Davinia Perrin 79* steers Central Sparks in comfortable chase

Sunrisers struggle to post testing target despite Alice Macleod fifty

ECB Reporters Network19-May-2024Central Sparks launched their Charlotte Edwards Cup campaign with an emphatic victory as they defeated Sunrisers by seven wickets at New Road, Worcester. In a season-opener between the teams that finished in the bottom two slots last season, Sparks started in style this time round thanks principally to a dazzling unbeaten 79 from just 48 balls by Davina Perrin.Sunrisers batted first and were lifted to 138 for 6 by Alice MacLeod’s 39-ball 54 against an attack led by Hannah Baker and Emily Arlott. It looked a slightly under par total and so it proved as Perrin, who hit two sixes and 13 fours, and Australian overseas player Courtney Webb made short work of the chase with an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 83 in 47 balls. Mady Villiers took 2 for 36 but Sparks cruised to 142 for three with 36 balls remaining.Put in on a glorious day at New Road, Sunrisers were given a bright start by Joanne Gardner who dominated an opening stand of 40 in 35 balls with Grace Scrivens but then both fell in three balls. Scrivens hesitated over a very tight single and was beaten by Perrin’s throw and Gardner was bamboozled by the flight of Baker’s first delivery and bowled. When Arlott bowled Villiers through a slog and Baker also bowled Cordelia Griffith, Sunrisers had slumped from 40 without loss to 50 for 4 in 19 balls.MacLeod and Jodi Grewcock batted with composure to add 50 in six overs and the former ensured her side had something to bowl at before missing an attempted sweep at Arlott and falling lbw to the penultimate ball of the innings.Sunrisers, who lost all seven games in the Charlotte Edwards Cup last year, needed to strike early with the ball and they did. They removed both openers in the first 13 balls as Ami Campbell hammered Eva Gray to point and Abi Freeborn was lbw through a failed sweep at Villiers. When Sparks skipper Eve Jones chipped Villiers to mid-off, it was 59 for 3 and the visitors still had a chink of hope but Perrin’s cleanly-hit onslaught, with measured and positive support from Webb, soon extinguished it and Sparks eased to victory.

Washout in Florida takes USA through to Super Eight

The result also secured USA’s place in the next T20 World Cup in 2026

O’Brien: USA deserve to be in the Super Eight

Match abandoned USA have qualified for the Super Eight stage in their maiden T20 World Cup appearance, after their final group game against Ireland was washed out in Florida. The no-result gave USA five points, which was enough for a second-place finish behind India in Group A.There was heavy rain in Florida all week and the outfield in Lauderhill was extremely wet on Friday morning. There wasn’t enough time to get the outfield ready for play before the rain returned to end any chances of the match beginning.USA had begun their campaign with a victory against Canada in Dallas, and then they upset Pakistan in a Super Over to become strong contenders to qualify for the Super Eight. Though they were then beaten by India, USA came to Florida needing only one point from the match against Ireland to qualify. The result also ensured that USA would be among the automatic qualifiers for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.Friday’s washout eliminated Pakistan, Canada and Ireland from Group A, and all three teams are scheduled to play in Florida over the weekend, weather permitting. Canada play India on Saturday, while Ireland take on Pakistan on Sunday. Ireland are the only team in Group A without a win yet, having lost to India and Canada before the abandonment against USA.

India-NZ semi-final switched from fresh pitch to used surface

There is no ICC requirement that World Cup knockout matches must be played on unused pitches

