Berta may try to sign Guimaraes, Zubimendi and £120k-p/w star for Arsenal

da leao: Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has his eyes on both Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes and Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi, according to reports, but he could also look to bring in another highly-rated player with the duo.

Berta targeting Bruno Guimaraes and Martin Zubimendi for Arsenal

da supremo: Earlier this week, journalist Eduardo Burgos broke news that Berta personally wants both Guimaraes and Zubimendi, not either or, to come in and bolster Mikel Arteta’s midfield ahead of next season.

Berta blow as £327k-per-week star rejects Arsenal offer and signs new deal

His final decision has been made.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 13, 2025

While Arsenal are struggling to finalise a deal for Zubimendi right now, with advanced talks stalling (CaughtOffside), they haven’t completely given up the chase either, and it is believed that the Gunners could strike a deal for Guimaraes for around £59 million if Newcastle fail to qualify for the Champions League.

News of Berta plotting moves for both midfielders was then backed up by reports closer to home, with GiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs sharing that Guimaraes has been put forward by Arsenal’s new transfer chief as a serious option.

Arsenal’s interest in the Brazil international with Zubimendi appears pretty concrete at this stage, which comes as good news considering Thomas Partey and Jorginho are set to leave when their contracts expire this summer.

Jacobs, sharing a further update on the club’s plans for what could be a record-breaking summer under Berta, says another Newcastle United star Alexander Isak remains firmly on their radar.

Arsenal may sign Alexander Isak with Guimaraes and Zubimendi

The £120,000-per-week striker has dazzled as one of the English top flight’s standout forwards this season, and despite the potential cost involved in their mooted double-swoop for Zubimendi and Guimaraes, it is believed Berta may also try to sign Isak for Arsenal alongside the pair.

“So Zubimendi is very much the Edu target, but Berta is going to be looking at Bruno Guimaraes,” said Jacobs to GiveMeSport.

“And my understanding is that Arsenal may try for both Zubimendi and Guimaraes, plus Isak or [Benjamin] Sesko.”

The Swede has scored 22 goals in just 32 appearances across all competitions, so Arsenal are well aware of his quality, but a deal for him could be too much to ask. Newcastle value their man at around £150 million, so the Gunners would need to smash their transfer record to even hope of prising Isak away from St. James’ Park.

Arteta personally wants Isak, according to other reports, but Sesko may be a much more realistic target considering the release clause in his contract.

Colin Graves set for Yorkshire return as board accepts financial bail-out

Consortium’s offer will be ratified at EGM next month, as former chair prepares for controversial return

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jan-2024Colin Graves’ return as Yorkshire chairman looks set to be ratified next month, after the club’s board approved a restructured loan agreement from the consortium that he heads up.The prospect of Graves’ return to the role that he held between 2012-15 comes after Yorkshire this week claimed that it had spoken to more than 350 interested parties, but that his offer was the only one capable of warding off the financial peril faced by the club in the wake of the racism crisis that has engulfed it in recent seasons. In a statement, the club said: “The board of Yorkshire County Cricket Club has tonight agreed to recommend the loan agreement from Mr Colin Graves.” This is expected to involve an immediate injection of £1 million, followed by new investment worth £4 million.”The club will be sending a notice to members tomorrow [Thursday, 11 January] ahead of an EGM [extraordinary general meeting] which will outline the details of the offer as well as the resolutions and rule changes that are required to be ratified by members at the EGM.”Graves’ impending return is controversial, given that he was at the helm for some of the period that came under scrutiny during Azeem Rafiq’s testimony about his racist experiences at the club, for which Yorkshire was fined £400,000 and docked points for the 2023 season.Despite denying any knowledge of racism on his watch, Graves was last year criticised by the ECB for suggesting that some of the incidents raised had been “banter”.His involvement with Yorkshire began in 2002 when, as the founder of the Costcutter supermarket chain, he stepped in with another financial bail-out to save the club from bankruptcy. In March it was announced that the club had a £3.5 million shortfall and needed to repay approximately £14.9 million to the Graves Family Trust, which is managed by independent trustees.Speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday, Graves said: “The ball is in the Yorkshire board’s court to make a decision, but my interest is real. It’s absolute, and that’s for one reason and one reason only, and it’s to save Yorkshire County Cricket Club. None of us wants to see that institution disappear.”Other potential sources of investment had included Mike Ashley, the former owner of Newcastle United, and the Saudi national investment fund.Writing in The Observer on Sunday, Rafiq criticised the “broken promises” that had paved the way for Graves’ return, and called for the club’s sponsors to reconsider their involvement – as had been the case when the scandal originally erupted in November 2021, when a raft of partners including Emerald, Adidas and Yorkshire Tea all withdrew their support. One current sponsor, local tiling company Al Murad, is believed to be monitoring the situation closely. The development has also attracted criticism from a local MP. Alex Sobel, the Labour member for Leeds North West, said he was “very concerned” by Graves’ return, and called for him to offer “not just a statement recanting his views but full commitment to create a club for the whole community.”

