Thunder 250 for 8 (Smale 76, Morris 54) beat South East Stars 130 (Chathli 54, Cross 6-40) by 120 runsEngland’s Kate Cross took List A best figures of 6 for 40 as Thunder beat South East Stars by 120 runs in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy at Beckenham.Batting first, Thunder made 250 for 8 from their 50 overs, Seren Smale top-scoring with 76 and Fi Morris making 54. Ryana MacDonald-Gay was the Stars’ most potent bowler with three for 42 and she also claimed a run out, while Kalea Moore took 2 for 49.Cross, however, did the damage by claiming the key wickets of Bryony Smith and Alice Davidson-Richards in successive balls. Despite a batting 54 from Kira Chathli Stars never really looked like chasing down the target and they were all out for 130 from 36.4 overs.Thunder won the toss and chose to bat on a slow Beckenham track, putting on 53 for the opening wicket before Moore bowled Alice Clark for 23 in the 15th over.MacDonald-Gay bowled Emma Lamb for 24 in the next over, but Smale and Morris shifted the momentum with a 96-run stand that was only broken when the latter chipped a Moore full toss to Paige Scholfield at cover.MacDonald-Gay nearly had Smale for 43 in the next over but Chathli couldn’t hang on to an inside edge and she was joined by Ellie Threlkeld, who made 33 before she was cleaned up by MacDonald-Gay. At that point the Thunder were on 205 for 4 with seven overs left but they lost wickets too frequently to mount a serious charge during the death overs.MacDonald-Gay bowled Naomi Dattani for 14 and then ran out Danielle Collins for 1 as she chased a non-existent single, before Smale was smartly run out by Phoebe Franklin going for a second. It was impossible to say who were favourites at halfway but Scholfield was unable to bat in her usual slot due to an injury and the odds tilted further in the visitors’ favour when Cross intervened.Stars skipper Smith went for just 12, caught at extra cover by Clark and Cross’s next delivery bowled Davidson-Richards off the inside edge for a golden duck. Chathli survived the hat-trick ball at the start of the next over and was then dropped off the sixth ball by Dattani when she was on 2.Makeshift opener Chloe Hill made a useful 18 in a partnership of 45 for the third wicket until Sophie Morris had her caught by Clark. Moore was bowled by Dattani for 6 and when Aylish Cranstone was lbw to Fi Morris for 9 Stars’ hopes looked thin. They looked thinner still when the same bowler had Franklin caught for 2 at cover by Cross and wafer-thin when Cross returned at the City End to get Chathli caught at long-on by Fi Morris. In her next over Cross had MacDonald-Gay caught in the deep by Fi Morris for 13 and although Scholfield came in at No. 10, she was batting in visible discomfort and lasted just two balls before chipping Cross to Dattani for 1. An emphatic win was concluded when Cross bowled Dani Gregory for a duck.

Matthew Cross: 'We've got four games, and we've got to win four games'

Scotland vice-captain a fan of tweaked format that gives smaller sides a better chance

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jun-2024Scotland vice-captain Matthew Cross has welcomed the change to the T20 World Cup format and said that his side go into the tournament looking to win all four group games, ahead of their opener against defending champions England in Barbados on Tuesday. In the last two editions of the T20 World Cup, Scotland have had to start off in a preliminary group stage with the aim of qualifying for the Super 12s, where the more established nations entered the competition. They won all three of their first-round games in 2021, including victory over Bangladesh, to progress but failed to make it through in 2022, despite beating West Indies for the first time in a full international. This time, having won six from six at last summer’s ICC Europe Region Qualifier to confirm their place in the Caribbean, they will take on England, Australia, Namibia and Oman for a spot in the last eight, with wicketkeeper Cross targeting “a good opportunity” for Scotland to once again upset the odds.”The opportunity is greater because we get to play two of the top teams, any which group you end up in,” he said. “So, that’s not always guaranteed. And I think the cut-throat Associate world means that it’s a scrap to get through from the qualifier. You know, we had it hard with getting so close two years ago. But I think it works both ways. I think it’s nice to have four games, three games feels really quick and you’re on the flight home potentially before you even know it. So, I do quite like the new format and I think there’s a good opportunity for a team that plays well enough to progress.Related

