Start of a new cycle beckons after World Cup to forget for England, West Indies

The road to 2027 begins already for two teams in search of better 50-over fortunes

Andrew Miller02-Dec-2023

Big picture – Caribbean reboot

The return to action hasn’t been quite so jarringly immediate as it was for India and Australia in the wake of the World Cup final, or indeed for England’s T20 World Cup winners in Australia last winter. And, let’s face it, a four-island jaunt to the Caribbean in December is a reasonably palatable assignment after the indignities that preceded it.Nevertheless, it’s still only three weeks since Jos Buttler’s browbeaten squad limped back to Blighty with their World Cup dreams in tatters, and less than a fortnight since their four-year reign as 50-over world champions was formally ended in Ahmedabad. Whatever way you look at it, it seems a curious juncture in the global cycle to be undertaking another three-match ODI series. And to judge by the inexperienced squad lining up against them, West Indies might be in broad agreement. Not only did they miss out entirely on the World Cup just gone, having fallen short in the brutal qualifying tournament that took place in Zimbabwe in June and July, it now transpires that that failure has condemned them to onlooker status at the 2025 Champions Trophy as well. The road to 2027 will feel all the more dim and distant without that staging post to aim for.Related

Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder are among the big names who have opted out of ODIs since the qualifiers, seemingly indefinitely, while Shane Dowrich’s retirement only days after his recall – having played his one previous ODI back in 2019 – was further evidence of the format’s lowly standing within the region at present.Rovman Powell, Dominic Drakes, Kyle Mayers and Jayden Seales are among the other familiar names missing for this campaign, and while Shimron Hetmyer is back in favour with the selectors, the decision to move on from the veteran Darren Bravo feels peculiar in light of the reasons given for Hetmyer’s absence in Zimbabwe. Though he is already 34, and therefore unlikely to feature in 2027, Bravo was still the leading run-scorer in this year’s Super50 Cup, as he captained Trinidad and Tobago to victory in the final. In the bigger picture, it feels there’ll be significantly more at stake for these two teams come the T20I leg of the tour later in the month, when the narrative shifts from two World Cup also-rans to a clash of the defending champions versus the impending hosts of the 2024 tournament next June. Nevertheless, all revivals have to have a starting point, and in the 50-over stakes, that begins at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Sunday afternoon. From England’s perspective, it’s a shot to nothing. A chance for a cast of talented fringe players to impress their captain (and indisputable white-ball GOAT, notwithstanding his recent struggles) Buttler, and make the case for a 2015-style cleaning-out of the stables – even if Ben Duckett, one of the players with most to gain in the coming weeks, has played down the likelihood that any long-term places are up for grabs in the coming days.As for West Indies, at least it’s a return to the fray after their telling absence in the months just gone. Financially, if not necessarily competitively, England’s visit – and moreover the hordes of supporters that are sure to accompany them – offer significant compensation for the recent dents in their coffers. And besides, it’s cricket in the Caribbean with Christmas drawing nigh. What’s not to enjoy?

West Indies LWLLW
England WWLLL

In the spotlight – Shimron Hetmyer and Will Jacks

There are a fair few players with a point to prove in this series, but Shimron Hetmyer’s back-story takes some beating. He’s been powerless to influence not one, but two recent World Cup campaigns. In 2022, he was axed on the eve of West Indies’ T20 World Cup campaign after missing a connecting flight to New York, then last summer, he was overlooked for the ODI qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe because the selectors decided to stick with the players who had made their mark on the tour of South Africa earlier that year … and we all know how that decision panned out. Never mind that Hetmyer’s absence had been due to his forceful displays for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, or that in 2019, on his previous ODI tour of India (the venue for the World Cup that West Indies missed) his fifth and most recent century had helped to secure a startling eight-wicket win in Chennai. He’ll no doubt be eager to make up for that lost time.Of all the England players who might believe their time has come, few have a better case than Will Jacks. As a hard-hitting opener for Surrey and Oval Invincibles, he had been outshining the mighty Jason Roy at a domestic level long before the selectors decided that Roy’s lock on a World Cup place was untenable. Jacks wasn’t awarded a central contract in the recent round of deals, but that fact has the potential to work in his favour at this early juncture – with nothing to lose, he has everything to win next time out if he can set about making a long-term case. And to judge by his forceful 94 from 88 balls against Ireland in September, he offers an unfettered attitude to top-order strokeplay that wasn’t adequately replicated in Roy’s absence last month.

