Irfan Pathan makes his case for No. 7

It is clear that Irfan is a better batsman than Ravindra Jadeja, at least at No. 7. It should be a no-brainer that Irfan should be preferred because his bowling is likely to be more effective than Jadeja’s

Sidharth Monga in Sydney24-Feb-2012Irfan Pathan, still on a comeback trail, has said that his reworked action, in which he delivers from a higher arm position, has helped him find his areas better, and made him a better bowler. He also feels he is in a peaceful mental state, not worrying too much about selection or results, and just staying happy.”What I wanted to do in this [Australia] trip is, make myself a circle, where I am happy no matter what happens,” Irfan said. “Even if I play, don’t play, do well, don’t do well. I have realised that there are certain things that are important in life. I am trying to stay in that circle.”That doesn’t mean Irfan has not been working hard. It has taken him four to five months to get his action right, he said. “When I came in 2003, I had a natural action in which I used to twist,” Irfan said. “When you are 19 and when you are 27, it’s different. My action went wrong because of the twist. I kept going even more round-arm, side-on. That hurt me because I couldn’t bowl in the right areas. The speed went out too and the swing was coming out of the hand.”When I went to Sekhar sir [TA Sekhar, the head coach at MRF Pace Academy in Chennai], I worked on my action. It took me four-five months to change it to feel what I am feeling now. It’s a long and slow process. When I worked with him in 2007, I started with just walking for a week. It took a month just to get a feel of it. Then it took four-five months in the change of action.”Irfan is happy with the swing he is getting, the accuracy and the variations. “Working with Eric Simons [India’s former bowling coach] has also helped me,” he said. “Getting help and getting the basics right is helping me bowl the yorkers and different variations. I am trying to get better. Sometimes the results happen, sometimes they don’t. Obviously you need the help of the right people at the right time, which I have been lucky to get.”In his three ODIs in this tri-series, Irfan has bowled 29 overs for 153 runs and six wickets. He has opened the bowling, bowled first-change and has also been used at the death. It is, however, his batting that has provided a curious study of India’s selections. It is clear to everybody that Irfan is a better batsman than Ravindra Jadeja, at least at the No. 7 position, which usually needs bigger, cleaner strikes in the final few overs. It should be a no-brainer that Irfan should be preferred because wherever his bowling might be, it is likely to be more effective than Jadeja’s. In fact Jadeja, always chosen ahead of Irfan, has bowled only 42.4 overs in six matches so far, for one wicket. In one of the earlier press conferences, when asked to explain his choice of playing too many spinners in Australian conditions, MS Dhoni said he was handcuffed by the absence of a fast-bowling allrounder. It is easy, in this atmosphere of mistrust, to look at this as a case of favouritism, but when pressed Dhoni said Irfan was his fast-bowling allrounder, but he didn’t want to play him as soon as he had arrived in Australia. When Irfan did play, he was sent in at No. 9, where he hit a crucial six in a tie. Irfan took that sportingly. “You have to be realistic,” he said. “What you have done in the past is totally in the past. You have to look at the current scenario. Ashwin has batted really well. He has a Test hundred and batted well in Australia. You want to get higher, but have to be realistic too.”

Does Irfan think he is ready to take – at least in Australia – the No. 7 spot, a position that has exchanged hands between Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan recently with no clear winner. “When you are not thinking about results, it comes,” Irfan said. “Even for my short-term plans, [do] not think too much ahead, [do] not think too much back, stay in that circle [of happiness].”

The message, though, had been drilled home. In India’s previous game, Irfan was promoted to No. 6, and scored 47 off 34 with hardly an undue risk taken. “In the last game, I got a hint that they would send me to use the Powerplay,” Irfan said. “I am ready to bat wherever the team demands. It is not an issue for me. In terms of bowling as well, I am willing to bowl whenever they want me to, with the new ball or the old ball. As long as I am playing, I am happy.”How does Irfan see himself? Does he himself think he is that fast-bowling allrounder? “I think I am a bowler who can bat,” Irfan said. “If you look at me in the nets, I always make sure I give equal importance to both aspects. When I am bowling, I make sure I bowl length at the start, use variations and try to finish it with death-overs bowling and variations.”Same in batting. I pad up and wait for my turn and make sure when I finish my batting with regular bowlers, I try to do some extra throwing with the coaches, and bat some extra. Even in a match, when I bowl I am a bowler, and when I am batting, I try to think as a batsman. Unfortunately in the last match, I wanted to stay till the last, but the result didn’t go our way.”The best thing for me would be to take wickets. When I keep taking wickets, it helps my batting. And vice-versa. When I look at myself, I feel it’s 60-40 – 60, bowler, and 40, batsman. But when I bat, I like to think as a batsman.”Does Irfan think he is ready to take – at least in Australia – the No. 7 spot, a position that has exchanged hands between Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan recently with no clear winner. “When you are not thinking about results, it comes,” Irfan said. “Even for my short-term plans, [do] not think too much ahead, [do] not think too much back, stay in that circle [of happiness].”Edited by Abhishek Purohit

