Brathwaite, Hetmyer put West Indies in command

Riding on Kraigg Brathwaite’s second successive century, West Indies went to stumps at 295 for 4, having accumulated runs at 4.85 per over in the post-tea session

The Report by Mohammad Isam12-Jul-2018
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKraigg Brathwaite’s second consecutive century helped West Indies establish early dominance on the opening day’s play in Kingston. West Indies went to stumps comfortably-placed at 295 for 4, having accumulated runs at 4.85 per over in the post-tea session: a significant jump from 2.25 and 2.83 in the first two sessions respectively.Brathwaite added 109 for the fourth wicket with Shimron Hetmyer, which came on the back of a 79-run third-wicket stand with Shai Hope, and 50 runs for the second wicket with Kieran Powell. Hetmyer, who had added 48 for the unbroken fifth-wicket stand with Roston Chase, remained unbeaten on 84 off 98 balls – his second Test fifty. But the day truly belonged to Brathwaite, who once again stood out for his tenacity. He was equally cautious against left-arm spin, orthodox offspin and pace, without showing any weakness or liking for a particular bowler. Brathwaite nullified Bangladesh’s first long spell of spin through the second session, doggedly defending anything outside his stumps, even as the ball zipped around. He collected the bulk of his runs on the on-side, with the singles and twos behind the square region a common occurrence. Six of his nine fours also came on the on-side as Bangladesh did well to restrict him from driving freely. But given his boundless patience, Brathwaite still looked at ease. He also ran hard between the wickets, picking up three threes.Having benefited from Bangladesh’s failure to take a review when he was rapped on the pad on 98, Brathwaite went on to pass Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Darren Bravo as he faced 250-plus deliveries in an innings for the sixth time in his career. He fell late in the day, trying to hit Mehidy for a second successive boundary through midwicket, only to find Taijul swiftly moving at short midwicket to complete the catch. By then, however, he had neutralised Bangladesh’s early thrust as they unleashed their spinners in the morning.Despite the pace and bounce on offer, Shakib went in with three spinners – as opposed to West Indies, who dropped their only specialist spinner – and used them immediately to good effect. Opening the bowling himself, Shakib and Mehidy created plenty of chances in the first hour, taking advantage of the big turn available outside the line of the stumps. They kept the close-in fielders busy with half-chances, and Devon Smith’s inside-edge, off Mehidy’s slightly leg-sidish delivery, resulted in a simple catch to Mominul Haque at short leg.No. 3 Kieran Powell tried to break the shackles, but when Mehidy noticed his inclination to hang back to full deliveries, the offspinner’s patience paid off when he was trapped leg-before to a similar delivery for 29. But Brathwaite’s single-mindedness in defence slowly offset Bangladesh’s early advantage. He reached his fifty in the second session, taking 149 balls to get there. He added 79 runs for the third wicket with Shai Hope, who struck two fours in his 29 off 79 balls. Hope then inside-edged Taijul Islam on to his pads, the ball lobbing up towards silly point for wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan to complete a diving catch. In Brathwaite’s presence, West Indies picked up pace in the final session. He took Taijul Islam for three fours before blasting Kamrul Islam Rabbi past point. Three overs after Brathwaite reached his century, Hetmyer sliced one past the slips for four to raise his fifty.More boundaries followed during the Hetmyer-Chase stand. Chase tucked Mehidy past fine-leg and through the covers for his first two fours, while Hetmyer struck the day’s first six, in the 90th over, over long-off. The shift in gears summed up West Indies’ progress from being severely tested against spin at the start of the day, to batting quite freely by the end of it.

Professional Cricketers' Association 'must remember to look after players', warns founder Fred Rumsey

