Arsenal's Top 25 Champions League Moments (Ranked)

It seemed like forever that Arsenal had been away from the Champions League before their return to the competition in 2023, allowing them to make more memories in the famous competition.

From squeezing through the group stages to making the final in dramatic circumstances, the north Londoners have had plenty of memorable moments under the lights since making their debut in 1998.

Football FanCast has ranked 25 of the Gunners’ best Champions League moments.

Arsenal are back as Champions League contenders – here’s how their overall record stands.

ByStephan Georgiou May 15, 2025 25 2005/06: Arsenal 2-1 FC Thun Bergkamp rescues Arsenal late on

Champions League minnows FC Thun were plying their trade in non-league eight years prior to this fixture and were expected to be rolled over with ease. But it certainly didn’t pan out like that.

Arsenal had to play with 10 men for much of the match after Robin van Persie received a straight red card for catching Alen Orman in the face with his boot.

The Gunners found themselves frustrated by the Swiss outfit and appeared to be heading towards a shock draw before Dennis Bergkamp struck home a dramatic stoppage-time winner to spare his side’s blushes.

24 2000/01: Arsenal 2-1 Valencia Parlour screamer downs Valencia

Arsenal came back from 1-0 down against La Liga giants Valencia to secure a 2-1 victory in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Thierry Henry levelled the score in the 58th minute before Ray Parlour netted a thunderous strike from distance two minutes later to put the north Londoners ahead.

Unfortunately, the second leg saw the Spanish side advance on away goals after winning 1-0 at the Mestalla.

Valencia went on to reach the final before suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Bayern Munich on penalties.

23 2003/04: Arsenal 1-0 Dynamo Kyiv Ashley Cole keeps Gunners alive

Bonfire Night in 2003 produced an electrifying atmosphere at Highbury after Ashley Cole netted an 88th-minute winner to clinch a 1-0 victory against Dynamo Kyiv.

The all-important result kept Arsenal’s Champions League dreams afloat as they went on to win their final two group games to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

The Gunners reached the quarter-finals before suffering a late 3-2 aggregate defeat to London rivals Chelsea.

22 2005/06: Arsenal 1-0 Villarreal Highbury bids farewell to CL nights

Kolo Toure’s first-half strike was enough to seal a 1-0 win against Villarreal in the semi-finals of the Champions League, in a game that saw a squirrel famously invade the field of play.

It was also Arsenal’s final European fixture at Highbury, so the victory was a fitting farewell to the historic stadium.

Wenger’s men went on to reach the Champions League final after holding the Spaniards to a goalless draw in the second leg at El Madrigal.

21 2002/03: PSV 0-4 Arsenal Gilberto and Arsenal thrash PSV

Arsenal secured a thumping 4-0 away victory against PSV in the group stages of the 2002/03 competition. Gilberto Silva broke the record for the fastest Champions League goal after netting inside 21 seconds.

Thierry Henry scored a late brace and Freddie Ljungberg also found himself on the scoresheet to complete the demolition job in the Netherlands.

Dennis Bergkamp also played in his first European away game in two years.

20 2013/14: Arsenal 2-0 Napoli Mesut Özil truly arrives

The summer of 2013 saw Arsenal obliterate their transfer record to sign Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Özil for a whopping £42.4m.

The German’s first goal in Arsenal colours came in their Champions League opener against Napoli as he beautifully caressed home a side-footed effort from just inside the box.

Özil scored seven goals whilst laying on 14 assists in his debut campaign in north London, so not bad going…

19 2024/25: PSV 1-7 Arsenal Gunners enjoy another great night in Eindhoven

Arsenal’s placing in the revamped Champions League group phase meant a last-16 tie against PSV, who had beaten Liverpool and Juventus on their way to sealing their own knockout stage berth.

But those hoping for a close game were quickly disappointed, as the Gunners raced out of the blocks to lead 3-0 inside 31 minutes.

Arsenal didn’t take their foot off the gas in the second half, putting another four past their opponents to make the second leg a formality. It was their biggest away victory in the Champions League.

