Hughes and Slot now plotting double Liverpool signing in the January window

Liverpool are interested in completing a double signing during the January transfer window in two problem positions, according to a new report regarding their upcoming business.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds are still stinging after their 1-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest last Saturday, as Arne Slot suffered his first defeat in charge. It was the kind of result that can make supporters criticise a lack of summer business, with Federico Chiesa the only signing made for the here and now, alongside Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has remained at Valencia on loan for the time being.

There is still a chance for Liverpool to sign free agents, should the chance arise, and one transfer report has said that Adrien Rabiot’s representatives approached the Merseysiders over snapping up the Frenchman. They didn’t take up the offer, though, even though many fans would have loved to see another midfielder come in.

Adrien Rabiot for France.

Sunderland pair Chris Rigg and Anthony Patterson have also been linked with moves to Anfield, with the former a massive talent who is also wanted by Real Madrid, despite still only being 17 years of age.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Patterson is being looked at as a potential replacement for Caoimhin Kelleher, who could leave Liverpool at the end of this season, at which point he will only have one year remaining on his current deal.

Liverpool eyeing double January signing

According to a new report from Football Insider, Liverpool want to make two new signings in January, as sporting director Richard Hughes looks to work his magic. It is claimed that a “defensive midfielder and left-sided centre-back” are being targeted by the Reds, having also been “priorities” during the summer, despite no players coming in there.

Liverpool supporters will be buoyed by this update, during a time in which there is plenty of unrest about FSG’s inability to provide managers with enough transfer funds. That being said, the money was made available to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, but he decided to stay put.

A midfielder of the Spaniard’s ilk is still needed, with the Reds not possessing an elite No.6 in the mould of Rodri, even though Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister have been largely excellent so far this season.

Hughes and Michael Edwards appear to be picky when it comes to nailing an addition in that area, but there comes a point where signing someone there is paramount, with many strong defensive midfield options all over the world. Ideally, though, Zubimendi would become available again in January, with a transfer sealed at that point.

Meanwhile, a left-sided central defender also makes complete sense, at a time when Virgil van Dijk is 33 years of age and needs to be handled with care. There is no natural backup option in his role currently, so snapping up an understudy is imperative, especially if he can also shine as a left-back.

Move over Rigg & Mundle: 8/10 Sunderland star stole the show vs Luton

Sunderland’s rollercoaster ride of a Championship season reached new highs this mid-week, with the Black Cats now three points clear at the top of the league after a determined win away at Luton Town.

It wasn’t a vintage performance from Regis Le Bris’ men by any stretch of the imagination – with the Hatters registering 19 shots to the away side’s lesser nine – but the Wearside outfit managed to dig deep in the end to clinch another three points in a dogged 2-1 victory.

Of course, there was some magic in the attacking areas for the away masses to hang onto at Kenilworth Road, as Romaine Mundle and Chris Rigg dazzled down the wings for the league leaders all night long.

Rigg & Mundle's performances vs Luton

With Wilson Isidor having a quiet time of things versus the Hatters as the lone striker, it was time for both Mundle and Rigg to come to the fore for their side to ensure another three points was forthcoming, and they very much delivered.

Rigg would open the scoring with a calm finish under pressure, with the 17-year-old only registering one shot all game but coming up trumps when it mattered, alongside his equally clinical teammate scoring this sublime winner past a helpless Thomas Kaminski to seal the hard-fought win.

Demonstrating their no-nonsense approach defensively with a fierce Trai Hume tackle kickstarting the move, Le Bris’ men also showed off their quality in attack with the finish, after Mundle left various Luton shirts in the dust before hammering home the goal.

Now sharing seven goals between them in the Championship this season, both on-fire forwards will be crucial as matches come thick and fast, with Sunderland aspiring to stay at the top of the second-tier pile for as long as possible.

Away from both the teenage starlet and the former Tottenham Hotspur youngster picking up those all-important strikes, it was also very much a night for the defenders to shine, as Chris Mepham in particular stood firm to whatever Luton threw at him in an imperious showing.

Mepham's performance in numbers

To win promotion out of the unforgiving league that the Championship can be, Sunderland know that the entertaining attacking performances have to meet in the middle with some resolute displays at the back, with the decision to pick up the Welshman on loan from AFC Bournemouth helping them to enhance that staunchness in their game.

