Zak Crawley: England 'need to stay positive' despite defeat to India

England opener says Bazballers still believe in their method

Andrew Miller28-Mar-2024Zak Crawley says that England will not allow their shortcomings in India to derail their positive approach to Test cricket but admits that a bit of “refinement” is needed to capitalise on their positions of dominance, such as the one that slipped through their fingers in the fourth Test in Ranchi last month.Speaking at the Kia Oval on the eve of the county season, Crawley insisted that England had never lost faith in their attacking methods, even though they were distinctly second-best by the time the series culminated in an innings defeat inside three days in Dharamsala. The 4-1 series scoreline, he added, could have been very different had England seized their opportunity in Ranchi. After two days of the fourth Test, India were facing a 100-plus first-innings deficit having slipped to 177 for 7 in reply to 353, only for Dhruv Jurel’s hard-fought 90 to turn the tide and allow his team’s spinners to put the pressure back on England.Related

Switch Hit: Dharamsala demolition

“We never really lost faith and had the same attitude, as you can tell from some of our press!” Crawley said, as he joked about some of the more outlandish expressions of optimism that came out of the England camp in the course of the tour.”We had the same attitude throughout and I don’t think that is arrogance. We genuinely believed in ourselves and thought we could win the series. We were in all the games. We certainly weren’t in the games when I was in India last time, so we gave ourselves a good chance and we weren’t quite clinical enough, like they were, to be fair.”We should have won in Ranchi to make it 2-2 and then you never know how the last one goes, but it is always hard to wrestle the momentum back. Over five days, their skills are always going to come out, and they are a phenomenal team. It was a really enjoyable tour though, we gave it a good crack, and there is a lot to learn from.”On a personal level, Crawley was pleased with his own performances, having been England’s leading performer for the second major series in a row, with 407 runs at 40.70 in the five Tests to go alongside his 480 at 53.33 in the Ashes. Given his struggles in the preceding two years, in which he had averaged 20.57 across 20 Tests between January 2021 and November 2022, that represented a significant uptick in fortunes.”Hopefully I can push on from here but I certainly feel in a better place now than I did at the start of last year,” Crawley said. “Whenever I try to maintain [my form], I think you start getting worse, so I am always looking to improve.”Against spin, I was trying to get forward to smother the ball and it kind of worked for me. My head is a lot further forward than it used to be in my set-up. But mainly it’s just my attitude. I am trying to embrace failure more and accepting it is part of the game. So, I’m trying to stick with that.”Although he made four scores between 60 and 79, Crawley was unable to hit the heights that he reached with his remarkable 189 from 182 balls at Old Trafford during the Ashes. Nevertheless, he was part of seven opening stands of 45 or more in the course of ten innings, as he and Ben Duckett consistently took the attack to India’s new-ball bowlers, including their outstanding quick Jasprit Bumrah.Crawley’s confidence against India’s seamers, particularly on the drive, continued a theme that began with his memorable first-ball four against Pat Cummins in the Ashes. And, in keeping with his role as the first batter in an aggressive line-up, he admitted that going toe-to-toe with the opposition attack leaders was very much part of his gameplan.”I was certainly conscious of that in the summer against the Aussies,” he said. “I just thought, ‘there are a couple of good balls in here, I just need to put them under pressure early’, so that was more of a conscious effort.”I feel like a bit more pace on the ball has always suited my game a little bit more,” he added. “I just think less when they’re bowling fast. You have to calm the brain and calm the mind and just react. That’s always suited me rather than the Tim Murtaghs of the world where you play seven different shots before it comes down and that has never been my forte, but I’ll try and get better at that as well.”Crawley revealed how he had undergone laser surgery at the age of 18 to correct a short-sightedness that had required him to use contact lens, adding that one of his practice techniques when younger had been to crank the bowling machine up to full speed and play the ball from halfway down the pitch. “It was only half-volleys but obviously 90mph would feel very slow by the time you go back,” he said.Crawley believes Bazball needs “a bit of refinement”•Getty ImagesEven so, the challenge of facing Bumrah, with his high pace, wide range of skills and idiosyncratic action, is not something that can be easily replicated in training.”I love facing the best bowlers in the world. Him, Cummins, a few others, but he would probably be the best I have faced,” Crawley said. “He bowls fast anyway and lets it go later, so it feels even quicker. Then it is just a weird action, so it is hard to pick up at times and he has got tremendous skill. He swings it both ways, with a slower-ball yorker, so, yeah, he’s a phenomenal bowler. It was tricky but I loved it.”Though he stood out among England’s batters, Crawley’s series record still paled against that of his opposite number Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose 712 runs included back-to-back double-centuries in Visakhapatnam and Rajkot. But, he said, those efforts didn’t necessarily make him more hungry for big scores, because his best cricket invariably comes when he limits his focus to one ball at a time.”Whenever I have looked too far ahead like that, that is how you get out straight away,” Crawley said. “Actually, a couple of those occasions I was thinking, ‘I need to get a big score’ and I wasn’t in the process. That is why – as simple as that – I got out.”At Old Trafford in the summer, I was just trying to bat and bat time, I wasn’t thinking about getting a hundred. I was very present and it’s quite hard to get into that mindset. Whenever I’ve got into that mindset, I’ve managed to get a decent score, and if I got ahead of myself, I haven’t.”England do not play another Test series until the arrival of West Indies in July, and so there is plenty time for the players to absorb the lessons of the India series.”It just needs a bit of refinement,” Crawley said. “We always talk about absorbing pressure and putting pressure back on. The last couple of years we’ve done the putting back on pretty well, and we’ve spoken about maybe picking those moments to absorb at the right times as well. We can certainly refine that.”That’s not to say we’re going to get more negative. We will still try to play the way we have and try to score quickly, but just pick those moments where they’re on top. We need to make sure we stay positive and don’t let a tough result get in the way of what we’re done really well over the last couple of years.”[India] have won 17 home series on the spin, so it would have had to be pretty special for us to turn it over and we will not get too down on ourselves. We’ll still stick to what we know but just be slightly better.”

