THE BIGGER PICTURE
Messi inspired a historic League Cup triumph within weeks of his arrival and has Inter Miami back in the hunt for major honours this season – with the Argentine superstar nursing his way back from a couple of injuries.
WHAT MARTINO SAID
Success is now demanded at Chase Stadium, with head coach Martino – who arrived alongside Messi when the Herons were rooted to the foot of the Eastern Conference – telling reporters of how quickly the mindset in Miami has changed: “We were a team that habitually lost for years, and now, we are a team that habitually wins, and that raises expectations. It should be noted that we have worked very hard to change the perception of this team, and we’ve done it having to use many different line-ups due to injuries and national team duty.”

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI AND INTER MIAMI?

When a heavy snow shower ended this match just after lunch on the final day one or two wiseacres at Old Trafford suggested it was all one could expect if one played cricket at such a damn silly time of year. What such people appear to forget is that a year ago when the country had just entered its first lockdown, God’s mordant wit furnished us with one of the balmiest and driest springs in memory. It seems absurd to rule out playing first-class cricket in both April and September simply because the weather is a little iffy; if that was the criterion, we’d hardly get out there at all.Two much more persuasive analyses of this match were supplied after its conclusion by the Sussex skipper, Ben Brown, and Lancashire’s assistant coach, Mark Chilton. They suggested that a game many will recall for the complete absence of both spectators and warmth has still supplied much from which their players can benefit as they ready themselves for the five gorgeous months that await us. Lancashire already knew Dane Vilas was a batsman of the highest class, of course; his 189 was barely par. But the manner in which the home attack approached their work on this final morning, albeit they took only two wickets, was impressive indeed.
Cricket to pay respect to Prince Philip
Play in the County Championship next Saturday will pause between 2.50pm and 4.10pm, to coincide with the funeral of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. The ECB has also recommended that play in recreational cricket stops between 3pm and 4pm, to allow players to observe the one minute’s silence at 3pm.
“That first session is a benchmark now,” said Chilton. “We played with great intensity even when we weren’t picking up wickets. That’s the level at which the players want to perform and if they continue like that, they’ll get the results.”To a degree one needed to watch the cricket closely for two hours to see what Chilton meant. The maintenance of lines of attack, the scarcity of loose balls and the enthusiasm of Lancashire’s fielding rewarded careful study. Even then, Sussex’s openers, Tom Haines and Aaron Thomason resisted Saqib Mahmood, Tom Bailey et al for over an hour until Mahmood took two wickets in successive overs. The first of these fell after two long legs had been posted for Haines, who obliged by hooking the ball straight to Tom Hartley, the finer of the fielders. Less than ten minutes later Stiaan van Zyl’s rather miserable return to the colours was completed when he was leg before to Mahmood for 4, but Thomason and Tom Clark took their team to lunch without further mishap. Not, however, without further comment. Thomason, a properly combative fellow, had apparently already irritated Lancashire by his desire to go off for bad light on Saturday evening, although his keenness may be attributed to an understandable wish to avoid hypothermia. However, when Luke Wood piled into 20-year-old Clark in an attempt to unsettle the lad, Thomason was soon atop the barricades. He and Vilas had already exchanged pleasantries when the umpires decided to snuff the matter out before it graduated from tetchiness to hostility. This attempt was only partially successful for it appeared that Neil Bainton and Martin Saggers were monitoring the situation throughout the morning, rather in the manner of United Nations peacekeepers. In truth the affair was manbags at coffee-time. There will be a few more such contretemps before September is out.But the argy bargy encouraged Brown, who had led the Sussex side comprehensively disembowelled by Lancashire on three boiling days in July 2019. And even more heartening to him had been the bowling of offspinner Jack Carson in freezing condition on a very good pitch and that of debutant Sean Hunt, who picked up three wickets and was the pick of Brown’s seamers in Lancashire’s first innings.”I’m really proud of our efforts,” said Brown. “To go toe to toe with a really strong Lancashire side, one that you would expect to be up there at the end of the season, was a great start to the season. To judge from that last session of fiery cricket I think we rather surprised Lancashire and it’s just a shame that the weather took a hand on the last two days.”To see the guys have each other’s backs is something I’m very passionate about. I thought it was really hard first-class cricket but Sussex v Lancashire has a fantastic tradition of fiery games and to renew that and see people stand up for each other made it an excellent start to the season.”So what price playing in April now? Sussex travel to Cardiff on Wednesday where they will meet a Glamorgan side buoyed by the cricket they played at Headingley. Lancashire host Northants, who responded to Kent’s tall score at Canterbury with one of their own. And all 18 teams have a chance of winning the County Championship. Heavens above, if things carry on like this, there is a danger we might start enjoying ourselves.
New Proteas Women’s head coach sees red-ball game as key
ESPNcricinfo staff18-Dec-2024Firdose Moonda and Valkerie Baynes chat following the long-awaited appointment of a new Proteas Women’s head coach, Mandla Mashimbyi, while recalling their highlights of the last year and looking ahead to 2025
Over the last decade, Manchester United have signed an abundance of talent who were supposed to help return the club to its glory days.
The transfer activity has largely been a failure, but the signing of Bruno Fernandes could prove to be the best decision in the recent history of the Red Devils.
Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes
The Portuguese Magnifico has been simply out of this world since joining in 2020, scoring 79 goals and providing 66 assists in 233 appearances.
If there was anyone to lead Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s rebuild towards triumph and dominance, it’s Fernandes, and therefore, it’s no surprise to see that the new owner wants to sign a player who could make the captain even better.
Man Utd want to sign a defensive midfielder
In the last 48 hours, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano took to X to say that Man Utd are ‘seriously considering’ bringing in a new midfielder.
An option that’s been discussed is Edson Alvarez, who previously worked with Erik Ten Hag at Ajax.
It’s said that the Mexican has been discussed internally due to the Dutch boss appreciating his quality and personality.
However, any deal this summer could prove to be difficult, with West Ham United viewing him as a key player that they’d like to keep.
Why Edson Alvarez would be perfect for Fernandes
Since joining West Ham last summer for £35.4m, Alvarez has become known for being an old-fashioned, no-nonsense defensive midfielder.
The 26-year-old featured as the deepest midfielder within the 4-2-3-1 formation, becoming a "monster" at the heart of David Moyes’ midfield, as Hammers present Dan Woffenden stated.
Edson-Alvarez-in-action-for-West-Ham-United
Across the campaign, the Mexican started 28 times in the Premier League, while also making seven appearances in the Europa League.
However, he’s not exactly shown his true potential since moving to England, with his play style at Ajax proving that he has more to offer, which Ten Hag will help him unleash.

