Faf du Plessis' three-year plan ready for take off

South Africa are headed for their busiest summer ever, with the pressure of a World Cup and a new T20 League looming; they will need their captain to nail his targets

Firdose Moonda26-Sep-20172:24

‘It’s a new beginning for us’ – Rabada

You’ve heard of five-year plans and ten-year timelines to live your best life, but Faf du Plessis will have to make do with less. Having often spoken of the 2019 World Cup as a logical end-point for him, du Plessis’ may be a three-year tryst with the South African captaincy, which is approaching its most important period now.The middle season of du Plessis’ leadership sees South Africa embark on their busiest home summer in history. They host four teams – Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, India and Australia – and will play 10 Tests, (pending the ICC’s approval of the four-day, day-night match against Zimbabwe as a Test) nine ODIs, and five T20Is, against the backdrop of distraction their domestic T20 league will bring. The inaugural Global T20 promises to add glamour and gravitas to the South African calendar and du Plessis, who is part of it as captain of the Stellenbosch Kings, will have to make sure his men stay focused on the national cause despite the excitement of the new event.Luckily for South Africa, in his first year in charge, du Plessis showed he could demand focus. South Africa won four out of five Test series to climb from No.7 on the rankings to No.2 and achieved their first-ever 5-0 ODI whitewash of Australia. They did all that while dealing with uncertainty on several fronts: from the future of the coach, Russell Domingo, to the commitment of the former captain AB de Villiers. As speculation sprouted on both subjects, du Plessis was the one person who could be counted on to be honest. He was steadfast in his support for Domingo and said both he and the team wanted Domingo to stay on. When they didn’t get that, du Plessis immediately sought information on the new man, Ottis Gibson, from the England changeroom and began to build a relationship with him.Faf du Plessis with Russell Domingo•Getty ImagesAt the same time, du Plessis was the one revealing de Villiers’ difficulties in managing his time playing both international cricket and in T20 leagues while also trying to prioritise his young family, Du Plessis did not expect de Villiers to avail himself to the Test side again; he probably also didn’t expect de Villiers to step down as one-day captain and hand him the full set of captaincies. It is now du Plessis’ job to lead South Africa in all three formats and he knows that means it his job to win the World Cup. Though still 21 months away, it will be talked about incessantly and annoyingly, the way a child talks about Christmas toy in January. It will be analysed until all there is left to analyse is the analysis itself. And it will be coveted, because until South Africa get their hands on the trophy, they will desire it with everything they have. If there is one man who understands how much of a toll that will take, it’s du Plessis. In the aftermath of South Africa’s failed Champions Trophy campaign, du Plessis was as much at a loss as anyone else but he was also the only person who accepted personal responsibility – he was involved in two run-outs in the must-win game against India. South Africans appreciated that. As angry as they were in the team’s inability to exorcise the ghosts of tournaments past, they could see genuine disappointment and hear an admission of guilt from du Plessis. They couldn’t fight with that. All they could do was hurt with him.In essence, that’s what allowed du Plessis to win friends and influence people in the year he has been captain. He is just plain likeable.Faf du Plessis waits to lead South Africa out•Getty ImagesHe has the backing of the change room – like during the ball-tampering allegations in Australia – and of the country. While Graeme Smith had faced the wrath of nation when he missed the homecoming press conference after the 2011 World Cup because he travelled to propose to his girlfriend, du Plessis found himself wrapped in support when he opted out of the Lord’s Test to spend a few extra days with his wife following the difficult birth of their first child. Sure, South Africans have grown up a little and come to see their sportsmen as people; but the sportsmen have grown up too, and see themselves as part of the people, not above them. This is also true of the way du Plessis interacts with opposition. He is well-respected across the cricket world, from Australia where Steven Smith backed him over ball-tampering, to Pakistan, where du Plessis was picked to captain the World XI earlier this month. Du Plessis is trusted for his maturity, which he will need as South Africa embark on the second year of his leadership.Foremost in du Plessis’ mind will be adapting the team to the style of the new coach, Gibson, and integrating the Barbadian into their values. But beyond the philosophical, there is also the real stuff. Du Plessis will have to play a role in managing players over the course of the next six months, particularly bowlers, of whom South Africa are already carrying four wounded ones. He will want to plough into the talent pool to find some of the missing pieces for all the international sides – batsmen, especially batsmen of colour, for the Test XI, death-bowlers in limited-overs cricket and players with big-match temperaments.Against Bangladesh, du Plessis may have a relatively gentle easing in, but things will get tougher as the summer unfolds. Against India, South Africa have a point to prove. It was only two years ago that South Africa were humbled on Indian dust-bowls, and with talk of green mambas ready to bite, the series should be filled with fireworks that a calm captain will have to have a careful watch over. After that, when fatigue may be setting in, South Africa host Australia, a side they have not had a home Test series win over since readmission.Faf du Plessis tries to nail his targets•Getty ImagesImportantly, du Plessis is not in this alone. His successor is being groomed under his nose and that’s no bad thing. South Africa have learnt from the mistake they made when they settled so deep into a comfort zone under Graeme Smith that they barely gave a thought to who would be next. That complacency cost them because it took more than three years after Smith stepped down in March 2014 to find out.Aiden Markram, the 2014 under-19 World Cup winning captain who was put in charge of the Titans franchise last week, is widely expected to become the next national leader and he will have a decent apprenticeship. Markram’s international career will start in two days’ time, when he opens the batting for Test team against Bangladesh. If all goes well, Markram will have ten Tests to bed in and may even find himself in a limited-overs’ side as the season develops. All of that should be encouraged because the more Markram can learn from du Plessis, the better. The more Markram can become part of the du Plessis era, the easier the transition will be.For now, its du Plessis’ team to mould and make a success of. Though he has already had some, du Plessis’ has most recently dealt with disappointment. The England tour, especially the Tests, were blighted by injuries and absentees but South Africa’s return home with nothing was a cause for concern. It suggested there is a need for a more serious introspection than the one South Africa had last winter, just before du Plessis took over, when they outlined goals. Now, they need clear plans and they need to find a way to stay competitive while dealing with myriad challenges – from a packed calendar to Kolpak. They need calm heads. They need to remember to have some fun too. They need du Plessis’ three-year plan to take shape.

