Approach made: West Brom make contact to sign striker with 78 career goals

West Bromwich Albion have made contact with a player who has scored 78 goals in his career, according to a new report.

Carlos Corberan will be pleased with his team's start to the new 2024/25 Championship season. The Baggies put last season’s play-off heartbreak behind them as they beat QPR on the opening weekend, and they have since followed that up with a respectable draw against Leeds United at the Hawthorns.

West Bromwich Albion are nearing towards completing a deal for this midfield gem.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 21, 2024 West Brom transfer news

As just stated, West Brom suffered play-off heartbreak last season at the hands of eventual winners Southampton, and that disappointment would have left a bitter taste in Corberan’s mouth heading into this new campaign.

Therefore, the Spaniard would have been keen to make sure his side was better equipped for this new season. The Baggies have been busy in the transfer window, and so far, with over a week left before it closes, they have added seven new players to their squad.

Some of those additions include former Manchester United and Middlesbrough defender Paddy McNair, as well as Lewis Dobbin on loan from Aston Villa and striker Devante Cole, who was a free agent after leaving Barnsley. The club has used the free agent market to their advantage, but they could soon be looking to the loan market as Corberan eyes more transfers. It was reported on Tuesday that West Brom are working on a deal to sign midfielder Uros Racic.

According to Express & Star reporter Lewis Cox, the Baggies are keen on signing the 6ft 4 midfielder on a potential loan deal for this campaign, as he’s seen as the ideal replacement for Okay Yokuslu. Racic has been with Italian side Sassuolo since August 2023, and he has also represented his country, Serbia, 12 times.

But signing Racic might not be the only deal the club is looking to make, as West Brom now have their eye on a striker.

West Brom make contact to sign Will Keane

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, West Brom have made an enquiry to Preston North End over the potential signing of striker Will Keane. The report doesn’t state how much West Brom are willing to pay or how much Preston would want for the player, but the Republic of Ireland international appears to be on the radar of the Midlands side.

The 31-year-old joined the Lilywhites in July 2023 from Wigan Athletic after being with the Latics for three years. Keane had previous experience with Preston before joining them last summer, as he spent the first half of the 2015/16 season on loan at Deepdale.

Keane played 40 times for Preston last season, 38 of which came in the Championship, and during that time the striker netted 13 goals and recorded three assists. The forward has also featured in one of the club’s two league games so far this season, as well as playing in the EFL Cup.

Keane has also played for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City and Ipswich Town alongside Wigan Athletic and Preston in his career, and so far, the 31-year-old has 78 goals to his name in all senior competitions.

Real Madrid player ratings vs Sevilla: Kylian Mbappe back to his best, scores stunner and Rodrygo impresses, Los Blancos cruise to put pressure on Atletico Madrid

The striker sparkled as Carlo Ancelotti's side eased their way to three points, and worked their way firmly back into the title race

Kylian Mbappe turned in a wonderful striking performance, while the rest of the Real Madrid attack hummed around him as Los Blancos eased their way to a 4-2 win over an admittedly poor Sevilla side. The Frenchman scored the first, and was involved in the other three, marking perhaps his best showing in white to date. Carlo Ancelotti will be annoyed that his side conceded twice, but this was otherwise a remarkably efficient attacking performance.

It didn't take long for Madrid to find their flow. Los Blancos were on it from the first minute, and, if anything, it was a surprise that the first goal didn't come before the 10 minute mark. It was a wonderful one, though. Mbappe provided the first, an outrageous spank into the top corner from outside the box.

The second came soon after, Federico Valverde smashing on in from outside the box after a well-worked corner routine. Rodrygo made it three about 34 minutes, completing a wonderful team goal with a calm finish.

There was a Madrid blip, though, Isaac Romero pulling one back after getting concerningly open on a simple cross and header. That proved to be little more than an annoyance, though. Brahim Diaz bagged the fourth, redeeming an otherwise quiet performance with a fine combination and dink to put the game beyond reach. Los Blancos saw the game out after that. Mbappe had a couple of half chances, while some more incisive passing might have generated a chance or two. Still, those did little to impact what was an otherwise wonderful day for Carlo Ancelotti and Co., who are really starting to find their stride in La Liga.