Starring alongside another experienced EFL head in Luke O’Nien in the centre-back spots, Sunderland could well have the makeup of a back four that knows how to shut up shop when needed, with the new Black Cats number 26 almost faultless at points at Kenilworth Road in thwarting the likes of Carlton Morris and Co.

Mepham definitely wasn’t the flashiest performer on the ball, but he more than made up for an odd wayward pass here or there with a combative display that shut out the Hatters over and over again in the second 45 minutes, winning ten of the duels that fell his way.

Moreover, the Welshman would clear the ball away from danger 11 times in total as the clock nervously ticked down, with his partner in the heart of defence in O’Nien also tremendous in that respect with six of his own clearances managed.

His manager would wax lyrical after the 2-1 win about his side’s battling spirit, with Le Bris ensuring that Mepham is picked week in week out if he keeps up these stellar displays, knowing he has a promotion up to the Premier League on his CV with the Cherries.

Winning himself an 8/10 match rating after the contest by Sunderland Echo journalist Phil Smith, who labelled his presence as key as Luton ‘bombarded’ the Black Cats, the ingredients look to be there in Le Bris’ XI to give promotion a real go.

Three points clear now at the top of the league, confidence will be sky high at the Stadium of Light, as another league win is eyed up when Oxford United come to Wearside on Saturday.

"Disastrous" – Media react to new Ilia Gruev injury as Leeds update shared

Leeds United’s injury list has grown with Ilia Gruev the latest concern, and Daniel Farke provided an update after the 1-1 Championship draw with Norwich City.

Leeds come away from Carrow Road with a point after Ramazani equaliser

The Whites faced an in-form Canaries side on Tuesday evening, looking to pick up where they left off on Saturday after a 3-0 home victory over Coventry City.

Farke was forced to make one change to the team that beat the Sky Blues, with captain Ethan Ampadu now out for 10 weeks with a knee injury. Ao Tanaka came in to partner Gruev for his first start, whereas Junior Firpo and Pascal Struijk were passed fit to keep their place in the backline.

However, in midfield, Gruev was replaced after just 20 minutes, with loanee Joe Rothwell coming on to play alongside Tanaka. At the time, Leeds were trailing after a Josh Sargent penalty, however, Largie Ramazani netted his second goal for the club on the hour mark to earn the Whites a point.

Talking after the game, Farke said as relayed by Leeds Live’s Beren Cross: “Good point on the road. Good advert for the Champ. Two in form sides. Good game. Tight game. Decisive moments are crucial. Norwich good side. Unbeaten at home.

“Two in-form teams on the pitch. We allowed one mistake in our defending over the last six games. Allowed the winger to cut inside and then tackled in the box for the penalty. Difficult here at 1-0 down. Stadium buzzing. Confident players. Not easy.

“We had chances. Gnonto hit the post. Unlucky we were back at half-time. Encouraged them to keep going. Not the easiest time. Injuries. Another important player out of the game. Played with a new centre. Praise my lads. Rothwell’s first start in a long time. We had the edge to win the game. Bogle great chance. Aaronson great chance. Penalty against Gnonto. Close to three points, but Norwich in form. Sainz and Sargent. Open game. Basketball game. Both teams can live with this point.”

Ilia Gruev injury update shared by Farke

A main talking point from the evening was Gruev’s injury, with Leeds United reporters reacting to the issue for the Bulgaria international. Cross said at the time: “Gruev is going off with an injury. Rothwell coming on. Quite possibly the worst injury they could have picked up tonight.”

Meanwhile, The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth added: “Gruev is down again, in need of more treatment. Rothwell is getting stripped off. Nothing short of disastrous.”

Farke admitted after that the problem sustained by Gruev doesn’t look good and it will require further assessment on Wednesday.

This is far from ideal for Leeds, who now are down to just two fit central midfielders in Tanaka and Rothwell and two available senior central defenders in Joe Rodon and Struijk. Gruev could now join the likes of Ampadu, Dan James, Manor Solomon and Max Wober on the sidelines, highlighting Leeds’ lack of depth in midfield and at the back.

