Ishant Sharma’s effective use of the full delivery and Joe Root continuing with his Mumbai mindset were among Aakash Chopra’s insights from Chepauk
Aakash Chopra16-Dec-2016Black soil means slow turn The pitch at Chepauk for this game is made of black soil and therefore it should be expected to get slower as the match progresses. The square at Chepauk has two different kinds of pitches – a couple with red soil and a few with black soil. The former is used whenever a rank turner is the requirement (mostly in Ranji games) and the latter for a typical Indian surface that turns but not viciously. The toss is important but not as important as it was at Wankhede – where England managed to squander that advantage.Importance of the full ball The new SG ball rarely swings and there’s little lateral movement off the pitch in India. The only thing a fast bowler plays with is the marginal change of lines and length, and the early skepticism of openers. In the sixth over, Ishant Sharma bowled a full, wide ball luring Keaton Jennings into a big booming drive. Openers are so focused on balls pitching in the good-length area that, at times, they are caught unawares by the full ball. In any case, Jennings’ weight is on the back foot in the initial stages of his innings and is therefore always a little late on his shots.Root starts where he left off in Mumbai Batting is a lot about the mind space that you’re in and Joe Root has shown how it dictates your response. Root wasn’t a happy sweeper in the early part of this Test series, definitely not in the early part of the innings but it changed in the second innings of the fourth Test. The pitch at Wankhede forced Root to sweep right from the beginning, for that was the only way to survive on a wilting pitch. In Chepauk, he picked up where left off in Mumbai, sweeping Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra fairly early in his innings. It must be said that the first-day pitch at Chepauk isn’t half as alarming, although, in the end, Root was dismissed sweeping at Jadeja.Ashwin’s drift and dip The first ball of the 27th over, bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin, drifted away in the air and went straight on with the arm, to which Root defended on the front foot. The following ball drifted in to which Root stepped out, only to see it dipping a foot shorter. These two deliveries showcased the deception Ashwin creates in the air.Tough call The idea of staying with the umpire’s call on DRS is to discourage players from marginal reviews and to maintain the sanctity of the on-field umpire. To an extent, it’s also an acknowledgment of technology not being 100% accurate. While this does make sense, one wonders why the team should be penalised for it. Mishra appealed for a leg-before against Moeen Ali and, while the ball hit the pads in front of the wicket, Hawk-Eye’s projection showed that it would have just clipped leg stump instead of hitting it fully. Now, that can’t be considered a bad review and therefore it is a little unfair to penalise India for it, as losing a review might mean an umpiring howler later in the innings going uncorrected.Bairstow’s driving lesson Jonny Bairstow played an English shot on an Indian pitch. He tried to drive one on the up and hit it straight to the fielder placed for the catch in the covers. If you want to play along the ground off the front foot, you must get to the pitch of the ball, because every now and then it will either stop or turn more than expected. Moeen played in an almost identical manner but fortunately none of his shots went close to the India fielders.Seam bowlers’ beehive to Moeen Ali•ESPNcricinfo Ltd(Lack of) bouncers to Moeen Ishant dimissed Moeen with a bouncer at Lord’s in 2014. Mohammed Shami dismissed Moeen with a bouncer in Mohali two weeks ago. Considering these facts you are almost sure that there will be bouncers the moment he walks out to bat. Therefore it was surprising to see so few bowled to him on the first day of the Chennai Test.
South Australia, who went down by 177 runs, are not out of the race for the final yet
AAP22-Feb-2023Victoria claimed a thumping 177-run win over South Australia inside three days to move a step closer to a spot in next month’s Sheffield Shield final.South Australia had few answers with the bat in pursuit of an unlikely 368 to win, and were bowled out for 190 just after the scheduled tea break at Junction Oval on Wednesday. Mitchell Perry, the 22-year-old fast bowler, continued his consistent form with career-best figures of 5 for 64.Related
Taking the aggressive route key to Sutherland's breakout season
Fergus O’Neill (2 for 3) claimed two top-order wickets but it wasn’t all good news for him, with the rookie quick forced from the field after delivering just 3.3 overs.South Australia’s hopes were extinguished to a large extent inside an hour at the crease after slipping to 27 for 4. The only serious resistance came from Daniel Drew (38) and Benjamin Manenti (82), who combined for a defiant 96-run stand for the fifth wicket.Victoria captain Will Sutherland secured the key wicket of Drew, who had scored a double-century against leaders Western Australia last week, with a sharp catch taken at short mid-on by Campbell Kellaway.Manenti again stated his case to be considered an allrounder with a crunching 82 off just 96 balls – a second half century in as many matches – before Perry removed him for his third wicket of the innings.Matt Short was the only batter to do well on a tricky pitch•Getty ImagesWhile the impact of other ongoing matches is yet to be determined, the win lifted Victoria into outright second with two rounds remaining. It was a second one-sided win for Victoria in a row under acting captain Sutherland. While Perry enjoyed the spoils on the final day, the victory was set up by Matthew Short’s batting in both innings. Short hit 70 in the first innings – the only half-century for either team in the first-innings exchanges – and followed that up with 119 in the second dig, his maiden Shield century.Short’s run-scoring was all the more meritorious on a challenging Junction Oval pitch, where 22 wickets fell during the first four sessions of the match. The match also marked the return of veteran international Glenn Maxwell after a three-month absence from the game with a broken leg. Maxwell, who only returned to the game on the weekend in grade cricket, scored just five runs in the first innings and then a second-ball duck in the second innings.Despite the heavy defeat, South Australia’s hopes are still intact; they are one win in arrears of Victoria ahead of concluding matches against Queensland and New South Wales.