Team news – Rookies to the fore

Bravo may have been a notable omission but his Trinidad and Tobago team-mate Kjorn Ottley – only a year younger at 33 – is back in favour for the first time in three years and looks set to open alongside Brandon King. Shai Hope, the captain and wicketkeeper, is by some distance the most experienced man in their ranks, although Hetmyer, Alzarri Joseph and Oshane Thomas offer a decent spine to a side that could feature two new ODI caps, including the talented allrounder Matthew Forde, 21, who impressed for the Academy side in the Super50 Cup.West Indies (probable): 1 Brandon King, 2 Kjorn Ottley, 3 Alick Athanaze, 4 Shai Hope (capt, wk), 5 Keacy Carty, 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Sherfane Rutherford, 8 Yannic Cariah, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Matthew Forde / Gudakesh Motie, 11 Oshane ThomasAll change for England after their World Cup catastrophe, although how much of it will be permanent remains to be seen. For now, only Jos Buttler remains from the class of 2019, but with the ink still drying on a host of multi-year ECB contracts – including for the likes of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Mark Wood and Adil Rashid – you’d suspect one or two of the old guard aren’t quite done yet. That said, there ought to be at least seven names in this opening XI who played no part in the tournament just gone, including the same top three who finished the series against Ireland – Will Jacks, Phil Salt and Zak Crawley – and potentially a spot for the Lancashire left-arm spinner, Tom Hartley.England (probable): 1 Will Jacks, 2 Phil Salt, 3 Zak Crawley, 4 Harry Brook, 5 Ben Duckett, 6 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 7 Sam Curran, 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Rehan Ahmed, 10 Tom Hartley, 11 Gus Atkinson.

Pitch and conditions

No major damage has been reported after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake in the early hours of Saturday morning in Antigua, so there’s no suggestion that the match will be affected. The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is not traditionally the most high-scoring of Caribbean venues, with just three scores in excess of 300 in 20 previous matches, and none higher than the 322 for 6 posted by Ricky Ponting’s all-time-great Australia in the venue’s maiden fixture during the 2007 World Cup. It’s been an intermittent host for ODIs in recent years, however, with just three matches since 2017. Local knowledge suggests the pitch will take spin.

Stats and trivia

  • England have won 52 of their 102 previous ODIs against West Indies, against 44 losses and six no-results.
  • West Indies, however, have the edge on home soil, with 23 wins against 17 defeats since their first ODI meeting in the Caribbean in 1981.
  • England have won each of their last four ODIs at the venue, spanning their tours in 2014 and 2017, having lost their first three, including two at the 2007 World Cup.
  • England’s last series, in the lead-up to the 2019 World Cup, ended in a 2-2 draw, including a memorable match in Grenada that featured a world-record 46 sixes.
  • Jos Buttler needs 39 runs to reach 5000 in ODIs. However, he has passed that total just once in his last 12 innings.

É a mesma situação.

Wolves make first move to sign new £29m striker who could replace Cunha

With Matheus Cunha possibly heading for the exit door in the summer transfer window, Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly made contact over a potential move to sign a replacement.

Wolves transfer news

He has single-handedly dragged them away from the bottom three at times this season and still stayed put in the January transfer window, but a big move is awaiting Cunha. Whether it’s the Premier League’s top six or one of Europe’s top clubs outside of English football, the Brazilian looks destined to return to the top for the first time since a disappointing Atletico Madrid spell.

Just how Wolves replace their star man remains to be seen, but they’ll likely have £62.5m to do so if his next potential club decide to trigger his hefty release clause when the summer arrives.

All things considered, it’s looking increasingly likely that those in the Midlands are in for quite the transfer window and one that they must simply get right if they are to avoid a disaster. It’s one that they are already reportedly preparing for too, setting their sights on one potential Cunha replacement.