Rohit: I believe toss is not a factor at Wankhede

The first semi-final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, between India and New Zealand in Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon, will be played on a used pitch that has already staged two matches in the tournament.ESPNcricinfo understands the semi-final was initially supposed to be played on Pitch 7, the central strip of the Wankhede Stadium’s pitch block. Pitch 7 is a fresh surface that was not used in the league stage of the World Cup.But a decision was made to shift the game to Pitch 6, which is slightly off-centre and has already hosted two matches in the tournament: South Africa’s 229-run win over England on October 21, and India’s 302-run victory over Sri Lanka on November 2.The change represents a late deviation from the pitch allocation devised before the World Cup. A source told ESPNcricinfo: “6-8-6-8-7 was the planned rotation at Wankhede. 6-8-6-8 is what has been used so far.”After the semi-final had begun, the ICC released a statement saying the change was not unusual. “Changes to planned pitch rotations are common towards the end of an event of this length, and has already happened a couple of times. This change was made on the recommendation of the venue curator in conjunction with our host. The ICC independent pitch consultant was apprised of the change and has no reason to believe the pitch won’t play well.”According to the ICC’s Playing Conditions for the World Cup, the relevant ‘ground authority’ is “responsible for the selection and preparation of the pitch” before any given match – in this case, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). The ICC also have an independent pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson, who works alongside local groundstaff. The Daily Mail reported that Atkinson has become frustrated by changes to pre-agreed plans throughout the World Cup, and that he speculated in a leaked email whether the pitch for the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday “will be the first ever ICC CWC final to have a pitch which has been specifically chosen and prepared to their stipulation at the request of the team management and/or the hierarchy of the home nation board.”Should India make the final in Ahmedabad, they would face either Australia or South Africa. Pat Cummins put his faith in the ICC to oversee the pitch process.”Yeah, I saw that [the report]…obviously ICC have an independent pitch curator who manages that so I’m sure they are all over making sure it’s fair for both teams,” he said. “So far this tournament [on pitches] that we’ve played on I’ve not seen any issue.”There is no ICC requirement which states that knockout fixtures must be played on fresh pitches. The only stipulation in their Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process reads: “It is expected that venues that are allocated the responsibility of hosting a match will present the best possible pitch and outfield conditions for that match.”The semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup, in England four years ago, were both played on fresh pitches at Old Trafford and Edgbaston. But last year, both T20 World Cup semi-finals were played on used pitches: one at Adelaide Oval, the other at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Both India and New Zealand players inspected the pitch at the Wankhede from close quarters on Tuesday evening before it was covered by groundstaff early during India’s training session under floodlights.

Wilder may have inadvertently signed Sheffield United's next Oliver Burke

Whilst Chris Wilder should be rightly praised for the large array of stars he’s worked with at Sheffield United such as Billy Sharp, John Egan and Jack O’Connell, the much-celebrated Blades boss has also fallen victim to signing some real duds whilst occupying the Bramall Lane hot-seat.

Indeed, notable pick-ups such as Rhian Brewster haven’t exactly gone to plan under his wing, with the one-time £23.5m buy only bagging seven strikes from 107 games in South Yorkshire.

At least Brewster has shown spurts of his quality, however, with two of those goals coming this season.

But, with this other disastrous signing, he never managed to raise his head high concerning his underwhelming displays.

Oliver Burke: Wilder's worst signing at Sheffield United?

Coincidentally, the cursed purchase of Oliver Burke also happened around the same time Brewster arrived through the door from Liverpool, with the Blades going on to taste relegation down to the Championship off the back of their poor recruitment.

Burke joined Wilder’s ranks for £5.8m in September of 2020, with the Scotsman once a £15m purchase by ex-club West Bromwich Albion when the Baggies picked up Burke fresh off his promising exploits at boyhood club Nottingham Forest.

Oliver Burke

But, that £15m on the end of the West Midlands side would end up being a rash splurge of cash, with Burke only managing to pick up one goal from 24 appearances at the Hawthorns, a worrying trend that would continue on at his next club.

To further pile on the misery, the now 27-year-old’s blunt time at Bramall Lane would culminate in a relegation appearing on his career CV, with the goal-shy attacker picking up just two strikes and one assist from 36 forgettable clashes.

In the end, Burke would leave his ill-fitting surroundings on a free transfer, with the £5.8m move simply going down as a big misfire.

The promotion chasers will just be keeping everything crossed that history isn’t repeating itself at the moment.

Wilder's next Burke at Sheffield United

Wilder would have been aware this January that splashing the cash recklessly could work against his side, with seven new additions entering the building to help with United’s promotion efforts.

