Indian cricket’s rags to riches broadcast rights story

Star India has strengthened its hold on television and digital rights in cricket by retaining worldwide rights to Indian cricket for INR 6138 crore (USD 944 million) for the period 2018-23. They now hold the two most valuable broadcast rights in cricket, having bought the IPL rights for INR 16,347.5 crore (US$ 2.55 billion) in September 2017 for the period 2018-22.In addition to its Indian presence, Star also has a strong grip internationally, having paid USD 1.9 billion for the broadcast rights for ICC tournaments between 2015-23.Star’s bid was declared the winning bid once its close rival, Sony Pictures Network India, listed INR 6118.59 cr as its final bid in the first ever e-auction in sport, which spanned three days. Star’s bid was an increase of 59% from the previous cycle of Indian cricket rights, which were sold for INR 3851 crore (USD 750 million at the time) for the period 2012-18, also to Star. The average cost per match for the Indian cricket rights sold on Thursday was about INR 60 cr (USD 9.2 million approx), which is higher than the average cost per IPL game for the 2018-22 period – INR 54.5 cr (USD 8.4 million approx).ESPNcricinfo LtdStar India gets to telecast 102 men’s international matches over the next five-year period, compared to 96 in the previous six-year cycle from 2012 to 2018. The 102 matches will be split across the home seasons as follows: 18 in 2018-19, 26 in 2019-20, 14 in 2020-21, 23 in 2021-22 and 21 in 2022-23. As per the BCCI, Star listed the following figures as the per match value for each of the five seasons: INR 46 cr, 47 cr, 46.5 cr, 77.4 cr and 78.9 cr respectively. The rights will also include men’s domestic matches as well as the India women’s international matches. There were three categories of rights up for bidding: the Indian television rights and rest of the world digital rights (GTVRD), digital rights for the Indian subcontinent alone (ID), and the global consolidated rights (GCR) for which the winning bid was eventually made. The e-auction, an unprecedented exercise in sport, became a three-horse race after the BCCI pruned the original list of six bidders on Tuesday morning, having conducted feasibility checks on eligibility of the bidders. Star, Sony, and Reliance were the final competitors when the e-auction began at 2pm on Tuesday. On Thursday, bidders had 30 minutes to contest a bid, unlike on Tuesday and Wednesday when they had an hour. There was a 35.81 % difference between the final bids on the first two days: from INR 4442 crores (USD 680 million approx.) on Tuesday evening to INR 6032.50 crore (USD 925 million approx)  by Wednesday evening. On Thursday, the bids rose in smaller increments: INR 6061.05 cr, INR 6085.30 cr, INR 6111.70 cr, INR 6111.70 cr, and finally INR 6138 cr.

Last-gasp win makes success sweeter for New Zealand

New Zealand kept their unbeaten ODI run alive, inflicting a rare defeat on England, in a contest which tested their resilience with bat and ball