Nat Sciver-Brunt reveals she missed Pakistan T20I for egg-freezing procedure

England allrounder discusses hopes of starting a family in future with wife Katherine

ESPNcricinfo staff17-May-2024England allrounder Nat Sciver-Brunt has revealed that she missed the first T20I against Pakistan after having her eggs frozen with a view to having a family.Sciver-Brunt was not involved at Edgbaston last weekend, due to what was described as a “minor medical procedure”. She has now spoken publicly about the process in a conversation with her wife, former England seamer Katherine Sciver-Brunt, on the PCA’s Under The Lid podcast.”In the period between getting back from New Zealand [where England toured in April] and this [series], I thought it was a great time to go through the egg-freezing process, creating embryos and putting them in the freezer for future use,” she said.”Katherine and myself would love to start a family but I’d also like to continue playing cricket. We are lucky in that there are more options than one. We’re just working out the best way for us to go about it. I’d like to carry a baby when I finish playing cricket and I think Katherine wants to carry a baby as well.”England have been really good. The sports science and medical department are really supportive and have helped me along the way, making sure coming back to cricket has been smooth. After the procedure you’re wiped out for quite a few days.”On missing the first T20I, she said: “I’d only just started back to exercise, so wasn’t quite ready [to play].”She is expected to be involved in the second match against Pakistan, to be played in Northampton on Friday evening.Katherine, who retired last year, said they had begun to explore the process because “there is a timeframe on how fertile you can be”, with Nat, 31, hoping to being involved in the 2028 Olympics before making any further decisions on when to have children.”If Nat was 24 she might want to have a child, then come back and play. At 31, it’s on the verge,” Katherine said. “Freezing the eggs now and having healthy eggs to come back to – it’s great to be able to have that choice because it’s not cheap and very invasive.”

Smart Stats: How about Sherfane Rutherford for Man of the Match?