The founder of the Professional Cricketers’ Association has urged the organisation to “remember what they are there to do”.Fred Rumsey, who set up the PCA (the players’ union) in 1967, has reminded the current management that their only concern should be “representing the interests of players”.He is particularly disappointed at the prospect of an eight-team competition, which will exclude the involvement of more than half of current PCA members, and is concerned the association may be powerless to prevent the new, 100-ball-a-side competition, which he dismisses as such a “ludicrous” idea it “should be played in clowns’ clothing”.”They’ll probably dismiss my views as those of an old fogey,” Rumsey, the former England seamer, told ESPNcricinfo. “But the PCA was founded to represent players. Not to devise new formats or even to look at the overall health of the game. Other bodies do those things. The PCA was founded to represent players.”Yet now we’re going to have an eight-team competition that will mean most current PCA members won’t have any involvement. How can that be in their interests?”And then we learn there is to be a ludicrous new competition – this 100-ball nonsense that sounds as if was the idea of Fred Karno [credited as the inventor of slapstick comedy] – and the PCA were hardly even consulted before it was unveiled. Well, that doesn’t sound to me as if they are taken very seriously by the ECB. It doesn’t sound as if they have much of a voice. There is no reason at all the players couldn’t have been consulted months ago.”Rumsey, now aged 82 but as sharp as ever mentally (he is currently putting the finishing touches to an autobiography), concedes he is not party to the what happens behind the scenes at the PCA these days and says he was “encouraged” by Daryl Mitchell’s veiled warning to the ECB that they had “no competition without players”.But he urged the PCA management to stick to their guns and ensure they continue to “look after the interests of players”.”Mitchell was quite right to remind the ECB that they don’t have a competition without players,” Rumsey said. “But I wonder if a split has emerged in the PCA? Are the players, represented by Daryl, supported as much as they should be by the commercial side of the organisation? I’m not at all convinced they are.”I know the PCA still do much good work but my concern, on this issue, is whether they are doing enough to look after the interests of players. I wonder if former players – who are not under contract and do not fear the consequences of their words – should now get together and form an association to ensure the players have a powerful voice once more?”The PCA declined to comment but pointed out they continue to work hard, sometimes in private, in the best interests of their members.

Malcolm Waller pulls out of Zimbabwe's ODI squad

Correspondence between the batsman’s lawyer and Zimbabwe Cricket has cited labour-practice concerns as the reason for his withdrawal

Liam Brickhill15-Jul-2018

International Cricket Council

Zimbabwe batsman Malcolm Waller has withdrawn from the team’s ODI squad citing, through correspondence between his lawyer and Zimbabwe Cricket, labour-practice concerns. Waller had been part of Zimbabwe’s squad for the T20 tri-series in Harare, playing in Zimbabwe’s last two games against Australia and Pakistan, and was also named in the squad for the ODIs against Pakistan. While Waller had not responded to a request for comment at the time of writing, ZC confirmed his withdrawal and correspondence with his lawyer.Waller’s departure strikes another blow to Zimbabwe’s already depleted reserves, taking the number of former regulars missing from the side to eight. Injuries have ruled Kyle Jarvis and Solomon Mire out from the ongoing matches against Pakistan, while five other players – including Brendan Taylor and former captain Graeme Cremer – are “unavailable” according to Zimbabwe’s convenor of selectors Walter Chawaguta.Sikandar Raza was the only one of the “unavailable” players to take part in the final rounds of the domestic Logan Cup competition in April and May, and has been the only one to have secured any game time elsewhere, turning out for the Montreal Tigers in Global T20 Canada.News of Waller’s frustrated departure comes soon after it emerged that the Pakistan team touring Zimbabwe had to delay plans to travel from Harare to Bulawayo ahead of the first ODI on Friday because their accommodation had not been booked.ZC has been in financial crisis for some time now, having had to postpone domestic tournaments and struggled to pay players and employees. A report by ICC’s senior events operations manager Simon Jelowitz after the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in March also mentioned that “throughout the tournament a number of casual staff, mainly net bowlers, were complaining that they were either not receiving money or being underpaid and as a result threatened to withdraw their resources,” according to a story in the local media.Jelowitz’ critical report notwithstanding, ZC does at least have the promise of some help from the ICC now, though that is dependent on ZC’s continued compliance with an agreed operational plan. The ICC’s help has not been able to stem the player exodus at ZC, however, leaving the team increasingly shorn of experience.

Two-divisional Championship promotes 'short-termism' – Wasim Khan

Leicestershire’s chief executive has provided the clearest hint yet that the days of promotion and relegation in the County Championship could be coming to an end