Barcelona player ratings vs Espanyol: Dani Olmo at the double and Lamine Yamal plays big once again as La Liga leaders enjoy derby delight

Two clinical finishes from the summer signing led the Blaugrana to victory as Raphinha also got on the scoresheet once again

A sublime first-half attacking display was enough to give Barcelona all three points in their derby-day clash with Espanyol. Goals from Dani Olmo either side of a Raphinha chip put the Liga leaders out of sight of their rivals, who were torn apart as Sunday's game resulted in a 3-1 victory for Hansi Flick's side.

Barca were untouchable in the opening spell and it took just 12 minutes for their magic to tell. Lamine Yamal split the Espanyol defence open with the outside of his boot to find Olmo, whose first-time finish flashed past Joan Garcia to put the hosts ahead.

Eleven minutes later, Marc Casado lifted a pass over the Espanyol defence to find the onrushing Raphinha, who was brave to beat Garcia to the ball and lift it over the stricken goalkeeper. Olmo then added his second, and Barcelona’s third, with an effort from distance to wrap up the three points.

Espanyol had the ball in the back of the Barcelona net four times as balls in behind the defence were a constant threat. The Barcelona high-line twice caught the visitors millimetres offside, but were taught their lesson on the third occasion as Javi Puado snatched a goal back.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Inaki Pena (6/10):

A strong save from Puado was all Pena had to do on a quiet day for the goalkeeper, as he could do little for the Espanyol goal.

    Hector Fort (7/10):

The young right-back got stuck into a number of challenges and offered a threat going forward. A tad fortunate with a goal

    Inigo Martinez (6/10):

A solid day at the back but struggled at times with the high defensive line.

    Pau Cubarsi (7/10):

Another strong display, with an impressive goal-saving challenge on Kral early in the second half the stand out moment.

    Alejandro Balde (5/10):

Lost Puado at the back post for the Espanyol goal and was caught out on a number of times with balls in behind.

    Midfield

    Marc Casado (8/10):

Dictated the game from the heart of midfield and threw himself into every challenge. Dominated the Espanyol midfield before substituted on the hour mark.

    Pedri (7/10):

The midfielder did not put a foot wrong and slowed the tempo of the game in the second half when it was needed.

    Dani Olmo (9/10):

The Spain international's runs between the lines were too much for the Espanyol midfield and defence to handle. Took his goals well with two fine finishes from close-range and distance.

    Attack

    Lamine Yamal (8/10):

The 17-year-old continues to dazzle and assisted the opener with a superb outside-of-the-boot pass to Olmo. Ran poor Carlos Romero ragged.

    Robert Lewandowki (6/10):

Not his best game, but an industrious performance from the veteran forward who worked hard to allow his fellow attackers to shine.

    Raphinha (7/10):

Another game and another goal for the Brazilian who worked tirelessly off the ball. His dinked finish was brave and capped a fine performance.

    Subs & Manager

    Fermin Lopez (6/10):

Worked hard when he came on the pitch but could not offer the same threat as Olmo had.

    Frenkie De Jong (6/10):

Barca lost a bit of control when he came on for Casado, but was tidy in possession and ran the show in the latter stages.

    Jules Kounde (6/10):

Was solid when he came on but not really threatened.

    Gavi (N/A):

Offered little in the limited time he had on the field.

    Ansu Fati (N/A):

Had little time to make an impact on the game. Had a late goal disallowed.

    Hansi Flick (7/10):

A fabulous first-half display, but will be unhappy with a sloppy second half that allowed Espanyol back into the game.