The West Indian dasher made the highest contribution to Delhi Capitals’ win according to ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats

ESPNcricinfo Stats team28-Apr-2019The official match award in Delhi Capitals’ 16-run win over Royal Challengers Bangalore went to Shikhar Dhawan for his 37-ball 50, but ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats reckoned that Sherfane Rutherford made the highest impact for Capitals in their win, which put them in the IPL playoffs for the first time since 2012.Rutherford contributed with both bat and ball to Capitals’ cause: he scored a blistering 13-ball 28 not out that helped Capitals add 46 runs in their last three overs from a tricky position, and then took the key wicket of AB de Villiers at a critical juncture in the chase.Smart Stats valued Rutherford’s 28 runs worth 12 more, given the context of the game, as we considered the relative strike rate of the batsman and the pressure on him.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe wicket of de Villiers was also valued higher than just 1 because of the quality of the South African batsman, and the damage he could have inflicted had he batted on given the target was well within Royal Challengers’ sights. They needed 85 from 52 balls with eight wickets in hand when de Villiers was dismissed. Overall, Rutherford’s impact in Delhi’s win was 31.4%, the most by any Delhi player.Axar Patel’s cameo of 16 not out off nine balls, and his economical spell of 1 for 26 that included the prized wicket of Virat Kohli, earned him the next highest impact at 24.1%. Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer took the third spot at 14.7% for his 37-ball 52.

He was a machine: 9/10 Aston Villa star is now as undroppable as Rashford

Aston Villa were knocked out of the Champions League in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night as they beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2, only to go out 5-4 on aggregate.

The Villans went 2-0 down early on but brilliantly battled back to put themselves 3-2 ahead on the night, only to fail to find a late equaliser to take the tie to extra time.

Irrespective of the final outcome, it was a sensational effort from Unai Emery’s team as they fought to the very last second to save their campaign, with impressive performers across the board – including Marcus Rashford.

Why Marcus Rashford is now undroppable

After a difficult start to the match, losing possession in the build-up to PSG’s first goal, the Manchester United loanee went on to play a key role in the spirited attempted comeback.

The England international completed four dribbles on the night and two of those came in the build-up to Ezri Konsa’s goal, as he impressively beat two defenders before putting the ball on a plate for the defender to stroke the ball into the bottom corner.

Rashford, who also had two shots on target on the night, was constantly trying to make things happen for the Villans – attempting nine dribbles – and provided the PSG defence with plenty of problems.

The United loanee has now produced three goals and two assists in his last seven appearances for Villa and should be undroppable at this point, due to his form in front of goal, but he is not the only player who should now be considered undroppable.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Why John McGinn is undroppable

John McGinn stepped up with a phenomenal display for the Villans against PSG on Tuesday and should now be as undroppable as Rashford for Emery.

The Scotland international has not been a guaranteed starter at times this season, coming off the bench in each of the last two Premier League matches, but his showing against PSG should change that, as it was one that was rewarded with a 9/10 player rating by the Birmingham Mail.

McGinn, who also scored off the bench against Southampton last time out in the top-flight, was a constant nuisance to the PSG team with his all-action performance in midfield, getting stuck in as well as providing quality on the ball.

The Villa star, as you can see in the table above, made three fouls and won four duels to break up play, but he also scored a deflected strike from distance and teed up Youri Tielemans for his goal.

McGinn also had more touches (40) than the Belgian wizard (31), which shows that he was constantly taking responsibility in possession to make things happen, and lost the ball 15 times.

It was a terrific captain’s performance by the Scottish midfielder and one that should convince Emery to make him an undroppable figure in the team for the weeks to come.

Wayne Madsen halts Leicestershire's charge for victory

With rain scheduled on day four, Madsen, with the help of Alex Thomson, kept alive Derbyshire’s hopes of a draw

