Stuart Cain is set to be named as Warwickshire’s new chief executive.ESPNcricinfo understands that Cain will be appointed later this week with a remit to further diversify the business of the club. He is currently chief executive at Wasps Holdings, which includes management of the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, and is believed to have prevailed from a shortlist that also included Craig Flindall, Warwickshire’s current chief operating officer.Steve Elworthy, who is currently spearheading the ECB’s plans to play cricket behind closed doors this summer and was previously tournament director of the 2019 World Cup, is also understood to have held preliminary discussions with the club before deciding the role was not the right fit for him at this stage.Cain’s to-do list is likely to include the acquisition of a naming-rights partner for Edgbaston and a move towards becoming a venue for concerts and other large events. He will also be charged with overseeing the next phase of the ground’s redevelopment which is currently scheduled to include a hotel where the Priory and Raglan stands are situated. It may be relevant that Cain has an established relationship with local government agencies having spent seven years as managing director of the NEC Group. In that time, he built The Ticket Factory into one of the UK’s leading entertainment ticketing agents. Birmingham City Council remains Warwickshire’s lending partner.ALSO READ: Snowball to leave Warwickshire for ECB roleWarwickshire’s current chief executive, Neil Snowball, is scheduled to leave the club at the end of June having been appointed as the ECB’s managing director of county cricket. Snowball joined Warwickshire in late 2015 and is widely credited with improving the club’s relationship with the ECB culminating in an excellent allocation of major matches. He leaves the club in fine fettle, despite the long-term debt issues, having also presided over strong ticket sales in international cricket, an increase in the non-cricket business – notably weddings and conferences – and stronger links with the club’s history and former players.Cain has strong links to the area. He attended Wolverhampton Grammar School before going on to study at Birmingham City University and then gaining an MBA from Lancaster University. He has also completed executive education at Harvard Business School. He is currently unclear whether he will continue as a senior independent director for the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. He lives with his wife and three daughters in Staffordshire.

Umar Akmal suspended under PCB's anti-corruption code

Anwar Ali called up as replacement at Quetta Gladiators

Umar Akmal has been suspended by the PCB with immediate effect under Article 4.7.1 of its anti-corruption code, disallowing him from taking part in any cricket-related activity under the board’s purview “pending the investigation being carried out by PCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit”.A PCB statement announced the development, but didn’t reveal anything about the nature of the offence or the duration of the suspension.First up, though, it will mean that Akmal will not be a part of Quetta Gladiators’ title defence at the PSL, which starts on Thursday against Islamabad United. In his place, Quetta have turned to 32-year-old allrounder Anwar Ali, who links up with the team as a Silver Category player. Ali, who turned out in 22 ODIs and 16 T20Is for Pakistan between 2008 and 2016, was a part of the Quetta squad in all the previous editions of the PSL, and has 191 runs and 23 wickets in 32 appearances.Akmal, 29, was in the news most recently for his alleged misbehaviour with a staff member after a failed fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, which the PCB later put down to a “misunderstanding” following an inquiry. The two-day investigation looked into the incident in which Akmal, during the skin-fold test, was believed to have exposed himself in front of the trainer and asked: “Where is the fat?”Akmal faced no sanction, only a reminder of his responsibilities, with a PCB statement saying that he had “offered his regrets” to the PCB for his action, and was in turn reprimanded and “reminded him of his responsibilities as a senior cricketer”.

Arsenal "monster" has just made himself as undroppable as Rice & Raya

da poker: The banter years may be no more at Arsenal Football Club but the fact they were forced to contest the first penalty shoot-out in the Champions League since 2016 was just typical.

da fezbet: The Gunners never do things the easy way and that was seen at the Emirates Stadium on a dramatic Tuesday night.

Mikel Arteta's men had conceded a late goal in Portugal a fortnight ago, meaning they headed into the second clash 1-0 down. Fortunately, one all was said and done, that didn't matter.

Leandro Trossard's superb opener on the night could and should have given the hosts control but after 210 minutes of football across the two ties they couldn't be separated. Step forward David Raya, the man of the hour or hours.

David Raya's performance vs Porto in numbers

At the beginning of the season, Arteta admitted that he was delighted to have two such excellent goalkeepers at his disposal. "We have to use them" he barked, hinting that a real battle could play out between Raya and Aaron Ramsdale for a starting spot.

The latter began the campaign as the no.1 but since the first international break of 2023/24, it is the Brentford loanee who has been preferred. Initially, he looked edgy, perhaps not quite comfortable with the demands of playing for Arsenal.

Why had Arteta disrupted things in such a crucial position? No one really had the answer. Well, in 2024 the critics have been hammered away with vigorous force. If anyone still had doubt regarding who should be Arsenal's 'keeper moving forward their 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over Porto should squash those once and for all.

Raya made two crucial saves and could have saved a third as the north Londoners made it through to the last eight of the competition where a whole host of European heavyweights sit in store.