Tymal Mills' T20 World Cup in doubt after quadriceps injury

His absence would leave England short on death-bowling options; any of Curran, Wood and Willey could replace Mills

Matt Roller02-Nov-2021Tymal Mills will discover in the next 48 hours if he will play any further part in the T20 World Cup after he reported tightness in his right quadriceps during England’s 26-run win against Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Monday night.Mills, England’s joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, left the field after nine balls of his spell, immediately calling for a substitute fielder, Sam Billings, to replace him and heading straight to the dressing room. He was assessed by England’s medical team after the game and will now undergo a scan to determine the extent of the injury.Related

With their qualification for the semi-finals virtually secured ahead of their final group game against South Africa on Saturday, England may opt to keep Mills in their squad if there is even a remote chance of him recovering in time to play a part in the knockout stages next week. Reece Topley – one of three standby players along with James Vince and Liam Dawson – is the most likely candidate to replace him in the squad if he is ruled out.

A serious injury would represent a blow both for Mills and for England. Mills had not played for his country since February 2017 ahead of this World Cup after a long battle with injuries – including a stress fracture last winter which forced him to wear a back brace for three months – and had started the tournament brightly with figures of 2 for 17 against the West Indies and 3 for 27 against Bangladesh. He was expensive against Australia and Sri Lanka, but his pace, left-arm angle and ability to bowl through the middle and at the death helped him balance England’s attack. An injury to Mills would leave England short on death-bowling options other than Chris Jordan, with Tom Curran the only unused squad member who bowls a high percentage of his overs at the end of an innings. Any of Curran, Mark Wood and David Willey could replace Mills in a straight swap, or England may consider rebalancing their side, leaving out a batter and bringing in two seamers to give them more options with the ball.Wood is yet to play in this World Cup after reporting an ankle injury following England’s final warm-up game against New Zealand, and did not warm up with the rest of the squad in Sharjah. Curran, meanwhile, was unavailable for their win against Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi but had a long bowl in the middle on Monday night.

Moore started for Spurs against AZ Alkmaar and impressed throughout, but he was particularly sharp at the start of the second half. The 17-year-old shifted from the right flank to the left, and showed the kind of fearless dribbling ability normally reserved for elite-level players, with Maddison drawing a light-hearted comparison with Brazilian icon Neymar.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Moore now has two Europa League starts under his belt, and has played 21 minutes in the Premier League under Ange Postecoglou too. At his age, his minutes will have to be managed, but Spurs fans appear very excited by the player he could potentially become.

  • WHAT MADDISON SAID

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Maddison said: "From minute 45 to 65 I thought we had Neymar on the left wing! He was brilliant. He's just demanding the ball, fearless, that young fearless mentality, and you never want to take that away from him.

"He's a young kid, he's a brilliant lad, he's a lovely boy, he takes on information, and he's got bags of ability so I'll be there as an older player, hopefully, with some wise words to help him along the way. He's got all the ability, it's just about knuckling down and working hard, which he does to be fair to him."

In the first year of the WBBL there were just 10 matches televised. The WBBL has also announced the full fixture list having previously only been able to commit to the first 20 matches due to the ongoing Covid-19 issues in Australia. The first 20 matches will be played in Tasmania but the tournament will then move as a rolling carnival to Adelaide, Perth, and Mackay in Queensland with the finals venues yet to be locked in. Due to border closures, there will be no regular-season games in New South Wales, Victoria, or the ACT this season.Related

Frontloading Bumrah: will India's powerplay plan be put to the test?

He’s bowled three overs in the powerplay in each of their first two games – a marked difference in how Bumrah’s overs are usually deployed

Shashank Kishore16-Sep-20259:02

Talking T20: How innovations in the format have evolved over time

Two games into their Asia Cup campaign, India have used Jasprit Bumrah differently from the norm.Instead of bowling the majority – or at least half – of his overs at the death, Bumrah has been given three of his four overs inside the powerplay in both matches. Against UAE, it may have been to get him acclimatised to match conditions, having been on a break since the fifth Test against England ended in the first week of August. But India repeated the tactic against Pakistan too.In 244 T20s prior to the Asia Cup, Bumrah had bowled three overs in the powerplay only 11 times, and not once in T20Is since 2019. For context, even in IPL 2025, he averaged just one over in this phase. India have gone spin-heavy in this Asia Cup, and by opting for batting until No. 8, they are playing just one specialist fast bowler with Hardik Pandya taking the new ball. The plan to front load Bumrah’s overs is for him cause the damage that Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy can capitalise on.Related