According to Calcio Mercato, Wolves have made contact to sign Yuri Alberto from Corinthians this summer. The Brazilian side reportedly value their striker at just €35m (£29m), handing the Molineux club the chance to spend just half of the potential fee that they could receive for Cunha in the coming months.

They’re not alone in the race for Alberto’s signature, however, with Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest also battling to welcome the 23-year-old alongside Fulham and West Ham United. Amid such interest, it’s Wolves who will hope to have new-found spending power to secure Alberto’s arrival and potentially replace star man Cunha.

"Quick" Alberto could replace Cunha

Swapping one Brazilian for another, Alberto could arrive in the Midlands and instantly pick up where Cunha potentially leaves off this summer. Although the 23-year-old has endured a slow start in the current campaign – scoring three times in 10 games – all it takes is one look at Alberto’s numbers in the previous campaign to realise just how clinical he can be.

Corinthians striker Yuri Alberto

Scoring 31 goals and assisting another seven in 57 games last season, the Corinthians star is more than ready for a move to a European club. Praised for his “quick reactions and determination” by analyst Ben Mattinson last summer, Alberto righty remains one to watch.

It would be quite the coup for Wolves if they managed to win such a busy race, but it’s crucial that they do welcome a replacement for Cunha if he does depart this summer. Just where they would be without a player of his calibre is not a question they’ll want answering.

Nottingham Forest monitoring "big-name" Serie A star who can move for £35m

Nottingham Forest chiefs are switching their attentions to the summer already, as they are now monitoring a “big-name” player in Italy, according to a recent report.

Nottingham Forest prepare for Ipswich in FA Cup

The Reds are back in action on Monday as they welcome Ipswich Town to the City Ground as they look to book their place in the final eight of the FA Cup. Forest are still firmly in the race for a top four finish this season, but with no win in their last three, their lead over the teams behind them has been shortened and a domestic cup may become their best route into Europe.

Nuno has said that he is going to need all his players between now and the end of the campaign if they are to achieve their goal of qualifying for continental competition. “We are going to need all of the players. Nobody should disconnect, and we try to make sure that everybody is involved.

Nottingham Forest managerNunoEspiritoSantobefore the match

“There’s no other way. Players must be patient, responsible, and respectful for who’s playing.”

But while the boss is focusing on his current squad, Forest’s recruitement chiefs are beginning to look ahead to the summer, as Tuttosport state that they are now plotting a move to sign Alexis Saelemaekers from AC Milan.

Newcastle United are also interested in signing the attacking midfielder, who is said to be valued at £17 million. Nuno’s side will expect to have an edge in the race if they secure Champions League football for next season.

Nottingham Forest monitoring "big-name" £35m ace

As well as looking in Serie A for Saelemaekers, Nottingham Forest are also keeping a close eye on Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi, who looks set to leave the Italian champions, according to ESPN.

The report states that Forest look to be in the market for a new midfielder for next season, and Frattesi, who won Serie A last season, has emerged on their radar. The 25-year-old was signed for around £20 million, and it is believed that Inter are willing to let him leave San Siro for a fee of £35 million.

However, Forest are not alone in their pursuit, as it’s been reported that Tottenham Hotspur have already made a bid to Inter to sign Frattesi. The Italy international, who has been dubbed a “big-name” player in Simone Inzaghi’s squad, joined Inter first on loan from Sassuolo before joining on a permanent basis in July last year.

Since joining the Serie A champions, Frattesi has been a key player for Inzaghi, playing 42 times in all competitions last season. However, he only managed 11 starts in those games, and that has continued into this campaign, starting 10 of the 32 games he has played overall.

His lack of starts means Frattesi is also probably open to a move elsewhere, and Forest could represent a good opportunity, especially if they secure Champions League football. His potential arrival would see him compete with the likes of Elliot Anderson, Danilo, Nicolas Dominquez and Ryan Yates for a starting spot in that midfield two.

Rangers have struck gold on "complete" star who is worth more than Raskin

Glasgow Rangers are heading for their worst domestic season in years. Knocked out of the Scottish Cup under Philippe Clement by Championship side Queen’s Park came just a couple of months after losing the League Cup final.