“Look we’ve got four games and we’ve got to win four games, I think there’s nothing too complicated about it. They’re all teams – well, I was going to say they’re all teams we’ve beaten – we’ve not beaten Australia, but we’ve beaten three of the four teams so three out of four wins is going to be good enough to take us through. But we’ve got to take each day as it comes and we’ve got to earn the right to win these games.”Scotland have never previously played England in a T20I but have good memories from their last meeting, a raucous six-run ODI win in 2018. The surface at Kensington Oval, the same as the one which was used for Sunday’s low-scoring game between Oman and Namibia, could also turn out to be a leveller.Asked how Scotland planned to beat England, Cross said: “Score more runs than them. I think with T20 cricket, you know everyone’s got to be there, they’ve got to be at it but it kind of takes one or two individuals to have their best day and I think that’s sort of the message we send – expect to have your best day and I think if you have your best day, we’re going to be pretty close to winning a game and that seems to be the way T20 cricket goes. It becomes an individual having a really good day or a collective team effort.”Despite a rich history of sporting rivalry between England and Scotland, this will be only their sixth encounter – and first at a World Cup – with Cross joking that a good performance might lead to an outing at Lord’s.”It’s a really exciting opportunity for us as an Associate nation to get to play England,” he said. “Although we’re very close to England we don’t seem to play them very often but we’ve got great memories from the last time we played them, so to get to play them at a World Cup is pretty special.”I’m waiting for the invitation to Lord’s to go and play them, so hopefully on the back of this maybe we’ll get one but, look, it’s an awesome opportunity for our guys and really a chance for us to go out and show what we’re all about.”Cross also echoed the view of England captain, Jos Buttler, that it would be important to adapt to the surface on the day, saying that Scotland had not changed their preparations after seeing the opening fixture in Group B, a floodlit game which produced scores of 109 all out and 109 for 6 before Namibia took the points in a Super Over.”I think it’s going to be who adapts quickest. It’ll be a day-game tomorrow so the pitch will play differently, I’m sure. It’ll just be about who can adapt the quickest and find the best way to score runs. It might be a bit more attritional cricket in terms of it looked a bit lower and a bit slower, but I think we’ve been preparing for that. A lot of the Caribbean wickets have been quite similar, so I think we’re ready to go.”