The Spaniard's display was arguably about more than just his heroics in the shoot-out, making three saves during normal time and succeeding with 100% of his run-outs. That was as well as boasting plenty of influence in possession with the goalkeeper's 54 completed passes only two fewer than skipper Martin Odegaard and more than Kai Havertz.

Another one of the heroes on the night was Declan Rice. Of course it was.

The £105m summer signing stepped forward comfortably to net a penalty having been everywhere during the 120 minutes. He won five duels, completed 84% of his passes and even if none of his corners came off, was mightily impressive.

The two players in question have both marked yet more superb pieces of business by Arteta and Co but there is another rather underrated signing who deserves just as much praise; Jakub Kiwior.

Jakub Kiwior's game vs Porto in numbers

Raya and Rice have both quickly cemented themselves as undroppable figures in this Arsenal team but Poland international, Kiwior, has had to bide his time for a fair share of playing time.

Signed rather unexpectedly in a £20m deal from Serie A side Spezia in the winter of 2023, the defender only played in seven matches in the Premier League last season.

However, with Oleksandr Zinchenko enduring a period of time on the treatment table in the opening stages of 2024 Kiwior has finally got his chance for regular minutes, albeit in an unfamiliar position.

A central defender by trade, the 24-year-old has been forced to play as a left-back which to begin with wasn't met with great success. Having struggled in an inverted role in the 4-3 win over Luton, eventually hooked just after the hour mark, it looked as though we wouldn't be seeing much more of him.

Though, since that moment Arteta has tweaked things. Kiwior doesn't step inside like Zinchenko but operates as more of a typical full-back. Indeed, with four goal involvements in his last six domestic games, he's still more than making an impact on proceedings.

No such attacking contribution was made in the win over Porto in midweek but as analyst Ben Mattinson suggests, he was a "monster" on the night defensively.

Handed an 8/10 match rating by The Standard's Dan Kilpatrick, the reporter described it as the defender's "best performance for the club."

It's certainly hard to dispute that, even if he did only complete 73% of his passes and ceded possession on 12 occasions. That said, he won 100% of his aerial battles and his one and only dribble.

Perhaps his finest moment came late in the second half to deny what would have been a certain goal, only for the offside flag to intervene. After Raya was forced into parrying a shot the ball sat up perfectly for Evanilson to find the net from close range, only for Kiwior to use his body as a shield and prevent an effort on goal.

It was a moment that summed up his gladiatorial display in the Champions League on Tuesday. He was eventually sacrificed for Zinchenko for the second period of extra time but it spoke volumes that he lasted that long.

The left-back position is now the former Spezia man's to lose. Alongside fellow 2023 signings Rice and Raya, he is surely undroppable for the time being. A start against Manchester City at the end of the month would be truly deserved.

Jonathan Wells, Peter Siddle take Strikers closer to playoffs

Despite a late flourish from Peter Handscomb, Melbourne Stars fell short of their 163 target

The Report by Tristan Lavalette22-Jan-2020Adelaide Strikers’ bowling firepower stymied league leaders Melbourne Stars at the Adelaide Oval to help the team inch closer to an invaluable double chance in the playoffs.Chasing a seemingly modest 163, the Stars struggled against a Peter Siddle-led bowling attack until a late flurry from acting captain Peter Handscomb (65 from 39 balls) provided some hope before falling short.Jonathan Wells led the Strikers’ batting effort with a half-century•Getty Images