During his time at Ajax under the current United boss, Alvarez operated as a lone number six, taking on the majority of the defensive responsibility.
As shown by his tackles, balls recovered, and duels won, the number 19 has always been a monster defensively, with football scout Jacek Kulig describing him as a "superb tackler" who is "fast, tenacious, and charismatic."
This defensive security in the middle of the field would benefit Fernandes significantly, as it would unleash him in higher positions up the field where he can work his magic.
During the number eight’s best campaign at Old Trafford, where he scored 18 league goals and provided 12 assists in 2020/21, he played ahead of a Scott McTominay and Fred duo, who gave him the freedom to express himself more in and around the box.
The addition of Alvarez could see that version of Fernandes return next season, but what else can the former Club America player bring to the table?
Unlike West Ham, who only had 40.8% possession last season, Ajax always dominated possession, which allowed the midfielder to showcase his technical ability.
This gives an indication of what he could bring from an in-possession perspective at United, considering that Ten Hag would likely duplicate what worked for him at Ajax.
Overall, the signing of Alvarez may not be one that will get the Red Devil’s faithful off their seats in excitement, but he could play a huge role in making the team much more competitive and successful.
What Man Utd's dream XI could look like after £230m spending spree
Nottingham Forest have endured a superb upturn in form under Sean Dyche over the last few weeks after the manager took the reins from Ange Postecoglou.
The Englishman has reinstalled a defensive solidity back into the first-team squad, as seen by the club’s recent upturn in form in the Premier League.
His side have only lost twice in his eight games in the role, with his Red managing to keep four clean sheets in the process – including one against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Reds may have lost 2-0 to Brighton and Hove Albion over the weekend, but it’s merely a bump in the road, especially considering the excellent results since his arrival.
However, with the January transfer window rapidly approaching, numerous players have already appeared on their radar to try and bolster the ranks for the remainder of the campaign.
Forest’s hunt for new additions in the January window
In recent weeks, a whole host of players have been touted with a move to join Forest, but Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood stands out as one of the most consistent players touted with a transfer.
It was reported that Dyche’s side saw the 20-year-old as their primary target for the winter window, but it was unclear about how much a deal would set Evangelos Marinakis back.
However, it seems as though the youngster won’t be departing the AMEX this window, with Fabian Hurzeler’s men not entertaining any offers for his signature.
He’s not the only player currently being considered by the Reds at present, with Inter Milan star Stefan de Vrij another player currently being considered by the club at present.
According to Football Insider, Dyche’s side are keen on a move to land the Dutch international, with the player having just six months left on his deal at the San Siro.
They also state that the board are in the market for added defensive reinforcements in the winter window, which could make the 33-year-old the perfect target.
Why Forest’s latest target would be Milenkovic 2.0
Signing centre-backs from Serie A hasn’t been alien to Forest over recent seasons, with Nikola Milenkovic joining the club from Fiorentina in the summer of 2024.
The Serbian international joined for just £12m, with such a deal being one of the best deals in the club’s history – as seen by his immediate impact in the Premier League last campaign.
He featured in all but one game last campaign, even scoring five times and registering two assists – showcasing his impressive ability at both ends of the pitch.
The 28-year-old managed to win the club’s Player of the Season award in 2024/25, helping the Reds secure European football for the first time in 30 years.
This campaign, he’s still managed to be a key component in the side’s backline, featuring in every minute of the league season and offering the defensive solidity needed in Dyche’s system.
He’s often partnered Murillo at the heart of the defence, but Morato covered his compatriot against the Seagulls at the weekend – even producing a huge mistake which contributed to the defeat.
Such a scenario has no doubt led to rumours over a move for De Vrij in the coming months, which could see a repeat of the deal that saw Milenkovic move to the East Midlands.
The Dutchman, who earns £118k-per-week, has only made two appearances so far this campaign, but he has produced some remarkable stats which could see him thrive in the Premier League.
De Vrij, who’s been dubbed “sensational” by journalist Nima Roodsari, has completed 94% of the passes he’s completed, whilst also completing 100% of the dribbles he’s attempted.