'Calm' restored to England squad after frustrating Women's Ashes build-up

Slight easing of Covid rules allows players to feel more relaxed, vice-captain Sciver says

Valkerie Baynes18-Jan-2022England have undergone a mental shift which Nat Sciver, their vice-captain, believes will go some way towards overcoming a difficult preparation for the Women’s Ashes, starting on Thursday.Speaking from Adelaide, where the squad held their first training session since introducing new, slightly eased Covid-prevention protocols, Sciver said the players had enjoyed a feeling of “calm” after being “very frustrated” by strict social distancing protocols. The shift was a physical one too, with the group holding their first in-person team meeting and allowed to gather in small groups outside.”Being together and being as one as a group is part of why we love touring,” Sciver said on Tuesday. “Being away from your family is hard and being away from your home, but then when you have that group and […] just being able to go around to someone’s room, it makes such a big difference.”That is one of the rules that changed for us. As we’re now Covid-secure, the group is secure and we can mingle a little bit more – still in smaller groups, but yeah, I think that feeling was back again today.”Today’s been the first day where I think everyone’s feeling bit more calm, whereas last week everyone was very frustrated with the rules that we’ve had to adhere by. I think everyone took a breath and enjoyed themselves. Before that, everyone was like: ‘Well, when are we going to be able to meet out? Are we going to be able to hug each other?’ The unknown was stressing people out a lot.”Related

One member of England’s support staff tested positive for Covid last week and has remained in isolation in Canberra but all other members of the touring party who travelled to Adelaide have tested negative. Having Covid enter the camp, albeit contained, along with rain-hit preparations and a schedule switch to allow for pre-World Cup quarantine requirements in New Zealand led captain Heather Knight to describe her side’s Ashes build-up as “pretty average” and coach Lisa Keightley to admit: “I wouldn’t say we’ve started that well.”England were beaten by England A in both of their T20 warm-up matches on Sunday. Sciver scored 1 and took 2 for 8 from three overs in one of those as left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone claimed an extraordinary 7 for 14, while Sciver scored 33 and took 1 for 20 in the other. In an earlier, rain-affected 35-over match in which England beat England A by 10 runs, Sciver scored a run-a-ball 71 and took 3 for 28, with Knight also scoring a half-century.Meanwhile for England A, Emma Lamb and Eve Jones impressed in the first T20 warm-up, scoring 48 and 44 respectively, while 17-year-old Alice Capsey made 44 off 34 balls in the 35-over match, where Lauren Bell took 3 for 35.”It’s been quite challenging already and quite difficult to keep remembering that we have done the training and we have done the work,” Sciver said. “That’s why today’s been really good. I think that everyone was in a really good place today and keeping those thoughts in their mind… in the moment it’s hard to remember that it’s not the be-all or end-all, the game that we just played.”Nat Sciver had a frustrating English summer•PA Photos/Getty Images

On her own form, Sciver said she felt she had made improvements after lean returns with bat and ball at home against New Zealand last year. She played four of the five ODIs against the White Ferns, scoring 53 runs at an average of 13.25 and took three wickets at 31.66. She managed just 20 runs across the three T20Is at 6.66 with a highest score of 14 and took two wickets. Before that, she was the second-highest run-scorer behind Mithali Raj in the ODI series against India, having scored 142 runs at 71.00, while in the T20Is she was third-highest with 98 runs, including a top score of 55. She took two wickets in the ODI series and three in the T20s.”I feel good,” Sciver said. “I feel better than I finished the English summer, so I’m happy with where I am at the minute and, like I said, preparation wasn’t ideal, but I think I got the most out of it and I’m raring to go.”And she revealed her strategy for managing the demands of being an allrounder ahead of not only a multi-format Ashes series – the three T20Is will be followed by a Test and three ODIs – but also England’s 50-over World Cup defence in March.”Breaking it down has been a bit easier,” she added. “I think if I think of it all at once it can be a bit daunting. But I know that the role that I have to play is is very important and I wouldn’t want my role to change. So I know that there’s going to be hard work coming up. I’m going to be probably be very sore, but that’s where I guess all of the work that we’ve done fitness-wise and gym, strength-wise and just being on it with your recovery comes in.”Hopefully keeping physically fresh will take care of itself. Keeping mentally fresh I think will be a bit more of a challenge.”

Fabrizio Romano: £51m star agrees to join as Chelsea seal another signing

A £51 million player has now also agreed to join Chelsea this summer and manager Enzo Maresca appears set to sign him, taking the Blues' tally of new arrivals to 13 in another busy window.

Chelsea have also sealed a £34.5 million deal for Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion, with the 20-year-old set to sign a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge after the club agreed to let Conor Gallagher go the other way.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano claims that both Gabriel Mec and Mike Penders are expected to join Chelsea as well, adding to Maresca's ever-growing crop of young talent as the west Londoners continue to build a team for the future.