Morgan: England's World Cup flop unparalleled in global sport

Eoin Morgan has suggested that England’s underperformance at the World Cup in India is unparalleled across sport and that their players are “definitely unsettled” after heavy defeats in four out of their five group games.England have not been mathematically eliminated from the tournament – even defeat in Lucknow on Sunday will not officially knock them out – but they are unlikely to qualify for the semi-finals even if they put together an improbable run of form and win all four of their remaining fixtures.Morgan, who captained them to the 2019 title, said it had been “unsettling” to watch England’s plight over the last three weeks and that their confidence had taken a beating. He also hinted at wider issues than simply form, saying: “I think there’s something else going on – there has to be.”Related

  • Virat Kohli is not Tendulkar, he's an all-too-human hero of a different sort

  • Life comes full circle for Kuldeep against England

  • Unbeaten India look to push England further towards elimination

And Morgan went as far as to suggest that England’s campaign has been among the worst in sporting history, in the context of the widespread expectation that they would reach the semi-finals. “I’ve never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team, given the level of expectation that is on their shoulders,” he said on Sky Sports.”There’s something within the team that is definitely unsettled. The method which they’re trying to use and given the substantial nature in which they’ve lost the game[s], it is definitely called into question, the morale within the changing room and the confidence. It must be at its lowest that it’s been for a considerable period of time now.”Morgan said that it was “an unacceptable excuse” to simply say that players were all out of form at the same time. “I think there’s something else going on – there has to be,” he said. “When you look at the strength in depth, particularly with the bat, England are as good on paper as any other side in this tournament, but they haven’t yet fired.”They’ve made mistakes with selection: they’ve really struggled to find a balanced side and one that’s effective enough to compete, never mind win this tournament. It’s been unbelievably challenging for Jos and his team… they have to regain the confidence in the method that they’ve used for so long that has made them double world champions.”Marcus Trescothick, England’s assistant coach, said that the squad are “feeling the heat” and “gutted” about their results to date, and admitted that he has been unable to get his head around their collective failures with the bat. England have lost 47 out of a possible 49 wickets (Reece Topley was absent hurt against South Africa) and no batter has made an individual 50 in their last two matches.”The thing that’s baffled me the most is that it’s been consistent across the board,” Trescothick said. “Bar the game at Dharamsala, where we played Bangladesh, where one got a big score [Dawid Malan’s 140] and we got a few other big scores around it, there’s just never been the consistency of people getting the runs.”I think they’re trying to understand it… it [their form] has not gone, it’s just hiding in a funny place at the moment. It’s not suddenly disappeared and they’re never going to score runs again. They’ll rebound from this and rebound back into form at some point. But it might be, unfortunately, disappointing that it’s going to be too late for this competition.”Dawid Malan is bowled for 140•Getty Images

Sunday’s match in Lucknow will be played on a used pitch, the same one that was used for South Africa’s win over Australia two weeks ago.”The timing actually couldn’t be any worse,” Morgan said. “Given India are still out and out favourites to win this tournament on home soil, that challenge just becomes far bigger now than it probably would be if you were playing on a fresh pitch.”England just have to play what’s in front of them,” he added. “For a lot of this tournament, I believe that they’ve been carrying other things or looking outside of the camp, as opposed to their own performance. They need to stay in the present for as long as they can tomorrow and turn India over.”