New Zealand are a victory away from equalling their best streak in ODIs of 10 wins on the bounce, and number nine of the current sequence was their most satisfying yet as they overcame a formidable England team in a contest that twisted and turned through 100 overs.West Indies barely offered a fight in the first ODI series of New Zealand’s season and though Pakistan occasionally challenged them, it only really came after the series had been decided. At Seddon Park on Sunday, New Zealand grabbed the early initiative inflicting England’s first defeat in a live bilateral ODI since the India series last January. The sight of Ross Taylor scoring a masterful hundred should come as no surprise – it was his 18th in ODIs, although among his better ones – but around him New Zealand found fresh matchwinners. Tom Latham, who had endured a barren run of ODI form at home since his century against Bangladesh in late 2016, counterpunched when England were on top and most thrillingly Mitchell Santner sealed victory with a late dart. To win without contributions from Martin Guptill or Kane Williamson was a big tick for the home side.”The partnership between Ross and Tom certainly set it up and was deserved of a good finish,” the coach, Mike Hesson, said. “We lost our way a little but the way Santner and even Tim [Southee] came out and were composed at the end was good for us”Under pressure, a lot of times [the middle order] have had to come in and play cameos, be quite selfless. Sunday was quite different, they had to play a substantial innings and the way Tom and Ross set the side up was exceptional”That’s why we play six frontline batsmen, you can’t always rely on your top order to set the platform even though they’ve done it for the majority of the summer. It was nice for the middle order to dominate.”For Latham it was just his second fifty-plus score in 32 ODI innings at home – and nine of his previous 13 knocks in New Zealand had been single-figures – while Santner’s batting has faded, or at least stalled, as his spin bowling had improved.”Tom’s been in good touch the last week or so,” Hesson said. “He got in really good positions yesterday which shows that he’s put the work. We know he’s a quality player. He’s taken the keeping on as well so we’ve asked quite a lot of him. He made a great start in India [last October], struggled a little bit at home and he’s been reminded of that a few times but we know he’s a good player. The more experience he gets in the role the better he’ll get.”Mitch has been doing that in the nets for us for a long time, we know what a good striker he is. He played nicely against these guys at Trent Bridge a while ago and showed his power, so it’s always nice for someone to get us over the line. He’s put a heck of a lot of work into his batting in recent times and nice to see it come off.”The chance of victory was restored by the Taylor-Latham alliance of 178 and capped off by Santner, but in a game of so many subplots New Zealand’s performance with the ball should not be forgotten. Tim Southee and Trent Boult excelled at both ends of the innings – the first 10 overs brought 41 runs, the last 67 – while someone snagged a breakthrough each time England threatened to get away. Hesson, who was a touch more critical of the bowling performance in the middle 30 overs, singled out Colin Munro’s knuckle ball to deceive Joe Root as a key moment.”The ability to keep taking wickets throughout the innings was critical, even though they can bat to 11 you’ve still got to start,” Hesson said. “If we can keep bringing out new guys, you earn yourselves some dots, a reprieve really. The key to any one-day game is to make sure you can still have an attacking option at one end.”We kept chipping away, we didn’t really go bang, bang but we just chipped away when they started to get away from us. I think the wicket of Joe Root was critical for us, to get them five down meant we got five overs of them trying to rebuild a little.”

In his article with The Telegraph, Carragher said: "After seeing the news he is leaving at the end of the season, my heart sank. I genuinely thought it was some kind of hoax, or cruel joke.

"The immediate reference point was the resignation of Kenny Dalglish in 1991, when Liverpool were top of the league and preparing for an FA Cup replay with Everton. I was an Everton fan then, delighted Kenny was going."

Eriksen out for six weeks with knee problemDanish midfielder back in Man Utd squadTen Hag's team plagued by injuries this seasonWHAT HAPPENED?

The Denmark international has been out with a knee injury for the past six weeks but has since been training with his team-mates. It now looks like he is ready to return ahead of the Premier League match against West Ham on Saturday, following Ten Hag's announcement.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT TEN HAG SAID

"The one we are pleased to have is the return of Christian Eriksen in the squad. We also have doubts; we had some illness in the week, so we will have to see how they recover tomorrow," Ten Hag said at a press conference. "But one thing is sure, we will put a good line-up on the pitch and we have to win the game."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Eriksen had featured regularly for Ten Hag this season, making 11 Premier League appearances before he sustained his latest injury. Six of those games were from the start, with the other five coming as substitute appearances. The return of the 31-year-old will be a relief for Ten Hag amid constant injury concerns for his team this season. They are still without the likes of Casemiro, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia and Amad Diallo, while Diogo Dalot will be absent due to suspension.

Eriksen will likely play a part when United visit West Ham in London on Saturday, even if it is from the bench. The Red Devils have not won in their last three matches and head into the weekend's game in seventh place in the Premier League – one point above their weekend opponents.

Leeds Can Copy Adams Success With "Extraordinary" £11m-rated Gem

Leeds United could be set to repeat a recent transfer success of theirs, should they choose to once again sign from the Bundesliga.

Is Alexander Nubel leaving Bayern Munich?

With Daniel Farke's summer revamp having been kicked off by the signing of Ethan Amapdu, it now finally feels like the 49ers will start to exert their influence on their new club and help forge a brighter future for this struggling giant.