In the Premiership, the Ibrox side trail rivals Celtic by 13 points, having lost six and drawn five of their 30 league games so far this season.

Despite this underwhelming campaign, Barry Ferguson delivered two of the club’s finest moments just three days apart.

Firstly, he led the Gers to a penalty shootout victory over Fenerbahçe, leading the club to the quarter-finals of the Europa League for the first time since 2022.

Secondly, he ended their five-year Parkhead hoodoo on Sunday afternoon, with the Light Blues triumphing in the third Old Firm clash of the season, winning 3-2 courtesy of a late winner by Hamza Igamane.

When his effort hit the back of the net, it was a moment of pure inspiration, with the vast majority of the supporters forgetting all about the dismal season at that point.

The key thing now is for the players to carry this sort of form into the remaining few games, proving that the result isn’t a flash in the pan.

Several players proved their worth against Celtic, none more so than Nico Raskin.

Why Nico Raskin is captain material for Rangers

Raskin has stepped up to the plate for Rangers since making his return to the first-team squad back in September after missing the first few weeks of the season due to injury.

It looked as though Raskin would have to force his way back into the starting XI, especially as Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande were beginning to form a solid partnership in the heart of the midfield.

Since returning to full fitness, however, the Belgian has arguably been the club’s best player. Across 26 Premiership matches, Raskin has an 87% pass success rate, while also creating six big chances, making three tackles per game and winning 6.5 total duels per match – a success rate of 59% – in the league.

Nico Raskin

Against Celtic on Sunday, Raskin made sure the Gers wouldn’t return to Ibrox empty-handed. After testing Kasper Schmeichel with a fizzing shot early on, he subsequently scored from the resulting corner.

Throughout the clash, the 24-year-old dictated the game, working well with Diomande at the heart of the midfield, giving Celtic no time to create anything in the first half.

The Belgian even assisted his midfield partner for the second Rangers goal and this duo could be one to star for the Light Blues over the next few years, that’s for sure.

Raskin certainly exudes plenty of qualities that would make him a fine captain for the club, especially when James Tavernier finally leaves the club.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

It is Diomande, however, who perhaps has the attributes to be the most important player for the Ibrox side next season and beyond.

Why Diomande is worth more than Raskin

Over the past few months, both midfielders have seen their market valuations soar due to some impressive displays.

According to Transfermarkt, Raskin is now worth €6.5m (£5.5m), which is a massive rise from what the club paid to sign him in January 2023.

Mohamed Diomande

Diomande – who cost the Gers £4.5m last January – is now worth slightly more than his partner in midfield, with the Ivorian star now worth €7m (£6m), which is marginally more than Raskin.

Whoever takes over Rangers in the summer ahead of 2025/26 must utilise these two players in their best positions. If so, then the next term could be a lot different to the current one.

Diomande may have been a Jekyll and Hyde-like figure among the Ibrox faithful, with some not convinced of his talents, but his display against Celtic has certainly proved the doubters wrong.

Operating behind Cyriel Dessers in Ferguson’s 3-4-2-1 system, Diomande was given free rein to work alongside Vaclav Cerny in using his running power to have a go at the Celtic defence.

Indeed, the midfielder starlet succeeded with 100% of his dribbles, made one key pass, won four of his six ground duels contested and made two tackles, contributing whether or not his side had the ball.

He scored the second goal for Rangers with a well-taken effort, proving that he can be a key threat in the opposition penalty area.

Overall, it was a sublime performance by the 23-year-old, who has a bright future in the game. That’s a certainty.

Analyst John Walker hailed the midfielder last week, saying: “Scanning is an absolute basic in football but the regularity in which you do it is what can stop a player going beyond SPFL level.

“This basic skill-set, often overlooked, is exactly what can leave you with a 96% pass completion in a massive European tie. Add to that, calm & composed on the ball with the aggression to work off the ball and you have a pretty complete midfielder.”

When compared to his positional peers in the Europa League this season, Diomande ranks in the top 6% for pass completion percentage (82.6%) along with ranking in the top 6% for passes into the final third (4.21) and in the top 14% for tackles won (1.53) per 90.

