villa match, he took three shots throughout the game while succeeding with two of his three dribble attempts.

He missed a big chance along with making one key pass and there is no doubt the more advanced role suits his game.

Glamorgan stalwart Peter Walker dies aged 84

Allrounder played three Tests for England in 1960, winning all of them

Former Glamorgan and England allrounder Peter Walker has died aged 84 following a stroke.A dependable option with bat and ball, Walker’s standout attribute was his close catching: he managed 697 catches over the course of his first-class career, including a club-record 656 for Glamorgan, with the vast majority at either slip or short leg.Partly educated in South Africa, Walker spent two years in the merchant navy before starting to play first-class cricket, making his debut in 1956. He passed the 1000-run mark in 11 separate seasons as an attacking middle-order batsman, and after starting out as a left-arm swing bowler, he developed into a left-arm orthodox spinner towards the end of his career. He made his Test debut aged 24, making 9 and 37 in a win against South Africa at Edgbaston, and added his only half-century at Lord’s two weeks later. But three games – and three wins – into his England career, he was left out and was never called upon again. Alongside Martin Saggers and Toby Roland-Jones, he is one of three men to have played three Tests or more in his England career while maintaining a 100% win record in the post-war era.He was a key part of the Glamorgan side that went undefeated in the 1969 County Championship season, which culminated in the club’s second title, and retired in 1972 to further his broadcasting career with the BBC, where he was the face of Sunday League coverage for several years. He went on to become an administrator, and was a driving force behind the creation of the National Cricket Centre for Wales at Sophia Gardens. In 2010, he was awarded an MBE for services to cricket, primarily for his role at the centre. He later had a short stint as Glamorgan president, starting his tenure in March 2009 but resigning in November 2010 following the sacking of Jamie Dalrymple as captain and the departure of Matthew Maynard as coach.Glamorgan chairman Gareth Williams said: “Everyone at Glamorgan is saddened to hear this news. Peter was a club legend, a man who gave everything he could to the club he loved while playing, and later in an off-field capacity. He gave so much back to the game, in particular through his work with Cricket Wales and the National Cricket Centre, and through his outstanding service as President of Glamorgan.”Hugh Morris, the club’s chief executive, said: “A combination of world-class catching ability, aggressive batting and accurate spin made him a triple threat and a brilliant allrounder. He helped Glamorgan to win a County Championship title and represented England, making him a true legend of the club.”We may never see another player quite like him, and he will be missed by everyone at the club. Our thoughts go out to his family, and his friends.”

Arsenal eyeing £35m move to sign "incredible" star ahead of Liverpool

da 888casino: Whilst the majority of their focus will undoubtedly be on the Premier League title race with just eight games to go, reports suggest that Arsenal also have one eye on the summer transfer window and landing a player who is likely to be a champion himself come May.

Arsenal transfer news

da 888casino: The only guarantee of the Premier League title race seems to be that it's destined to go down to the final kick to create one of the most intense finishes to a campaign in recent history. After suffering heartbreak against a dominant Manchester City side last season, Arsenal are now on course to fall victim to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool farewell tour, but just one bad result for the Merseysiders could change that.

Arsenal's "unstoppable" 7/10 titan was even better than Smith Rowe vs Luton

The brilliant ace won nine duels on the night.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 4, 2024

Away from the action, with or without silverware, Arsenal have set their sights on improvements this summer. Reports have mainly been centred around strikers with that killer instinct Gabriel Jesus so desperately lacks, with Viktor Gyokeres among those linked with a move to The Emirates. There's no doubt that he would add that clinical nature in front of goal after an incredible season at Sporting CP.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

It's not just strikers being linked, however. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Arsenal are eyeing a move to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen alongside Liverpool and Manchester United this summer following the right-back's impressive campaign.

Available for just £35m due to his release clause, Arsenal would be getting a player that clubs chiefs reportedly believe is a "bargain" this summer and giving current right-back Ben White plenty to think about in North London, despite his solid season. Frimpong, of course, has played a vital part in Xabi Alonso's unbeaten Leverkusen side and is on course to finally dethrone Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, only adding to the reasons why he's attracting the likes of Arsenal ahead of this summer.

"Incredible" Frimpong would add elements White lacks

Whilst there's little doubt about White's defensive ability, some questions can be asked about his capabilities going forward. After all, it's easy to forget that he is a centre-back by trade due to the incredible job he's done on the flank so far this season. But then the question should come the way of Frimpong. Is the Leverkusen man good enough defensively to step into Mikel Arteta's system and away from a back five in Germany? There's truly only one way to find out, though Frimpong's stats compared to White's still paint quite the picture.

Frimpong's rise has been coming for some time too, with former Celtic boss Neil Lennon previously singing his praises. He said via the official Bundesliga website: "I've never seen a better kid than him. The quality of his play, the pace of his play, the end product. His fitness levels are incredible, I think that the fans have really taken to him."