Such numbers reflect the centre-back’s talent with the ball at his feet – something which is extremely important within the current philosophy at the City Ground.
Without the ball, he’s been just as impressive in Italy’s top division, as seen by his tally of two tackles and 5.5 duels won per 90 for Cristian Chivu’s Inter Milan squad.
Other numbers, such as 3.5 aerials won per 90, subsequently achieving a success rate of 60%, showcase his dominance out of possession – matching Milenkovic’s talents in the Premier League in recent years.
It’s unclear how much a deal for the Dutchman would cost in the upcoming window, but he certainly could offer an experienced and immediate option at the back.
Should he reach the levels produced by Milenkovic in Nottingham, there’s no reason why De Vrij could make himself a fan-favourite in the hunt for European success come the end of the campaign.

Chelsea's WSL match with Man Utd postponed
Conflicted with Champions League tie with Real Madrid
Arsenal boss Eidevall says it's "not good enough"

WHAT HAPPENED?
Chelsea's match with Manchester United in the Women's Super League on Sunday was postponed as it was too close to the Blues' Champions League tie with Real Madrid on October 8. The Women's Professional Leagues Limited, which now runs the WSL, said the cancellation was to prioritise player welfare. But the match was scheduled weeks before the Champions League draw, as Gunners boss Eidevall described the whole affair as "amateurish behaviour".