Dropping into the Championship last season was a gut punch to their reputation, having only spent three years back in the Premier League. However, it already seems like the new owners are planning for an instant return, with a fresh report coming from Sky Sports Germany to reaffirm the Whites' interest in Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel.

Whilst VfB Stuttgart seem in the lead for his signature, the report does not discount the pull of the Yorkshire team, who remain in the race despite having yet to make an offer.

The German shot-stopper is valued at €13m (£11m) by FootballTransfers.

How good is Alexander Nubel?

Having spent the last two seasons on loan at AS Monaco, as playtime at his parent club was limited given the legendary status of Manuel Neuer, the 26-year-old has proven himself more than capable of starring as a first-choice option.

After all, his 6.93 average rating last term in Ligue 1 is indicative of this, with his 71% save success rate feeding into the mammoth 3.7 stops he averages per game, via Sofascore. A tally of 24 clean sheets across his 97 appearances for the French club is an admirable one.

However, his talents reach far beyond his ability to keep the ball out of his net, as Germany's U21 coach Klaus Thomforde claimed: "You can only speak highly of Alex – he's an incredibly talented goalkeeper, with the world at his feet. He's got an extraordinary footballing ability, but he's also very down to earth and is a great lad."

In once again returning to the Bundesliga for a signing, similar to how they did by prying Tyler Adams from RB Leipzig, the Elland Road outfit could be set to repeat old successes that would all but assure their promotion next season.

tyler-adams

After all, the USMNT international proved to be an instant hit in the engine room despite relegation, having provided a much-needed injection of pace, dynamism and defensive steel.

This was outlined through his statistics, as he posted 1.5 interceptions, 3.7 tackles, one clearance and one key pass per game, whilst maintaining an 82% pass accuracy too, via Sofascore.

His ability to break up and dictate the play was impressive, as his 6.98 average rating in the Premier League made him the club's best performer of those who had started five or more games.

Sky Sports journalist Tim Thornton sought to support this, noting back in September:

"He's done really, really well. He knows his game. When he came in, he said ‘I'm not going to be the man to replace Kalvin Phillips, I’m my own man.’ There are similarities in the way he plays with Phillips in the way that he breaks play up and screens the defence. But he's also very different in a lot of ways. So he's done brilliantly."

Given the immediate success the 24-year-old garnered, translating his form from Germany to England in a flash, perhaps Nubel could seek to emulate this switch and help alleviate an area of huge weakness for Leeds.

Southampton Could Hold Onto 24-Year-Old Talent Amid Premier League Interest

Southampton could soon be able to breathe a sigh of relief in regards to the future of Nathan Tella, with reliable journalist Darren Witcoop reporting that Burnley are now looking at former Saint Nathan Redmond instead.

How many goals did Nathan Tella score for Burnley?

The 24-year-old spent the 2022/23 season out on loan with the Clarets in the Championship, helping them to storm to the league title under the stewardship of new manager Vincent Kompany. Having never managed more than 18 league games in a season before his move to Turf Moor, he went on to feature in 39 games for the side in the second tier and was a key member of their first-team. He bagged 17 goals, with five assists along the way, and ended the campaign with a rate of 0.79 goal contributions per 90 – the best rate of his career.

Prior to this spell with Burnley, he had spent the entirety of his career playing for Southampton and their reserve side. He was handed his league debut for the Saints back in 2019/20 and has so far managed 33 games in the Premier League with them. However, his goal and assist rate at St Mary's Stadium hasn't been as exceptional as what he managed with Burnley, as he has just one goal and two assists over those fixtures with the club.

Are Southampton selling Nathan Tella to Burnley?

Having finally realised his potential and shown his ability in that Clarets team, Kompany has been keen to reunite with Tella again for the 2023/24 campaign. He has already expressed his interest in adding the winger on a permanent basis, but as of yet there has been no deal done to send him back to the club.

And it now appears as though Burnley could be moving on from the Southampton man. According to a report from reliable journalist Darren Witcoop, the Saints have whacked a large price tag on the head of the 24-year-old after his displays for Burnley.