These statistics showcase his ability to shine in European competition, which will naturally see the player attract interest from elsewhere.

This summer, a new manager will be appointed at Rangers. There are plenty of things to focus on ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, but the most important aspect will be to retain his key players.

This includes Raskin and Diomande. Another season at the club could see their market valuations continue to soar, while also allowing the Gers the perfect chance of securing significant profit on the duo.

Wilder may have inadvertently signed Sheffield United's next Oliver Burke

Whilst Chris Wilder should be rightly praised for the large array of stars he’s worked with at Sheffield United such as Billy Sharp, John Egan and Jack O’Connell, the much-celebrated Blades boss has also fallen victim to signing some real duds whilst occupying the Bramall Lane hot-seat.

Indeed, notable pick-ups such as Rhian Brewster haven’t exactly gone to plan under his wing, with the one-time £23.5m buy only bagging seven strikes from 107 games in South Yorkshire.

At least Brewster has shown spurts of his quality, however, with two of those goals coming this season.

But, with this other disastrous signing, he never managed to raise his head high concerning his underwhelming displays.

Oliver Burke: Wilder's worst signing at Sheffield United?

Coincidentally, the cursed purchase of Oliver Burke also happened around the same time Brewster arrived through the door from Liverpool, with the Blades going on to taste relegation down to the Championship off the back of their poor recruitment.

Burke joined Wilder’s ranks for £5.8m in September of 2020, with the Scotsman once a £15m purchase by ex-club West Bromwich Albion when the Baggies picked up Burke fresh off his promising exploits at boyhood club Nottingham Forest.

Oliver Burke

But, that £15m on the end of the West Midlands side would end up being a rash splurge of cash, with Burke only managing to pick up one goal from 24 appearances at the Hawthorns, a worrying trend that would continue on at his next club.

To further pile on the misery, the now 27-year-old’s blunt time at Bramall Lane would culminate in a relegation appearing on his career CV, with the goal-shy attacker picking up just two strikes and one assist from 36 forgettable clashes.

In the end, Burke would leave his ill-fitting surroundings on a free transfer, with the £5.8m move simply going down as a big misfire.

The promotion chasers will just be keeping everything crossed that history isn’t repeating itself at the moment.

Wilder's next Burke at Sheffield United

Wilder would have been aware this January that splashing the cash recklessly could work against his side, with seven new additions entering the building to help with United’s promotion efforts.

Whilst Tom Cannon was fresh off an 11-goal loan stint with Stoke City, coughing up £10m for the hot ticket attacker to join his ever-growing camp might well have raised some eyebrows, considering four of those strikes came in just one game.

But, with his blistering record at youth level also seeing him post 51 goals for former employers Everton, the risk of spending £10m on the Irishman was deemed one worth pursuing.

This is where the similarities to Burke’s unfortunate tale do begin to pop up, considering the now Werder Bremen forward was another face that had so much hype attached to his name when lighting up youth pitches, with the tag of being the ‘Scottish Gareth Bale’ even coming his way.

Looking at the table above, it’s been far from a smooth start to life in South Yorkshire for Cannon, with the lethal centre-forward play typical of his Potters stint now nowhere to be seen.

The 22-year-old has unfortunately drawn regular blanks instead, with Wilder using him sparingly across his promotion-chasing side’s last three league encounters, opting instead to utilise free transfer Tyrese Campbell as his lone marksman.

Labelled as “outstanding” in the past by ex-Hull City boss Liam Rosenior, Cannon is far from being written off yet in his new surroundings.