The Stars had appeared in control with the ball with their spinners menacing after Handscomb won the toss and elected to bowl. Only a late flourish from Jonathan Wells ensured the Strikers mustered a competitive total. The Stars (10-3) have already secured the minor premiership, while the Strikers (7-4) are equal on points with second-placed Sydney Sixers.Spinners shackle StrikersThe pitch looked a batting paradise, but the Strikers got off to a slow start scoring just seven off the first two overs with Jake Weatherald notably struggling. Knowing they could ill-afford to waste more overs in the Powerplay, Phillip Salt switched gears and hit four consecutive fours in the third over off Dan Worrall with sweet blows around the wicket.Glenn Maxwell, who relinquished the captaincy for the game due to the bereavement of a friend, bowled Salt in the fifth over and promptly kissed his black arm band before pointing to the sky in an emotional tribute.Handscomb successfully rotated the bowlers in the Powerplay, including using Adam Zampa who continued his strong form after bowling well in India. The Strikers crawled to just 1 for 38 after six overs with Weatherald making a painstaking six off 17 balls. The Strikers looked to Travis Head for a push, but the spinners continued to menace with Clint Hinchliffe bowling the left-hander then dismissing an out of sorts Weatherald, who only mustered 15 off 27.Sandeep Lamichhane became the fourth spinner used inside 10 overs with the home side limping to 3 for 57 at the midpoint.Wells counterattacks at the deathThe Strikers could ill afford to meander in the middle overs and fortunately Alex Carey, making his BBL re-emergence, was in an aggressive mood. He clubbed the first six of the innings in the 11th over off Zampa and added two more shortly after to quickly transform the game.Carey’s enterprising knock ended prematurely when he holed out off Hinchliffe, who was outperforming his higher-profile teammates. Spin was working such a treat that Handscomb turned to Nic Maddinson in the backend instead of seamer Marcus Stoinis, who was not required in the innings. After 11 straight overs of spin, Worrall returned in the 18th over and maintained the miserly effort of the spinners with accurate full-pitched death bowling. The Strikers finally broke the shackles with a late flurry off Zampa, whose figures soured after a tight start to finish with 0 for 38 off 4.Wells crossed fifty in the final over to ensure the Strikers finished with momentum.Stars crawl in the Powerplay The Strikers needed early wickets and Siddle in the second over landed the prized scalp of Stoinis, whose skier was well caught by Salt. The Stars were forced to rejig their batting order due to an injury to Hilton Cartwright before the match and were out of sync managing just 12 runs in the opening fours overs in their slowest ever start in the BBL.With the Stars anchored, Head used talisman Rashid Khan to end the Powerplay and the spin maestro delivered second ball by clean bowling Maddinson. The Stars’ tally of 26 runs was their second lowest ever Powerplay and they slumped further shortly after when Nick Larkin holed out in Wes Agar’s first over. The pressure was on Maxwell and he started nervously with his first boundary narrowly missing the stumps off an inside edge before finding his range against Agar in the 10th over. But Maxwell’s cameo ended when he hit straight to mid-off, as the Stars’ run rate crept over 10 an over at the midpoint.Siddle holds off Handscomb’s late rally Handscomb and Seb Gotch stabilised the innings with cautious batting but boundaries were hard to muster. Gotch fell trying to accelerate in the 15th over putting the pressure firmly on Handscomb’s shoulders.Rashid wasn’t taking wickets but continued to tie down the scoring in the middle overs to ensure the Stars’ run-rate spiralled out of control. Handscomb could barely score above a run a ball until unleashing several lusty blows late to cross fifty and give the Stars a sniff of a miracle.Needing 22 off the final over, the Stars fell short with Siddle holding his nerve against a hot Handscomb.

Daniel Farke and Leeds can now sign Newcastle player for free this summer

da wazamba: While Daniel Farke was able to bring right-back Connor Roberts to Leeds United on the final day of the January transfer window, he wasn't able to secure the centre-half signing he had sought.

da betsul: Farke wanted a reunion with Ben Godfrey, who left his Norwich side join Everton, but the Whites saw a loan offer for the Englishman rejected even though the Toffees were supposedly open to letting him go.

Daniel Farke and Ben Godfrey

Another of the players the Championship promotion-chasers looked at was Harry Souttar of rivals Leicester City. They considered a last-gap move for the 25-year-old, but ultimately no deal materialised.

Then there was Paul Dummett at Newcastle United, seen as somebody who ticked the key boxes for Farke. Both Leeds and fellow high-flyers Ipswich Town pursued him before the deadline, to no avail. Now, though, they've been given fresh hope of signing the Welshman.

Dummett set to be available as a free agent

According to journalist Joel Bland, Leeds target Dummett will be leaving Newcastle at the end of the season, having been with the Magpies since he was a youth player.

Bland says that "sources close to the player" have affirmed that Newcastle won't offer him a further contract extension after keeping him on for the 2023/24 season on reduced terms.

"Outstanding" Dummett display makes transfer case

As you'd probably expect of a 32-year-old on a one-year deal, Dummett has hardly featured for Eddie Howe's side this season. He received late run-outs in the FA Cup victory over Sunderland and the 4-1 Premier League triumph over Chelsea, but his only starts have come against Manchester City and Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

It was a big ask for Dummett to come in and deliver against the side that won the treble last season, but he impressively rose to the occasion, helping Newcastle keep a clean sheet in a memorable 1-0 win. The veteran got through plenty of work in the backline but was also safe and precise in possession throughout.

Reporter shares exciting Leeds transfer update for Daniel Farke

It could be a very big summer if the Whites achieve promotion.

ByDavid Comerford Feb 27, 2024

Howe said of his performance: "I thought Paul was absolutely outstanding. When you see him behind the scenes every day, his commitment to Newcastle, the professionalism that he shows, his standards have been exemplary since I’ve been here. That’s why I was so determined to keep him in the summer – and he can still play an important role on the pitch.

"He’s got real experience and a really good defensive mindset. I thought him and Jamaal [Lascelles], the pair of them, were really, really good for us and I’m delighted that we showed that strength in our back line because it’s going to be hugely important this season."

Dummett will believe this performance showed that he had much more to give in his career, and Leeds could do much worse than recruiting him as a savvy squad player for the 2024/25 campaign.