WHAT JONAS EIDEVALL SAID
He said, via : "Out of the 16 teams, 13 were scheduled to play on the Friday or Saturday and the three English teams were all scheduled to play on the Sunday. We have a league organisation that doesn’t act proactively on these matters. It is damaging for the fans. It is simply not good enough from the league. Do the league want English teams to be successful at European level? I would hope the answer to that would be yes, but the actions show differently. It shows that this is not one of their priorities."
He added: ""It is very important that this is the first time in the group stage that three teams reached the group stage. That should be something we celebrate – instead it becomes a problem. Now it's even worse for us because of this amateurish behaviour, with not having a proactive plan. What needs to change is the approach to Champions League football. It is not good enough to blame it on UEFA because everyone across Europe has had the same information for a long time, and the only one that hasn't acted on that information is the WSL."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
While playing a league game and then a Champions League match in the space of two days is far from ideal, the right decision may have been made to postpone it. But this could have been handled a whole lot better, especially as Chelsea's game with United was a sell-out and was picked for Sky Sports coverage.

WHAT NEXT?
While Chelsea and United are not playing in the WSL this weekend, Eidevall's Arsenal host Everton in a battle between fourth and 11th in the table. A win could take the Gunners top of the table if results go their way.
Derbyshire set to lose promising seamer as he returns to Hove for second stint
George Dobell11-Jul-2021Fynn Hudson-Prentice is to join Sussex from Derbyshire at the end of the season.Hudson-Prentice, the 25-year-old seamer, developed through the Sussex pathway and played seven first-team games for the club in 2014 and 2015. He was released at the end of 2016.The MCC Young Cricketers programme gave him another chance, though, and he was signed by Derbyshire in 2019. He is the club’s equal leading wicket-taker (with 21 at 24.95) in the LV= Insurance County Championship this season. He also made 99 in his maiden first-class appearance for the club and featured in the side that made it to T20’s Finals Day in 2019. As such, he is seen as a multi-dimensional all-rounder who can contribute in all formats.”I remember encountering Fynn at a Lord’s Test match when he was with the MCC Young Cricketers and really noticing a change in the way he was going about things since leaving Sussex,” Sussex’s T20 Head Coach, James Kirtley, said. “I kept tabs on him as he went off to Derbyshire and it has been exciting to see him do really well over the last couple of years.”Fynn has grown as a player and a person. He’s a Sussex lad, he’s a performer, a match-winner and his skill-set gives us real balance in our sides in all three formats. That ticks the boxes for us with the strategy we’ve got and will continue to pursue.”The news is a blow to Derbyshire, though, who are in the middle of a poor season. They are bottom of the North Group in the Championship and seventh in the North Group of the T20 Blast. They are also being sued by a former club stalwart, Tony Palladino.”I’m massively grateful for the time I’ve spent at Derbyshire over the past three seasons,” Hudson-Prentice said, “and I wish the club all the best for the future.”Although I enjoyed my time at the club, I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to go back home to where it all began. I’m really looking forward to the next chapter of my career at Hove.”
da doce: West Ham United supporters will understandably sit on the fence at this maiden stage of Julen Lopetegui's tenure, and the different aspects of the forthcoming weeks will determine which side the lion's share decides to jump off.
da dobrowin: Last season's ninth-place Premier League finish has left the Hammers looking ahead to domestic contests next season, which, in some ways, provides Lopetegui with a calm and solid foundation from which to build upwards.
There are several pressing concerns. Despite signing 18-year-old winger Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras for £25.5m, more depth could be required as Ghanaian, Mohammed Kudus considers pushing for an exit after just one year.
West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus.
Perhaps more concerningly, Lucas Paqueta's FA betting charge could see him banished from professional football, swiping West Ham of an elite-level playmaker.
It would be pertinent for Lopetegui to prudently approach the situation and seek a successor, and indeed, recent reports suggest that that might be the case.