Tosin upgrade: Chelsea eyeing £25m Huijsen alternative as priority target

da bet7: Chelsea were one of the clubs that were reportedly interested in a deal to sign Spain international Dean Huijsen from Premier League rivals Bournemouth in the upcoming summer transfer window.

da aviator aposta: The Blues have missed out on a swoop for the central defender, though, as Real Madrid have officially signed him from the Cherries for £50m, which was the value of his release clause.

Not all is lost for the Premier League giants, however, as they are reportedly eyeing up a swoop for an alternative to the soon-to-be Real Madrid star.

Chelsea eyeing deal for Dean Huijsen alternative

According to a report from Spain, Huijsen was the main target for Chelsea in the centre-back position, but they are now lining up a swoop for Lazio titan Mario Gila.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The outlet claims that the former Real Madrid academy graduate is emerging as the priority target for the Blues after they missed out on the Bournemouth star to the Spanish giants.

It reveals that Lazio are set to demand a fee of £25m for the 24-year-old central defender, which is said to not be an issue for Chelsea from a financial perspective.

With all of this in mind, the club must now act on their ‘priority’ target by swooping to sign the Spaniard from the Serie A outfit for a fee of £25m, because he could come in as a big upgrade on Tosin Adarabioyo this summer.

Why Chelsea should sign Mario Gila

Signed from Fulham on a free transfer last summer, the English defender has started 14 of his 21 appearances in the Premier League, but Chelsea could sign an even better centre-back by landing Gila.

The Lazio star has averaged 2.7 tackles and interceptions and 4.9 duels won per game in the Serie A this season, whilst Tosin has only averaged 1.3 tackles and interceptions and 3.2 duels won per match in the Premier League this term.

Chelsea's TosinAdarabioyocelebrates after the match

These statistics suggest that Gila could come in as a defensive upgrade on the current Chelsea centre-back due to his ability to win more tackles, interceptions, and duels per game to cut out opposition attacks.