“We’re very happy using him as an attacking option,” captain Suryakumar Yadav had said after the seven-wicket win over Pakistan on Sunday. “If he picks two wickets, even if he bowls a tight spell of his overs, later on we can have a good cushion for all the spinners to come over and make our job a little easier.”With Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana on the bench, the question is who India will turn to at the death if stretched at the Asia Cup and Bumrah doesn’t have many overs left? If Arshdeep gets into the XI at some stage, he’s the obvious choice for the death overs, having made the role his own in Bumrah’s absence from the T20I side following the 2024 T20 World Cup.The other question is whether any of their opponents can stretch India at the Asia Cup? Their next game is against Oman in Abu Dhabi on Friday – a game of no consequence considering India have already qualified for the Super Four round.None of Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel or Varun Chakravarthy are regular bowlers in the death overs. In T20Is since 2023, Kuldeep has bowled only 8% of his overs in this phase. For Varun it’s 4% and Axar 6%. While dew hasn’t been a factor so far, it could be later in the tournament, making it trickier for the spinners later in the evening.Jasprit Bumrah has bowled three overs in the powerplay in both matches at the Asia Cup•AFP/Getty ImagesOn Sunday, Shaheen Shah Afridi was able to score a career-best 33 off 16 balls at the death, lifting Pakistan to 127 when they had looked like being restricted for less. Kuldeep conceded seven runs in the 17th over, Varin 9 in the 18th, Bumrah 12 in the 19th and Hardik 16 in the final over.”I think Bumrah should bowl two overs with the new ball. That gives you flexibility later,” former India fast bowler Varun Aaron told ESPNcricinfo. “Obviously, the spinners are bowling really well, but if one of them has an off day and you desperately need a wicket, Bumrah is the guy who can break through in the middle. Or be your death overs king.”When you hold him back for two overs at the end, you’re almost guaranteed he won’t go for more than 10 an over. Imagine a scenario where opponents need 50 off five overs. With only one Bumrah over to play [in the death], opponents can afford to play him out and still chase down 43 or 44. With two overs of Bumrah up their sleeve, the equation shifts dramatically.””Having said that, the team management must have thought it through, maybe believing he could get the top batters early by bowling three up front. But personally, I feel two at the start is ideal. Then you have the flexibility of either two at the death or splitting it one in the middle and one at the end. When it gets to the business end, they’ll probably switch to a 2-2 split.”

Everton could forget all about Onana by signing "future icon"

Everton have been heavily restricted as to what they can spend in recent transfer windows, following their recent financial situation which resulted in an eight-point deduction last season.

Sean Dyche’s side have desperately lacked investment, with the club needing to act in a sensible manner this window if they are to pull further clear of any looming relegation worries.

However, they may be handed an opportunity to sign some new talents to improve the squad, but at a cost with multiple first-team players potentially heading for the exit.

Amadou Onana looks the most likely to depart Goodison Park during the off-season, with the Belgian youngster one of the club’s most profitable stars, valued at around £60m amid interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Should he depart, it would undoubtedly leave a huge gaping hole in Everton’s midfield, but it would be short-lived, with the Toffees eyeing one player who could allow Dyche to forget about the 21-year-old.

Everton interested in international star this summer

According to Jeunes Footeux via Sport Witness, Everton are in the race to sign FC Metz’s Senegalese midfielder Lamine Camara this summer.

The 20-year-old, who made 31 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, also has admirers from Fulham and could make the move to the Premier League for a fee in the region of €10m (£8m).

The French side suffered relegation back to the French second tier, with the report claiming the Toffees could look to take advantage of the club’s decline to sign Camara for a cut-price during the off-season.

He’s produced some excellent stats in 2023/24 for Metz, Camara demonstrating talents that he is the perfect man to come in and replace Onana should he leave the club in the coming weeks.

Why Camara can allow Dyche to forget Onana

There’s no denying Onana has been an excellent servant for Everton since his £33m move to the club from Lille back in the summer of 2022.

Amadou Onana for Everton

He’s been a crucial cog in Dyche’s midfield, with his ball-winning abilities catching the eye, operating as the player tasked with breaking up the play in the middle of the park.

However, the Senegalese youngster, who’s been dubbed a “future icon” by talent scouts Jacek Kulig, has excelled despite his tender age, producing stats that are more impressive than the Belgian could manage.

Camara has averaged more combined goals and assists over the last 12 months, a tally that could potentially provide Dyche with an added goal threat, helping the Toffees improve their measly tally from the season just gone.

Despite Onana’s excellent qualities out of possession, he’s been outperformed by the Metz star, who’s won four more tackles than the Belgian whilst also managing seven more interceptions across a similar number of matches.