It means that the Clarets are currently being "priced out" of a transfer move for the forward this summer. With no end in sight in terms of sorting out the financials, it appears as though they could now be looking elsewhere to boost their wings as the journalist also adds that they have turned towards Redmond. He also formerly played for Southampton, but has most recently spent time with Besiktas and is now a free agent.

It's no surprise that Burnley have been desperate to try and bring Tella back to Turf Moor, with their current boss Vincent Kompany viewing the winger very highly. During his tenure with the Clarets, the manager stated that the forward was a "raw diamond" and was able to help the side "in so many ways" because he "has all the tools".

Tella really did shine at Championship level then, so if Southampton can hold on to the 24-year-old, it could do their chances of an instant promotion the world of good next season.

Chandimal ruled out of Galle Test

The 27-year old has been diagnosed with pneumonia; Rangana Herath likely to lead

Dinesh Chandimal, the newly-appointed Sri Lanka Test captain, will miss at least the first Test against India after contracting pneumonia. Rangana Herath, who captained Sri Lanka in four Tests in the 2016-17 season, will lead the side in Galle, in Chandimal’s stead.”We were actually only told late last night – the blood Test came a bit late. He’s got pneumonia,” Asanka Gurusinha, Sri Lanka’s cricket manager, said of Chandimal on Friday. “He was admitted to hospital this morning at 9am, and he’s definitely out of the first Test.”The doctors have advised us this morning to say: ‘Finish the first Test’ and they’ll advise us afterwards. If they tell us he needs another week to recover, that’s it. We can’t do anything. He had started feeling unwell on Tuesday after the Zimbabwe Test, but we never suspected it would be anything like pneumonia.” Chandimal has, however, been cleared of dengue, which has been rife in Sri Lanka over the past few months. His absence is a significant blow to the team, not just because Chandimal is captain, but also as he is part of a relatively settled top order. In addition, Chandimal will have had fond memories of the most recent India Test in Galle, where his rapid 162 not out helped overturn a first-innings deficit of 193.Although limited-overs captain Upul Tharanga is in the side, Herath’s experience has landed him stand-in captaincy. Herath most recently led the Test side in the 1-1 draw against Bangladesh, in March.”Most probably the captain is going to be Rangana, because for now it’s just one Test, and he has done the job before,” Gurusinha said. The news is slightly better for Sri Lanka elsewhere on the injury front. Asela Gunaratne, who had experienced tightness in the hamstring during the Zimbabwe Test, is likely to be available for the match. “He’s good – we got the green light from the physio this morning, but we’ll still have to put him through his paces over the next few days,” Gurusinha said. “Asela is a very resilient guy. Very tough.”Fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep, who had also missed the Zimbabwe Test also with a hamstring injury, has recovered sufficiently to be named in the squad Gurusinha confirmed. The full squad is expected to be announced late on Friday.

Jose Mourinho reveals real reason Mohamed Salah & Kevin De Bruyne left Chelsea – with Liverpool & Man City superstars acting like ‘kids who couldn’t wait’

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Plenty of questions have been asked down the years of why the Blues allowed two players that have gone on to become Premier League greats at Liverpool and Manchester City respectively to slip the net at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho worked with both, but saw Salah leave for Roma and De Bruyne to Wolfsburg during his time in west London.

WHAT MOURINHO SAID ABOUT SALAH & DE BRUYNE

Mourinho has told the of why Egypt and Belgium internationals were offloaded before full potential had been unlocked: “To be honest, they left because they wanted to leave. They left because they didn't want to wait. History proves that their option was good because they've had the careers they have and reached a high standard, but sometimes kids make decisions like that because they can't wait, or they don't have the patience to be calm and to wait for the right moment. Sometimes their career goes in the wrong direction.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Salah made just 19 appearances for Chelsea before heading to Italy, while De Bruyne took in nine outings.