George Dobell19-May-2018

Wasim Khan, Leicestershire’s chief executive, has provided the clearest hint yet that the days of promotion and relegation in the County Championship could be coming to an end. While Wasim, chairman of the working party looking into the future shape of domestic cricket, was at pains to say no decisions had yet been made, he makes no secret of his fear that two divisions “promotes short-termism” and feels the county season starts too early to encourage good quality cricket.Wasim, who also feels counties should be better rewarded for producing England-qualified players and that it should be made “very difficult” for counties to include non-qualified players in their teams, hopes to make his recommendations to the ECB’s cricket committee in October.Any changes will, if approved, be introduced for the 2020 season. If promotion and relegation is abandoned, it is likely to lead to the introduction of a conference system. As Wasim also sits on the ECB’s cricket committee and is involved on the working party that is drawing up the new County Partnership Agreements (which replace the old Memorandums of Understanding), his views are likely to prove highly influential.”Does promotion and relegation promote the right behaviours? Does it promote short-termism? Yes it does. That’s the unintended consequence,” Wasim said.”We’ve seen examples of that in terms of players being brought in to support promotion and relegation. We’re a prime example: at Leicestershire we’ve lost players in the past as they felt they had to go and play Division One cricket.”If our fundamental aim is to bring those two mountains together – county cricket and successful England teams – then we’ve got to take a bit more of a long-term view.”How can we encourage all of us to make more long-term decisions as counties? And is the current two-divisional structure helping us do that? If it is, then great. But the evidence would suggest we have to look at it and perhaps in some areas that it doesn’t.”Wasim’s working party – a group that includes England cricket director Andrew Strauss, Glamorgan chief executive Hugh Morris, Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon and Ashley Giles, director of sport at Warwickshire – met for the first time last week. It would have been premature to “jump into solution mode”, according to Wasim, so instead they discussed the process by which they will come to their decisions and “evaluation criteria for each of the four areas” they were asked to review. Those four areas are: the two-divisional structure; what gets played during the six-week window earmarked for The Hundred; the volume of T20 Blast games to be played during the county season; and the role of the minor counties. Over the next few weeks, the working party will split into two sub-groups to devise pros and cons for all possibilities and meet again, as a whole, on June 28.While it is clearly too early to predict their final decisions, Wasim makes no secret of his own desire to reintroduce the minor counties to the main List A competition as a method of spreading the reach of the game.”We’ve 39 cricketing counties in this country, not 18, and we know the numbers around participation have begun to dwindle in some areas,” he said. “There’s a lot we need to do to keep competing with other sports.”So, if you have Surrey turning up to play at Wiltshire, it is a game that is going to attract 3000 or 4000 people. Or Leicestershire playing at Dorset. Those games can then be used as a catalyst to get more young people enthused about the game. It’s about spreading the game far and wide. So the initial thinking involving the minor counties is certainty something we’re really want to do in some way, shape or form.”He is also open-minded about the possibility of counties starting the season abroad – playing either first-class or List A cricket.”If you asked most people, April is still too early to play county cricket,” he said. “So it’s about trying to find the optimal time to play it. Where you give an opportunity to bat for a long time on good wickets.”Can we play two games [abroad], for example. There’s been talk mooted in the past of playing white-ball cricket abroad. A lot of teams go on pre-season overseas tours and there’s a lot of expense. All these things will need to be looked at.”One thing that appears almost certain to remain the same is the number of T20 Blast matches played by each county. Certainly Wasim is very keen that there is no reduction to the current number of seven games hosted by each county, nor the Friday night (or weekend) scheduling.”We’re all massively pushing for it to stay in place because it’s so important for us,” Wasim said. “The Blast is critical. We don’t want to reduce the short format to just the eight venues, we want to excite kids to come to watch cricket here. We want to say to schools: here are some free tickets, come and watch your heroes locally. The Blast plays a critical role, not just in terms of sustaining the counties but for the player pipeline point of view as well.”We’ve been very clear from the outset: seven home games is critical for what we’re trying to do here.”Wasim also suggested counties may need to be better incentivised to pick England-qualified players and that, over the coming weeks, spectators will be asked for their views over the domestic structure.”One thing that has come out loud and clear is about incentivising the counties more around playing and promoting more English-qualified players,” Wasim said. “Ideally to support England and the future of English cricket we clearly need a strong county game with more county players exposed to playing county cricket who are qualified to play for England.”The strong consensus across the counties was we should make it beyond doubt that it should be a very difficult thing for us not to play English qualified players.”And yes, we’re definitely looking at canvasing the views of spectators. We’re looking at setting up an email address. We’ll encourage people to send their views in. A lot of good people watch cricket and have for a long time. Let’s get their views on what they think would work.”

Can India stop New Zealand's home juggernaut in high-scoring Hamilton?