The 11 biggest wins in the knockout stages of the Champions League

Arsenal recently joined a list of the best team performances in Champions League history after their 7-1 win against PSV.

ByStephan Georgiou Mar 5, 2025 18 2001/02: Arsenal 4-1 Bayer Leverkusen Eventual finalists played off the park

Arsenal played the would-be runners-up Bayer Leverkusen off the park as the French trio of Robert Pires, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira all got themselves on the scoresheet.

But it was the Dutchman Bergkamp who scored the pick of the goals as he turned his man on the edge of the area and cheekily dinked the ball over the helpless Hans-Jörg Butt.

Despite a dazzling display by the Gunners, they were dumped out of the competition in the second group phase after finishing third.

17 2007/08: Arsenal 7-0 Slavia Prague Gunners turn on style against Slavia

Wenger’s men completely dominated their Czech opponents as they recorded the club’s biggest-ever Champions League victory. The fluidity of the play was a joy to watch, and some of the goals scored were out of this world.

The Gunners came second to Sevilla in their group that year and reached the last eight of the competition before suffering a 5-3 aggregate defeat by Liverpool. A cruel exit for the north Londoners.

Football purists will certainly enjoy watching this highlight reel below.

16 2005/06: Arsenal 0-0 Real Madrid Gunners hold Real at Highbury to complete epic victory

After sealing a historic 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu, Arsenal still had to fend off Real Madrid on their own patch to seal a quarter-final place back in 2006.

In an even game, the Gunners held their own against their fancied opponents once again, with Thierry Henry mesmeric as ever as Arsene Wenger’s side held on.

Madrid came closest when Raul was extraordinarily denied by Jens Lehmann with the goal at his mercy.

Man City register interest to sign £205k-p/w PSG star who Pep called "top"

Manchester City may have one eye on the Club World Cup this summer, though they are refusing to relent in their pursuit of additions and could now be in a position to land one of PSG’s leading stars.

Man City's changing dynamics this summer

The end of a trophyless campaign for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City appears to have only fueled his desire to ensure his side doesn’t end up empty-handed next time out.

Fortunately, the Club World Cup will offer a quickfire chance to atone for a year without silverware alongside a bounty of nearly £100 million for the eventual winners of the competition.

Of course, Manchester City are hardly struggling for cash. Still, a sizeable extra windfall would allow more room for manoeuvre in their quest to rejuvenate a squad that will see some experienced figures depart over the summer.

Kevin De Bruyne appears to be on his way to Napoli and bows out as possibly the Citizens’ greatest ever player, leaving a void to be filled not only in the engine room but in terms of leadership.

Jack Grealish could be on his way to Tottenham Hotspur after becoming a spare part. Although his influence has waned in recent times, there is no doubt that his experience has helped to set a culture of success inside the Manchester City dressing room.

Hugo Viana makes £40m+ Man City offer to sign Brazilian ahead of Man Utd

The Citizens are looking to steal a march on their rivals…

BySean Markus Clifford May 30, 2025

AC Milan star Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri could arrive to work under Guardiola. Nevertheless, their prospective moves don’t undermine the need for stars capable of producing match-winning moments to arrive, no matter where they may feature on the pitch.

Man City eye surprise Gianluigi Donnarumma move

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester City have made contact over a move for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma if number one Ederson is sold this summer.

The Brazil international is attracting interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League and could be allowed to leave for just over £25 million if appropriate offers come in.

On the other hand, former AC Milan star Donnarumma is in the middle of a contract wrangle with Paris Saint-Germain and is also being tracked by Arsenal, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Juventus, with City also registering their interest.

Intriguingly, he has been labelled a “top goalkeeper” by Guardiola back in 2017 and won’t have done himself any harm after picking up the Champions League trophy last weekend.

Speaking about his future at the French giants, Donnarumma stated: “New deal or leaving? We will see what happens… I don’t know.

‘It’s time to enjoy this magic season now. I will go on holiday and then we will see.”

From a Manchester City standpoint, that doesn’t sound like a man who has completely ruled out the prospect of playing elsewhere next term. Now, it is over to their recruitment staff to try and tempt the £205,000 per week earner to English shores.