Derbyshire 167 (Lloyd 54, Scriven 3-30) and (Madsen 59*, Thomson 46*, Currie 3-36) trail Leicestershire 574 for 7 dec by 183 runsWayne Madsen was again a thorn in Leicestershire’s side as he rescued Derbyshire from the threat of a three-day defeat in the Vitality County Championship match at Derby. After Derbyshire were made to follow-on 407 runs in arrears, the 40-year-old blocked the visitors’ push for victory with an obdurate unbeaten 59 from 114 balls to steer his team to 224 for 6 at the close. But with rain forecast on the final day, Madsen, who has scored five centuries against Leicestershire, has given his side a good chance of salvaging a draw.Despite missing several frontline bowlers, Leicestershire bowled Derbyshire out for 167 with Tom Scriven, Ben Mike and Scott Currie all taking three wickets. When Derbyshire slipped to 144 for 6 in their second innings, Leicestershire sensed an early finish but Alex Thomson, 46 not out, stayed with Madsen for 27 overs to keep them waiting.Derbyshire’s chances of avoiding the follow on had been slim at the start of another sunny but chilly day and drifted even further 10 overs into the morning session. Nightwatchman Sam Conners was the first to go when he played across the line at Scriven but the departure of David Lloyd was a damaging blow to the hosts. The Derbyshire captain looked in good touch, pulling Mike for six before driving the seamer to the cover boundary to reach 50 from 63 balls. But Mike had the last word when he deceived Lloyd with a ball that angled away to knock out his off stump.Aneurin Donald and Anuj Dal restored some order with a stand of 67 from 74 balls until the introduction of Liam Trevaskis lured Donald into a rush of blood. He swept the left arm spinner’s first ball to the boundary but then charged down the pitch, missed an ugly swipe and was bowled. It was a reckless shot in any circumstances but was wholly inappropriate given the state of the match. The lower order subsided quickly with Currie claiming the last two wickets which left Derbyshire to face one over before lunch. Harry Came survived a hard chance to short leg off the penultimate ball but the openers looked relatively comfortable after the interval, passing 50 before Currie hit a hot streak. Running in from the Racecourse End, he trapped Came on the crease and in his next over removed Reece who misjudged the line, offering no shot to a ball that nipped back. But the best was still to come. Lloyd was completely deceived by a full toss that dipped on him, knocking out the off stump and leaving him flat on his back. When Trevaskis again struck in his first over, pinning Brooke Guest leg before half-forward just before tea, the scent of victory was in the air for the visitors. On a day of little comfort for Derbyshire, Wayne Madsen passed 15,000 first-class runs after the interval but lost Donald who aimed a pull at Scrivens and was bowled.Dal stayed with Madsen for seven overs before Mike had him caught behind down the legside but Thomson joined Madsen to frustrate Leicestershire.

Not Engels: Rodgers has already found Celtic's new McGregor in teen star

Celtic provided the perfect response to their 3-2 defeat to their rivals before the international break with a 3-0 win over Hearts at Parkhead on Saturday.

The Hoops had allowed their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table to be cut down to 13 points by losing to Rangers, but immediately bounced back with a convincing win over the Jam Tarts.

Daizen Maeda took his tally for the season to 30 goals in all competitions for the Bhoys with his two strikes against Hearts, whilst Jota added another goal to his collection since his return to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

Whilst many will focus on the attacking talent that was on display, as Jota and Maeda stole the headlines with their goals, the presence of Callum McGregor in the middle of the park was equally as important.

Why Callum McGregor's performance was important for Celtic

The retired Scotland international missed the 3-2 defeat to Rangers before the break through injury and returned to show the Hoops what they missed with a sublime display in midfield.

Celtic’s captain lined up alongside Reo Hatate and Arne Engels in the midfield three against Hearts on Saturday and stood out as the star performer in that area of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, McGregor outperformed his positional peers in the match with his exceptional use of the ball and his reliability defensively.

This illustrates why his display was so important for Brendan Rodgers against Hearts because it highlights the quality he brings in and out of possession.

The left-footed star provides a metronomic presence at the base of the midfield for Celtic with his ability to complete passes efficiently under pressure, completing 94% of his passes overall in the division this season.

McGregor, who completes 73 passes per game on average, can control games for the Hoops by dictating the tempo of matches with his passing quality, whilst also frustrating opposition teams because of his press resistance on the ball, forcing them to drop back deeper.

This is part of the reason why Celtic struggled without their captain when they faced Rangers at Parkhead before the break, as Engels is not best suited to that role as the number six.

Why Arne Engels struggled against Rangers

The former Augsburg star started at the base of the midfield, with Luke McCowan and Hatate in the number eight positions, and struggled against the Gers.

Engels is usually tasked with playing as one of the more advanced midfielders, looking to score and create goals, but had to step up in a deeper role against Rangers because of his captain’s injury.

As you can see in the table above, the Belgium international failed to live up to the standards that the skipper has set for that position in or out of possession, losing the ball far too frequently and offering little protection to the back four.

The 21-year-old starlet should not be expected to be as effective in that role, though, because he is an attack-minded player who has a future as a number eight for Celtic, rather than as a deep-lying conductor of play.

Engels has racked up ten goals and 12 assists in all competitions for the Scottish giants this term, which shows that he has excelled at his natural game – scoring and creating goals.