Smart Stats: Lungi Ngidi's super spell for CSK, and Chris Gayle's 175 not out

We look at the most impactful match performances in IPL history

ESPNcricinfo stats team16-Sep-2020There have been 58 centuries scored in the 12 seasons of the IPL – ranging from Chris Gayle’s 175 not out to Virat Kohli’s 100 – and 20 five-wicket hauls. However, all runs scored and wickets taken in cricket are not the same: a five-wicket haul might include the wickets of three tailenders, taken when the match was already in the bag. So how does one pick out the performances that were the most impactful?Enter Smart Stats, a set of metrics developed by ESPNcricinfo, which takes into account the context of each batting and bowling performance in calculating the impact.ESPNcricinfo LtdBased on these impact values, let us look at the top batting and bowling displays in IPL history, and the most impactful match performances in all 12 editions of the tournament.Top bowling performances
The most impactful bowling performance in IPL history was Lungi Ngidi’s 4 for 10 for the Chennai Super Kings against the Kings XI Punjab in the 2018 season, which had a total bowling impact of 185.85. In a match where the average run rate was 7.97, Ngidi conceded only 2.5 runs per over. He bowled three overs in the Powerplay, dismissing Chris Gayle for a duck and KL Rahul for 7, and then returned in the 18th over to take a couple of lower-order wickets, which did not greatly affect his smart wickets value of 4.74, because he dismissed two top-class batsmen early in their innings. His Smart Economy rate was in the negative: -2.68, which is reflective of the number of runs he saved for his team.ESPNcricinfo LtdA couple of performances from the knockout games feature in the top five, though they came in defeats: Dhawal Kulkarni’s 4 for 11 for the Gujarat Lions in the 2016 qualifiers against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Anil Kumble’s 4 for 16 versus Deccan Chargers in the 2009 final. The top five performances are all four-wicket hauls.ALSO READ: Smart Stats: Why David Warner topped Virat Kohli in IPL 2016Top batting performances
The top two individual scores in the IPL are also the top batting performances, in terms of batting impacts. They are also the only innings with impact scores of over 300: Gayle’s unbeaten 175 in 2013 had a score of 373.33, and Brendon McCullum’s 158 not out in the first ever IPL match in 2008 scored 343.02.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe next best is David Warner’s 126 off 59 against a high-quality Kolkata Knight Riders attack in 2017. He was clearly superior to the other batsmen in the match. While Warner scored his runs at a strike rate of 213.55, the other batsmen across both teams managed a strike rate of just 127.62.In fourth and fifth positions are two hundreds by explosive batsmen but scored under different circumstances. AB de Villiers’ 129 not out against the Lions in 2016 came off just 52 balls, at a strike rate of 248.07; at the other end, Kohli scored 109 off 55. The two added 229 for the second wicket, which remains the highest partnership in IPL history. Virender Sehwag’s 119 off 56 against the Deccan Chargers in 2011, on the other hand, came in a chase of 176 in an innings where the next highest score was 17.ALSO READ: Andre Russell, the IPL’s most destructive, impactful and valuable playerTop match performances
The top two slots here go to the two best batting performances in IPL history: the unbeaten hundreds by Gayle and McCullum were so special that no all-round or bowling performance has matched it. In third place is Chris Morris’ all-round performance of 2 for 35 in four overs and 82 not out off 32 balls for the Daredevils against the Lions in 2016. He dismissed McCullum and Suresh Raina, and then, coming in at 57 for 4 in the 11th over in a chase of 173, Morris nearly took the Daredevils home, partnering with JP Duminy to add 87 off 21 balls.ESPNcricinfo LtdGayle the batsman takes top spot, but Gayle the allrounder comes in at No. 4. Against the Kings XI in 2011, Gayle smashed 107 off 49 to lift the Royal Challengers to 205, and then, not satisfied with the carnage he had inflicted with bat, also chipped in figures of 3 for 21 in four overs. It remains the only instance of a player scoring a century and taking three or more wickets in an IPL match. Another all-round performance comes in at No. 5: Yuvraj Singh’s 83 off 38 and 4 for 35 against the Rajasthan Royals in 2014. There have only been five instances of a player making a 50-plus score and taking three or more wickets in IPL history; Yuvraj features twice.

Best innings of 10 or fewer balls
These are the innings which define the specialists in this format: a handful of deliveries at the crease is enough for these batsmen to change the complexion of the game completely. Only one such innings has a batting impact score of more than 100: Morris’ incredible 38 off 9 for Daredevils against Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2017 season. Morris struck four fours and three sixes off those nine balls. In second place is Rashid Khan’s 10-ball 34 in the second qualifier in 2018, a knock which helped Sunrisers add 40 runs in the last 13 balls of their innings. Those runs proved to be vital, as they eventually won by just 16 runs.

Man Utd slash Alejandro Garnacho asking price! Red Devils ready to accept £40m for Argentina winger amid interest from Chelsea, Aston Villa and Spurs

Manchester United are reportedly ready to accept around £40 million ($54m) for Alejandro Garnacho, with the Argentina international among several players pushed out by manager Ruben Amorim. The winger was previously valued as high as £70 million ($94.4m), but growing interest from Premier League rivals may now lead to a cut-price exit for the 21-year-old.