2021 Fantasy Baseball: National League Closer Reports

NL EAST

Atlanta Braves

In the early fantasy draft season, Chris Martin was considered a co-option for saves for the Braves. He throws strikes with an improving arm, but his 2021 value was based on 18 excellent innings (1.00 ERA and 0.61 WHIP). Martin worked as a closer in Japan in 2016 (21 saves). At age 34, his arm is improving in the majors while being more of a backup plan if Will Smith struggles. He pitched two no-hit shutout innings with three strikeouts so far in spring training.

A summer battle with Covid knocked Will Smith out of the save conversation for Atlanta last year. He looked more than worthy of pitching in the ninth over two seasons for the Giants (48 saves) while being tough to hit and owning a rising strikeout rate. Smith dominated over his first five appearances in March (no runs, one hit, and no walks over five innings with 10 strikeouts). A fantasy owner should be able to draft him with confidence over the final days for fantasy drafts.

Miami Marlins

The top two choices for saves for the Marlins early in 2021 are Anthony Bass and Yimi Garcia. My bet is in the Garcia camp.

Bass offers a veteran arm who lacks a difference-maker arm at age 33. He earned 12 saves over the past two seasons with the Mariners and Blue Jays, which was more due to injuries. Over 7.1 innings or work in spring training, he allowed two runs and nine baserunners with six strikeouts.

Garcia has the talent to close injuries cost him development time in the majors from 2018 to 2020. Last season he allowed one run over 15 innings with 19 strikeouts for the Marlins. His arm has been up and down so far in March (five runs over seven innings with nine strikeouts.

Jim Rassol/USA TODAY Sports

New York Mets

Edwin Diaz failed to live up to expectations in saves (32) in his first two seasons with the Mets, and his walk rate remains a concern. His ceiling is immense with better command, and he should have a clean ride to the closing role for New York in 2021. Over five innings in spring training, Diaz hasn’t given up a run or issued a walk with seven strikeouts. His foundation skill set gives him the tools to be the best closer in the majors in 2021 if his walk rate approaches his 2018 success (17 over 73.1 innings).

Over six seasons in the majors, Trevor May has seven saves while starting his career as a starter. He has a 3.19 ERA and 153 strikeouts over his 113 innings, which puts him next to save with the Mets with Seth Lugo injured. May allowed two runs over six innings in March with seven strikeouts.

Philadelphia Phillies

The coin toss for saves in Philly remains a dead heat between Archie Bradley and Hector Neris. Both players pitched well in spring training with no disaster showings.

Neris has more experience (72 career saves) with a higher ceiling in strikeouts at this point in his career. His arm can have peaks and valleys with occasional battles with home runs. He allowed a pair of runs over 6.2 innings with no walks and nine strikeouts in spring training.

Bradley has a 2.95 ERA and 259 strikeouts over 234.2 innings since converting to a reliever while picking up 28 saves. He has a 1.13 ERA in March over eight innings with five strikeouts.

The dark horse for saves for Philadelphia this year is Jose Alvarado. He brings a big fastball while batting walks over his recent years with Tampa. Alvarado battled injuries over the past two seasons after pitching well in 2018 (2.39 ERA and 80 strikeouts over 64 innings). Based on his spring training (no runs over six innings with one walk and 10 strikeouts), he deserves a chance at saves if the Phillies are willing to use a lefty arm in the ninth inning.

