64 touches, 93% passes: Man Utd's 8/10 star is now as important as Bruno

Manchester United could only secure a 2-2 draw with French side Lyon in the Europa League last night, with Ruben Amorim’s side unfortunate not to come away the victors.

Goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee could’ve secured all three points for the Red Devils but were denied the win by a late strike from the hosts in stoppage time.

Thiago Almada and Rayan Cherki were on the scoresheet for the Ligue 1 outfit, with goalkeeper Andre Onana at fault for both of the host’s efforts at the Groupama Stadium.

Andre Onana

Whilst a win could’ve been on the cards after edging ahead with just a couple of minutes to go, Amorim’s men have the chance to secure qualification at Old Trafford next Thursday.

Despite their failure to return to home soil with an advantage, numerous players managed to impress, certainly securing their place in the side for the second leg next week.

Man Utd’s star performers against Lyon

Wing-back Patrick Dorgu once again demonstrated that he’s been a superb winter addition to the United first-team, impressing once more in the draw last night.

The 20-year-old completed 100% of the crosses he’s attempted, whilst also achieving an 88% pass completion rate along with a 100% success rate in tackles and aerial duels won – having a huge impact at both ends.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been the shining light in what has been a dismal season for the club, often being the go-to man in terms of goal contributions within the final third.

Last night was no different for the Portuguese international, registering the assist for Zirkzee’s effort, stretching his lead as the Europa League’s highest contributor in terms of goals and assists.

However, despite the showing of the 30-year-old, one other player managed to impress within Amorim’s side – arguably becoming as important as the talent in recent months.

The player who’s becoming as important as Bruno for United

As previously mentioned, Fernandes has thrived this year despite United’s lowly league standing – notching 31 combined goals and assists across all competitions.

Bruno Fernandes

It’s unthinkable to imagine where the Red Devils would be without him in 2024/25, undoubtedly the key reason as to why they still have an opportunity to end the season as Europa League winners.

However, if they are to achieve such a feat, he won’t be able to do it alone, with other first team members needing to step up to the occasion and push the side in the right direction.

Centre-back Yoro has done just that over the last couple of months, cementing his place within the backline upon his return to action after a long injury lay-off.

His showing against Lyon last night was yet another one to be proud of, catching the eye at both ends of the pitch despite his defensive position.

The 19-year-old managed to net his first goal for the club during the draw, putting the side level after Onana’s mistake from Almada’s free-kick in the first half.

However, he also starred with his ball-playing, notching a total of 64 touches, and completing 50 passes at a completion rate of 93% – highlighting his composure on the ball.

He also managed to impress at the back, winning 100% of the tackles he entered, whilst also managing to win two ground duels – thriving despite the side conceding twice.

As a result of his showing, Yoro was handed an 8/10 match rating by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst – showcasing how impressive he was in France last night.

After such a display, it’s safe to say the Frenchman has managed to cement his place as a regular starter at the heart of the backline, with the defence needing to be built around him this summer.

Whilst Bruno has been the star in attacking areas of late, there’s no denying that Yoro has proven he’s capable of being a key player in the United rebuild, having the potential to improve further given his tender age.

Vanderlei Luxemburgo é o favorito no momento.

Best signing since Bowen: West Ham struck gold on £90k-p/w "game-changer"

West Ham have spent some big money over the past few seasons, since earning a huge figure for their club captain (at the time), Declan Rice, who joined Arsenal in 2023 for a fee of around £105m. This enabled the Hammers to reinvest that money, looking to upgrade in multiple departments.

The 2023/24 season saw West Ham spend a total of €144.56m (£120.903m) bringing five new players to the club on permanent transfers, whilst the 2024/25 season was even busier, spending another €144.40m (£120.769m) on eight new signings, as well as a few loan deals with options to buy.