Mourinho added: “With Kevin, it was very similar. We went to pre-season in Asia. We went to Indonesia, Thailand, and Kevin was due to go on loan to a German side. I told the club ‘no, I don't want him out on loan, I want him with me’. He stayed with me, and he began the Premier League season playing in the starting XI. After that, we played the European Super Cup in Prague against Bayern and he didn't play that game. Then, the next day, he wants to leave. We played the second Premier League game of the season against Manchester United at Old Trafford and we drew 0-0. He was on the bench and he played some minutes, but it wasn't enough for him, so he wanted to leave. When you are at Chelsea and you want to leave, go and another one comes. They were just kids who couldn't wait, and their careers say they were right, but it wasn't down to me. Probably other guys will say I pushed them out, but not them.”

Herath takes six as Bangladesh crumble to 259-run defeat

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details5:48

Fernando: Herath a fourth-innings force of nature

Sri Lanka’s slow bowlers imposed their familiar chokehold over another fourth innings of a home Test match, uprooting batsmen as early as the second ball of the day, before sending the Test hurtling to its conclusion by the middle of the afternoon session.Leading the final charge was Rangana Herath. He was unstoppable as ever in defence of a score, and picked up record for most career wickets for a left-arm spinner en route to figures of 6 for 59. This was his 29th five-wicket haul overall, and his 10th in the fourth innings – no one in the history of the game has got more than seven.Batting in the fourth innings in Galle is among the most daunting of Test cricket’s challenges, and although Bangladesh suggested they might approach the task with spunk on the fourth afternoon, fell away quickly on Saturday. This was their third day-five collapse in four matches, having also failed to draw matches in Wellington and Hyderabad. Save for a 19-over stand between Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das, there was little in the way of resistance. They were eventually all out for 197 – 259 runs short of Sri Lanka.Their woes had begun immediately on day five. Soumya Sarkar, who had sped to fifty the previous afternoon, almost sent a catch to short leg off Asela Gunaratne first ball, but was out next ball in any case, Gunaratne’s offbreak jiving away from his defence to shave the top of off stump. The top order then quickly succumbed. Dilruwan Perera came to the crease to bowl to Mominul Haque, and trapped the batsman with much the same delivery that had got him out in the first innings. Flighted in to pitch on around middle stump, Perera turned the ball, beat the shot, and rapped a leaden-footed Mominul dead in front of middle stump. So scrambled was the batsman’s mind, that he even ventured a heedless review of that lbw decision though he never really thought he had a chance of surviving it – walking most of the way to the boundary before the third-umpire could even run the simulations.Tamim Iqbal soon sent a catch to slip off Perera, before Herath made his presence known with a double-strike that drew him level with Daniel Vettori’s career wicket tally of 362. Shakib Al Hasan was caught at leg slip off one that turned a little more than the batsman expected, then two balls later, Mahmudullah was lbw to a delivery that spun past his defence as well. At that stage, Bangladesh had lost five wickets in 12.4 overs.Mushfiqur and Liton mounted a brief fight through the back end of the first session, lending hope that Bangladesh might be able to survive until the afternoon rains came. But by now Galle’s pitch – itself often a force of nature – had become unfriendly, and even the bad balls turned far enough to draw mistakes. Lakshan Sandakan turned a ball way down the legside in the over after lunch, and Mushfiqur got himself out chasing it and offering a thin edge to the keeper. Sandakan had dismissed Shakib in similar style in the first innings.Herath then soon had Liton caught off the leading edge at cover to take his 363rd Test wicket – which made him the game’s most successful left-arm spinner – and the tail exposed now, the result seemed inevitable. Taskin Ahmed, Mehedi Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman all fell to Herath. All up, Bangladesh could only last 45.2 of the 98 overs they were due to bat on the day.

Keep walking, Leo! Messi needs rest if he is to pull off another miracle during Inter Miami's gruelling MLS run-in

The Argentine ace has been criticized in some quarters for doing very little running during games but it's wholly understandable…

It's become quite clear that, at some point, Inter Miami are going to have to win without Lionel Messi. They basically did it in their most recent match, a 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls that saw Messi come off the bench to seal the win with a dazzling late goal.