The Blues, however, are a ball-dominant team that also need centre-backs who are good enough on the ball to build attacks for Enzo Maresca, which the Lazio colossus certainly is.

As you can see in the table above, Gila is more progressive, as a passer and a carrier, from a central defensive position than Tosin is, with far more progressive passes and carries per 90 over the last 365 days.

Therefore, the £25m-rated defender could come in as a big upgrade on the former Fulham man because he could offer more to the team as an out-and-out defender and as a progressive option in possession.

Essex triumph in rain-ruined game at Lord's

Essex Eagles claimed their third successive Vitality Blast victory after overcoming Middlesex by 16 runs in their heavily rain-affected South Group game at Lord’s.The visitors reached 129 for 4 after 12.4 overs, with Jordan Cox unbeaten on 31 from 19 balls when a heavy downpour enveloped the ground.Middlesex’s target was revised to 143 from 12 overs – and subsequently 80 from six after another rain stoppage, but that unlikely equation proved beyond their reach.Despite a valiant effort by Max Holden, who hammered an undefeated 41 from 24, the home side fell short on 63 for two. After an initial 25-minute delay due to earlier showers, Adam Rossington immediately set about Middlesex’s bowling in the powerplay with two sizzling cover boundaries off Tom Helm.Rossington bludgeoned his way to 20 before slicing Noah Cornwell into the hands of deep third and the young left-armer, who took 2 for 29, also castled Michael Pepper (23 from 12), swinging across the line.Dean Elgar (28 from 17) was next to depart, with Luke Hollman taking a skier off his own bowling, but Cox looked assured straight away, dispatching his first ball for four with a classy straight drive.Although Ryan Higgins bowled Walter around his legs, pinpoint placement brought Cox successive boundaries off Blake Cullen and he also launched Hollman into the grandstand before rain returned, resulting in a delay of more than an hour. When the pitch covers were eventually removed, Holden and Stephen Eskinazi had barely taken guard when another heavy shower descended and the players left the field without a ball being bowled. The equation morphed into 80 from six overs when the game’s final instalment began and Eskinazi did his best to sustain Middlesex’s pursuit, hitting successive Shane Snater balls for four and six. However, Walter effectively settled the contest by capturing the wickets of Eskinazi and Higgins during his first over, which went for just four runs – and, although Holden kept the battle going, it was not enough.

£15m player set for summer chance to join Fulham after failed January talks

Fulham were on the verge of signing one player in January, and according to a new report, it is now believed he’ll have a second chance to join the west Londoners when the summer transfer window opens.

Fulham still in race for Europe as Marco Silva attracts interest

A topsy-turvy, inconsistent run of form in recent weeks hasn’t completely ruled Fulham out of the race for European qualification, but Marco Silva will be hoping to get the very best out of his players over a run of games which could make or break their season.

The games don’t get any easier for Fulham either, with Silva set to host west London rivals Chelsea this Sunday, in what could be deemed their most important Premier League game of the season to date.

So much is on the line this weekend, as Fulham could both seize the derby bragging rights and seriously strengthen their candidacy for a place in Europe next season.

This all comes amid serious interest in Silva from rival sides, with the Portuguese impressing at Craven Cottage yet again this term and drawing admiration from London neighbours Tottenham, who could end up sacking current boss Ange Postecoglou after a torrid campaign.

Silva is emerging as a frontrunner for the Spurs job, according to talkSPORT, with Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola leaning more towards signing a new deal at the Vitality Stadium.

However, Fulham vice-chairman Tony Khan is adamant the Whites want him to remain.

“Marco is a huge, huge asset to Fulham Football Club,” said Khan.

“He is such an amazing person, and he is so important to the football club. Marco has a great relationship with my father and myself, and we really love Marco, and we want him to stay at Fulham Football Club forever. He is a huge part of what we have got going for the future and the present, and he is a great man.”