Glory against all odds – six times the underdogs had all the fun

India’s triumph in the 1983 World Cup, South Africa’s ambush of England in 1905-06, Sri Lanka’s other fairy tale and more

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Feb-2019Zimbabwe winning in Pakistan 1998-99Zimbabwe had only won two Test matches in their history – both of them at home – when they set off to tour Pakistan, but those with a nose for these things quickly caught the scent of an upset. With the Justice Qayyum inquiry casting a shadow over Pakistani cricket, Aamer Sohail was preferred to Wasim Akram – one of the players under investigation – as captain, but he only lasted one Test before withdrawing, supposedly through illness but amid rumours of disagreements with the coach and selectors. Zimbabwe’s victory in the first Test, in Peshawar, was built on Neil Johnson’s fighting hundred before Heath Streak, Henry Olonga and Pommie Mbangwa combined to roll Pakistan for 103 in their second innings. Having taken the lead, Zimbabwe were then aided and abetted by the weather, as fog ensured draws in the second and third Tests. It remains their most significant success.Fans run on to the field to celebrate Kapil Dev’s catch to dismiss Viv Richards•Associated PressIndia at World Cup 1983An upset that inspired a nation. India were basically tourists out in England and somehow they ended up playing the final. Against the two-time champions. Against Clive Lloyd. And Viv Richards. And Michael Holding. And Malcolm Marshall. Imagine sitting in the Indian change-room, doing opposition research. “Oh. Cool. That one guy has made 153 all by himself and he went unbeaten.” “And that other guy bowls so fast he’s called ‘Whispering Death’. Yay.” Fast-forward to the end of the match though, and it was Kapil Dev on the Lord’s balcony, lifting the World Cup aloft in front of a rapturous crowd. India only made 183. India made only 183 against that West Indies team full of superstars. But like all great underdogs, they wouldn’t accept they were beat. Just kept nagging away, looking for an opening. And then it came. Richards lofted Madan Lal to midwicket. Kapil pulled off a dreamy catch. West Indies slumped from 57 for 2 to 76 for 6 to 140 all out.Sarfraz Ahmed greets crowds outside his house in Karachi•AFPPakistan at the Champions Trophy 2017In mid-2015, Pakistan were in serious danger of missing out on qualification for the Champions Trophy. Having been overtaken in the ICC rankings by Bangladesh, it was between them and West Indies to secure eighth place before the cut-off and take the last spot at the 2017 tournament. They duly did so but arrived in England as rank outsiders, having continued to struggle for consistency and replaced Azhar Ali as captain with Sarfaraz Ahmed. In their opening game in the group stage, they were hammered by India; in the decider, against Sri Lanka at Cardiff, they needed all Sarfaraz’s qualities in a scrap (plus a few dropped catches) to make it into the semi-finals. Then, something clicked. The favourites, England, were sucker-punched and in their rematch with India, Fakhar Zaman set fire to the script. You could even forgive them the white blazers.Aravinda de Silva celebrates his hundred•Getty ImagesSri Lanka at World Cup 1996“He knew it in his bones,” Sidhath Wettimuny said of Arjuna Ranatunga when talking about that day in Lahore. The Sri Lanka captain had come into the tournament with a plan. Each player had a specific role to play. “I was there to make the new ball old,” Pramodya Wickramasinghe said. “He asked me to bat through the innings,” Asanka Gurusinha said. The eventual match-winner, the man who made 107 in the final against Australia, well his brief was to “get us a hundred, that’s all. You win us the World Cup.” And as Aravinda de Silva brought the dream closer to reality, the entire world reeled in shock. How did he? How did they? Did that just happen? In the background, Ranatunga was quietly collecting a stump, probably thinking “I love it when a plan comes together.”Jason Holder leads his players on a victory lap•Getty ImagesWest Indies beating England 2018-19If a team that has lost six series out of nine in a certain part of the world over the last 50 years loses a seventh, is it really that great an upset? Well, in this case, yes. England flew to the Caribbean ranked No. 2 in the world (although they were overtaken by South Africa before playing a game), fresh from a 3-0 whitewash away over Sri Lanka, and having beaten India 4-1 at home in the summer. West Indies, meanwhile, had not won a Test series against anyone other than Bangladesh or Zimbabwe since 2012. Then came 77 all out, Jason Holder’s double-century and a 381-run rinsing in Barbados; quickly followed by England crumbling again in Antigua, as West Indies secured the spoils with an emphatic 10-wicket win. If Holder hadn’t been suspended for the third Test, the scoreline might well have ended up 3-0.South Africa beating England 1905-06Just for kicks, one from not-so-recent memory, from the days when there were only three Test teams and they occasionally played on matting pitches. England arrived perhaps a little under-strength but still the fancied team. But they were faced with a new threat, a rarely seen beast: the googly. Back then, South Africa’s bowling attack was built on legspin and Reggie Schwartz made sure each of his mates knew how to bowl the wrong ‘un. Even so, the first Test in Johannesburg seemed like it was England’s. They bowled South Africa out for 91 in the first innings and had them 105 for 6 in the second, chasing 287. Only the formalities were left but clearly nobody told that to Gordon White or Dave Nourse. Those two contributed 81 and 93 respectively as chills went up and down the England players’ spine. There were a few sighs of relief when the ninth South African wicket fell on 239 but Nourse simply wouldn’t fall. And the last man in was the captain Percy Sherwell. It’d take a bit to dislodge him too. And eventually the two of them put on what was then the highest 10th-wicket stand in a successful chase – a record Sri Lanka bested last week in Durban. That one-wicket win was the catalyst for a nine-wicket thumping, a 243-run thrashing and finally an innings-and-16-run mauling of England.