David Lloyd, Sam Northeast build platform to edge Glamorgan in front

Glamorgan edged into a first-innings lead of 52 over Nottinghamshire on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Trent Bridge after a ninth-wicket partnership of 106 between Timm van der Gugten and James Weighell helped the visitors finish the day on 354 for 9.Despite half-centuries from skipper David Lloyd and former Kent captain Sam Northeast, who made an impressively dogged 85, Glamorgan had slipped to 248 for 8 just after tea, still 54 behind.Lloyd, who was caught off a no-ball before he had scored on the first evening, shared a third-wicket stand of 117 with Northeast but Glamorgan lost their next six wickets for 85 and seemed to have squandered a good platform. However, with Netherlands international van der Gugten unbeaten on 56 they finished the day not only with four batting bonus points but a clear advantage at the halfway stage of the match.Brett Hutton, who removed Australian Test star Marnus Labuschagne for just 3, dismissed Lloyd for 76. Northeast, one of the most accomplished county players without an England cap, looked set for a 26th career first-class century before falling to the ball of the day from South African seamer Dane Paterson.Glamorgan, 33 without loss overnight, suffered two setbacks in the first five overs of the morning, in which James Pattinson registered the first wicket of his third spell with Nottinghamshire when he had Andrew Salter caught at first slip. His dismissal ushered in Labuschagne for his first bat of the season but the anticipated duel between the world No. 1 Test batter and his former Australia team-mate Pattinson did not materialise. Instead, Pattinson’s new-ball partner Hutton dismissed Labuschagne at the first attempt with a ball he felt safe to leave but which nipped back enough to strike him on the knee roll, plumb in front.Lloyd and Northeast weathered the storm not only to guide the visitors to lunch at 130 for 2 but to extend their partnership into the afternoon before Hutton drew Lloyd into a stroke that he edged to second slip. Ben Duckett, the fielder denied by Pattinson’s overstepping when Lloyd survived on the first evening, took the catch.Northeast, who played two matches on loan for Nottinghamshire last season at the end of his four years at Hampshire, lost more partners as young seamer Joey Evison struck in consecutive overs, removing Kiran Carlson and Chris Cooke with almost identical deliveries, both finding a thin outside edge through to wicketkeeper Tom Moores. As Callum Taylor flashed at a ball from Dane Paterson to be caught at first slip, the balance was tipping towards Nottinghamshire, more so immediately after tea as Michael Neser was bowled off an inside edge by Evison. In the next over, Paterson threaded a beauty through a narrow gap between bat and pad to bowl a bemused Northeast, who had barely erred in four and a half hours at the crease.Nottinghamshire looked good for the first-innings lead but let their opponents off the hook as Weighell and van der Gugten punished Pattinson in particular. Pattinson finished with undistinguished figures of 1 for 105 from 25 overs, only the sixth time in his career he has conceded more than 100 runs in an innings, with left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White taking the last wicket of the day as Weighell was caught behind for 45.

Specialists set to confirm months out injured for £40k-a-week Ipswich star

da realsbet: Ipswich Town return to Premier League action on Saturday when they welcome fellow strugglers Everton to Portman Road. The two sides are separated by just one place and one point in the top flight, with Everton sitting in 16th and Ipswich 17th.

da 888: When it comes to Premier League survival, beating those around you is always key. But if Kieran McKenna’s side are to triumph over the Toffees, they’ll have to do it without a number of their key players.

Midfield duo Jens Cajuste and Massimo Luongo are both ruled out for the game, with the latter having picked up an injury in Ipswich’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last month, while Republic of Ireland defender Dara O’Shea is also a doubt.

“Jens is not fit yet, but will hopefully train with the group next week,” McKenna told the press ahead of Saturday’s match, according to the East Anglian Daily Times. “Massimo picked up an injury in the Aston Villa game, so he’s also unavailable for this game and probably the next period of games. “We also have some other issues that we’re assessing currently.”

McKenna gives Tuanzebe update

Among those other issues that McKenna has is the fitness of defender Axel Tuanzebe. The 26-year-old defender, who earns £40,000-per-week at Portman Road, missed Ipswich’s 4-1 defeat at West Ham earlier this month with a cut to his hand, which he sustained from breaking a glass while washing up.