Fulham given second chance to sign AC Milan forward Samuel Chukwueze

If Silva does stay, he’ll have major input when it comes to the club’s transfer plans.

According to Italian journalist Antonio Vitiello, speaking to Milan News, AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze could come back into Fulham’s thinking after he nearly “packed his bags” and joined them in the winter.

AC Milan's SamuelChukwuezecelebrates

The Nigeria international was on the verge of a move, but both Milan and Fulham couldn’t complete a deal on time. However, as per Vitiello, there will be much more time to iron out an agreement for the “quality” Nigeria international over the summer instead.

“Milan has put Chukwueze up for sale after two years of anonymity,” said Vitiello.

“He is one of the transferable ones on the market after he almost packed his bags in January to join Fulham. The deal fell through due to a question of time, but in the three summer months there will be plenty of time to find a solution.”

The 25-year-old has bagged eight goals and four assists in 65 appearances since joining the Rossoneri, but did impress a lot at previous club Villarreal. Chukwueze is also yet to reach his peak, so there is every reason to believe he could resurrect his career at Fulham.

Reports in Africa claim the cost to sign Chukwueze permanently stands at around £15 million.

The end for Partey: Arsenal make world-class £51m star their priority signing

It was another semi-final defeat on Wednesday night for Arsenal and, as a result, another season that’ll end trophyless.

It was always going to be a tough challenge for Mikel Arteta’s side to overturn their first-leg defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain, but to lose 2-1 on the night just makes it all the more painful.

Moreover, while the visitors started the first half pretty well, they soon faded, and while they played with some real heart, a number of players just didn’t perform well enough.

One of those was Thomas Partey, who picked up a 3/10 match rating from Alex Turk of the Express, and while there was talk of a contract renewal, there have also been links to a certain international who could join this summer and send him packing.

Arsenal transfer news

Before getting to the player in question, it is worth taking a look at some of the other midfield stars Arsenal have been linked with in recent weeks, like Hugo Larsson and Eduardo Camavinga.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former is still only 20 years old but has already become an established starter at Eintracht Frankfurt and could reportedly cost up to £51m, while the latter was sent off against the Gunners in the first leg of Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final with the club, but with a release clause of £1bn, who knows how much he’d cost.

Fortunately, another international midfielder heavily linked with the North Londoners has a far more reasonable release clause and could be the ideal Partey replacement: Martin Zubimendi.

Yes, according to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal are still incredibly keen on signing the Real Sociedad star this summer, with Arteta making him a ‘top reinforcement priority.’

While interest from Real is far from ideal, reports from elsewhere claiming the Spaniard has a release clause worth £51m could and should make signing him far more straightforward for the North Londoners.

It might still be a lot of money, but Zubimendi has proven his ability over several years now, and as he could be the perfect Partey replacement, Arsenal should do all they can to bring him to N5.

How Zubimendi compares to Partey

So then, if Arsenal are able to sign Zubimendi this summer, there is no doubt he’d come in and play the position Partey has this season, but how does he stack up to the veteran?

Is he good enough to send him packing in the summer without a new contract?

Well, given their position on the pitch and what their primary roles are, their raw output is not all that important.

Instead, the best way to better understand how they truly stack up against one another is to look under the hood at their relevant underlying numbers.

When doing this, it’s evident that while the former Atlético Madrid star does have the advantage in some areas, the bread and butter of a number six, the defensive work, is done far better by the San Sebastian-born star.

For example, the “world-class” defensive midfielder, as dubbed by former teammate Kieran Tierney, comes out on top in essential metrics like blocked shots and passes, interceptions, aerial duels won, clearances made, and he even makes fewer mistakes that lead to a shot, all per 90.

On top of this statistical advantage, the “elite” international, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, is also five and a half years the Ghanaian’s junior and has a far healthier injury record.

For example, across his entire career, the Basque star has missed just ten games for club and country, whereas the Gunners’ number five has missed a staggering 88, so no matter how available he’s been this year, you can never truly rely on him in the long run.