West Ham eyeing Paqueta replacement
According to Get French Football News, West Ham are set to rival Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain for the signing of Lyon attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki.
Cherki, who is entering the final year of his contract at the Groupama Stadium, is expected to be sold this summer as the Ligue 1 outfit push to raise €100m (£85m) in player sales to combat financial concerns.
Lyon star Rayan Cherki
Aged 20, Cherki is a highly talented player with a sharp creative sense and could prove to be a bargain for the London Stadium side given his reported price tag of just €25m (£21m).
Rayan Cherki's season in numbers
Cherki might be in the early stage of his professional career but he has made quite an impression for Lyon, already having notched 17 goals and 25 assists across 141 appearances.
Silky and artful, Cherki provided an influential and creative 2023/24 campaign despite Lyon's shocking start to the season, with talent scout Jacek Kulig even describing him as the "pure difference-maker" back in March.
Indeed, as per Sofascore, he scored just one goal across his 19 starts in the French top flight but also contributed with six assists, a product of his constant flow of creativity, averaging 1.3 key passes per game and keeping it crisp with an 81% pass success rate.
Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki
More impressive, perhaps, is his combative disposition on the field and his unceasing desire to drive the ball forward, completing 2.5 dribbles per game and averaging 4.8 successful duels to boot.
He was noted as a "player with exceptional qualities" by his former manager, Rudi Garcia, and after some polish and refinement, could prove to be a tailor-made Premier League star.
West Ham may well be the perfect club to lift him toward his full potential, especially given that he could be the second coming of an iconic former Hammer.
Why West Ham are interested in Cherki
We're talking, of course, about Dimitri Payet, whose short but spectacular stint in east London has cemented cult status that will hang at the top of the division's sprawling tapestry for time immemorial.
West Ham signed Payet from French club Marseille for just £10m in 2015, with his almighty efforts in English football leading to cascades of praise, even dubbed "one of the most important players in Europe" by manager and compatriot Zinedine Zidane.
He posted 12 goals and 15 assists across his opening term for the Hammers but departed at the midpoint of the 2016/17 campaign, citing home sickness after the Irons regressed in cohesion and performance level.
Former West Ham star Dimitri Payet
His goal haul was impressive but barely scratches the surface concerning Payet's brilliance. This, truly, was a barnstorming, script-overhauling machine, with his genius on the ball leaving the Premier League in awe.
With eagle-eyed vision, unmatched playmaking quality and a talismanic effect that few can replicate by half, the former France international gave West Ham some magical moments, and that could be emulated in the form of Cherki, who could also be landed for a bargain fee, welcomed from over the channel.
As per FBref, the young Frenchman ranks among the top 12% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shots taken, the top 15% for assists, the top 8% for passes attempted, the top 4% for progressive passes and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90.
Cherki has the level of technique and vision to replicate Payet's dizzying heights with the Hammers, principally featuring centrally but also competent when placed on either flank.

It's quite clear that Cherki has the talent to succeed in a squad like West Ham's especially when considering that he is not too far off Paqueta's exemplary defensive and energy-centred metrics.
The Brazilian playmaker sits deeper than most attacking midfielders and maintains a robust and all-action approach to his game. Nonetheless, Cherki has still managed to outpoint in regarding progressive passing while also eclipsing him for ball-carrying metrics.
This underscores the Lyon starlet's athletic ability and penchant for making things happen. At West Ham, at the dawn of a new era, this could be crucial.
West Ham ranked 15th for big chances created in the Premier League last season, seemingly unable to maintain the kind of attacking spark to truly click into gear when on the advance.
With Cherki added to the fold, it could be the initiation of a transformation akin to that of when Payet waltzed in. Such is the French phenom's prodigious talent, and such is the importance of enjoying a positive transfer window for Lopetegui, who needs to counter several pressing issues with some exciting signings.