Washington Nationals

Last season fantasy owners wrote Brad Hand off after fading in 2019 (3.30 ERA). He converted all 16 saves for Cleveland, leading to him picking up a new closing role for the Nationals. Hand has 103 saves over the previous four seasons with 323 strikeouts over 230.2 innings. Despite no competition for saves with Washington, his arm hasn’t been sharp in spring training (four runs and 12 baserunners over five innings) while walking five batters.

Priyadharshani stars as Sri Lanka cruise into semis; Bangladesh advance after washout

Thailand were restricted to 78 for 7 before Sri Lanka aced the chase; Bangladesh’s game against Hong Kong abandoned with a ball bowled

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Sep-2023Inoshi Priyadharshani’s career-best returns of 4 for 10 backed up by a quick 32 from Anushka Sanjeewani helped Sri Lanka brush aside Thailand by eight wickets and advance to the semi-finals of the Asian Games in Hangzhou.Chasing 79 in the rain-reduced 15-overs-a-side quarter-final, Sri Lanka coasted to a win in 10.5 overs.Rain and a wet outfield had delayed the start of the game by close to an hour-and-a-half. Once the weather cleared, Sri Lanka opted to field under grey skies.Udeshika Prabodhani found some movement in the air, but it was Priyadharshani who inflicted the early damage, accounting for four of the first five wickets to fall. She struck twice in her first over – the second of the innings – dismissing Suwanan Khiaoto and Natthakan Chantham. In her next over, she removed Nannapat Koncharoenkai before accounting for Naruemol Chaiwai with a smart caught and bowled. At 37 for 6, Thailand were sinking rapidly but a 29-run stand between Chanida Sutthiruang and Phannita Maya arrested the slide a touch. Sutthiruang top-scored with an unbeaten 31 and was the only batter to get into double-digits as Thailand managed to reach 78 for 7 in 15 overs.Chamari Athapaththu and Sanjeewani then made light work of the chase. They brought up their 50 partnership in the sixth over before Thipatcha Putthawong accounted for Athapaththu, who top edged a slog sweep to mid-on.Putthawong also removed Sanjeewani but the damage had been done by then. Thailand were not helped by their ground fielding; they committed a number of misfields and dropped chances. Harshitha Samarawickrama closed the game in the 11th over with a pull over deep square leg.Sri Lanka will face Pakistan in the second semi-final on Sunday.Bangladesh advance to semi-final after washoutRain had the final say in the fourth quarter-final of the Asian Games, with the Bangladesh-Hong Kong game getting washed out without a ball being bowled. As a result, Bangladesh have qualified for the semi-final as they have a higher seeding and will now face India in the first semi-final on Sunday.Three out of the four quarter-final games have been abandoned, while the other game was reduced to a 15-overs-a-side affair because of persistent rain. The India-Bangladesh semi-final serves as a tantalising prospect given the recent history between the two sides. India had toured Bangladesh for a three-match T20I and ODI series in July this year. While India won the T20Is 2-1, the ODI series ended in a 1-1 draw and was followed by huge controversies surrounding the umpiring. The incidents also saw India captain Harmanpreet Kaur being fined and handed four demerit points for her outbursts, which meant she had to miss the first two matches at the Asian Games.

Blackburn learn compensation fee to appoint 44 y/o as Eustace’s replacement

Blackburn Rovers are now aware of how much it will cost to take a League One manager out of his current job and bring him to Ewood Park, according to a reliable reporter.

Blackburn manager latest

It was announced in the middle of last week that John Eustace had left his role as Blackburn boss to become the new Derby County manager. It was a decision that came as a surprise to many, but since his departure, the Lancashire side have won back-to-back games, beating West Brom and Plymouth Argyle by 2-0 scorelines.

Interim boss David Lowe has done an excellent job at keeping Blackburn’s play-off hopes alive, but it is likely that a new manager will be brought into the club as they look to build on Eustace’s success.

There have already been a few names linked to the vacancy at Ewood Park, with Carlos Carvalhal, Aitor Karanka, Raphael Wicky, and George Boateng all being mentioned as possible candidates.