Ultimately, from his defensive output to his availability and age, it’s clear that Zubimendi would be the perfect player to come in and replace Partey this summer, in turn making a new contract for the 31-year-old redundant.

Arsenal offer "game-changer" a five-year contract worth nearly £30m to join

This summer’s mini-transfer window, open from June 1 to June 10, presents an opportunity for Premier League sides to get deals done very early ahead of pre-season, and Arsenal could take full advantage.

Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville, speaking after Arsenal were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United earlier this year, drew particular attention to their “toothlessness” in the forward areas – going on to state that they simply must spend big again this summer.

“This has shown a massive spotlight on the toothlessness of Arsenal’s forward players compared to what we’re seeing at the other end of the pitch,” said Neville.

“That’s a given. They have to [spend this summer].

“I was supportive of them not panicking in the window, finding the player they want, I get that. But when the bid went in for Ollie Watkins, they are sending a message to the rest of the squad, the ones up front aren’t good enough, this game confirms it.”

The arrival of new sporting director Andrea Berta is set to play a pivotal role in their pursuit of attacking upgrades for the squad, and reliable media sources are already claiming that the Italian has got to work.

The north Londoners recently opened talks over a deal for Real Madrid forward Rodrygo, which has since stalled due to wage demands (Florian Plettenberg), with Arsenal also holding “concrete” negotiations to sign striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

Arsenal offer Viktor Gyokeres a five-year contract worth nearly £30m

Sesko isn’t their only option to reinforce the centre-forward area, though, with Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres also heavily linked in the last month.

Portuguese news outlets in particular have reported in the last fortnight that Arsenal are making serious progress on a move for Gyokeres, with newspaper O Jogo even claiming that they’ve agreed a fee.

While that rumour is yet to gain traction, another Portuguese media source, Correio de Manha, has come forward with a significant update of their own.

The newspaper states Arsenal have offered Gyokeres a five-year contract worth nearly £30 million, with the Swede handed an annual salary worth £5.9 million-per-year.

They’ve also apparently offered Sporting around £59 million for his signature, which is still slightly below his reported asking price of around £63 million, so it will be intriguing to see if this proposal gets off the ground.

Gyokeres’ 54 goals in all competitions this season indicates that he’s a fine candidate to resolve Arsenal’s lack of cutting edge in the attacking areas, and Sporting boss Rui Borges certainly has little doubt about the 26-year-old, even if there’s a case to be made that the Primeria Liga is inferior to English top flight football.

“I have said this before, and I will continue to say it: he brings a lot to the team, and his teammates are aware of what he contributes, which is why they look for him during games,” said Borges about Gyokeres.

“The collective effort also plays a role, as no one can succeed alone. Viktor is a game-changer, and he will continue to be, whether with us or elsewhere. His quality is undeniable; it is phenomenal.”

Kedar Jadhav falls for 99, Rajasthan in sight of quarter-finals

Shubman Gill made the highest score of the season so far, Hardik Pandya continued to shine, and both J&K and Kerala won

Saurabh Somani16-Dec-2018Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya had grabbed the spotlight on day two of the sixth round of Ranji Trophy 2018-19, and both continued to hold sway on the third day too. Kedar Jadhav, however, faced a double heartbreak, for both himself and his team. Three more matches were decided, with Kerala back to winning ways, getting a bonus point against Delhi. The two that had been fascinatingly poised on the second day ended in favour of Jammu & Kashmir and Rajasthan.