Camara performs well above his age, showcasing his calmness and ability to have a huge impact on the game from midfield – a quality that will only improve as he develops further in his already exciting career.

Whilst losing Onana may be a huge blow for the club, they have been presented with a perfect opportunity to sign the perfect replacement for a fraction of the price – in a deal that would hugely boost their current PSR position.

India are shedding their over-dependency on Mandhana and Harmanpreet

With the ODI World Cup around the corner, a formidable batting line-up is taking shape

Srinidhi Ramanujam11-May-2025With the conclusion of the women’s tri-nation series in Colombo, it seems like India have reached a moment of clarity. It’s something that the captain Harmanpreet Kaur and the head coach, Amol Muzumdar, have been working towards for a while. A year ago, India weren’t entirely sure of the make-up of their batting line-up. Now, just as a home ODI World Cup is around the corner, their top seven is locked.Colombo has arguably been the most challenging venue for India in the last six months, where batters’ temperament and endurance were tested in the extreme heat. But they responded remarkably in this tri-series against Sri Lanka and South Africa. India posted at least 275 runs four out of five times, and that includes the 342 for 7 in the final. They are showing signs that they are no longer dependent on Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet for the bulk of their runs.”Definitely proud of the entire team, the way we played today,” Harmanpreet said. “Especially our batters, they played good cricket and that’s what we discussed in the beginning that if we won the toss, we will bat and we will look for a really good total on the board and really happy the way we batted today.””A lot of positives, especially the other batters the way they have batted, in the last game Jemimah [Rodrigues] had a knock of hundred, and Harleen [Deol] kept batting for the team and Pratika [Rawal] too and Deepti [Sharma]’s all-round performance and Sneh Rana’s bowling efforts.”Over the past two weeks, India have shown the ability to ride out tough periods with the bat and make their moments of supremacy matter.
The 3-0 loss to Australia in Mumbai last December might have been the wake-up call. Since then, India have played 11 ODIs and lost only one. This run has been built on a batting line-up that is pushing itself to new heights. In six out of the eight matches that they’ve had to set a total, they’ve made over 300.Pratika Rawal averages 63.80 after her first 11 ODIs•SLCIn the series opener against Sri Lanka, when India were asked to chase a target of 148, they did so with nine wickets and nearly 10 overs to spare. Rawal scored an unbeaten fifty, and would go on to score another, continuing her extraordinary run of form since making her debut last December. She is averaging 63.80 after 11 ODIs.Is this the way forward for India, without Shafali Verma? Maybe. Despite a strong showing at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) earlier this year, Shafali was left out of the tri-series. She has also churned out runs with remarkable consistency in domestic cricket since being dropped from the India squad last November. But, for now, India are happy to let Rawal have her run. There was a bond of trust when Rodrigues was handed a role in the middle order. It’s the sort of trust that has survived setbacks. She started her ODI career as a top-order batter, but two years ago, India needed something different from her. They knew Rodrigues, a player of talent and maturity, was capable of batting at any position. But she struggled to find her feet in this new position and had a forgettable 2024: she could muster only 329 runs in 12 innings, only one fifty-plus score.Jemimah Rodrigues on her success in 2025: It’s just the confidence I have and more than that, just me understanding my game•SLCThe new year brought a new Rodrigues. She notched up her maiden ODI hundred against Ireland in January and followed it up with 245 runs in this tri-series – India’s second-most productive batter behind Mandhana. Overall in 2025, she has 360 runs in seven innings. It is evident that she has worked on her strike rate (up to 115 this year from 91 last year) and fitness in the process.”I just want to keep going. The main target is the World Cup,” Rodrigues would say after her second ODI century, against South Africa, a few days ago. She went on to explain that “it’s just the confidence I have and more than that, just me understanding my game. Usually, I used to play 4-5 dot balls, get panicked and throw my wicket. But now, I think that sense of calmness is there and you know, I can make [it] up. And at the same time, a lot of T20 cricket has helped me play in different leagues, in different conditions. It has helped me and given me a belief and a trust in myself. I know that in any condition and any situation, I am well able to deliver what the team requires.”Rodrigues is becoming India’s rock in the middle order. As far as the finishers are concerned, the team has been banking on Richa Ghosh, but they will be more than pleased with Deepti’s 93 against South Africa earlier in this series. It was her first fifty-plus score in ODIs since her unbeaten 68 against England at Lord’s in 2022, and India would be hoping that the senior allrounder carries this form forward.Harleen Deol has helped India find stability•BCCIThe next big box that was ticked is India’s No.3. After trying out Ghosh, Yastika Bhatia, Priya Punia, and D Hemalatha, Deol was slotted in at one-down during the home series against Australia last December. Since her comeback, she has played 14 innings and has done fairly well – 511 runs at an average of 39.30 including a match-winning century against West Indies. In this tri-series, Deol’s top score of 47 came in Sunday’s final against Sri Lanka.Through all this, Mandhana kept doing Mandhana things, which doesn’t come as a surprise anymore. Perhaps it’s even underappreciated because of her mind-boggling consistency. Her 11th ODI century on Sunday propelled India to 342 for 7 in the title clash, which was too much for Sri Lanka as they eventually lost by a margin of 97 runs. She has accumulated 1260 ODI runs in 21 innings since the start of 2024, the most for a batter in this period. This includes six centuries and five fifties. The second best on this list is Hayley Matthews, with 851 runs.Five different India batters made a score of fifty or more over the course of the tri-series. It is a welcome development for a team facing some more big tests.India’s next assignment will be a long tour of England in June-July where they are scheduled to play five T20Is and three ODIs in vastly different conditions compared to Colombo. But for now, they will be content having ticked a lot of boxes in the batting.