There is still time remaining for Chelsea to reach an agreement over signing Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, having been in talks with Antonio Conte's side since last week.

Reliable journalists like Matt Law of The Telegraph refuse to rule out the possibility of Chelsea signing Osimhen and Omorodion, as Maresca's side seek to add more firepower ahead of a crucial 2024/2025 Premier League season. Chelsea have also been after a new senior winger all summer, and failed to win the race for Michael Olise, who put pen to paper on a move to Bayern Munich instead.

Chelsea were tipped to use makeweights like Raheem Sterling in a move for Olise, but the prospect of a part-exchange deal wasn't enough to make the 22-year-old choose a move across London.

Maresca's men were forced to move on to alternative targets, and according to Romano, the search for a new star wide man is now over.

Chelsea set to sign Pedro Neto as he agrees to join the club

The respected transfer journalist, sharing news on Friday evening, gave his famous 'here we go' to the signing of Wolves star Pedro Neto.

Neto has agreed to join Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £51 million, bringing an end to their hunt for a winger, in some very sudden transfer news out of the club.

The Portugal international bagged 11 assists and three goals across 24 appearances in all competitions for Wolves last season, but concerns will surround Neto's questionable injury record during his time at Molineux.

However, when fit and available, the 24-year-old's quality and proven Premier League experience should be a real asset for Maresca out wide.

After the match, Maddison told : "That's a birthday I’ll look back on quite fondly. To come here to the champions and perform like that and get the result. You have to cherish these ones, they don’t come around often. "I thought we were brilliant. It was everything we wanted to show of a top Spurs team. We were clinical, we had cutting edge, we pressed at times. We weathered the storm, had grit and determination and scored four brilliant goals."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

For City, the defeat deepened an already troubling slump. They have now lost five consecutive matches across all competitions, an unprecedented run for a team of their calibre under Guardiola. Moreover, according to Opta, they are the first reigning top-flight champions to endure such a losing streak since Chelsea in March 1956.

Another Palmer situation: Pep at risk of losing "electrifying" Man City ace

One of the Premier League’s best players during the 2023/24 season was Manchester City academy graduate Cole Palmer. The 22-year-old joined Chelsea from their top-flight rivals on the blue half of Manchester for a fee of £42.5m.

It is fair to say that his first season at Stamford Bridge exceeded expectations. The England international, who scored in the final of Euro 2024, scored 25 goals and grabbed 15 assists for the Blues in just 45 appearances last season. That included 22 goals and 11 assists in 33 top-flight games for Chelsea.

His 33 combined goal involvement were more than any other Premier League player last season. Erling Haaland and Ollie Watkins were the only two players to register more than 30 in the English top flight, with 32 apiece.

However, perhaps even more impressively, there were only two players with more combined goals and assists last season in Europe’s big five leagues. They were Palmer’s England teammate Harry Kane, who registered 44 goals and assists, and Kylian Mbappe, who scored and assisted 34 times in Ligue 1.

It was perhaps a poor judgement on Pep Guardiola's account to let Palmer leave, given his obvious talent, which was also on show for City just weeks before he departed the Etihad Stadium for west London. He scored in the Community Shield against Arsenal and the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla.

With the transfer window once again here, City could well be in danger of repeating their mistake of selling Palmer, by letting another academy graduate leave the club in search of regular first-team football.

Man City transfer news

The Cityzens could be in line to lose some of their stars this summer, with the likes of Ederson and Kevin De Bruyne both linked with moves away from the club. Both are wanted by Saudi Arabian sides, with the Brazilian goalkeeper likely to leave, but the legendary Belgian midfielder is seemingly set to stay at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

However, one of the more frustrating outgoings for City this summer could see starlet Oscar Bobb depart the club, in a repeat of the Palmer sale. According to a report from Danny Rust and Dean Jones of GIVEMESPORT, Bobb 'has gained interest' from Newcastle United and Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester City's Oscar Bobb

The two clubs are thought to be interested in doing a deal for Bobb on either a loan or a permanent basis. There is a strong interest in the player coming in, particularly from St James’ Park.

Should a permanent deal be struck, a potential price is yet to be named for Bobb. However, the young attacking midfielder is valued at £9.4m by Football Transfers, and given the money City got from selling Palmer, it can be inferred that a deal could be struck anywhere between the £10m and £40m mark.