The former Bundesliga whiz is not the long-term successor to McGregor, because that is not his natural game, and that is why he struggled in the game against Rangers before the break.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Rodgers, though, may have already unearthed his next version of the Celtic captain by bringing 19-year-old academy starlet Jude Bonnar into the first-team group.

Why Jude Bonnar could be the next Callum McGregor

The teenage dynamo has been in the matchday squad on five occasions in all competitions since the start of February, and got ten minutes off the bench in a 5-1 win over Aberdeen in the Premiership.

That ten-minute cameo, in which the Scotland U21 international completed all four of his attempted passes, was his first-team debut for the Hoops and the manager spoke to his suitability for the team after the match.

Rodgers told the Daily Record: “He’s got a good profile and fits how we want to play. So that is a nice little taster for him.”

This suggests that the Northern Irish boss sees potential in Bonnar and believes that the teenage talent has the technical skills and know-how to suit the way that his team lines up, with a number six and two eights in a midfield three.

Brendan Rodgers

The B team star, whose ability was described as “unbelievable” by former coach Alan McGrillen, spoke to Celtic TV after the game and admitted that he looks up to McGregor as a role model, because of how he acts on and off the pitch every day.

Bonnar has already shown a tiny glimpse of his metronomic qualities, completing 100% of his passes in his cameo against Aberdeen, and Rodgers could look to help him develop and refine that ability to mould him into the new version of McGregor in the future.

The Scottish youngster has also shown the potential to offer a goal threat, as the captain has with eight goals in 28 league matches this term, with a return of ten goals in 46 B team games.

Celtic gem was "the next Van Dijk" but Postecoglou sold him for just £1m

The former Celtic star was described as “the next Van Dijk” by his former manager.

ByDan Emery Apr 3, 2025

This is only the start of the road for Bonnar, though, and there is plenty more time left for him to progress as a player and forge his own way in the game, hopefully at Celtic.

The very early signs, however, are that the potential is there for him to develop into McGregor 2.0 for Rodgers as a composed and controlling midfield star who can also provide a goal threat.

Emery could ditch Kamara by unleashing "world-class" Aston Villa ace

Aston Villa stand on the edge of glory. While their Champions League may have ended by PSG, Unai Emery’s side have a wonderful chance to reach a first FA Cup final since 2015.

The club have not won this competition since 1957. Indeed, they haven’t won a major honour since 1996, and it would be fitting to finally end this drought under a man who has lifted them from the doldrums.

In midweek, the Midlands side suffered a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League. While not disastrous, it represented a chance to cement their place in the top five of the table.

Several of the starting XI failed to perform as expected, most notably Boubacar Kamara in the heart of the midfield.

Why Emery must drop Boubacar Kamara

There is no doubt Kamara has been excellent when called upon this season, but against City, he didn’t quite look himself.

He played the full 90 minutes alongside Amadou Onana for Villa and succeeded with 87% of his passes, but the Frenchman could only win one of his seven contested ground duels, along with losing possession eight times.

Boubacar Kamara

Kamara also failed to make a single tackle during the match and was dribbled past on two occasions. Despite his tireless shift, it wasn’t enough to see Villa take home all three points.

With an FA Cup final place at stake this weekend, Emery might just switch things up ahead of the match against Crystal Palace.

This could see Kamara dropped from the starting XI, with Youri Tielemans slotting back into a deeper role.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

If so, there is only one man who should be deployed as Villa’s number ten – Marco Asensio.

Marco Asensio must be unleashed by Aston Villa

The Spaniard has been a truly inspired signing by Emery, even if it is just on a temporary basis.

Indeed, the former Real Madrid starlet has scored eight goals and chipped in with a solitary assist for the club across 20 matches.

In the Premier League, Asensio has created one big chance, averaging 1.3 key passes and succeeding in 58% of his dribble attempts.

These statistics are made even better considering he has started only five matches in the top flight since arriving back in January.

Dubbed as “world-class” by former Arsenal and Birmingham City defender Matthew Upson in March after his exploits against Club Brugge in the Champions League.

If the club have a chance of signing him on a permanent deal, then Emery must do everything in his power to do so.

Starting him against Palace at Wembley could give Villa the best chance of reaching the final of the competition, no doubt about that, because of the attacking quality that he can provide with his ability to both score and create.

The PSG loanee has scored twice in the tournament so far, netting a double against Cardiff. If he is unleashed, expect him to conjure up some more magic for the Villa faithful.