Contrasting stories for Rajasthan and J&K
Rajasthan have almost sealed one of the top-two spots in Group C with their fourth straight win, beating Odisha by 35 runs. Rajasthan now have 34 points in six games. The two sides below Rajasthan in the points table, Jharkhand (24 points) and Uttar Pradesh (21 points), are engaged in a match with each other. Each one has two games left after that, while Rajasthan have one. Rajasthan have been in terrific form however, and look set to march on. In this match, Odisha had a target of 173 but in match where the highest score till then was 148, that was a tough ask. Odisha still made a fist of it, but Aniket Choudhary continued his good form with another five-wicket haul to make it ten for the match, bowling them out for 137. It was the second successive narrow loss for Odisha, who had gone down by just two runs against Jharkhand in the previous round.J&K on the other hand, put behind the disappointment of a season of narrow defeats to beat Haryana by 130 runs. On 49 for 4 overnight, Haryana were bowled out for 91. Irfan Pathan had taken all four wickets on the second day and added a fifth. It marked a much-needed turnaround by J&K. Earlier in the season, they had suffered heartbreaks. Bowled out for 95 against Services, they fought back with 261 in the second innings but didn’t have enough in the tank to prevent a defeat. Then against Uttar Pradesh, they took a 102-run first-innings lead only to collapse in the second innings and lose.Kerala meanwhile, returned to winning ways, shooting out Delhi for 154 to complete an innings win and get not only their first bonus point win of the season but also leave behind the defeats of the previous two rounds. Kerala had missed out on a bonus point in two previous wins, losing a wicket while chasing a target below 50. Kerala’s upswing coincided with Jalaj Saxena turning in another good show after two quiet matches. He took nine wickets in the match, and hit a half-century.

Gill’s monumental knock, Pandya’s battle
Shubman Gill was on 199 overnight, and he looked good for a triple once he had gone past his double, until a nicely flighted ball by R Sai Kishore had him coming down the track to be stumped for 268. Gill did have the satisfaction of making the season’s highest score, one run more than Ajay Rohera made during his record-breaking debut in the last round.Hardik Pandya, meanwhile, added 73 but Baroda’s first innings ended at 436, just short of Mumbai’s 465. Baroda will have to be satisfied with just one point unless Hardik can engineer a victory on the final day. He’s already taken two wickets while giving just four runs in six overs, with Mumbai ending the day on 20 for 2.

The Jadhav heartbreak
Overnight on 38, Kedar Jadhav was out for 99 against Saurashtra in his first Ranji match of the season, and to make matters worse, Maharashtra failed to beat the follow-on mark, bowled out 151 runs behind. New Saurashtra captain Jaydev Unadkat – there’s still a Jaydev leading the team – enforced the follow-on and Maharashtra were 157 for 3, though Jadhav hadn’t come out to bat for a second time yet.

Blistering bowling, and the other KohliIndia Under-19 left-arm spinner Harsh Tyagi, who will turn 19 in a week, picked up a career-best 7 for 41 as Railways fought back against defending champions Vidarbha. Having conceded a first-innings lead of 95, Railways rode on Tyagi to bowl out Vidarbha for 147. Set 243 for victory, Railways were 19 for 1, and it’s anybody’s game on the final day.Other bowlers who had a good day were Jharkhand’s fast-bowling pair of Rahul Shukla and Varun Aaron. Shukla took 5 for 65 and Aaron had 4 for 59 as Uttar Pradesh were bowled out for 243, giving Jharkhand a 111-run first-innings lead. These two sides being second and third in Group C and the league phase entering the home stretch, the outcome of this match is vital for both.In the Plate Group, Taruwar Kohli had a heroic day, but Mizoram are facing defeat against Sikkim regardless. Known as the “other Kohli” – he was part of the 2008 Under-19 World Cup team under Virat – Taruwar had moved to Mizoram this season as a professional. He has single-handedly kept Mizoram alive in this match, though they are struggling at 162 for 8, with Taruwar batting on 105 and the target of 341 far away. In Sikkim’s second innings, Taruwar took career-best figures of 5 for 39, and one of his scalps was that of Milind Kumar, the 1000-run man, out for his first duck of the season. In addition, Taruwar had also made 74 out of Mizoram’s 161 in the first innings.