But, if he continues to be wasteful up top for the Blades after costing such a significant amount of cash to bring in, he could be hurtling down the same rocky road as Burke.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s season with Melbourne Renegades is over after the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) revoked his No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for the remainder of the Big Bash League.Mujeeb was not available for selection in Renegades’ eight-wicket defeat to Melburne Stars on Tuesday and ESPNcricinfo understands he has flown home to Afghanistan as he awaits an update from the board.”Mujeeb’s time with the Melbourne Renegades in BBL13 has unfortunately come to an end,” a Renegades spokesperson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo. “Due to a recent change in his NOC, his tournament ended earlier than anticipated and he flew home this evening.”The ACB announced on December 25 that Mujeeb, along with seamers Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq, would be sanctioned after telling the board they did not intend to sign central contracts for 2024. The three players were told they would be considered “non-eligible” for NOCs for the next two years, and that any current NOCs would be revoked.Related

ACB sanctions Mujeeb, Naveen, Farooqi for wanting to opt out of national contract

Mujeeb played two more games for Renegades after the ACB made their decision public, but the club was informed ahead of Tuesday’s Melbourne derby that his NOC has been withdrawn, ruling him out of the fixture.Farooqi and Naveen have since featured for Afghanistan in their ongoing T20I series against the UAE after talks with the board in which they “demonstrated a strong desire to represent their country again”, according to the ACB. Mujeeb was not part of Afghanistan’s squad for that series, but may come into consideration for their upcoming T20I tour of India. All three players are awaiting the outcome of a “comprehensive investigation” by an ACB committee which will reconsider the sanctions imposed. As things stand, they will be unavailable to play in overseas leagues over the next 24 months, including IPL 2024.The ACB’s hardline stance stands in contrast to the approach taken by most national boards in recent years, with the majority opting to allow their players flexibility to fulfil lucrative contracts in overseas leagues even if they turn down central contracts. The ICC clarified in April 2022 that all players require NOCs from their relevant member board to play in domestic matches overseas, regardless of their contractual status with the board and even if they have retired from the game.Joe Clarke, the English wicketkeeper-batter, has also been ruled out for the rest of the BBL season. Clarke injured his quad during the Renegades’ only win of the season, against Adelaide Strikers, and scans confirmed a tear which places his involvement in the ILT20, where he is due to play for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, in doubt.”Scans on Tuesday confirmed a quad tear, which ends his BBL tournament prematurely,” a Renegades spokesperson said. “He will leave the Renegades squad and fly home in the coming days.”Jordan Cox, Clarke’s compatriot, replaced him in the squad for Tuesday’s derby and is set to be available for the remainder of the league stages before he heads to the UAE for the ILT20. Quinton de Kock has only one match remaining on his contract before flying home for the SA20.On Wednesday, the club announced they had signed West Indies’ left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein for their final two regular-season games. Renegades are realistically out of finals contention, having won only one of their first seven matches.

Bangladesh recall Sodhi after run-out at non-striker's end

The New Zealand batter was on 17 when he was caught backing up early by Hasan Mahmud, but he was quickly offered a second life

Mohammad Isam23-Sep-2023Bangladesh captain Litton Das recalled batter Ish Sodhi after fast bowler Hasan Mahmud had run out the New Zealand player when he left the crease early at the non-striker’s end.Senior Bangladesh batter Tamim Iqbal spoke about the incident at the post-match press conference and appeared to be against bringing batters back after dismissing them. Sodhi was on 17 off 26 balls when he was called back. After the reprieve, he scored 18 off 13 with the help of two sixes. The incident took place in the 46th over when Mahmud broke the wicket in his bowling stride as Sodhi backed up early. The bowler appealed to umpire Marais Erasmus who went straight to the TV umpire. Replays showed that Sodhi was out of his crease when Mahmud dislodged the bails.Sodhi walked off with a smile on his face but as he neared the boundary rope, Bangladesh’s captain Litton told the umpire that he wanted to call Sodhi back. Informed of the gesture, Sodhi ran back to the middle and gave Mahmud a hug.Litton’s decision could be seen as surprising considering the run-out at the non-striker’s end was destigmatised last year by the MCC. In March 2022, the MCC moved the wording of this dismissal from Law 41 (Unfair play) to Law 38 (Run out), to remove some of the stigma around such dismissals.”The bowler is always painted as the villain but it is a legitimate way to dismiss someone and it is the non-striker who is stealing the ground,” Fraser Stewart, MCC Laws Manager, told the , at the time. “It is legitimate, it is a run-out and therefore it should live in the run-out section of the laws.”New Zealand finished on 254 all out in 49.2 overs.