What made Don Bradman better than the rest?

It wasn’t his physical skills that made him stand apart

Ian Chappell11-Oct-2020I was often asked an intriguing question during my playing days: “Why was Don Bradman so much better than any other batsman?”I didn’t have a satisfactory answer to the query. Nevertheless, I eradicated a couple of reasons for Bradman’s dominance. “It wasn’t his superior eyesight or reflexes,” I confidently said. Good reflexes and decent eyesight are required to successfully compete against top-quality international bowlers. There are enough players at that high level – not at Bradman’s Everest standard but efficient enough – to conclude that wasn’t the reason for Bradman’s record standing out like a lake in a desert. Then, out of the blue, I was presented with what I deemed to be a reasonable answer. I was watching a programme on the history of Australian cricket produced by Jack Egan and it featured never-before-seen footage of the 1938 Ashes Test at Trent Bridge. The match was famous for a brilliant Stan McCabe knock and a Bradman utterance.ALSO READ: Ian Chappell: Bradman v Sobers, Marshall v LindwallMcCabe scored a magical 232 off just 277 balls, including 170 while his last four partners added only 38. It was during this onslaught that Bradman implored his men to abandon the dressing room and sit on the balcony. “Come and look at this,” the captain said, “you will never see the like of this again.”Despite McCabe’s mastery, Australia were forced to follow on, and in Egan’s documentary, Bradman explained he didn’t want McCabe’s innings to be diminished by Australia losing the match. At that point Egan featured shots of Bradman’s match-saving second-innings century, accompanied by the animated comment: “Look at that footwork.””I am,” I said to no one in particular. It was Bradman like I’d never seen him before, apart from footage of the Bodyline series. Where he normally carved up attacks with the confidence of an international facing schoolboy bowlers, suddenly here was a mortal batsman, shuffling sideways in the crease and defending as though his life depended on survival.Don Bradman and Stan McCabe walk out to bat during Australia’s 1938 tour•Fox Photos/ Getty ImagesIt struck me that Bradman was batting with the pressure of the scoreboard and the weight of saving a match that he desperately didn’t want to lose. It was Bradman feeling all the pressures that other batsmen endure every time they walk to the crease. In that innings Bradman accumulated 144 not out off 379 balls for an uncharacteristically slow scoring rate of 37.99. He saved the match but also revealed that occasionally he was a mere mortal with a bat in hand. This innings showed that Bradman mostly – apart from his chastening Bodyline experience – was able to bat in a match with the serenity of a man involved in a casual net session. I’ve seen plenty of players flay net bowling when they weren’t concerned with fear of dismissal, losing the match, or being harassed by a demanding crowd. However, it was a different case out in the middle when they encountered all those outside pressures.ALSO READ: Jon Hotten: Why didn’t everyone copy Bradman? (2015)On most occasions his immense mental strength allowed him to cocoon himself from the outside pressures that bedevil other batsmen. It also helps explain why Jardine’s shrewd Bodyline tactics were successful in downgrading Bradman’s effect on that series. Not only did Jardine’s strategy provide Bradman with concern for his personal safety, they also succeeded in disrupting his mental serenity when batting. In addition to his immense mental strength, there’s no doubt Bradman also had a ruthless streak that drove him to crush opponents. It was this burning desire to outscore everyone else that probably caused a lot of old-timers to anoint the elegantly fluent Victor Trumper a better batsman than Bradman. Those comments annoyed Bradman and even caused him to present a pretty convincing statistical case to validate his superiority. Finally, I had what I deemed to be a satisfactory answer to the beguiling question: “Why was Bradman so much better than any other batsman?” It was his superior mental strength rather than any special physical attributes.