“It’s a household accident, very, very unfortunate and very, very serious. He was very close to losing his thumb,” said McKenna. “He’s had surgery to repair the tendons in the thumb that was damaged, I think the recovery is going pretty well, but it’s a long-term injury.”

On just how long the defender will be out, McKenna said he doesn’t know: “The timescale is not definite. It could be a few months, maybe less if the recovery goes well,” he explained. “That’s something we’re still in dialogue with specialists about.”

Tuanzebe has found a home at Ipswich

Tuanzebe’s career to date has been somewhat of a rollercoaster. Once considered one of the brightest talents in Manchester United’s academy, the defender spent most of his Old Trafford career out on-loan in spells with Aston Villa, Napoli, and Stoke City.

He joined Ipswich on a permanent one-year deal in the summer of 2023, however, which was later extended after an impressive debut season for the Tractor Boys in which he helped them gain promotion to the Premier League.

Move over Delap: Ipswich could have their very own Duran in "unreal" star

Kieran McKenna could have his very own Jhon Duran in this Ipswich Town attacker.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 17, 2024

This season, before succumbing to injury, he was a regular fixture in the heart Ipswich’s defence, starting all six of the club’s first six Premier League games.

“He’s got stronger and stronger,” McKenna said of the former United player after his side’s goalless draw with Brighton last month. “He finished last season really, really well. He’s stepped into the Premier League this season and he’s showing his qualities.”

McKenna added: “With him and Ben [Johnson], we’re really, really strong in that position.”

USMNT Transfers: Gio Reyna's Borussia Dortmund conundrum, Juventus' Tim Weah linked with Everton among others

The USMNT Transfer Notebook tracks American player movements, with latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool

We're nearing the home stretch of the January transfer window. By this time next week, is should be clear where things are going – or in some cases, aren't going.

That applies to the U.S. men's national team players, as well. While a few deals have materialized, there are still open questions. Clubs often leave it for late in January, which means an inevitable crescendo at the end of the month. Or maybe not. Sometimes these big deals don't come together until summer.

Ricardo Pepi is still at PSV, and it may remain that way if Earnie Stewart is to be believed. It's been all quiet around him, but there has been some chatter centering around several of his USMNT teammates. Gio Reyna is the major one, and all eyes are on him over this final stretch of the transfer window. Speculation surrounds several other USMNT stars, as well.

Dortmund struggling to sort Reyna situation

Regardless of whether Gio Reyna stays or goes, the road to and through this January transfer window hasn't been ideal. On one hand, Borussia Dortmund are reportedly holding out for a larger fee – up to $18M – for their young attacker. On the other hand, that young attacker isn't getting more than a few minutes each week to actually prove why he's worth that fee.

Reyna's transfer value is nowhere near what it was just two years ago. Part of that is due to injuries. Part of it is also due to Dortmund's handling of the young American, who has gone from the newest crown jewel to a continuous transfer rumor. At one point, Reyna looked to be the next player to seize the spot left by Christian Pulisic, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham.

Instead, he's now at a crossroads, and it's at least partly because he's never been given the reins. Has he failed to seize them by force or has Dortmund been unwilling to hand them over? That's up for interpretation. What isn't, though, is that this isn't anywhere near where we thought Reyna would be at this point in his career.

On Tuesday, Reyna helped Dortmund build a 1-0 lead, but saw his team unravel while on the bench in the final 26 minutes of the club's 2-1 loss in the Champions League group stage to Bologna. Reyna had a solid but not specular showing in his 64 minutes, connecting on 93.8 percent of his passes. The loss had bigger reverberations, as Nuri Sahin's stay as manager of the German side ended a little over six months – the club formally parted ways with him after the defeat. Could a coaching change make a difference for Reyna?

Or could AC Milan be the lifeline he needs? Reports say the Italian club is interested, having been that lifeline for plenty of good-but-not-yet-great players. Maybe that'll be the case for Reyna, who has all the potential but hasn't played enough to even show how good he is.

Weah linked to Everton, but does it make sense?

It's the type of rumor that shows the power of Premier League money. Tim Weah, who has a fairly regular role at an Italian behemoth like Juventus, is being linked to Everton, a team that has been flirting with relegation for several years. Those Premier League pounds sure have weight, but it doesn't seem like it'll be enough weight to sway Weah. Nor should it.