Whilst Tom Cannon was fresh off an 11-goal loan stint with Stoke City, coughing up £10m for the hot ticket attacker to join his ever-growing camp might well have raised some eyebrows, considering four of those strikes came in just one game.

But, with his blistering record at youth level also seeing him post 51 goals for former employers Everton, the risk of spending £10m on the Irishman was deemed one worth pursuing.

This is where the similarities to Burke’s unfortunate tale do begin to pop up, considering the now Werder Bremen forward was another face that had so much hype attached to his name when lighting up youth pitches, with the tag of being the ‘Scottish Gareth Bale’ even coming his way.

Looking at the table above, it’s been far from a smooth start to life in South Yorkshire for Cannon, with the lethal centre-forward play typical of his Potters stint now nowhere to be seen.

The 22-year-old has unfortunately drawn regular blanks instead, with Wilder using him sparingly across his promotion-chasing side’s last three league encounters, opting instead to utilise free transfer Tyrese Campbell as his lone marksman.

Labelled as “outstanding” in the past by ex-Hull City boss Liam Rosenior, Cannon is far from being written off yet in his new surroundings.

But, if he continues to be wasteful up top for the Blades after costing such a significant amount of cash to bring in, he could be hurtling down the same rocky road as Burke.

Outshone by Sterling: Arteta must axe Arsenal star who dropped a 3/10

Mikel Arteta opted to play what was effectively a b side for Arsenal’s Champions League second-leg game against PSV Eindhoven and got the sort of result and performance you’d expect from such a decision.

The Gunners were already 7-1 up on aggregate going into the match and all but through the quarter-finals, so it would be hard to describe the display as all that surprising.

The 2-2 scoreline was probably just about a fair enough reflection of the encounter, as both sides had chances to claim victory.

Moreover, while some squad players made a good account of themselves, like Raheem Sterling, others probably played themselves out of the lineup for Sunday.

Sterling's performance vs PSV

It’s no secret that this season has been something of a disaster for Sterling, and so going into last night, it was potentially the last chance he’d had to show Arteta that he still has something about him, and while the circumstances made it a bit of a nothing match, that’s what he did.

For what felt like the first time in months, if not the entire campaign, the Chelsea loanee looked full of life, and even though it didn’t pay off every time, he was trying to make things happen whenever he got the ball.

The Kingston-born star provided the assists for both goals and could have scored two of his own thanks to a well-timed run in the first half that left him one-on-one with the keeper and then a determined drive late in the second half that saw his close-range effort saved by the keeper once again.

The 30-year-old left an impression on GOAL’s Sean Walsh, who awarded him an 8/10 at full-time, writing that he worked ‘extremely hard’ for his two assists.

On top of the praise from the press, the experienced dynamo’s statistics also make for great reading, as in 94 minutes of action he amassed a combined expected goal and assists figure of 0.80, provided two assists, took two shots on target, played three key passes, created one big chance, took 47 touches and made one interception.

Overall, while Sterling almost certainly won’t feature in the lineup at the weekend, that won’t be because of his display last night, which might not be the case for one of his teammates.

The Arsenal starter who's played themselves out the team

Unfortunately, while the game wasn’t all that bad, and the result was ultimately meaningless, a few starters likely played themselves out of contention to start on the weekend.

One of those players was Jorginho, who had an uncharacteristically poor night in the middle of the park for the hosts.

The Italian ace was entirely ineffective in attack and utterly hopeless when it came to the more important defensive side of his game, switching off and losing his runner for Ivan Perišić’s goal and then losing the ball entirely for Couhaib Driouech’s impressive lob.

Unsurprisingly, Sean Walsh was equally unimpressed with the former Chelsea man, awarding him just a 3/10 on the night, a rating more than validated by his statistics.

In 94 minutes of football, the 33-year-old amassed an expected assists figure of just 0.04, completed just 86% of his passes, made no key passes, failed to take a single shot, failed 100% of his dribbles, lost 100% of his ground duels, lost the ball 11 times, committed one foul and made one mistake that led directly to a goal.

Ultimately, while Sterling put in arguably his best performance in an Arsenal shirt last night, Jorginho put in one of his worst in some time, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t start a game again for a while.