Oscar Bobb’s City career so far

The 21-year-old Norweigan has struggled to nail down a spot for City so far in his short career but has impressed when he has played. He played 26 times in the first team last season, including 14 games in the Premier League. Frustratingly, he started just two games, and averaged 22 minutes each appearance, playing 295 minutes in total.

He grabbed one goal, which, ironically, came against the Magpies at St James’ Park. That goal was crucial for City; a stoppage-time winner, assisted by the ever-classy De Bruyne, ensured the Cityzens completed an impressive comeback in a game they were losing 2-1 after 37 minutes.

Bobb also registered an assist in the Premier League, during a 6-1 thrashing of Bournemouth, and got himself a goal in the Champions League away to Red Star and an assist in the FA Cup against Huddersfield.

It is not easy to get into that side, ahead of the plethora of talent Guardiola has at his disposal in the attacking midfield role. Bobb is competing against the likes of De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden for a spot in the starting eleven.

Chelsea target Oscar Bobb in action for Manchester City.

Even if he were to move out wide, Bobb's competition would include the likes of Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish. City's side is not at all easy to break into, hence Palmer's departure last summer.

However, he is a talented youngster, an enterprising midfielder who is a real creative force. Last season according to FBref, he averaged 5.37 progressive passes and 4.33 passes into the penalty box per 90 minutes. The latter of those stats ranked him in the top 1%. It is worth remembering that is from a smaller sample size given his lack of minutes.

Bobb is a highly talented young player, so to get such a lack of minutes naturally could hamper his development. As the footballing world saw with Palmer, he exploded when he left the club and had the chance to get regular game time. This is certainly something that could happen to the 21-year-old.

Under 23 scout Antonio Mango called Bobb an “electrifying” attacking midfielder, and it seems like a waste of his talent to merely sit on the bench for City. Be it a loan or a permanent move away, it could be the most ideal thing for the Norwegian attacking midfielder at this stage of his career.

For Guardiola, however, letting the in-demand talent depart could well come back to bite him once again.

While Lopetegui's side didn't exactly get off to a flying start in their opening Premier League game of the season, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa at the London Stadium, this real squad restructure gives hope to supporters that this campaign could be a very fruitful one.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, speaking to GiveMeSport recently, also suggested that West Ham may not be done in terms of new signings.

"With regards to forwards, it will probably depend on departures in that area," said Sheth.

"We hear a lot about Maxwel Cornet and Danny Ings potentially leaving. Would that be enough for them to go into the market to bring in another player? So it's definitely one to watch."

West Ham have been sporadically linked with a move for Roma striker Tammy Abraham in that regard, alongside Paris-Saint Germain ace Carlos Soler.

West Ham in talks with PSG over signing Carlos Soler

According to reliable French newspaper L'Equipe, the Spain international midfielder is back on Lopetegui's agenda heading into the final phase of this summer window.

They claim West Ham are discussing terms over an agreement for Soler, as they attempt to beat Premier League rivals Brighton to his signature. PSG want around £17 million to sell the 27-year-old outright, but they're currently in negotiations over a move.

PSG midfielder Carlos Soler

Soler made 24 Ligue 1 appearances under Luis Enrique last term, with half of those being full starts. On around £107,000-per-week, according to West Ham insider Sean Whetstone, the former Valencia star has also been called a "lovely" player by football journalist Sid Lowe.

He has played a role in the development of several young players, including recent academy graduates like Tom Banton, Lewis Goldsworthy and Will Smeed.Gloucestershire said that Snell would be “responsible for delivering success on the field by developing a vision and strategy that puts the team in a position to win titles” and reiterated their ambition to win a white-ball trophy within the next two years, as well as a first-ever County Championship by 2025. Gloucestershire will play in Division One next season, belatedly reaping the rewards of their 2019 promotion.”I delighted to be joining a club with ambitious plans and an extremely talented playing squad and staff,” Snell said. “We have an experienced core group of players which will be looking to build on the 2021 season. Will Brown and the board have made some exciting additions to the squad that I’m confident will help to push the club further forward, and that the supporters will continue to enjoy watching and cheering on.”Gloucestershire is a club that’s rich in tradition but is also an organisation that has exciting points of difference. It’s imperative that we respect the tradition and culture of the club but we also develop our ability to innovate, prepare and develop a cricket team that can achieve sustained success on the field.”Brown said: “We want to win trophies and I’m confident that Steve, working alongside our talented playing and coaching squad, will help us to achieve sustainable success. This is an incredibly exciting time to be a part of Gloucestershire Cricket: we’re a club on the up and we’re looking forward to the challenge of playing in Division One of the County Championship next season.”