But, even so, that was still a cameo, and a Messi cameo is still a massive advantage in MLS. It's also a luxury Miami won't have in the very near future as they prepare for some time without their superstar signing.

But how can Miami win without him and, as the season reaches its most important moments, why does Messi have to miss games in the first place?

The answer to the first question will come over the next month or two, while the answer to the last one has been made clear over the last week or so. With Miami pushing for a miracle run towards their playoffs, head coach Tata Martino is already making preparations for life without Messi.

(C)Getty ImagesIn need of a rest

There's a reason that Messi started on the bench against the Red Bulls: he was in need of a rest.

Since arriving in Miami, Messi played in eight games in just over a month leading up to that MLS debut. Those games came in five different cities, with Miami fortunate enough to host a few along the way through their Leagues Cup run.

It's a lot to ask a 36-year-old player that arrived fresh off a vacation. Messi has given his heart and soul to Miami since arriving, and has looked as happy as ever to do so, but the fact is that he isn't at the age where he can play two or three games a week for months at a time anymore.

“Leo and many other players are reaching an important physical limit," Martino said last week, "and from today we will start to evaluate this – how do I face at least the next three games? You also have to take into account the large number of games that we played in 45, 50 days.”

Because of that, Martino gave him 30 minutes off the bench against the Red Bulls. He entered with Miami up a goal and, by the end, they were up two thanks to Messi's brilliance.

Advertisement(C)GettyImagesThe master of walking

There has been some questioning, though, over Messi's need to rest. Why does a player that has become so famous for walking and not covering great distances require rest?

Especially in recent years, Messi's walking has become infamous. Statistically, he walked more than any other player at the 2022 World Cup, leaving his Argentina teammates to do the dirty work while he provided the magic.

Messi's walking, though, isn't out of laziness; it's by design. He's like a snake that's coiled up and waiting for the moment to strike. The second the defense loses track of him for one second, he's sprinting on by them for a game-changing goal.

Still, there are those that say Messi's playing style should make him less reliant on rest, with former U.S. men's national team star Alexi Lalas among those pointing out that Messi's legs probably won't be as tired as some of his teammates'.

“Load management? Messi walks around most of the game," Lalas tweeted. "Don't be so insecure. Messi has always walked…until it's time not to walk.”

Getty ImagesThe international break

It won't just be MLS games that will be tiring Messi out. No, the Argentine has international duty coming in the very near future.

Messi will join Argentina for the upcoming international break, which runs from September 4-12. That will rule him out of a match against Sporting KC on the ninth. There's another break in October, too, and Inter Miami do have a match the day after Argentina's World Cup qualifier against Peru on the 17th.

You have to account for travel, strain and tiredness when it comes to those international breaks and, as a result, Martino thinks Messi can miss up to three of Miami's 11 remaining MLS matches this season.

"It's something we have to get accustomed to," said Martino. "He's going to miss at least three games – he's going to get called up by his national team – and we need to keep winning."

Getty ImagesNot the only one

Messi isn't the only Inter Miami star that could miss time for international soccer. No, the club could be totally decimated by call ups over the next two months.

DeAndre Yedlin, Josef Martinez, Drake Callendar, Kamal Miller, Diego Gomez, Leo Campana, Robert Taylor, Serhiy Kryvtsov, David Ruiz, Edson Azcona and Benjamin Cremachi could all be involved in international matches over the coming two windows. It's not a guarantee that all will leave, and some likely won't, but it's a lot of players to potentially lose for any period of time as Miami chase a postseason spot.

The good news is that the club reinforced this summer, and Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are obviously equipped to lead in Messi's absence. Players like Facundo Farias could certainly use the opportunity, while the club has done a good job of building up some of the homegrown stars mentioned above, not all of whom will be called in for international matches.

The good news? Martino dropped some news about next season, saying MLS plans to do away with the long-criticized scheduling that has seen teams play through the international breaks.

"I understand that they are analyzing that for next year," Martino said. "It is probable that that will happen."

Still, it'll be tricky to navigate in the here and now, especially given Miami's situation in MLS.