Weather and pitch in focus as India, Bangladesh ponder three spinners

Manjrekar: I will play Kuldeep Yadav in the second Test

Big picture: Another stern test awaits Bangladesh

Bangladesh came into this series riding on the high of winning 2-0 in Pakistan. It peaked when they had India 144 for 6 in the first innings in Chennai. But then India once again showed why they are arguably the strongest home side in Test history and went on to steamroll Bangladesh by 280 runs.It was a show of India’s depth in both batting and bowling. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli managed only 34 runs between them across four innings, but India had three centurions and two half-centurions. When it came to bowling, their seamers shared eight wickets in Bangladesh’s first innings and the spinners nine during the second.Things will not get easier for Bangladesh in Kanpur, where New Zealand’s tail had held on to secure a draw the last time a Test was played here. There is also some uncertainty about the pitch. The ground staff were preparing two surfaces and, as of noon on the eve of the match, it was not clear which one would be used.Related

  • Green Park's C stand deemed 'unsafe' for India-Bangladesh Test

  • Shakib 'eligible for selection' for Kanpur Test against India

  • Ravindra Jadeja, the quick and the deadly

Kanpur generally offers good Test-match pitches that help fast bowlers on the first morning before flattening out and assisting spinners on the last two days. However, the weather could be an issue this time, with rain forecast on the first three days. That could impact not just the pitch but also the toss decision and team compositions. But all is not bleak for Bangladesh. In their second innings in Chennai, their openers gave them a solid start, followed by Najmul Hossain Shanto’s return to form with 82. In their first innings, Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz all got starts. But to be competitive against this Indian team at home, you have to be at your best for much longer periods. Can Bangladesh do that?

Manjrekar: Bangladesh attack lacks quality and experience

In the spotlight: Shubman Gill and Shakib Al Hasan

Shubman Gill knows his ceiling. Even after scoring 452 runs with two hundreds in the home series against England earlier this year, he recently said he was yet to fulfil his expectations as a Test player. Gill got out for a duck in the first innings of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh but scored a stroke-filled unbeaten 119 in the second. Given India are to face tougher opponents in the coming months – New Zealand and Australia – Gill would be keen to fine-tune his game at No. 3.When is Shakib Al Hasan not in the spotlight? While batting in Chennai, he was seen biting a black strap, wrapped around his neck, to keep his head from falling over. When it was time to bowl, there were murmurs about his workload, ineffectiveness and discomfort with the spinning finger. And after Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe confirmed Shakib’s availability for the second Test, he dropped a bombshell about his future on the eve of the match.

Team news: Wait and watch?