Five of West Ham’s ten highest earners are from these two seasons of spending, with James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez, Max Kilman, Mohammed Kudus, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all being purchased in this timeframe. But their highest earner was bought back in 2020, which has proven to be excellent value for money signing over the years.

West Ham's highest earner

West Ham’s highest earner is clearly the benchmark here, after all, this article is all about the best signing since this man. Jarrod Bowen earns £150,000k per week, making him the joint highest earner at the club alongside Lucas Paqueta.

Bowen has made 229 appearances since joining the Hammers back in January 2020, scoring 68 goals for the club, providing 46 assists, and totaling 18,102 minutes played. The England international has shown his versatility playing as both a right-sided player and a striker, and is now West Ham’s club captain.

Jarrod Bowen celebrates for West Ham

Finding another player who can match this type of value of a signing, costing the club around £20m five years ago, is always going to be tough, but West Ham seem to have struck gold once more in those forward areas, with a signing they made in the 2023 summer window.

West Ham's game-changing signing

West Ham signed Mohammed Kudus from Ajax in August 2023, joining the club for a fee of around £38m. Since his arrival, the 24-year-old has made 72 appearances for the London club, netting 17 goals, providing eight assists, and totaling 5,634 minutes played.

The Ghana international was valued at €40m (£33.5m) when he first joined the club, according to Transfermarkt, but according to GIVEMESPORT, West Ham could be set to receive a huge bid of around £84m for their superstar, with Al-Nassr reportedly making him a key target.

Kudus hasn’t had the best 2024/25 campaign so far, struggling to find the same heights as his debut season for the Hammers, but as you can see from his underlying metrics, he still outperforms Bowen in select areas, producing more progressive carries and successful take-ons, which speak to his direct nature.

Analyst Ben Mattinson described Kudus as a “game-changer” back in May 2024, stating that the forward can be a brilliant cover for all five attacking positions, which is something we have already seen at West Ham, with Kudus playing off of both flanks and centrally under David Moyes, Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter.

Whilst Kudus may have cost a bit more than Bowen, but he is earning £60,000 less per week and is currently valued higher by Transfermarkt, making a good case for being their best signing since Bowen back in 2020 and showing that the Hammers hit the jackpot on the exciting forward.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Sancho is considering a move to Serie A, according to , after Chelsea opted against signing him permanently following an unsatisfactory season on loan at Stamford Bridge. Antony, meanwhile, is reported to be ready to accept a 30 percent pay cut in order to move away from United following his exceptional spell on loan at Real Betis. According to the , United must sell the Brazilian for a minimum of £32.58m to avoid making a loss on the deal the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Napoli and Juventus are the two Serie A clubs who have shown the most interest in Sancho, according to respected Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio. Napoli has proved a popular destination for United outcasts lately, with Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku firing Antonio Conte's side to the title last season.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Sancho moved to United from Borussia Dortmund for £74 million ($99m) in the summer of 2021 but the move has been an unmitigated disaster. The winger failed to impress in his first two campaigns and his third season effectively ended after a couple of his weeks after a furious spat with Erik ten Hag. He had an encouraging spell on loan back at Dortmund, helping them reach the Champions League final. However, his return to the Premier League did not go to plan, with Chelsea so reluctant to sign him permanently that they paid United £5m to get out of their obligation to buy him. Antony cost even more than Sancho, becoming United's second most expensive signing ever when he joined from Ajax for £85m. He left the club in January having scored only five Premier League goals in two-and-a-half seasons. He scored as many goals in half a season with Betis.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

United must sell Sancho and Antony in order to help finance their ambitious squad rebuild after finishing 15th in the Premier League last season. The club are also looking to sell Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho after both players fell out with Ruben Amorim. Matheus Cunha became the Red Devils' first signing of the summer earlier this month while the club are working on a deal to bring in Bryan Mbeumo and they are monitoring the situation of Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.