According to CalcioMercato, Everton are among the clubs interested in signing Weah. So, too, are RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfur. The two German clubs would make a little bit more sense given their Champions League hopes and ambitions. Everton, though? They're four points clear of relegation. Weah doesn't need to jump into all of that.

Realistically, though, it's hard to see why Weah should leave Juventus. Playing time hasn't always been consistent, but that's largely been due to injury. When healthy, Weah has been a contributor, with his most recent contribution coming in the massive win over AC Milan last Saturday. Weah is playing and scoring for one of the world's biggest teams. Why would any player want to leave that?

It's hard to see Weah moving, at least not for a while. Juve have given him no reason to. The USMNT winger is a in a good spot and, once you find one of those, you have to make sure to not let it go.

    McGlynn's moment coming soon?

Shortly after putting in a clear Man of the Match performance for the USMNT in their 3-1 win over Venezuela last Saturday, Jack McGlynn was asked about a potential move to Europe.

“Yeah, there's interest, so I'm not sure what's going to happen, it's not in my hands, but wherever I'll be, I’ll be 100 percent focused," he said. "I definitely back myself to play anywhere and a goal of mine is definitely to play in Europe.”

Shortly after, GiveMeSport reported that the Union haven't yet received an offer for their young midfield star. There might be some coming, though, particularly if he turns in performances like Sunday's, which included a stunner of a goal.

McGlynn has one very important thing going for him: he's absolutely elite at one important facet of the game. The midfielder is an incredible passer of the ball and, sometimes, those passes can fly into the top corner, too. His goal against Venezuela was proof. If he can add goals like that to his game more consistently? Game-changer.

The 21-year-old midfielder already has more than 100 professional appearances under his belt, so this is nothing new. He's been great with the Union and showed out at the Olympics last summer, too. It's only a matter of time before someone comes knocking, and it'll be fun to see how hard they'll have to knock to get the Union's attention.

Wiley reutns to Chelsea… what next?

Caleb Wiley is returning to Chelsea, in part due to some financial shenanigans. Chelsea are buying and loaning Mamadou Sarr right back to Strasbourg. Clubs are only allowed to have three players on loan at a given club and, with Sarr, that makesit three between those two teams. Someone had to come back. That someone is Wiley.

That isn't a reflection on Wiley or his level, mind you. The former Atlanta United star started well with the French club, even providing an assist against Lyon back in August. Injuries, though, hit him hard. He suffered a knee injury back in September that kept him out for a month. More recently, a shoulder injury led to an extended absence. Chelsea needed to call someone back and tend to prefer their loan players doing rehab back at the club so, in many ways, this all checks out.

Still, Wiley's next step is a little bit of a mystery. Reported timelines have him coming back sometime in February, which complicates a potential loan situation. Maybe he gets a loan somewhere in England. Maybe he stays at Chelsea and pushes for minutes while continuing to train with the first team. At the moment, though, Wiley needs to get healthy, and he's going to do that at Chelsea.