Manchester United have slashed their asking price for Garnacho to around £40 million, per The Telegraph. The winger is one of several players left out of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States. Earlier reports have stated that Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur are all monitoring his situation, as the Argentina winger would prefer to stay in the Premier League.

Amorim is reshaping Manchester United’s squad and has sidelined Garnacho along with Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Marcus Rashford, who is set to join Barcelona on a loan deal. The Red Devils are reportedly prepared to take financial losses to back their Portuguese coach's long-term plan, and Garnacho’s sale could be one of several departures this summer as part of a major overhaul.

Garnacho drew strong interest from Chelsea and Napoli in January, when he was priced closer to £70 million. His departure seems certain now that Amorim has stated unequivocally that the Argentine is not part of his plans and that his asking price has been cut. Despite overseas interest, Garnacho is expected to prioritise offers from English clubs as he wants to stay in the Premier League.

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR GARNACHO?

United are set to begin their United States tour without Garnacho, and talks could accelerate in the coming weeks. Interested clubs may try to negotiate further down from the £40 million figure. With time ticking, Garnacho’s exit now appears more a question of when than if.

This is excellent news for Maresca, as a place in next season’s Champions League draw is widely reported to have a big impact on the club’s summer transfer plans.

Chelsea will also be busy behind-the-scenes, as there will be a special edition transfer window open from June 1st to June 10th – which allows the Blues and Man City to sign players before the Club World Cup begins.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea want a centre-back, winger and forward as three top priorities. Depending on player sales and their European status, Maresca’s side could also go after another central defender, a left-back, goalkeeper and versatile attacking player.

There are also suggestions that Chelsea are still looking at signing another midfielder. While Roméo Lavia has performed excellently when available, the Belgian’s injury woes have left Maresca short in that area far too consistently.

Chelsea expressed a serious interest in Man United starlet Kobbie Mainoo back in January, holding talks with his agents, but the England international ultimately remained at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old’s importance to Ruben Amorim could place him too far out of Chelsea’s reach, with Maresca’s side believed to be keen on Napoli star Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa as a potential alternative.

The 60-cap Cameroon international is a key starter for Antonio Conte’s title-chasing Napoli side, bagging six goals and five assists in all competitions. Anguissa could also add some much-needed experience to the squad, with Chelsea already making moves for him.

Chelsea hold extensive talks over signing Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa

According to Italian newspaper Il Mattino, via Sport Witness, Chelsea have held more than one round of negotiations over signing Anguissa ahead of the summer.

The 29-year-old is also keen to make a Premier League return, in an act of personal redemption, as he believes that he’s got far more to offer in Europe’s most prestigious division.

Napoli's Frank Anguissa in action with Genoa's MortenFrendrup

The former Fulham midfielder also has a real admirer in Mourinho, according to reports in Turkey, which claim the tactician is personally keen to sign him for Fenerbahçe (Fanatik).

Anguissa’s contract includes a £38 million release clause as well, but it is unclear just how much Chelsea would be willing to pay for a player whose fast approaching 30.

In any case, there is little denying the African’s quality, and his form this season is turning heads at Cobham. Previously called a “machine” by ex-teammate Joachim Andersen, Anguissa would undoubtedly provide Maresca’s midfield with real steel.

Shaheen and Babar seal Pakistan's nervy win against Ireland

Pakistan were in trouble in their chase of 107 but Babar Azam remained unbeaten to take them home