Dunkley, Jones knocks in vain for England as Australia go 6-0 up in series
Valkerie Baynes01-Jul-2023An unbeaten half-century by cool-as-you-like opener Beth Mooney saw Australia to victory with one ball to spare in a thrilling first T20I against England in front of a crowd of 19,527 at Edgbaston. The Australians maintained their reputation for withstanding pressure, embodied by Mooney’s 61 not out off 47 balls in the face of wickets to Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone in the last two overs of the match, to go six points up in their multi-format series and leave England needing to win all five remaining matches if they are to wrest back the Ashes. Annabel Sutherland struck two crucial boundaries and Mooney one, with Australia needing 16 runs off the last two overs. Georgia Wareham managed to hit the first ball she faced for the winning run.Related
Ladies who Switch:Annabel Sutherland interview
A half-century from Sophia Dunkley and Amy Jones’ quickfire 40 gave England something to defend and they almost pulled off a coup, as Ecclestone, Bell and Sarah Glenn picked up two wickets each. Despite Dunkley’s fifty and an assertive 29 off 22 balls by Heather Knight – the pair putting on a 55-run stand for the fourth wicket – England were in a hole with the bat. Their 36 for 2 after six overs was their lowest T20I powerplay in 12 innings and no other batter reached double figures, after Jones.
Jones lifts England
Dunkley started at a strong tempo, scoring seven of the eight runs which came off the first over of the match, bowled by Megan Schutt – who was back in action after being overlooked for the Test, which Australia won to take a four-point lead into this match. The Australians were left confounded when Danni Wyatt drove at Darcie Brown and missed, the ball hitting off stump which visibly wobbled but the bails didn’t dislodge. But there was no more fortune for Wyatt when she attempted to loft Schutt over extra cover and missed again as the ball gripped off the surface, pinging off stump out of the ground. Alice Capsey and Nat Sciver-Brunt fell cheaply, Capsey when her bat bounced up off the pitch when she tried to return to her crease as Brown gathered off her own bowling and threw down the stumps at the striker’s end.Dunkley brought up her fifty off 42 balls but then Tahlia McGrath broke through in her first over with a slower, fuller ball which Knight sent straight to long-on and Jones entered the fray, and rode her luck. On 3, she struck the ball just short of backward point and set off, bowler Jess Jonassen failing to take the throw cleanly for what would have been a run out. Three balls later, Jones overturned an lbw decision when replays showed she had got bat on ball. Jones also survived on 15 when she was dropped by Wareham, running in from deep midwicket. But Jones’ ball-striking was decisive and she capitalised on those errors, lofting Schutt over Wareham’s head for six straight after her let-off, then whacking four off the last ball over the covers to take 18 from the over. Jones sealed her 40 off just 21 balls when she heaved Ashleigh Gardner over deep midwicket for six off the last ball of the innings.Amy Jones’ quickfire 40 lifted England at the death•Getty Images
Two in two times three feat. Schutt, Jonassen and Glenn
Schutt returned to the attack and made a breakthrough for Australia, removing Dunkley who was trying to swing big to the leg side and sent a leading edge to Brown at short third. Schutt was then on a hat-trick, having had Sciver-Brunt caught by Wareham running in from deep midwicket on the last ball of her previous spell. But Danielle Gibson, on her international debut, managed to play the ball late to the off side safely.Jonassen also claimed two wickets in two balls after Gibson edged to McGrath at extra cover to fall for just 1 and Alyssa Healy caught Ecclestone down the leg side, Jonassen ultimately finishing with 3 for 25 to be the pick of Australia’s bowlers.Later, legspinner Glenn gave England a sniff late in Australia’s innings when she had Gardner caught behind by Jones and then bowled the big-hitting Grace Harris for a first-ball duck with a slower one that turned into the batter who edged onto her stumps.