Birmingham Phoenix secure eliminator spot after wet 30-ball thrash

Phoenix to play Southern Brave in eliminator; Oval Invincibles head straight to Lord’s final

ECB Media15-Aug-2024Birmingham Phoenix will meet Southern Brave in The Hundred Eliminator at The Kia Oval on Saturday after a nine-wicket victory over Manchester Originals.Moeen Ali’s side came out on top in a 30-ball-per-side match at Edgbaston, earning themselves the point they needed after rain delayed the start.Phoenix chased down their target of 42 with ease, Jamie Smith depositing Fazalhaq Farooqi over the boundary twice in the first five balls to set the tone for the chase. After a quieter second five from Farooqi, Ben Duckett smashed Tom Aspinwall’s first ball for six and then hit three of his next four to the boundary as the rain teemed down in Birmingham, the umpires remaining unmoved, determined to see the game to a result.Smith (14) was caught on the cover boundary by Sikandar Raza off Scott Currie, but Duckett (22*) and Moeen (6*) knocked off the remaining seven runs required with eight balls to spare, the skipper securing the win with a six off Currie over fine-leg.Winning the toss and bowling first, Birmingham Phoenix struck early, Kiwi speedster Adam Milne removing Matthew Hurst from the second legal delivery of the match when the young Lancastrian skied a chance to Liam Livingstone at mid-on.Milne’s compatriot Tim Southee took the second set and was immediately smashed into the stands by Phil Salt. He was then sliced over short-third by Max Holden from the final ball of the powerplay as the Originals took their score to 15 for 1.At the halfway point of the innings, the Originals were 22 for 2, Salt (12) mistiming a cross-bat shot off Milne from the 15th ball of the innings to give Livingstone his second catch of the evening.Sean Abbott then accounted for Paul Walter (1), caught at deep cover, to make it 24 for 3. Holden (15) continued to swing hard, the left-hander top-edging Southee for another boundary, but his luck soon ran out when he failed to go over mid-off as Livingstone held onto a third catch.Chris Wood closed out the innings, conceding just three runs and taking the wicket of Raza, caught by Jacob Bethell at deep midwicket as Originals closed on 41 for 5, hitting just one six in their innings.Phoenix had just 42 to chase to earn a trip to South London and they did it with ease, ensuring Andrew Flintoff’s first year as Northern Superchargers Head Coach would end with a fourth-place finish.Meerkat Match Hero Milne, who took 2 for 8, said: “To come out of the shortened game and into The Hundred Eliminator is very good for us.”There was a little bit of swing and seam so it was nice to use that first up, but in these shortened games anything can happen, so [you] just mix it up.”Anytime it’s moving around off the straight it’s nice. There’s been lots said but as a bowler it’s nice to have a little bit going your way sometimes in these shorter formats, there can be flat wickets and not much movement, so it’s nice to see a bit of swing and seam occasionally.”

Winners and losers as Man City's shock Club World Cup exit exposes scale of Pep Guardiola's rebuild despite Phil Foden and new signings impressing in the U.S.

The Cityzens are heading home from the tournament far earlier than expected after paying a heavy price for their wasted chances against Al-Hilal

In the words of chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Manchester City viewed the Club World Cup as "a very, very serious competition", and they were going there to win it. The team's ruthless performances in the group stage showed he meant it, too. But after an enthralling 120 minutes against Al-Hilal in the last 16, City are already heading back to Manchester, digesting a chastening and embarrassing elimination from the tournament.

Make no mistake about it, City crashing out in the first round of the knockout stage to a team from outside of Europe is a massive, massive shock and a huge disappointment. Khaldoon and his fellow executives will also be cursing their early elimination both in naked financial terms and for the damage it does to their reputation of being the best team on the planet.

The tournament was supposed to be a fresh start for City after a terrible 2024-25 season as they aimed to avenge their rare trophy-less campaign. However, they were given an important reminder that Pep Guardiola's rebuild is far from complete and that it will take more time and likely even more money spent in the transfer market to give the coach the team he wants to wrestle back the Premier League crown they surrendered to Liverpool last season.