Danyal Rasool16-Jun-20241:23

Mumtaz: ‘Phenomenal display of left-arm swing bowling’ from Shaheen

Pakistan made it more complicated than it needed to be, but Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi led them to a nervy three-wicket win to sign off their T20 World Cup campaign. Shaheen led the way with the ball with three early wickets and finished the contest off with two sixes, while Babar shepherded a chase that he watched fall apart with an unbeaten 32.Mohammad Amir and Haris Rauf joined Shaheen among the wickets as Ireland were reduced to 32 for 6. At that stage, an early-afternoon finish appeared likely, but Gareth Delany and Mark Adair gritted their way through a 44-run partnership off 30 balls. Imad Wasim took care of the lower order with figures of 3 for 8 in four overs, in what is likely his last game for Pakistan, but a cameo of 22 from Josh Little took Ireland to 106.Pakistan were cruising through the chase after eight overs with Saim Ayub, Mohammad Rizwan and Babar doing their bit to take any sting out of Ireland’s bowling attack. But a frenetic phase in the middle overs, when Curtis Campher and Barry McCarthy took four wickets for 10 runs, left Babar alone with a relatively long tail. But Abbas Afridi swung his way through a happy-go-lucky 17 to bring the target down to 12, while a calf injury for Little meant Ireland had to bowl spin at Shaheen. He finished with two heaved sixes to seal a win that gave Pakistan relief rather than satisfaction.Shaheen back in love with first oversAfter going eight successive T20Is without a first-over wicket – his longest dry spell in his T20I career – Shaheen finally snapped the streak today, his third ball a perfect illustration of why he has historically been so effective up front. The new ball swung and seamed back in to pierce Andrew Balbirnie’s defences and crash into the stumps. Two balls later, Shaheen got one to shape the other way, kissing Lorcan Tucker’s outside edge on the way to Rizwan. There was nearly a third when Pakistan reviewed one that clipped Harry Tector’s pad, and though that wasn’t given, Shaheen trapped Tector in front in his next over.Pakistan fans with a message for their team in Lauderhill•ICC/Getty ImagesIreland’s recoveryWhen Pakistan had Ireland at 32 for 6, any prospect of recovery was distant. But Ireland understood that continuing to attack was the most direct route to runs. In the tenth over, Gareth Delany hit Shadab’s first ball for six and Mark Adair pulled the last one for four. They attacked Abbas Afridi, who had not played a competitive game since his inclusion in Pakistan’s World Cup squad, for 16 runs in the 11th.It kept Ireland on track three figures, and when another slump came – from 76 for 6 to 80 for 9 – Little and Ben White batted the remaining six overs, adding an unbeaten 26 for the last wicket. An hour later, they were almost rewarded for it.Pakistan’s jittersPakistan securing a straightforward win would have been an inauthentic end to the campaign they have had, and duly, the collapse came. If Pakistan felt they were sitting pretty halfway through the chase against India, it was nothing compared to the impregnability of their position against Ireland. Pakistan needed 55 in 12 overs with eight wickets in hand, with Babar and Fakhar Zaman batting, when Zaman drilled one to mid-off. It was the catalyst for flutters through the whole of the Pakistan camp as Usman Khan was deceived by McCarthy’s extra bounce in the tenth over. The memories of the chase that fell apart last Sunday were fresh as Shadab, to whom cricket is offering no hiding place at the moment, flicked his second ball to the wicketkeeper. Imad finally connected with the cut shot he’s been trying since Ravindra Jadeja bowled against him, but straight to the man at point. An unassertive top order and a non-existent middle order won’t get you out of the first round at many World Cups, and this game was the perfect illustration of the point.

Odegaard will love him: Berta in talks to sign £75m "monster" for Arsenal

da lvbet: And just like that, Arsenal’s season has come to an underwhelming end.

da stake casino: Mikel Arteta’s side might have made it to their first Champions League semi-final since the 08/09 campaign, but on the domestic front, it’s been a disappointing year.

An astounding 14 draws in the Premier League ensured they finished a distant second to Liverpool, and were it not for a brilliant strike from Martin Odegaard late on yesterday afternoon, it would’ve been 15 draws.

With that said, it’s not been a good season for the Gunners’ captain either, although based on the star recently liked with the club, 25/26 could be a whole lot better.

Arsenal transfer news

With the rumour mill now in full swing, Arsenal have been linked with a host of incredibly talented footballers in recent weeks, such as Rafael Leao and Ademola Lookman.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former could cost an eye-watering £145m this summer, but as he’s racked up a brilliant haul of 12 goals and 13 assists in 50 appearances for a lacklustre AC Milan side this season, he may just be worth it.