Mooney sees through dramatic chase
Silence descended on the crowd as Glenn sat under a steepling catch to remove Healy for 5 off seamer Bell and they erupted as she held it at backward point. Jones kept herself in the action with the stumping of McGrath, who had been accumulating nicely at 40 off 28 balls, off Ecclestone. In the 13th over, Australia were level with where England had been and needed to score at more than eight runs an over.Gardner skied the ball so high back above bowler Bell’s head she struggled to pick it out on descent and didn’t end up getting close. Next ball, Mooney managed to turn a full ball off her pads past short fine leg to bring up her fifty. But then Glenn removed Gardner and Harris and all of a sudden Australia were under pressure, even more so when Bell rattled Ellyse Perry’s off stump.Sutherland sent Bell to the square-leg boundary to ease the tension and Mooney then hit Bell’s last delivery up and over the covers to the rope, leaving Australia with just five to get off the last over. Sutherland drove Ecclestone’s first ball straight down the ground for four but then skied to Jones with two balls remaining. Wareham, however, stayed calm as she punched towards cover and set off for the run Australia needed.
Wolverhampton Wanderers had enjoyed an exceptional start to life under new boss Vitor Pereira in the Premier League, up until Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest travelled to Molineux to sour the high spirits.
Indeed, the high-flying away side convincingly put the Old Gold to the sword in a 3-0 defeat, leaving Wolves precariously near the drop zone but just outside of it on goal difference.
Wolverhampton Wanderers managerVitorPereirareacts after the match
Pereira will want his side to be a lot sterner in defence in matches to come, having kept a clean sheet during his debut match away at Leicester City, only to then be turned over in worrying fashion to start 2025.
Therefore, new defensive additions are firmly on the Portuguese manager’s mind, with a number of deals reportedly in the works.
Wolves looking at new centre-back
As per a report by Daily Mail Online, Wolves are now in the hunt for reserve Chelsea defender Renato Veiga as another option to improve their numbers at the back.
AFC Bournemouth are also reportedly sniffing around from the Premier League, with Veiga perhaps fancying a move away already from Stamford Bridge due to limited game-time, despite only joining last summer.
This wouldn’t be the only new possible recruit at Wolves when it comes to defensive additions, with a deal edging ever closer for Emmanuel Agbadou to join the ranks from Rennes, alongside this fresh news that the ex-Basel man could soon join him in through the door.
After all, Pereira’s side do hold the unwanted tag of being the leakiest defence in the top flight this season, with 45 goals in total leaked, meaning fresh new improvements might well see more resolute displays moving forward.
Alongside helping out at the back, the potential acquisition of the Blues youngster could give Rayan Ait-Nouri more freedom to attack down the left, with Veiga a left-sided defender by nature who will likely sit back whilst the Algerian excels roaming forward.
What Veiga could offer Wolves
The Portuguese target would make a name for himself as a battling presence defensively playing for Basel back in the Swiss Super League, with a stunning seven ball recoveries averaged per league clash during his standout 2023/24 campaign, leading to Chelsea forking out £12m to land the exciting defender.
Of course, his opportunities in the main team in the Premier League under Enzo Maresca have been limited due to the breadth of options at the Italian’s disposal, but when he has started for his new side in the Europa Conference League, he has impressed.