Beer snakes and fried sausages

Add up to a good day out watching Test cricket at Newlands

Samantha Smith04-Jan-2015Choice of game
I can’t remember the last time I missed an international game at Newlands. In fact, I would probably attend a dead rubber between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh with as much vigour as an Ashes contest. It is thus safe to say that my attendance at the New Year’s Test, the marquee event in the South African cricketing calendar, is an unequivocal certainty.Team supported
South Africa. I’ve supported the Proteas ever since I watched Lance Klusener decimate bowling attacks in the 1999 World Cup. The prospect of supporting another team is a reality I do not wish to fathom.Key performer
It was a relatively slow-paced day of Test cricket with no single outstanding performance. However, Faf du Plessis’ solid knock of 68 helped place South Africa in a dominant position. He constructed two half-century partnerships with Alviro Petersen and Hashim Amla, respectively. He looked poised for a big score but was convincingly stumped off the bowling of a persistent Sulieman Benn in the 50th over. One thing I’d have changed about the match
I would have liked to have seen Alviro Petersen score a ton. He seems to have an ongoing relationship with the 17-30 run bracket. It is a relationship predominantly characterised by the odd single-digit score, a career-saving fifty and poor shot selection. Nevertheless it was good to see that he has found love with a relatively well-constructed 42. It’s just a pity he couldn’t covert a start into something more substantial. The interplay I enjoyed
I relished the short-lived morning contest between a set Jermaine Blackwood and the always fiery Dale Steyn. Steyn persisted with bowling fuller deliveries predominantly around off stump, was put away for four, guided for twos and then succeeded in his second over of the day trapping the middle-order batsman LBW for 56.Wow moment
Today it was the crowd and not the cricket that generated the most entertainment. A beer snake created using plastic beer cups, held up by more than two dozen spectators and spanning almost three blocks of the popular North Stand, caught the attention of the cameramen, fellow spectators and even the cricketers. In true competitive fashion, the guys in the Railway Stand attempted to better their North Stand counterparts by joining two smaller snakes into one large anaconda of beer cups. Not to be outdone, the gentlemen in the North Stand constructed an even larger snake with the help of some eager, shirtless patrons from the Oaks embankment. For a glorious few minutes, the two groups chanted high-spirited victory songs across the field. The ideal ending would have seen a chain of plastic cups long enough to span the perimeter of the ground. Alas, it was not to be as both beer snakes collapsed without much fanfare. I’m just guessing here, but it probably had something to do with the growing presence of orange-vested security marshals perturbed by gestures of light-hearted fun. Party poopers.Close encounter
My friend and I were seated directly adjacent to the West Indies dressing room. Animated youngsters and enthusiastic adult fans lined the steps leading to the change room vying for autographs, selfies and small talk. Marlon Samuels and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were in particular demand.Shot of the day
Amla’s perfectly timed cover drive off Shannon Gabriel in the 53rd over was simply magnificent. He just keeps getting better and better.Crowd meter
As to be expected, a very healthy number of supporters turned up for day two. The Oaks grass embankment and the Snake Pit were customarily full an hour before play started. Despite cooler weather, most supporters opted for shaded seats – whether they had purchased tickets in these areas or not! The Newlands faithful duly celebrated every boundary scored by the West Indies batsmen, but reserved the most rapturous applause for AB de Villiers as he made his way to the crease.Fancy dress index
On the odd occasion, a plethora of supporters bring new meaning to “dressing up for the cricket”. While the snazzy folks in the corporate suites opt for suits, ties and pencil skirts, some prefer a different style. “Sunfoil Saturday” has become synonymous with fancy dress. Today, the theme was “Caribbean flavour”. Some took the safer route and adorned West Indies shirts and brightly coloured tops. The more adventurous came dressed as teddie bears, transvestite ballerinas, a pilot, a duo of sailors, a peculiar fairy and Mr and Mrs. AB de Villiers. You’d be forgiven for wondering how any of these costumes are Calypso-themed.Entertainment
During the lunch break, up-and-coming Proteas bowler Kagiso Rabada adjudged a gentleman in a multi-coloured shirt, bright yellow trousers and blue shoes complete with realistic braids and a Rastafarian beanie as “best dressed”. He walked away with a cash prize and adoring applause from the folks on the grass embankments.Tests v limited-overs
In truth, there is simply no comparison between the different formats of this spectacular game. One’s preference for a particular format will depend entirely on one’s time, patience levels and which elements of the game one enjoys. Personally, I view a T20 as a happy meal from a fast food joint, an ODI as a filling lunch from a family restaurant, and a Test match as a three-course meal from a five-star establishment.Accessories
I make an effort to secure seats in the lower section of Upper Block K in President’s Pavilion. With a view that looks straight onto the pitch, it’s arguably the best place to sit at Newlands. The only downside is that the smell of burning oil, garlic and fried sausages from the stalls located behind the Pavilion wafts through the Stands with great regularity. However, those who are fans of that strong combination of scents can thank me later for my seating recommendations.Banner of the day
There were a host of placards on show today. Many expressed a love for AB de Villiers, one referenced the similarity between Chanderpaul’s name to the slang word “chunder”, and another simply stated that South Africa are the world’s best Test side. However, the funniest banner, complete with a photo of its subject, read “Alviro Petersen, 34: Wanted for scoring no runs”. It would have probably been even more effective had the beleaguered opener been dismissed cheaply. Nevertheless, it certainly reflects the public’s dissatisfaction with Petersen’s lack of runs this past year.Marks out of 10
7.5. An enjoyable day at the cricket punctuated with outstanding entertainment, humourous costumes and a lively crowd. Bring on day three!