Lookman, on the other hand, could cost a far more reasonable fee of around £55m, and as he’s managed to find the back of the net 20 times in 40 games and provided seven assists for good measure, he may be too good of a deal to pass up on.

Ademola Lookman for Atalanta

However, to really help Odegaard get back to his incredible best, Arteta and Co need to improve the club’s striker options, which is where Benjamin Sesko comes in.

According to a recent report from Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal remain incredibly interested in the RB Leipzig striker ahead of the summer window.

In fact, Plettenberg has revealed that the Gunners’ new Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, has been in “direct contact” with his opposite number at the German club and that the club “have to sell Sesko in order to generate income.”

The report does not mention a potential price, but according to stories from earlier this month, the Slovenian’s release clause may now stand at about £75m due to his impressive performances this season.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskobefore taking a penalty

It would be a costly transfer to get over the line, but given Sesko’s ability today and future potential, it is one well worth fighting for, especially as he’d be a dream for Odegaard.

Why Sesko would be perfect for Odegaard

Despite finishing second in the league, not a single Arsenal player hit double figures for goals in the competition, so it’s abundantly clear that a more prolific centre-forward could be the difference between a fourth runners-up medal and finally getting over the line next season.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskoheads at goal

This is where Sesko could come in, make a massive difference to the team’s fortunes, and, specifically, help Odegaard get back to his very best.

For example, in 45 appearances, totalling 3258 minutes, this season, the Slovenian “monster,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, scored 21 goals and provided six assists.

That converts to an average of a goal involvement every 1.66 games or every 120.66 minutes.

In contrast, Kai Havertz scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 36 appearances, totalling 2809 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.8 games, or every 140.45 minutes.

Moreover, according to Understat, the Leipzig star’s 13 Bundesliga goals have come from an expected goals figure of just 10.84 this season, whereas the German’s nine league goals have come from an expected goals figure of 11.83.

So, just imagine how many more assists the Gunners’ Norwegian maestro would be able to rack up with a far more clinical striker in front of him.

Furthermore, as he’s still just 21 years old, there is no telling how much more effective the Radeče-born poacher could be in three or four years.

Ultimately, Arsenal need to sign a new striker this summer, and while he won’t come cheap, Sesko looks like someone who could lead the line for years to come and help get Odegaard back to his mercurial best.

Farhan Ahmed ends Sri Lanka resistance as England U19s seal innings win

England completed a comprehensive win on the final day of the second Youth Men’s Test at Cheltenham, beating Sri Lanka by an innings and 53 runs.Resuming their second innings on 246 for 7 and facing an impossible task in terms of saving the game, the tourists required a further 78 runs just to make their opponents bat again. Needing to take a further three wickets to wrap up victory in the match and the series, the Young Lions needed only 10.5 overs to finish the job at the College Ground.Eschewing the new ball, captain Hamza Shaikh instead trusted in his spinners, Farhan Ahmed and Charlie Barnard finishing the job without recourse to pace. Nottinghamshire off spinner Ahmed proved especially effective, claiming impressive figures of 4 for 59 from 26.5 overs with seven maidens as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 271.Having summoned stiff resistance the previous evening to carry the contest into a fourth day, Vihas Thewmika fell for a 38-ball 18 in the fourth over of the morning, offering a straightforward return catch to Lancashire slow left armer Barnard, who finished with figures of 2 for 55 from 21 overs.Manuja Chanthuka came and went quickly, falling lbw to Ahmed for one as the home side closed in on an inside-the-distance victory. Ahmed then finished things off, pinning last man Sheshan Marasinghe on the front foot in his next over.Determined to prove a point after having been held to a frustrating draw in a rain-affected contest in the first Test at Wormsley, the Young Lions dominated every aspect of this game to stamp their authority and complete a thoroughly-deserved one-nil series win at one of English cricket’s most iconic festivals.