His showing versus Astana shows off an adaptability in Veiga’s game that will make him an even more attractive buy for Wolves, with a goal picked up in the Conference League when playing down the channels, away from strictly being a defensive option.
Of course – in the Old Gold’s current predicament – they would like Veiga to be more of an option they can throw into the mix as one of three centre-backs, which he can also do with the majority of his appearances for Basel either coming in defensive midfield or in a more traditional centre-back position.
Playing the new potential Wolves buy here would allow Ait Nouri to prosper further up the pitch, with his link-up play often a joy to watch when he’s at full pelt, leading to him amassing eight goal contributions this season in league action from just 19 games.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
Last match, instead of causing Forest problems in this capacity, Ait Nouri was selected to play as one of three centre-backs by Pereira, culminating in Wolves drawing blanks all night long.
As such, having an addition like Veiga in the building could allow the Algerian to have the freedom to bomb on down the left flank in his preferred wing-back role, safe in the knowledge that he has quality cover behind him in the form of the current Chelsea man.
Once referred to as a “hidden gem” by football data analyst Ben Mattinson, Veiga will hope a move this January can make him become a leading man for whatever side takes him on, with Pereira hopeful this addition can provide more defensive solidity for his team during testing times.

Leeds looking for new goalkeeper
Meslier unwanted after constant mistakes
Pope a top target alongside Trafford

WHAT HAPPENED?
Meslier has become an unpopular figure at Elland Road this season after a string of mistakes in goal have cost Leeds crucial points in their hunt to return to the Premier League. As a result, the Yorkshire side are looking to upgrade their goalkeeper in the summer, with reports suggesting Pope is a top target.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Pope has been a key figure for Newcastle under Eddie Howe and recently got his first taste of silverware, winning the Carabao Cup with the Magpies. However, the 32-year-old may be allowed to leave at the end of the season with just one year left on his contract at St James' Park. Should Leeds manage to secure their spot in the top flight next term, it would be a sensible move for the England international to continue getting regular minutes and playing in the Premier League.
DID YOU KNOW?
Alongside Pope, Leeds are believed to be big admirers of James Trafford. The Burnley goalie was linked with a move to Tottenham last summer and may find himself looking for a new club if Scott Parker's men fail to gain promotion.

WHAT NEXT?
Leeds sit top of the Championship table with just three games to go. They remain level on points with Burnley but have a five-point buffer to third-placed Sheffield United. A win and a draw could be enough for Daniel Farke's side to make their anticipated return to the Premier League and get their summer transfer plans started.
Manchester United have now identified a £58m player as their priority target to replace Luke Shaw, according to a report.
Shaw's injury woes at Man Utd
Shaw has struggled with injuries throughout his Man United career, releasing a statement in which he claimed he was “absolutely devastated” by the latest setback earlier this month.
Ruben Amorim clearly thinks very highly of the left-back, given his comments not long after arriving at Old Trafford:
“What I can say since I arrived, I see him in the medical department working a lot in the gym,’ said Amorim. ‘Working a lot on the pitch, we control the load during the games, during the trainings, he was losing weight, so he was doing everything.
‘If he continues to do that behaviour, he’s a top, top player and we need him. No matter how long he will need, I will be with him, we will help him to return, not just Manchester United but your national team needs a guy like Luke Shaw, so we are here to help him.”

However, there are doubts over how long the United boss can persist with a player constantly plagued by injuries, and he has started scouring the market for replacements.
According to a report from Caught Offside, Amorim has now settled on his first-choice target, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes right at the very top of his list.
The Red Devils have made contact with Mendes’ agents to assess whether he would be keen on a move to Old Trafford, and it is believed he is pleased with the interest.
The left-back’s future in France remains uncertain, as he is not planning to sign a new contract to stay at PSG beyond 2026, despite the club’s wishes to tie him down.
Should contract extension talks fail, as expected, the French club would be willing to sanction the defender’s departure for a fee of €70m (£58m) in the summer transfer window.

Promising signs for Man Utd
It appears as though the PSG ace would potentially be interested in a move to Old Trafford, which is promising news for United, given just how impressive he has been for his current club.
The “very exciting” full-back is solid at both ends of the pitch, ranking in the 96th percentile for successful take-ons per 90, and the 79th percentile for interceptions, when compared to his positional peers over the past year.
The 22-year-old’s attacking prowess is perhaps best illustrated by his match-winning goal for PSG against Juventus in the Champions League just over two years ago:
Of course, £58m is no small sum of money, but Mendes is at the right age to be a long-term success at Old Trafford, and it is good news that he is possibly keen on a move.
Celtic are now set to make “another approach” for a superb player in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph.
Jota set for Celtic return
There continue to be plenty of transfer rumours surrounding the Hoops this month, not least when it comes to former attacking hero Jota making a return to the club.
The Portuguese is looking increasingly likely to seal a Celtic reunion, coming in from Ligue 1 side Rennes, who are on course to land Kyogo Furuhashi. It is a transfer that could be hugely popular at Parkhead, given what an influential figure he was during his first stint.
Celtic'sJotareacts
Meanwhile, another Hoops return also looks on the cards this month, with Kieran Tierney looking highly likely to come in on loan until the end of the season. He looks set to sign a pre-contract agreement that will see him join permanently in the summer transfer window.
Celtic are believed to be plotting a move for Brondby forward Mathias Kvistgaarden, too, as Brendan Rodgers looks to boost his attacking options after the disappointing exit of Kyogo.
Celtic to make "another approach" for new forward
Taking to X, Joseph claimed that Celtic are expected to make “another approach” for Kvistgaarden, as they look to strike a deal for him this month:
Kvistgaarden could be the ideal Kyogo replacement for the Hoops, with the 22-year-old an impressive young attacker with so much more to come in his career.
The Dane has scored 38 goals in 110 appearances for Brondby, while at international level, he has struck seven times in 17 caps for Denmark’s Undfer-21s. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has also described him as “superb” in the past.
If Celtic were able to bring in Kvistgaarden, Jota and Tierney before the end of deadline day on February 3rd, it would feel like an excellent window overall, even though the loss of Kyogo could hurt the reigning Scottish Premiership champions.
The Hoops need to be as strong as possible between now and the end of the campaign, not only in terms of defending their league crown, but also in order to go as far as possible in the Champions League.