The hosts have won each of their last 13 home ODIs, and each of their last five meetings with India

Himanshu Agrawal26-Nov-20223:08

Jaffer: India might be tempted to go with Kuldeep in place of Chahal

Big picture
With 16 matches, New Zealand have played the second-fewest ODIs of any team in the ongoing World Cup Super League. But just one more win, and they can topple India from the top of the table. Given that they’ve won each of their last 13 ODIs at home, the odds would favour them to do just that.Having seemingly moved on from Trent Boult and Martin Guptill, the hosts seem to have built a solid foundation as they build towards the 2023 World Cup. Michael Bracewell isn’t a guaranteed starter despite his stellar recent form, and even injury to James Neesham couldn’t prevent them from beating India comfortably in the series-opener in Auckland.Their quartet of fast bowlers offer both pace and movement, while Neesham, Bracewell and Mitchell Santner complete a trio of allrounders. Batting depth might be New Zealand’s one major concern, given that they can’t accommodate all their allrounders, and that Tim Southee’s returns with the bat have faded of late.India, meanwhile, are still in search of a sixth bowling option. None of the top six batters who played in Auckland bowl, and with no Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel in their squad for this series, they also have a lack of experience in the lower middle order. They could look to address the sixth-bowler issue by bringing Deepak Hooda into their line-up, but that would leave them with the dilemma of who to leave out. They have the luxury of experimenting, however, since they have automatically qualified as hosts of next year’s World Cup. But they still have a series to win, which would need them, first and foremost, to win on Sunday and end a five-match losing streak against New Zealand.Form guide
New Zealand: WLLLW
India: LWWLWIn the spotlight
Kane Williamson has played just seven ODIs since the 2019 World Cup, with five of them coming this year. A troublesome elbow and the Covid-19 pandemic combined to limit his participation in the format, and his seven innings in this time have brought only one 50-plus score. That came at Eden Park on Friday, when he selflessly kept giving the dangerous Tom Latham the strike, and eventually ended up six short of a century. With less than a year left for the World Cup, New Zealand will not only hope their captain puts his fitness worries behind him and features more regularly in ODIs, but also that he makes big scores as often as he used to.Yuzvendra Chahal has been the third-highest wicket-taker among spinners from Full-Member teams in ODIs this year, with 21 wickets at an average of 27.09. But he’s not had a great time of it in recent weeks. Having spent the entire T20 World Cup on the bench, Chahal returned to action on this tour of New Zealand, where he has taken a bit of stick: he went for 35 in three overs in the tied third T20I, and began this ODI series with a wicketless 10 overs that went for 66 runs. With intense competition in the spin department ahead of the 2023 World Cup, Chahal will need a swift return to his best to remain among India’s first-choice options.India’s top order can look forward to good batting conditions judging by the trend of high-scoring games at Seddon Park•Getty Images

Team news
New Zealand were forced to leave Neesham out in Auckland due to a niggle. If he returns, they might have a difficult choice to make. While they will welcome the extra batting depth he offers if he replaces one of the four specialist quicks, they might need him to bowl his full ten-over quota, with Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips having been used very sparingly of late.New Zealand (probable): 1 Finn Allen, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Tom Latham (wk), 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 James Neesham, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Matt Henry, 11 Lockie FergusonThere is a chance India might bring in Hooda as a sixth bowling option, but this could force them to leave out Suryakumar Yadav, who hasn’t yet replicated his T20I success in ODIs. He was the only member of India’s top seven to be dismissed for a single-digit score in Auckland, and his last seven ODI innings have brought him a highest score of just 27. India’s three fast bowlers were all expensive in Auckland, so there is a chance that Deepak Chahar could replace one of them.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Suryakumar Yadav/Deepak Hooda, 6 Sanju Samson, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Shardul Thakur/Deepak Chahar, 9 Umran Malik, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalPitch and conditions
Seddon Park in Hamilton has hosted only three ODIs since 2020, with two of them producing first-innings scores in excess of 330. India scored 347 in one of them, only for New Zealand to hunt it down comfortably thanks to a Ross Taylor century. Expect another high-scoring game come Sunday. There remains a good chance of rain interrupting play, however, with showers forecast throughout the afternoon and evening.Stats and trivia
India posted contrasting totals of 92 in 2019 and 347 in 2020 while batting first in their last two ODIs at Seddon Park, and lost both matches. Tim Southee got to 200 ODI wickets while taking 3 for 73 in the first ODI, and two more wickets will take him past Chris Harris and into third place among New Zealand’s highest ODI wicket-takers. Since Dhawan’s ODI debut, only three batters have scored at least 6000 runs at a 90-plus strike rate. Dhawan’s strike rate is second on that list, sandwiched between those of his team-mates Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.Quotes
“You can catch up, and give yourself more time. It’s 50 overs… you’ve got that time up your sleeve to get the innings going and play your innings.”