Australians at the IPL: Green's World Cup bid, Starc returns, Langer at Lucknow

T20 World Cup push for Cameron Green, Spencer Johnson

Twelve or perhaps 13 of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad are locked in. But national selector George Bailey has gone on record saying that IPL performances will be factored into the final decision-making of the spots up for grabs.Cameron Green and Spencer Johnson are at the top of the list with most to gain over the next few weeks. Green was deliberately allowed to focus on red-ball cricket ahead of the New Zealand Test series rather than playing the T20Is and the result was compelling with his 174 not out in Wellington. Part of the selectors’ thinking was they knew he would have a full IPL to work on his T20 game.Related

  • World Cup hero Travis Head arrives in India for the IPL

  • Delhi Capitals sign Fraser-McGurk as Ngidi's replacement

  • Green-powered RCB short on legspin and death-bowling options

  • No late Sheffield Shield final availability for IPL-bound Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh

“It’s a constant conversation with multi-format players, working out the priority at any given time, and making sure they get what they need but he’s certainly one whose name I think, as we are finalising that 15 for the World Cup, will be firmly in the mix,” Bailey said.If Green hits his straps for Royal Challengers Bangalore (providing he can make the XI), having been traded from Mumbai Indians, his all-round skillset will make him a compelling option. The question could be whether he covers more bases than Steven Smith.Cameron Green has been traded from Mumbai Indians to RCB•BCCI

Meanwhile, Johnson currently sits behind Nathan Ellis in the pace pecking order should Australia take just the four specialist quicks. However, Johnson is doing all he can to force the selectors’ hands having had an impressive BBL before bowling with pace and hostility against West Indies and, briefly, New Zealand. If he lives up to his AU$1.78 million price tag with Gujarat Titans he could be a compelling option.”It’s going to be tight for those last few spots, I don’t envy George’s [Bailey] position,” Matthew Wade said after the recent series against New Zealand. “I wouldn’t want to be picking the 15, there’s going to be a couple of unlucky players. But…there’s always injury around. Guys that are outside the 15 may get opportunities as well so we’re happy we’ve got so much depth.”

The return of Mitchell Starc

It’s been a long time between IPL outings for Mitchell Starc. Through a combination of injury and prioritising Test cricket, his last appearance came in 2015 where he was part of an RCB side with a top three of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Starc’s overall IPL record reads 34 wickets at 20.38 with an economy of 7.16 and in the 2015 season, he claimed 20 at 14.55 with an economy of just 6.76.This time Starc will be with Kolkata Knight Riders and returns to the competition having smashed the record for the highest price with an eye-watering AUD$4.43 million at the auction, shortly after team-mate Pat Cummins had set a new record himself.”No doubt there’ll be some pressure that comes with the territory, but having the extra experience I have from my last IPL hopefully helps,” Starc said shortly after the paddle came down.Given Australia’s focus on Tests and ODIs over the last 18 months, Starc’s recent two outings in the T20I series against New Zealand were his first in the format since the 2022 T20 World Cup.”There’s a T20 World Cup, it’s a nice lead-in to that with the IPL and the quality of cricket that tournament presents. In terms of the [Australia] schedule, it’s much more quiet,” he said after getting his IPL deal. “Instead of bowling in the nets in April and May – generally there’s no batter there – so it’s much more interesting to go and play in an IPL and test myself against the best.”0:45

New SRH captain Cummins banking on inputs from Head, Vettori

Weary bodies and minds

The schedule might be quieter internationally for Australia this winter, but the IPL is yet more cricket for some players who have had a packed couple of years. While there is a considerable gap after the T20 World Cup in June, there will be some fingers crossed that key names aren’t burnt out before that tournament finishes.Travis Head, who will appear for Sunrisers Hyderabad, is a player that comes to mind. After the highs of the ODI World Cup, where he raced against time to enter midway through due to his broken hand, his form tailed off significantly during the home summer with his century in Adelaide the only major contribution. He was given a break during the white-ball matches against West Indies but struggled in the Tests against New Zealand. He is pencilled in to have a key role at the top of the order in the T20 World Cup.”There’s a lot of stresses,” Australia coach Andrew McDonald said after the New Zealand Test series. “He was coming off a significant injury through that World Cup, and it takes a lot out of you mentally and physically. There’s no doubt we can learn some lessons on the back of Trav’s entry into all three formats and how to give him a bit of rest in the Australian summer.”Justin Langer returns to coaching in the IPL with Lucknow•CA/Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Justin Langer’s coaching comeback