Meanwhile, former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil has also been added to the Championship side’s shortlist, as he’s been out of work for a couple of months since leaving Molineux.

As well as O’Neil, Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens has been added to the managerial shortlist after continuing to impress in the third tier.

Blackburn learn compensation fee to appoint 44 y/o

Now, according to reporter Alan Nixon, as relayed by Football League World, Blackburn have learned that it will cost them £250,000 to get Wellens out of Leyton Orient and into the hot seat at Ewood Park.

The 44-year-old, who likes his sides to play in a 4-2-3-1 formation, joined Orient in March 2022 and has since taken charge of 153 games at the club, guiding them to promotion in his first full season, and they are now in a fight for a play-off spot in League One.

It is unclear how interested Blackburn are in appointing Wellens as their next manager, but the fee certainly suggests Orient are in no mood to hand him over on the cheap as they seek a spot in the Championship.

Nixon added that Rovers are stepping up their search for a new manager this week, with them set to speak to candidates as they try to get an appointment in place for their game against Swansea City next Saturday.

After 30 games in League One this season, Wellens has guided Orient to 15 wins and 5 draws. Not Harrison: Everton have their new Bilyaletdinov in "frustrated" flop

David Moyes returned to Everton to take on the job at Goodison Park for the second time in his career when he replaced Sean Dyche back in January.

The Scottish manager has hit the ground running on Merseyside with just one defeat in his ten Premier League matches in charge of the club to date, with that coming in his first game against Aston Villa before a nine-match unbeaten run.

Moyes got an instant reaction out of Portuguese centre-forward Beto, who scored five goals in the manager’s first seven games back at the club, but his powers do have their limits.

Everton striker Beto

Everton’s wingers have struggled throughout this season, under Dyche and Moyes, and the Scottish head coach may have just found his new Diniyar Bilyaletdinov.

Why Diniyar Bilyaletdinov was a flop at Everton

The Toffees signed the winger from Lokomotiv Moscow for a reported fee of £9m in the summer of 2009, with the current Everton manager seemingly hoping that he would have a big impact on the flanks.

Unfortunately, however, that was not the case as Bilyaletdinov only went on to score eight goals in 59 appearances for the club in the Premier League before his exit at the start of 2012.

Six of those eight goals came in his debut season for the Toffees. He followed that up with two goals in 26 top-flight matches in the 2010/11 campaign and zero goals in ten league games in the first half of the following season.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Bilyaletdinov then signed for Spartak Moscow for a fee of just £5m in January 2012, which further emphasises how much of a flop the forward was as he struggled on the pitch and the club made a loss on him.

Everton have their new Diniyar Bilyaletdinov

Some may want to point to Jack Harrison, who is on loan from Leeds, as the biggest flop out wide and, therefore, label him as the new Bilyaletdinov.

However, it is Jesper Lindstrom who has emerged as Moyes’ next version of the Russian wide man, as he has been even worse than the Englishman this season.

Lindstrom-Everton

Everton signed the Danish winger on loan from Napoli last summer with an option to make the deal permanent for £19m, but his form this term suggests that the club should avoid exercising that option.

As you can see in the table above, Harrison has managed to score a goal and has created more chances with more xA, but has been unfortunate not to register an assist.

The English forward has also won more duels per game to help his team out defensively, as Lindstrom has left a lot to be desired with his play both in and out of possession on the right flank.

Everton winger Jesper Lindstrom

Everton’s Napoli loanee, who Michael Ball claimed has been “frustrated” by his lack of service on the wing, has produced zero goals and two assists in 30 matches in all competitions this season.

That return is, quite simply, not good enough, and is not good enough to warrant a fee of £19m being splashed on his services this summer, as the £50k-per-week forward has flopped hard at Goodison Park by failing to influence matches with goals and assists on an even semi-regular basis.

Therefore, Lindstrom has become the new Bilyaletdinov at Everton for Moyes as a winger who has flopped because of their lack of contributions at the top end of the pitch.