There was no indication from the Indian camp whether they would play three spinners. Even if they do, it may not be a straightforward choice. If the pitch is too slow, Axar Patel could be handy with his pace and attacking the stumps. But India already have a similar spinner in Ravindra Jadeja. In Kuldeep Yadav’s favour, this is his home ground. So he is a tempting option, too. If India play one of Axar or Kuldeep, Akash Deep could be the one to miss out.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Shubman Gill, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 KL Rahul, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kuldeep Yadav/Axar Patel, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mohammed SirajIf Bangladesh go with three spinners, Taijul Islam could replace Nahid Rana. That could also help with Shakib’s workload, if required.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Shadman Islam, 2 Zakir Hasan, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto (capt), 4 Mominul Haque, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim, 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Litton Das (wk), 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Taijul Islam, 10 Hasan Mahmud, 11 Taskin AhmedGautam Gambhir and Abhishek Nayar inspect one of two pitches in consideration for the Kanpur Test•AFP/Getty Images

Pitch and conditions: Slow and low bounce?

The red-soil pitch in Chennai had decent bounce for both seamers and spinners in the first Test. Kanpur will be different. The two pitches being considered for the match are black-soil surfaces. They are likely to be flatter, with lower bounce, and are expected to become slower as the Test progresses. All that could change if it rains as forecasted, and bad light could become a factor too towards the end of each day.

Stats and trivia: Jadeja double on the cards

  • For the first time in their Test history, India have more wins (179) than losses (178).
  • Jadeja is one short of becoming the seventh Indian to take 300 Test wickets.
  • When Jadeja gets there, he will also complete the double of 3000 runs and 300 wickets. If he does it in Kanpur, in his 74th Test, he will be the second fastest to do so after Ian Botham (72).
  • Virat Kohli is 129 short of 9000 Test runs.
  • Taijul is five short of 200 Test wickets. Only Shakib (242) has more Test wickets for Bangladesh.

Quotes

“We don’t particularly pattern bad pitches. But we try to make sure the conditions are tough enough so that the players are challenged. A lot of these guys have played for so many years. Only if they’re challenged are they going to get better. So sometimes the thought process is just to challenge them differently so that your game and you, organically and mentally, grow.”

Crystal Palace intensify transfer talks to bring winger to Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace have enjoyed a fantastic campaign under Oliver Glasner and now look set to put some of their new-found appeal to use in the transfer market.

Crystal Palace set to build on wonderful campaign

After defying the odds to record a remarkable FA Cup triumph, Crystal Palace now have the feather in their cap of being Europa League participants next term, which is bound to attract prospective recruits.

Glasner has made quite an impact since walking through the doors of Selhurst Park and has re-affirmed his commitment to the Eagles despite his prowess in the dugout not going unnoticed.

He stated: “I have one more year left, and now we are speaking about next season. Everything that happens after July 1 2026 we don’t talk about this at the moment. It is too far away.

“We are talking about this year, and that is why I am 100 per cent committed. I have a contract and I have no other things on my mind.”

With his future at the club secure, Crystal Palace are expected to be active on the market and have identified Strasbourg forward Emanuel Emegha as an ambitious target to strengthen their forward line ahead of next season.

Unlikely to be the only arrival in South London, Mainz star Nadiem Amiri is also on the Eagles’ list as they look to the continent for fresh blood to help their European push.

Everyone connected with the club is experiencing an elevated level of excitement about the future. Arguably, Crystal Palace’s appeal has never been greater, and that can help to attract talent from global markets.

That said, Glasner is now reportedly intensifying advances to bring a talented gem to Selhurst Park that could be a star of years to come.

Crystal Palace intensify move for Faveurdi Bongeli

According to Africa Foot, Crystal Palace are stepping up talks to sign Tout-Puissant Mazembe winger Faveurdi Bongeli amid rival interest from Burnley in the 18-year-old.

Capable of playing on either flank, illustrating a degree of versatility, the youngster is also said to be on the radar of Borussia Monchengladbach, Dunkirk, Sint-Truiden and other clubs in England and Germany.

It is unclear whether he would go straight into the senior set-up or spend a period in Crystal Palace’s development squad before making the step-up, should a move occur.

Nevertheless, there is room for another wide player in Glasner’s squad to help complement the likes of Ismaila Sarr moving forward. Depth could be key to staking a claim in the Europa League, and Bongeli appears to be a star in the making with a number of clubs keen.