Against an opposition that consigned them to a heartbreaking loss in the semi-final in Bristol five years ago, South Africa bore the brunt of slipshod fielding. Five dropped catches off Wyatt alone meant the England opener got lifelines on 22, 36, 77, 116 and 117 en route to her maiden World Cup century.Wyatt’s fifth-wicket stand with Dunkley steered England to the second-highest total in a 50-over World Cup knockout game after South Africa sent them in in slightly overcast and windy conditions at the Hagley Oval. Dunkley, who scripted a match-winning rescue act with a fifty in England’s final league-stage game on Sunday, compiled a confident 72-ball 60 before Ecclestone carted three back-to-back fours off Shabnim Ismail in the 50th over during her 11-ball 24 at No. 8.South Africa started off reasonably well in their new-ball burst on a fresh surface which had a fair amount of bounce, carry and movement. A well-directed outswinger from Marizanne Kapp had opener Tammy Beaumont edge to keeper Trisha Chetty in the fourth over.Masabata Klaas created an opportunity off the first ball of her spell. Wyatt leaned in and offered a thick edge to first-slip Lizelle Lee, who couldn’t hold on to a low catch and the ball raced away for four. Wyatt bludgeoned an authoritative cover drive one ball later and England finished the powerplay on 44 for 1.Captain Heather Knight, who scratched her way to a 19-ball 1, was then adjudged lbw via the DRS off an Ayabonga Khaka inswinger. Nat Sciver initially proved up to the task of keeping up the tempo when she joined Wyatt in the 13th over. But her stay was cut short to an 18-ball 15 as Ismail picked up the first of her three wickets, with a bouncer, reducing England to 77 for 3.Danni Wyatt scored 129 after surviving five dropped catches•ICC via Getty ImagesWyatt responded to South Africa’s ploy aimed at targeting one of her strong suits with aplomb, early in her innings. Their quicks sent down a barrage of short-and-wide deliveries, backed up with a well-patrolled arc between extra-cover and backward point. But it didn’t deter Wyatt from unleashing the cut at will, her most productive shot on the day, which fetched her 34 runs. With No. 5 Amy Jones, she led a sizeable rebuild, their 51-ball 49 stand taking England past 125 inside 26 overs. Striking at over 90 for the best part of the innings helped Wyatt ensure England’s run rate was never quite a concern in batting-friendly conditions, though the regular loss of wickets was. After Chloe Tryon took an agile catch running back to dismiss Jones for 28 off 32, Dunkley superbly complemented Wyatt, who reached her half-century off 56 balls and her hundred with a single off the 97th delivery of her innings. The England dressing room lauded her effort with a standing ovation as Wyatt raised her fist upon reaching the milestone. When she was dismissed in the 45th over, congratulatory pats on the England opener’s back and handshakes from the South Africans came thick and fast.England rounded out a supercharged performance with the bat with 75 runs in their final 10 overs. It wasn’t long before Shrubsole, who hit the winning runs against South Africa in the 2017 World Cup semi-final and was the Player of the Final in that edition, further swung the game their way. She took a return catch to remove Laura Wolvaardt, the leading run-getter of this World Cup, for a duck off the second ball of her spell and had the other opener, Lee, caught by Sciver in the next over.Sophie Ecclestone gestures after dismissing Shabnim Ismail•Getty ImagesOn a belter of a surface that had plenty for the quicks to capitalise on early, Kate Cross was the next to strike, bowling captain Sune Luus, who was making her 100th ODI appearance alongside Lee, through her defences. It was largely an Ecclestone show thereafter as the ODI No. 1 bowler ran through the middle and lower order with wily variations. The top-score from the South African line-up was 30. With seven wickets down inside 30 overs, even a miracle seemed unlikely to avert a second elimination at the hands of England in a World Cup knockout.Either side of completing her maiden international five-for, Ecclestone sent Ismail off with a finger-on-the-lip celebration and had Jones stump Chetty for her sixth wicket. For a team that became the first in women’s ODI World Cup history to make the final after three consecutive defeats at the start of their campaign, it was fitting that England’s win marked the first-ever women’s ODI to feature a century and a six-wicket-haul.