West Ham now eyeing surprise free transfer to sign £25,000-a-week player

Having already welcomed Luis Guilherme, West Ham United have reportedly turned their attention towards a surprise transfer target who will soon officially become a free agent.

West Ham transfer news

Into a new chapter under Julen Lopetegui following David Moyes' exit, West Ham have the chance to build on what the Scot left and attempt a return to European football next season. The transfer window will be crucial in achieving that goal, however, and those at the London Stadium seem well aware of that after signing young winger Guilherme.

Speaking for the first time after completing his move, the 18-year-old told the club's official website: “I’m very happy to be signing with West Ham United, a Club that trusted in my work.

“I also want to thank everyone at West Ham, particularly Tim and his team who came to Brazil, and not only talked with me, but also with my family. They presented the project, and both my family and I liked it. So, I'm very happy to be signing with this Club and hope to contribute as much as possible. If things go well, we have a beautiful journey ahead."

With one deal signed and sealed, the Hammers are now eyeing another too. According to reliable reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon, West Ham are eyeing a surprise move to sign Tim Krul following the expiry of his contract at Luton Town. A free agent, West Ham would only need to cover the veteran goalkeeper's reported £25,000-a-week salary in a move that should be feasible at the London club.

Given that Lukasz Fabianski is in the final year of his contract, welcoming a goalkeeper with similar experience could be a wise move from the Hammers, especially if they avoid a transfer fee.

"Outstanding" Krul can bring underrated experience

Whilst he may past his best at 36 years old, what Krul can add to a dressing room is the invaluable experience among a younger squad with players like Guilherme on his way. It's the type of experience that West Ham may miss when Fabianski does depart and the type that Krul can instantly step in to take responsibility for.

The Dutchman has certainly earned fans during his extensive career in English football, including from Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber, who told the club website after Krul's exit last summer: "Tim has been an outstanding servant for Norwich City. He has been a top class goalkeeper and leader during his time with the club.

“He has played a key role in developing the right culture at our club, and was instrumental in our two Championship title-winning seasons, with his form recognised in him winning the Barry Butler Memorial Trophy as our Player of the Season for 2019/20. To see him rebuild his career, which resulted in a recall to the Dutch national team, was also a special moment for Tim, his family and the club."

Palmer made the sensational £42.5 million ($54m) switch from Manchester City to Chelsea in the summer of 2023 as he looked for consistent playing time which he did not achieve under Pep Guardiola. Palmer slotted straight into the Chelsea team and was quick to become their best player in an otherwise disappointing campaign.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

So far this season, Palmer has kept up the same form as the 22-year-old has scored six goals and provided five assists in eight Premier League games. However, former Chelsea and Arsenal defensive midfielder Petit thinks that while Palmer has been impressive, he is yet to show 'world-class' form.

  • WHAT PETIT SAID

Speaking to , Petit said: "Will the hype around Cole Palmer derail his form? No, I don’t think so. Palmer had a very good season last season, but started poorly this season and responded well in September.

"The media are making so much noise about young talented players. Palmer is a very good player but he’s not yet a top international player and that’s the level he needs to reach. He shows promising skills, maturity and personality but he’s done nothing yet if we’re honest and is far from world-class at the moment."