Now, it remains to be seen if Bongeli can achieve a dream move to England. Crystal Palace are likely to be in the hunt for several additions this summer, so there is plenty to get excited about for supporters.

Gyokeres alternative: Arsenal working to sign "monster" £60m Havertz upgrade

It’s been an unusual season for Arsenal this year.

It has felt as if Mikel Arteta’s side have simply gone from one disaster to another, and yet, as things stand, they look set for a second-place finish in the Premier League and almost made it to the final of the Champions League.

However, while challenging is nice, the North Londoners have now done that for three campaigns on the bounce, and fans are understandably demanding that they get across that finishing line next season.

Fortunately, the board seem intent on making the signings to help them do that this summer, with recent reports now linking the club to a prolific goalscorer who could be an ideal Viktor Gyokeres alternative and a massive Kai Havertz upgrade.

While Arsenal have been linked with a host of sensational strikers in recent weeks and months, perhaps the most significant have been to Sporting CP star Gyokeres.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Swedish international was touted for a move to North London last summer, and now, in recent weeks, it appears as if new Sporting Director Andrea Berta has really stepped up the club’s pursuit of the former Coventry City man.

In fact, reports from the last week or so have gone as far as claiming that the player has already agreed terms with the Gunners, while others have asserted that the North Londoners have submitted a bid in the region of £63m.

However, for all the goals Gyokeres has scored this season – 53 in all competitions – Arteta and Co might prefer to sign someone who could be even more of a sure thing, someone Premier League-proven, someone like Bryan Mbeumo.

Yes, according to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Arsenal have an ‘active interest’ in the Brentford star, whose raw output, versatility and underlying numbers have left the recruitment staff impressed.

Brentford's BryanMbeumocelebrates after the match

However, given the Cameroon international’s importance to the Bees and the interest from other sides like Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Newcastle United, he wouldn’t come cheap, with the West Londoners expected to demand around £60m for his services this summer.

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Mbeumo’s sensational ability, it’s worth pursuing, especially since he could be an ideal Havertz upgrade.

How Mbeumo compares to Havertz

So, the first to say is that while Mbeumo has primarily played off the right for Brentford, he’s no stranger to playing down the middle either, making 42 appearances as a second striker and 32 as a centre-forward.

Therefore, with that in mind and the fact that Bukayo Saka is near-enough undroppable when fit, it seems likely that Arsenal would sign the Bees ace primarily with the intention of starting him up top, in turn placing him up against Havertz for game time.

With that said, who comes out on top between the two attackers?

Well, when it comes to their raw output, which is, of course, what matters more than anything else for a striker, it’s the “unplayable” Cameroonian, by Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who comes out miles ahead.

For example, so far this season, he has scored 19 goals and provided nine assists in just 41 appearances, totalling 3487 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.46 games, or every 124.53 minutes.

In contrast, the Gunners’ number 29 has scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 35 appearances, totalling 2790 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.75 games, or every 139.5 minutes.

Unfortunately for the former Chelsea ace, the one-sided nature of this comparison only continues when we take a look under the hood at their underlying numbers.

For example, the “monster” forward, as dubbed by presenter Beth Tucker, comes out on top in the majority of relevant metrics, such as goals plus assists, progressive passes and carries shot and goal-creating actions, key passes, passes into the final third and penalty area, successful take-ons and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, while he might not be the biggest name around, Mbeumo has shown this season that he has what it takes to score bags and bags of goals in the Premier League, and therefore, Arsenal should sign him, even if it would be bad news for Havertz.

Aston Villa make offer to sign Serie A champion who’s now tempted by move

da betobet: After agreeing a deal to sign Zepiqueno Redmond on a free transfer, Aston Villa have now reportedly made an offer to sign a Serie A champion who is tempted to complete a move to the Midlands.

Aston Villa set to sign Redmond

da blaze casino: Kicking off their summer business as early as possible, the Villans are reportedly set to sign Redmond from Feyenoord when his current contract comes to an end at the end of the month. At just 18 years old, the Dutchman very much reflects the future of Aston Villa’s frontline and could provide Unai Emery with a replacement for Jhon Duran that he has needed at times.