Conmebol fala em 'perfeição' do Flamengo na Libertadores e destaca feitos históricos

2011 Aston Villa sale would be worth more than Watkins in 2024 money

da esoccer bet: Aston Villa are currently competing to secure Champions League football for the 2024/25 campaign as they sit fourth in the Premier League table.

da betsson: The Villans are three points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, who have one game in hand over Unai Emery's men, with nine games left to play before the end of the season.

Qualifying for Europe's premier cup competition could help the club to retain their best players, as they would be able to offer Champions League and Premier League football.

Unai Emery

The likes of Douglas Luiz and Ollie Watkins could, therefore, be convinced to stay, unlike when they sold Jack Grealish to Manchester City for a whopping £100m.

Villa have had to sell many stars in the past but they have not always lived to regret their decision, as was the case with the sale of Stewart Downing, who went on to flop after his exit from Birmingham.

If you adjust for the inflation of transfer fees in football over the years, the 2011 Villans whiz was sold for more than Watkins is currently valued at.

Ollie Watkins' current market valuation

At the time of writing (22/03/2024), FootballTransfers has his Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at €50m (£43m), which is more than the £33m deal they agreed with Brentford to sign him in the summer of 2020.

The English forward hit the ground running in the Premier League with a return of 14 goals and five assists in 37 top-flight matches during the 2020/21 campaign.

Watkins went on to hit double figures for goals – 11 and 15 – each of the following two seasons in the league, and is currently enjoying his best year in front of goal in claret and blue.

As you can see in the table above, the 28-year-old star has already hit 16 goals for the season in the Premier League, which is the highest of his career so far with nine games left to play, to go along with ten assists.

Watkins has scored those 16 goals from an xG (Expected Goals) of 14.43, which shows that the England international has been an above-average finisher given the quality of chances that have come his way.

The former Brentford whiz has racked up 22 goals and ten assists in 41 appearances in all competitions for the Villans, including six goals in eight Europa Conference League games.

These statistics show that the Villa forward has been a consistent and reliable threat for Emery at the top end of the pitch, with his ability to constantly cause problems for opposition defences as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a centre-forward position.

It now remains to be seen whether or not any clubs will want to swoop in to sign the impressive attacker during the upcoming summer transfer window, and if the Villans will be able to keep hold of him should any teams come knocking.

Back in the summer of 2011, Villa did cash in on one of their star players for a significant fee – worth more in 2024 money than Watkins is now – when they sold Stewart Downing to Liverpool.

How much Liverpool paid for Stewart Downing in 2024 money

The Premier League giants – per Totally Money – paid £20.5m to sign the left-footed wizard from the Villans ahead of the 2011/12 campaign.

As per Totally Money's index, that £20.5m would be worth a staggering £54.5m in 2024 money when you adjust for the inflation of transfer fees over the subsequent years – £11.5m more than the £43m Watkins is currently valued at.

Liverpool made their move to sign Downing after he enjoyed two seasons at Villa Park, after his move to the club from Middlesbrough in 2009.

He had an underwhelming debut campaign with the Villans with a return of just two goals and one assist in 25 Premier League appearances during the 2009/10 season.

As you can see in the table above, the English magician stepped up his game in his second year with the club as he showcased his ability to score and assist goals from a wide position.

Downing won the club's Player of the Season award for his efforts that term and manager Alex McLeish stated that he – and the club – did not want to sell the forward in the summer of 2011, after the Villans had rejected a £15m bid from the Reds.

However, Liverpool were eventually able to secure his services for a fee of £20.5m – £54.5m in today's market – and it turned out that Villa struck gold with that deal, as he went on to struggle at Anfield.

Stewart Downing's post-Villa struggles

McLeish and Aston Villa may look back on the decision to sell Downing when they did as a blinder as his form post-2011 for the Reds suggests that they hit the jackpot by selling when they did.

After his return of 14 goal contributions in 38 Premier League matches – one every other game on average – during the 2010/11 campaign, Liverpool may have expected a similar output on Merseyside.

Instead, the left winger – staggeringly – did not contribute with a single goal or assist during his first league season with Liverpool. He made 36 appearances and started 28 times for Liverpool but ended the term with zero goals and zero assists.

Stewart Downing

That was followed by three goals and five assists in 29 league outings for the Reds throughout the 2012/13 campaign, which took his tally to three goals and five assists in 65 top-flight appearances.

Liverpool then decided to cut their losses on the big-money flop as they sold him to West Ham United in the summer of 2013 – two years on from his move from Villa.

Per Totally Money, the Hammers paid £5.2m to sign Downing from the Reds, and that fee would be worth £9.5m in the current day, which is significantly less than the £54.5m his initial move to Anfield would have been worth in 2024.

This shows that the Villans struck gold in the summer of 2011 as they cashed in on the winger before his form on the pitch and value off it plummeted.