Yet there are some silver linings from City's two-week stay in the United States, and while the wounds of their elimination will take some time to heal, they might well look back upon this tournament as the first step towards re-establishing their dominance of English football.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Man City's showing at the Club World Cup…

    WINNER: Phil Foden

Phil Foden said at the start of the tournament that "the hunger is back inside of me and I want to prove people wrong". He has done exactly that, and while Foden will be frustrated to be heading home so early having started just one of the four games, City's golden boy can take a lot of pride from his displays in the U.S.

In just 179 minutes of action across four games, Foden contributed to as many goals as he did in the entirety of last season's Champions League campaign, and nearly half the amount he managed in the Premier League. Foden's xtra-time equaliser against Al-Hilal was a goal of real quality and a reminder of his technical brilliance, while it sent out a message to Guardiola that he should have started the game.

Foden ended last season worn out physically and mentally, but he has got his swagger back, and with another break coming up he should be firing on all cylinders when the new season starts up.

    LOSER: Pep Guardiola

Guardiola can accept defeat when he knows his side did not deserve to win, but he understandably finds it hard to take when his side have done everything right yet have lost due to their inability to take their chances. The defeat to Al-Hilal was one of those days.

There were shades here of City's galling defeat to Lyon in the 2020 Champions League quarter-finals, as they created so many openings yet failied to beat the outstanding goalkeeper Yassine Bounou on too many occasions. The Morocco No.1 saved from Ilkay Gundogan, Josko Gvardiol and Savinho while Erling Haaland saw his late effort in normal time scrambled off the line. And just like against Lyon, City were undone by rapid counter-attacks and their own poor defending.

The backline remains a big concern ahead of the new campaign, and even though right-back is the club's priority in the transfer market, they might now want to look for another centre-back after rusty displays from Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake.

    WINNER: New signings

City were in a real hurry to do their transfer business before the tournament, and despite crashing out earlier than expected, the initial signs are that they have spent very wisely.

Rayan Ait-Nouri's twisting runs against Juventus had fans cooing and he looks set to add vibrancy to City's play in a way not really seen from their full-backs since Joao Cancelo, who played his part in Al-Hilal's shock victory.

Rayan Cherki also showed flashes of what he can offer, setting up Foden's goal against Al-Hilal and scoring in the drubbing of Al Ain. Granted, he will have to curb some elements of his game to earn Guardiola's trust, above all his tendency for trickery which sometimes leads to him losing possession, but he also offers a spark that will be very useful when trying to break down stubborn opponents.

Tijjani Reijnders has shone the brightest of the three new arrivals, though, after showcasing his ability to control the play and split open defences. He wants to be the heir to Gundogan as a high-scoring, box-to-box midfielder, and he has got off to an excellent start.

And so while the trio would have loved to have picked up their first medals with their new club at the Club World Cup, they have already begun settling in.

    LOSER: The City brand

Even if Guardiola had understandable concerns about his players' welfare at the tournament, City's executives were delighted to be at the Club World Cup. Of course they were. As well as offering the chance to earn $150 million (£108m) in prize money for just a month's work, the tournament gave City an opportunity to further boost their already soaring brand in the U.S., as well as raise their profile in other foreign markets.

As chief executive Ferran Soriano put it: "It’s very important to be here because we are a global football club. We have our roots and we are proud of them. But you can be local and relevant and faithful to the history of the club and the fans that support you, but you can also be global and show what we do – which we believe is beautiful football – to the world."

Despite an excellent start and the sight of tens of thousands of City shirts at each of their games, their early exit will be seen as a massive failure. City thought they had done the hard part by avoiding Real Madrid in the last 16, and so losing to Al-Hilal is hugely embarrassing, especially as their opponents were without captain Salem Al-Dawsari and prolific striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

The early exit also hits City hard in the pocket. The loss to Al-Hilal cost them $13.7m, and they would have backed themselves to have gotten past quarter-final opponents Fluminense – who they destroyed 4-0 in the 2023 Club World Cup final – and reached the semis, which would have seen them earn an additional $21m. Instead they go home with an estimated $51.7m, less than they had budgeted for (reaching the quarters) and roughly one-third of the amount they would have earned for winning the lot.