When it comes to first-team experience, the young forward has already received a taste of Eredivisie action at Feyenoord and even featured in the Champions League last season. Now, Redmond will be keen to add some Premier League experience to a portfolio that only looks likely to grow more and more impressive as the years go on.

Despite their PSR concerns, Redmond could yet be the first of a few fresh faces in the Midlands if reports are anything to go by. Recent rumours have mentioned names such as Jack Grealish in recent weeks and there’s no doubt that his return would cause quite the stir.

Having been shown the door at Manchester City, Grealish could yet complete a sensational Villa comeback and one that would need to see him get fans back onside as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, away from Grealish, the Villans have also reportedly submitted an offer to sign a Serie A champion this summer.

Aston Villa submit offer to sign Rrahmani

According to Il Mattino, as relayed by CalcioNapoli, Aston Villa have now submitted an offer to sign Amir Rrahmani from Napoli this summer and whilst he is not desperate to leave the Italian club, he is reportedly tempted by the offer from the Midlands.

Villa aren’t alone in their pursuit, however, with Tottenham Hotspur also reportedly chasing a deal to sign the experienced centre-back. And that interest should come as no surprise. The 31-year-old enjoyed an excellent campaign as part of Napoli’s Serie A-winning side, starting in all 38 games, and has done more than enough to attract impressive admirers.

Given how highly those in the Midlands rate Pau Torres, the fact that Rrahmani outperformed the Spaniard in several areas proves just how impressive an addition he would be.

A deal may be easier said than done, however, especially if Antonio Conte has his say. The Napoli boss was full of praise for his defender last season, describing him as “hardworking” and like a “solider” in his title-winning side.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana will return to the UAE on Sunday to play in her team’s must-win T20 World Cup match against New Zealand on Monday.Sana left the team on Thursday after news of the passing of her father and was not available for Friday’s match against Australia, which Pakistan lost by nine wickets.Pakistan remain in contention for the knockouts but need to beat New Zealand by a substantial margin on Monday, and hope other results go their way. If India beat Australia out Sunday, Pakistan will not be able to reach the semis.Sana was missed on Friday, where Pakistan were also without senior seamer Diana Baig, who on Saturday was replaced in the squad by Najiha Alvi after failing to recover from a right calf muscle injury she suffered during their first match of the tournament, against Sri Lanka on October 3.Diana Baig walked off injured after bowling one ball•ICC/Getty Images

Najiha, a 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has played 12 ODIs and eight T20Is, scoring 14 runs across her four innings in the shortest format. She last played at international level during Pakistan’s tour of England in May, scoring 26 not out and 6 in her two ODI innings there. Prior to that, she played in both home white-ball series against West Indies.Against Australia, Pakistan’s batting, in particular, misfired as only Aliya Riaz scored more than 20, and they were bowled out for the lowest total so far in the tournament, 82.Though Sana, who was named captain of the side in August, has been batting as low as No.7 in the two matches she has played so far, she was up at No.5 in the lead-up, and holds Pakistan’s highest individual score at this event: 30. She has also opened the bowling and is Pakistan’s second-highest wicket-taker with four strikes from two matches and has their lowest economy rate of 4.82.Related

Opening batter Muneeba Ali led in Sana’s absence and faced questions over the batting collapse, which she responded to gamely. “We accept as a batting group that this is the third match and we have not adapted to the conditions really well. We will have to step up the batting for the next match,” she said at the post-match press conference. “As a batting group, we will have to sit and think how we can increase our scoring areas and what approach we should take in the next match.”Earlier in the tournament, Sana was questioned over why she is not batting higher and maintained it was a “team decision.” When Muneeba was asked whether the coach had been making decisions unilaterally, she rejected that assumption and explained that the team remained a work in progress.”The management and coach discuss and we all mutually decide. We need help too. We’re young,” Muneeba said. “If we talk about Fatima, she is also young in her internationals. I have also led for the first time. We need help and management is for this purpose. But collectively, decisions are planned before the match and things are decided mutually.”