Another interesting Australian angle at this year’s IPL is the return of Justin Langer to the coaching scene for the first time since his acrimonious exit from the national team. He will take charge of Lucknow Super Giants having replaced Andy Flower in the role.Langer will have a strong Western Australia flavour around him with Marcus Stoinis retained and WA and Perth Scorchers batter Ashton Turner picked up at the auction. However, Turner is coming off knee surgery that curtailed his domestic season. He has also brought WA and Perth Scorchers coach Adam Voges on as an assistant.Langer had outstanding success with Scorchers in the BBL and was in charge of Australia when they won the 2021 T20 World Cup. But it will be fascinating to see how he deals with the pressures of the IPL, particularly if LSG don’t make a good start.

Spurs filed a lawsuit against Ineos Automotive Limited earlier this month in the High Court and now the details of the dispute have been revealed by . Spurs accuse Ratcliffe's firm of breaching the five-year deal it signed in 2022, which was worth a minimum of £17.5m, to promote the Ineos Grenadier as the club's official 4×4 vehicle partner.

Spurs are claiming that Ineos failed to pay them the £5m-plus instalment that was due last December, having also not stumped up almost £500,000 the previous August. The north London club are also claiming at least £5,275,974 in damages after the deal was cut short with more than two years to go. The legal battle is the latest episode in a simmering rivalry between Tottenham and United. The teams met four times last season and Tottenham were triumphant on each occasion, most significantly in the Europa League final in Bilbao.

DID YOU KNOW?

INEOS have withdrawn from several sponsorship agreements recently in what they claim are the consequences of Europe's green initiatives. The firm stopped sponsoring Sir Ben Ainslie's sailing team earlier this year and also pulled out of a deal with the All Blacks rugby team. Ratcliffe has also overseen massive cutbacks at United, including making 450 staff members redundant.

Despite the cutbacks at United and by Ineos, Ratcliffe has approved the Red Devils committing to spend in the region of £130m on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Cunha has already arrived after United paid his £62.5m release clause while the 20-times English champions are close to striking a deal with Brentford for Mbeumo for an initial £60m plus £5m in add-ons. Any other signings are only likely to happen if United can generate extra revenue through player sales, although their unwanted players such as Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford are proving difficult to shift.

Rain wrecks third T20I between England and Pakistan

Teams left short on match practice ahead of World Cup after second washout of series

Matt Roller28-May-2024England and Pakistan will head to the T20 World Cup short on match practice after persistent rain wiped out Tuesday night’s match between them in Cardiff without a ball being bowled. It is the second abandonment of the series after the weather ruined Wednesday’s series opener in Leeds, with only 39.2 of the 120 scheduled overs bowled so far.Jos Buttler, England’s captain, did not travel to Cardiff and Moeen Ali would have led their side in his place if the game had taken place. Buttler left the squad on Saturday night following England’s 23-run win in Birmingham and travelled to London to be with his wife Louise, with the couple expecting their third child imminently.Mark Wood was due to play his first match since early March for England, while Sam Curran would also have featured after being left out on Saturday at Edgbaston. ESPNcricinfo understands that Jofra Archer would have been rested, with England taking a cautious approach to his workload after such a long injury lay-off.Buttler is expected to travel to Barbados with the rest of the England squad on Friday, and could even return to the squad in time to play in the final match of the series at The Oval on Thursday night. As things stand, the weather forecast for south London is not hugely promising as both sides hope for a final run-out before they travel, though should at least allow for a shortened match. With neither side due to play an official warm-up match between Thursday and their respective opening group-stage fixtures, they will be relatively undercooked compared to some teams at the World Cup. Pakistan have at least played regularly in this format recently, drawing 2-2 with New Zealand in April and beating Ireland 2-1 earlier this month; Saturday’s match was England’s only T20I since December 21.There was heavy rain early on Tuesday morning in Cardiff, which continued for much of the day. It briefly stopped during the afternoon but returned at around 5.15pm, repeatedly delaying the toss until umpires Mike Burns and Russell Warren abandoned the match at 8.12pm, much to the disappointment of a sold-out crowd.

8 shots, 0 goals: 5/10 Man Utd dud just proved why he'll get axed for Cunha

Manchester United just about managed to salvage a share of the points away at AFC Bournemouth on Sunday as Rasmus Hojlund broke free of his wretched luck in front of goal in the Premier League to rescue a 1-1 draw.

The Cherries were hanging onto their 1-0 slim lead after Evanilson saw red on the 70th minute mark and must have thought United’s wastefulness in attack was going to be their saving grace, only for the usually misfiring Dane to level the game right at the death.

Whilst the 22-year-old was the unlikely hero come the full-time whistle, a draw might still be deemed as an unsatisfactory result based on the away side’s lack of composure up top ,robbing them of a much-needed victory.

Man United's wasteful attackers vs Bournemouth

In total, Ruben Amorim’s men would notch up a hefty 25 shots on the Cherries’ goal, with Hojlund’s effort amazingly the only one that ended up beating the consistently switched-on Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Away from accumulating a stunning seven key passes to try and set up his teammates for opportunities, Bruno Fernandes will feel irked that he didn’t manage to beat Kepa like his Danish teammate, with three efforts unfortunately passing him by on the South Coast.

Likewise, Hojlund will feel somewhat annoyed that he couldn’t pick up a whole host of strikes, with the goal-shy number 9 failing to get involved in the contest for large portions of the 90 minutes, leading to his only effort on the day being the golden one that trickled in.

But, there was a far worse culprit than both of these attackers when it came to squandering chances against Andoni Iraola’s open hosts, with Amorim now clamouring for Wolverhampton Wanderers superstar Matheus Cunha’s signature even more so off the back of this underperformer lacking a clinical edge.

5/10 Man Utd could soon be replaced by Cunha

Whilst United’s wastefulness reared its ugly head once more during the 1-1 draw, Cunha showed off his spellbinding ability in attack again for Wolves at the weekend, with the ex-Atletico Madrid ace picking up a goal and two assists in his side’s convincing 3-0 takedown of Leicester City.

With it reported that the Brazilian could be on his way to Old Trafford, Fernandes would likely not be sacrificed for Cunha to take up a first-team spot.

As a result, his comrade in the attacking positions in Alejandro Garnacho could be the casualty, with his showing against Bournemouth leaving a lot to be desired.

As is outlined above, Garnacho is now up to a dire 14 big chances missed this season, with his game in the forward areas against Iraola’s men screaming of an attacker low on confidence when the heat is ramped up.

The South American forward ended the game having been handed a low 5/10 rating post-match by Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst and it was unsurprising to see why.

He fired a mammoth eight shots at the Cherries net without ever beating Kepa, meaning his goal count for the season in the Premier League is stuck at a paltry five. Furthermore, he won just four of his seven duels and gave away the ball 13 times, once every 3.7 touches.

Whereas, moving back to Molineux, Cunha finds himself on a mightily impressive 21 goal contributions for the campaign from 29 clashes, with Amorim well aware that the Brazilian’s arrival onto the scene would see Garnacho instantly drop out of the XI.

It remains to be seen whether United can win their desired man away from rampant speculation, but if they are successful in their pursuit, he could be one piece of the jigsaw that enables Amorim’s Red Devils to recapture their former glories.
